Did I get $20.00 worth of cutting tools ? I not sure what all the different shapes cut but I'm going to find out. I wish I had found the holders for for the indexable ones.

Wow, topop101. You could open the Plane and Bit Brace museum, and still have enough left over for years of ebay sales. I doubt there are enough plane collectors in the world to want all those.

Are there any "scarce" planes in that pile? Stanley #1s are popular, but not scarce.
Any high end levels, etc.?

I'm not sure about scarce, but there are router planes, 45's , 42's some 1/2 and 1/4 sizes like 604-1/4. I just didn't have time to check every plane. Levels I didn't check out close either. There were drawers with what I would consider nice or high end . the boxwood & brass rules and scribes. Maybe 20-30 items there. There were so many block planes and I have done well with but I didn't see any that were old or rare. My break down so far is about 1400 for everything but the planes. The brace and bits, rules and scribes are half of that. The wood planes and block planes I'm figuring 2.00. The metal bodied ones I'll have to break down a bit more. In the photos there divided by maker. Stanley, Miller falls, Craftsman and such.
I have 2 months to bid so I have time for research.

Topop101:

I like the info/advise that Crguy passed along.

It would be nice to win the bid, but the next step would be how to handle it and make your money back in a reasonable period of time.

Thanks for posting the pics, as it's items you don't get to see that often, in the condition that they have been kept.

Mike

No doubt it will be a lot of work and some will end up in my own collections. Time wise... if done in a year I'd consider that good. I would have to contact all the collectors I know and have them spread the word. running something like this through ebay would be insane..

Most collectors won't be interested in the common stuff - they already have all they want. The only people that buy common stuff are new collectors just starting out, and there don't seem to be a lot of them.

Ebay prices for common planes are way down.

I was going to ask about Bedrocks as they are salable to users also. However, there is no 604 1/4.

The best levels of course, are the inclinometers, rosewood, and fancy cast iron like Davis.

A trip to the flea market was supposed to be followed by a sale at a mechanics' that was losing his shop. The guy flaked out and never showed up to his own sale. He posted the listing on CL last night but must have been too hung over to be bothered getting up this morning. He deleted the listing 90min after the sale was supposed to start. There were three of us waiting at opening time but we all gave up after standing there for 30min. After talking to two other guys that share the building, the landlord is kicking him out for not paying rent. Apparently he doesn't bother to show up during the week, no wonder he can't pay the rent. It may not have been worth it anyway. The guy only works on beater Suburu's (the front of the building was cluttered with the carcasses) and the rest of the shop is filled with trash, according to the other occupants.

Anyway, here's what I picked up at the FM for $4 -

SnapOn OEX-200 5/8" short combo wrench (owner's engravings)
unknown 1/2" Hex drive male-male universal
2 - 90* oil cap fittings
unknown detail carving chisel

Picked up this box full of goodies. Total cost for everything was $25. No idea on the brand of the box, can't find any markings but they may be buried under the 10 layers of battleship Grey paint.

I'll post more later after I sort through it and see what's actually in there.

(I really like the looks of that old blackhawk stuff)

Just picked up just this little game board. Thought the cover looked cool. Has all the pieces it seems except for the marbles but I can toss a couple in there. 50 cents.

I think you'd do well on those tools.Lot of nice stuff there.Especially if you are not in a hurry, that is a lot of stuff to sort, itemize, price, ship etc.

My only concern would be would you be able to make an amount of money equal to a decent wage per hour. I know we all don't like to think that way but sometimes it has to be a factor.

If I get a chance to get back at the collection I check those levels out better and recheck the plane numbers. I know I saw 600 series and some were using 1/4 and 1/2 in there numbers. I looked at some many I'm sure I'm confusing the numbers....

I would say you have lefts, rights and straights, along with some carbide inserts but no carbide insert holder. If you bought all that new, it would be a little more but $20 is high used retail imho. Certainly didn't get screwed if you can use them.

GP, not sure, but I believe the unknown grips are for crimping alligator style flat belt lacing. I have a commercial lacer that I use, and the pin is inserted into the bend area of the lacing to prevent completely collapsing it, and to provide a pathway for the retaining pin upon assembly.

Here was my find for yesterday. Went to the grocery store and a young man was posting signs. I followed him home and bought this 1200 watt generator for $5. Fired it up with 2 pulls, and it was full of gas.

I'm thinking about getting a pair of 3 AA "cartridges" (you can't get D's in Lith) and loading it with Lithium's and getting a small LED replacement (Docrcy 30 Lumens?) and using it as an emergency flash in the Samurai.

Outlaw,
Good find on that flashlight. I can never pass them up if the deal is right. But I never seem to use them because the newer LED lights are so much better. So your idea to convert this one is pretty cool. If you have success please post the results. I know I'd be interested.

This thread would be sooo much easier to read if people would post thumbnails instead of those huge pictures.

It would also take up way less forum space ;-)

I disagree. I like the large photos. I can just scroll down the page and see everything easily. Having to click on every thumbnail to enlarge it is kind of annoying.

As do I, on my phone I have to open thumbnails in a new tab as they don't work properly, which is not much fun. Its annoying when people forgot to put each photo link on a separate line so you end up with the pics way off the right hand side of the screen.

The tapatalk app for phones is whats causing the monster pics. It uploads some at a reasonable size, but others come out just plain huge. I cant figure it out.

^^^I agree 100%.

Thumbnails are a PIA to view.

Embedding images are so much better and you just need to limit their size to something like 1280 X 800 so you don't have to scroll.

Thanks! I would have never guessed that.

Wow....I was feeling pretty good about my haul until I saw some of the great find that you all got this weekend.

Saturday I spent all day at the auction, got about 6 lots of tools. Lots of junk, but I was able to pick out some good stuff.

f5eafbc236fdc330dd0c6e87d4ac9fc1.jpg

Also ended up with about a gallon junk sockets and 2 dozen junk screwdrivers. Also got a bucket of rusty tools that are ugly but will be usable with a little work.

Edit: I bought this tool box as well

Hit a couple estate sales this weekend, here's what I picked up: 15" Proto adjustable, Companion USA tin snips, Craftsman 1/4" drive handle, Lufkin combination square, and a spool of 300 ohm twinlead for ham radio antenna projects, $15 total. Also earlier this week I picked up this Huot middle chest filled with mostly junk, but with a good number of usable punches, chisels, and files, $40 on Craigslist. Shown with the '79 Snap On roller cabinet (partially repainted) that I picked up a couple weeks ago for $10 on Craigslist, and the' 75 Snap On road chest (multiple repaints) I found last summer at a yard sale for $5. Planning on stripping them all down, doing some hammer and dolly work, and painting them all to match. Not sure if I want to go with the standard red or do something off the wall like extreme green and hammered silver.

I guess this counts as well.
Allis Chalmers Weightmate Forklift. Needs some tinkering.
Traded 2 snowblowers and $200 for it. Came with a new propane tank plus tons of new installed parts.
Should make moving stuff around easier.:bounce:

Ok the forklift gets a "you ****!" There's been a ton of times that I wished I had one to load/unload stuff off the truck or trailer. Once I get a real shop and not just a 2 car garage, I'll be looking for some type of lift truck.
