Outlaw, no such luck on the hatchet being anything super special. 4" long blade, Plumb branded. Nice head with minimal edge damage. Will need a new handle, but the price was right.

Wow, it looks so small proportional to other things in the pic.

That style head is my favorite, partly due to style, and partly due to the inlaide steel edge they have. I have two 4 inchers on 24 or 28" handles for camp use.

Picked up a nice little lot at a sale in the neighborhood last weekend for $19. My favorite is the Proto Los Angeles key chain.

Ok man, take deep breath. We'll get you through this.
Here's just a little taste to stroke your......... Um ......... Tool Fetish?

Made it to a Friday sale early this morning. The nephew didn't have school today and my cousin is watching him. Sadly, not much there to bother with. A small old Sear's compressor (don't need another) and the few handtools were junk or worn out. I missed out on a 36" paper roll holder while I was contemplating a vise (vice? :lol_hitti). No wiggle room on the first day. It was the only thing I walked out with.

$25
Craftsman #5176 3-1/2" jaw.

 yeah it was on track to blow past last years post tally, now it may not make a page a day average? 50 days left in the year, 365-319=46...

Its always the slow period in Nov/Dec...

Speaking of "end of the year" we need to start nominating the next vict,,, I mean the next Host for next year!

based on post count, and leaving Jake and I out of it, the top 5 posters in the thread are:

Outlawmws 605
thecody59 371
jakemac 335
topop101 304
mike_paxton 247
BlueBomber 232
3baygarage 181

I'll Nominate Top as we haven't had a host from across the pond yet...

OUTLAW: i'm pretty sure TOP lives in Missouri or within a state or two of there in the MIDWEST. i bet he hasn't seen a pond on either side lately. he does pick up more than a few things though so i'd think he'd make a great host.

also not surprising with your wisdom for so many interesting tools and of course your passion for finding a sweet deal that you are the top poster. I'd nominate you again if you had the time.

not much to brag about in my corner and mostly doing home fix ups getting ready to get our 3 or so months of rain in the PNW.

cheers all and hope you all might find that gem you've been wanting or hoping to find.

It may be slow, but we're still on track to meet or beat last year's count.
352 pages - 319 pages = 33 pages left.
7028 posts (some after the new year) - 6371 = 657 posts left.

As for next year's thread, I was hoping to be fat on turkey before we started that conversation. :lol_hitti

I've been slow on garage sales due to having a tree cut down and milled into lumber, along with on a quest to get a new place to live with a big garage. We shall see....

Later I said but didn't expect to be the next poster. OK here goes. First a couple of tools adding up to $25. Couple of Snappy ferret ratchets with a 7/16 socket, Utica round nose pliers, Starret 50' metal tape. AND a Charles Parker 29x.

As you see the vise is damaged but still usable and for the $10 I took it. One of the ratchets has surface rust but works beautifully.

Next sale was pretty iffy but I ended up buying this antique sign. The bracket is wrought iron though pretty badly pitted, and the wooden sign is badly termite damaged. However it has provenance to at least early 1900s. The bracket may be earlier. It will get stabilized and hang outside my shop. The clock is in **** state but it was free. Oh yeah the sign was $30.

So that's it for today I might try and catch up previous weeks but don't hold your breath.

I haven't checked in in awhile. Been busy with a very large lot of vintage military surplus tools. Cleaning, sorting, inventorying. Over 400 items! I'll have to start a couple threads on some of the more interesting tools.

I did get out to the Early Bird this morning...

20161111_103934_zpssrqyta3o.jpg

Also got a USGI Coal Bag (not shown above).

The hinge handles are both 3/8-ich square drive. A pebbled Plomb 5265 that has been ground down on only two sides for some reason (it won’t fit a 1/4-inch square drive so I’m not sure what they thought they were trying to accomplish), and a Williams B-40.

The file handles are DISSTON.

The 12-inch adjustable crescent wrench is a Snap-On/Blue-Point that looks as if it was made by Diamond Calk.

The flaring tool is a =CRAFTSMAN= No. 553 CU. I suspect 1950’s. Having a buddy look it up in a catalog.

Staying with CRAFTSMAN, I was happy to see a wartime “CI” 1033C.

The adjustable wrenches with the black enamel finish are 6-inch and 8-inch Heller Masterrenches. There are two types in the 1939 catalog, toothed jaws like these (for pipes) and smooth jaws (for nuts and bolts). Note the 5/8-inch square opening in the end of the handle. Not sure if there was any wartime application for these, but given the name, the brand, and the logo, I had to have them.

The clamp lathe dog is a Williams Vulcan No. 61. It’s a spittin’ image for the figure in the 1943 Williams catalog.

I normally don’t collect primitives, but the adjustable alligator wrench is a Kraeuter “THE VICTOR”. One jaw is toothed, the other smooth. Interesting tool.

The short reversible ratchet is a Lowell No. 11. I don’t think it’s missing the male drive plug. I think it’s female 5/8-inch square drive.

The machinists’ parallel clamps are L.S. Starrett No. 161-D with 4” jaws and 2-3/4 inch opening capacity.

The familiar pattern “IMPROVED WALCO PIPE WRENCH” is an 8-incher of post-war vintage (1949), but I couldn’t resist the NOS string and tag (…jaw and nut zinc plated…).

The big tube bender is a Parker No. 8 (O.D. 1/2”). Without intent, I am slowly gathering a set. I found a Parker No. 4 (O.D. 1/4”) and a No. 6 (O.D. 3/8”) last week. Two different retirees selling off their stuff. I am sure that all three of these were put to good use at Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station in the 40’s or 50’s.

Nice finds Lug! I have a few of the masterrench's in both breeds, I really like the smooth jaw, much better than an adjustable. Not sure why it died out. (There are Chicom knock offs, out there so be warned)

One of the 8"ers, I have in my camp gear for prop tank use.

