2017 Garage Sale Thread

Not a garage sale.. But up here in the frozen north-estate sales and the occasional auction is the only action we have.. So-between CL and occasional scores at the prior... I must suffice.. So CL was good to me today.. 90 mile round trip for a near perfect condition 3/4hp 8" Craftsman Block 397.19350 for $50.. Only thing left is the rare 1hp and I'll have them all!! [emoji41]

It still has the original Craftsman wheels on it..




Only debris on it is dead bugs..

Powers up and runs beautifully..


Oh-and no pics but I won a Versa Vise for $25 at a local online auction..

My first score of the year, a mid-60's Craftsman shaper on a pedestal!

This thing is almost complete, and I really don't think it was ever used. No sawdust in any little nook or cranny. The fence wasn't pictured, but included. I never knew they made pedestals into the mid 60's, I almost thought this was restored before, but no, its the original dark gray / black paint.

My first buys for the new year.
Traveling for work in Madison, GA yesterday and stopped in at a flea mall.
Found this #4 Garland mallet, just need to decide what inserts to pit in there.


I had scoped out a pawn shop last week knowing I'd being here. Stopped by and door was locked, damn! Looking through window I could see its one I really needed to dig through. Went and ate lunch and came back by, relief, it's open.

A lot of stuff, just nothing much that appealed. On the way out, I was going through a stack on set of boxes and found a SO ratcheting screwdriver, pry bar and a Dewitt Vise grips, $ 15 for the bunch.


Back home today local sale, pair of hard wire cutters marked GFC, made in west Germany , SO drill bit set, the must have 9/16" SO $1 wrench, and some other misc items.

Went to the frozen tundra market. There were all of 5 vendors out there and one more brave soul setting up.

Here is my scrappy but somewhat interesting little haul for 7 bucks:

Picked this lot up from a regular I buy from. I got everything for $240 which I think is a steal.

1. Sunex 3 ton aluminum floor jack
2. Matco Taiwan hose pliers and angle pliers. These retail for over $400 new which is insane for Taiwan made pliers.

3. Snap-on short and deep 1/4 metric sockets to complete the set from when I got the ratchet, extensions, and mid sockets from him.

4. Snap-on 3 piece green pliers set
5. Snap-on butane torch
6. Snap-on 1/4 wobble
7. Mac knee mat

First pick up of the new year! Jacobsen gt-14 tractor. Got it from a semi local member. A HUGE THANKS TO DARWYN by the way. He gave me this tractor and its awesome! I plan on getting started fixing it soon as soon as it gets a little warmer. I have to get tubes first and a spark plug, points and condenser, oil...etc.. anyway heres a pick next to my tired old yard man. From a side veiw it dwarfs the old one.





I also got some literature with it, including the original warranty! I wonder if its still valid? Lol

First sale I went to yesterday, found an old Craftsman Variable Speed Jigsaw. Works great except they apparently sliced through the cord and the temporary fix isn't very good (look at the pic and notice the exposed wires, lol, so needs a new cord, no biggie. Paid $5

Second sale this morning, got a Gorilla Ladder brand 13' multi-position ladder. Even included the extra U bends to make it two short A-frames for scaffolding type work. Paid $40 (tried for $35), he wouldn't come down any lower. Still, since the best price on sale I've see was $100 new, I can't complain. I used my neighbor's a couple times when I needed an extension-type ladder. These can be nifty at times.

I've been on the lookout for a professional quality tile saw to do the kitchen backsplash. I've used the Home Depot brand saw for some bathroom tile over the summer and it was such poor quality that I returned it the next day. This saw is an MK101 with 1hp top mount motor. The plastic tray is cracked and needs to be replaced which runs about $50 but the rest is fine.

My plan is to replace the tray and while I'm at it I'll clean up the unit and may replace bearings if needed. It's a bit overkill for the backsplash but I'm a sucker for big industrial tools. This will make quick work of the tile job.



Paid asking price of $200 and that included delivery. It also included a few spare diamond blades and a miter gauge to lock onto the sliding table.

Today I had the opportunity to visit the home of a family friend whose father passed away. He was a mechanical engineer, and over the years had amassed a decent workshop. Nobody in the family was interested in the tools, so she called me. Found a handful of items from around the shop, but what really caught my eye was the machinist box. Also got the Wilton Cadet that was mounted to his bench. I made a video too!

Went through the box and cleaned up a lot of the junk, but kept all the tools in the drawers as he had them. Fittingly, I found a label in the top left drawer with his name on it, which I have now applied to the box.

Any idea what the story on the Shaker 100 patch is?

Great opening post from out new leader for this year! And, already in the first few days many are hitting it big even with the winter garage sale slow down for many of us.
My first purchases of the year have come from an auction and I just traveled to pick them up today.
First is a GM Performance Parts wall cabinet.


Next are three nice gasoline signs. These are new and made of steel with a foam middle layer but are 47" in diameter and I could not pass up at a reasonable price. I could never afford real antiques at this size. Will make great shop decoration.


Then two more old Daisy BB guns to add to my collection. They are pretty used but basically intact.


A big Tonka Turbo Diesel Crane/Shovel truck.


An all plastic quick release vise made in England by Record. I did not realize this was plastic until after placing the minimum $5 bid and no one else wanted it so lucky me I guess.


Six antique Farm license plates. The first Farm plates I have in my collection now.


And a vintage Sunbeam mixer wanted by another family member with both bowls, normal beaters and dough hook.

I went out to a couple of nearby estate sales despite single-digit temperatures! The first was a bust - lots of like-new Snap-On stuff at like-new prices, and no negotiating. None. Fergit it. Went to the second and found it pretty picked-over from yesterday, but there was this tub of wrenches and sockets. I took a quick peek (quick because it was in an unheated garage) liked what I saw. It was marked $2 apiece and today was Half Price Day. So, I offered the guy $10 for the whole tub, just to save him the trouble of counting it all, doncha know. He took it.
Half ****, but some nice big Barcalo DOE's - 15/16x1 and 1 1/16x 1 1/8, a 7/8 combo, and several other USA wrenches- Action, Sparta, K-D, Eclipse, Sears (oops, that one's from Japan) and about a dozen assorted Mac and Matco sockets. Twelve pounds in all.
There were a couple of interesting ones. A 7/8 combo clearly has the Barcalo pattern- the 1955 patent angled box end, depressed size field- but is marked Life-Time and bears what looks like a Crescent logo. Whaaaa?
Another, a 9/16x5/8 DOE looks quite modern, but is stamped with a B that looks like a Billings logo.
Any thoughts?

OK NO yardsales or even estate sales since the 17th of LAST month, so we went to the "antique district" of the area and browsed, just to get out of the house. . Mostly silly $$ for junk or well overpriced if not junk (I passed on two Coleman lanterns that were 2-3X over priced)

We did find one seller's "booth" (Most sellers share space in a store) and got these:

A Brass case (matches? Needles? ), See's Candies "Hammer", the "S" is for my youngest daughter, An old jewelry box key, a pepper box gun charm, and a plastic box with these pins?

I think these are award pins of some sort. they attach with a threaded "pin" and knurled nut, so is intended for a prepared hole...

This closeup sort of shows the Main Evergreen the red letters are "RB" on the left and there is a red "royal" lion in the upper right.

Anyone seen these before? I'm assuming fom the mid 60's based on the date tags...

Any idea what the story on the Shaker 100 patch is?

It's either the 100th anniversary of the City of Shaker Heights (Ohio) PD or possibly from the Shaker 100 which is a group that aids the Police/Fire departments.

BFBOB yes that is in fact a Crescent Life-Time wrench made by Barcalo. One of many brands they made wrenches for. They made Eclipse too.