On the thread, the next year's thread wail be the 6th annual! See what you started with an innocent post Jeff? ;)

Here's what was in the OD canvas roll-up.... a nearly complete set of non-reversible ratcheting wrenches with snap-over jaws, all Herbrand, from the late 1960’s Triangle era. (When Herbrand, Bonney, and Utica were all under one roof down in Spartanburg, S.C.) The set has an 11-digit FSN (5120-474-7227). It’s missing the 3/8 and the 1/2 wrenches. It has the 7/16, 9/16, and 5/8 through 1 inch. Not my era, but couldn't leave them behind.

It’s interesting that the tools are marked HERBRAND with the Triangle Corporation logo (/\), but the roll-up is marked Triangle.

For all the guys who like combination planes - a Wards Master Quality #45 - made by Stanley - long and short rods, slitter, full complement of cutters with holder, both depth stops, and two extra spurs - $20.00.

A little cleaning of very minor surface rust and this baby has a home! No cutter appears to have ever been sharpened or honed!

It was a long trip, but worth the drive and the hunt. Got to meet up with Taumac for lunch.

I hit a couple of G Sales this morning and didnt find much, an electrical sub panel for my garage build and a stool for the garage. Then at 3 an Estate sale I had forgotten about opened up. I went by and scored a good bunch of stuff for $30.

Plumb Ball Peen, Plumb 48 oz mini sledge, Plumb Hatchet, Plumb speed wrench, Bonney Ball Peen, A non marked leather handle ball peen, Walsco 50 ft steel tape measure, small rusty vise with no markings found yet, a very heavy "Hammer" type thing, neat old golden Rod oil can, small clamps, and some other odds and ends.... not too bad for a friday here with only 5 sales all together.

Wow, that is an awesome find. I'm still a beginner at this woodworking thing, but some day I hope to find a similar one and learn.

and old CMan circ saw that I could not pass up for $4. Spins real easy, needs a new power cord and some clean up. Also a few Starrett smalls. One of the calipers has the 1885 patent.

No sales for me today.
Went to a 4-hour "Beer Tasting" event last night. 53 cask brewed beers and ciders from all over the US and the U.K. to sample. It's an annual beer snobs beergasm. I usually come home near blind. (Yes, we always have a designated driver) Then when going to bed I stubbed my toe, might have broken it. Needless to say, I wasn't going to get out of bed this morning to drive out to the only sale listed with so-so tools. Maybe I'll try the flea market tomorrow if the toe is feeling better.

Good hunting to all !

I stopped by an estate sale on the way back from running errands and picked up this set of MAC SAE wrenches and a 3/8" Snap-On speed handle for a total of $7.

Nice. I really like the Fay style, with the square legs, a lot better than the Yankee style with the flat legs. Starrett discontinued the Fay style a year or two ago :-(

Not much action here either. two planned stops nothing at the TOO's (one had signs up for TOMORROW...

First stop had the Radio thing for $3 (the aluminum box is worth more than that), and the washers and snaps for a buck.

Second stop had the two ratchets (Crescent and SK) for $2, and the tea lights for a buck.

attachment.php

Looked the radio over and guessed the power needed was 12V. A good guess as the "internal power" was 8 AA's in series. The batteries were of course corroded so I peeled those out, and gave the battery pack a vinegar bath and scrubbing.

attachment.php

I saw no mic connection or a "push to talk" button so guessed it was receive only (true). Frequency is from 150 to almost 153 Mhz, in 12 channels and 5 band,s so 60 distinct defined frequencies.

I put in batteries and used some metal for a crude antenna, and tried it out. it works! I get static and on one place some varying squeals...

attachment.php

MFG is AVM instrument company, and while I was unable to quickly find there website, I did find they have been making wildlife tracking gear since 1967. the address on the box is Livermore CA but they are now in Colfax? :dunno:

Probably not worth anything to anyone, but If not I can rep-use the box...

Or find some transmitters that work and put one on each of your kids. :bounce:

Only two sales today - but several small sets were worth the trip.

Vintage Craftsman socket set in metal container, Starrett smalls, calipers, etc.

Another set of vintage measuring tools.

Screw thread sizes by Starrett.

Smallest pair of Channellocks I've found.

Another set of 3/8" drive sockets by Indestro. The 7/16" is missing but replaced by SK of the same size. The 7/16" deepwell is a six-point by SK.

Saw a CL post for a free drill press needing work. Figured it was probably some HF special that I wouldn't be interested in. Decided to go anyway and drug this home:

Crown top Craftsman with a broken driven pulley. I haven't found a model number yet. The guy said you can't get parts for it anymore, so he bought a new one.

Found a sale today that was described as "90 years of accumulation" and they weren't kidding:
Some pics from the basement shop -

My haul, for $12.50 -

Channellock and Crescent pliers, Billings & Spencer wrench, Craftsman punches, various brands of taps, a couple Shrader valve pullers, Stanley screwdriver, Indestro hammer, Ridgid pipe cutter, and of course - a padlock!

I think I may need Kellyanne Conway to come to my house and take my eBay account away. I keep bidding at 3am. Thank god I don't have a Twitter account, I may accidentally end up in the White House.

Another box showed up in the mail today. This time it was a set of 5 Williams short metric wrenches. They still need to be cleaned.

12mm, 14mm, 15mm, 16mm, and 18mm. All three-line superwrenches.

I think I may have an 11mm floating out the Postal ether as well. :twak:

That little Starrett bracket for holding two combination square blades together at right angles is incredibly handy. You can use the base to hold the blades square and reach down to get both a horizontal and a vertical position at one go.

The one for splicing two blades into a single longer blade is interesting, but I'm not certain if ever user it.