Thanks for the info, 3Bay. I have a couple of other Eclipses, and wouldn't have guessed their heritage. They look really, really plain - boring. That brings the total of Barcalo products in this tub to 8.
Somebody dope slap me. Billings' B is in a triangle, not a hexagon!
The hex B is for Bonney - according to the marvelous Alloy Artifacts, used on the Bon-E-Con line. My wrench is not so marked, just the size, part no. USA and the hex B.

Funny you should say that. I'm a Ford guy too but keeping my Fords going requires green and this cabinet was a good price so I'll clean it up and most likely sell it.

Hit up a few sales yesterday even though it was below freezing LOL.

First one was an estate sale that advertised tools but when I got there the guy running it said the heirs couldn't decide who got what so no tools.

Pic 1, 2: However as I was going down the street half a block away I found this old Bigfoot Powerwheels sitting in the garbage and picked up the wood tale top to pole flange as well. The Powerwheels should clean up a bit when the weather gets warmer. Too bad the fake engine is missing. The flange may be repurposed as part of a grinder stand.

2nd stop was an estate sale that started on Friday, person running it tends to be high and no pictures of anything I was interested in so I hadn't bothered. With few other options I went since it was half price day and found a few goodies. Paid $30.75 for everything.
Pic 3, 4: My favorite tool item was the goggles in the Craftsman Crown label box. The goggles were nasty and took some cleaning, the lens is a Craftsman and I got most of the paint spots off in hot water. The elastic band was toast however. The safety tag was still on the band and the original $1.99 sticker is on the box.
Pic 5: I found some other Craftsman goodies including a pole saw, 2 kitchen knives, one is Craftsman Stainless USA and has the late 70's rectangular logo and the other is Craftsman Vanadium USA and has the early underlined logo. Also got the brace drill bit, Sears Inspection tag and padlock made in Germany with no key.
Pic 6: A few lubricant tins and a GM "Caroma" air freshener which smelsl like aftershave to me.
Pic 7: A Twinplex razor blade stropper, vintage dragster toy and for my friends Coca Cola, Mickey Mouse and railroad collectibles.

I got a few items that made it worth while - the plug strip, full spray can and glazing compound and rubber mallet. Then came an assortment of rusty to terribly rusty wrenches. Nothing of note but a Thorsen 1/2" combo and a long-C Craftsman DOE so rusted up I can't even see the size. It's cooking in the e-tank now ... we'll see.

The most interesting piece may be the WestCraft tape measure. Western Auto is about extinct, at least around here (St. Louis). There's only one store I know of, about 125 miles away.

So, checking out, the guy glanced into my half-full bag and said, That's about a $3 bag. I said, well, we could pretend the trailer hitch fits into it... SOLD! Five buxworth for sure. Now I just have to figure out what the hitch fits.

Finds for today, didn't even have to leave the house. I had sold a table saw to a guy and he dabbles with estate sale up north. He brought back a box of stuff and this is what I picked out of it to buy.

A clamp, Grand tank clamp, a big square file, Tremco wrench, I like the steel handle and a different looking hammer.

I did that 10 years ago. I put a 12V tractor battery in it and it was off to the races for several years. When my son was done with it it went back to the curb and someone else took it.

The tractor battery probably wasn't the best solution - but it worked.

OK, Bluebolt, here ya go. About a third of the chrome is gone, but there's a lot more steel left than I thought there would be. Not pretty by a long shot but perfectly usable. About half an hour in the e-tank plus a couple minutes' scrubbing with a fine stainless wire brush, rub in a little WD40, and voila!

Oh, and the really horribly rusty wrench in the pic above revealed after 2 hours in the tank that it's a Barcalo-Buffalo 15/16x1". Looks about as good as the Crafty, and also quite usable.

I have one of those Auto Scrollers laying around in a cabinet somewhere. Them come in handy sometimes in really tight spaces.
