Man, Merc... you & Nine find the best stuff down there... I hate you both! :lol_hitti

Today I'm *planning* on doing my pawn shop rounds and hitting up a few more garage sales. Never know what you will find...

Jason, we're trying to keep you from poaching down this way :D Next time you happen upon a deal in this area, hit us up...you never know what we're getting into.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

topop101: Not sure what exactly happened, but I wish you a speedy recovery. There's no better treatment than getting out to go to a sale with tools...
Outlawmws: You **** on that Proto box :)

Waggoner72: Sounds like the stuff dreams are made of! I'm close, but not close enough to come browse your sale.

bagged89s10: Sweet deal! I picked up it's brother with a stand this morning.

I had a great $80 day. A 1/3 HP block grinder on CraigList, then I re-visited a sale that Nine and I had been to several times. I picked for about an hour at the latter, gathering a bucket of consumables. On the way out I was feeling sort of brave, and dug a little deeper in a dilapidated shed that was piled to the ceiling while the floor was collapsing. I moved a few things and in the distance I spotted what I thought was a round top block grinder. Turns out it was a Belsaw grinder. The switch was busted in the off position, so I got it thrown in with the bucket o' stuff. Bypassed the switch and it runs slicker than cat ****, though I will replace the bearings.

Yesterday I was way on the opposite side of town when my neighbor texted me saying I needed to get to where he was asap. He found a sale that an old lady was moving out. Had bunch of hand tools in garage, but then she said "there's more in the shed out back"... We all know where this is going, right?

He was there an hour and a half digging through the shed sorting through the USA & China stuff... I think he ended up with like 3 or 4 buckets full of misc wrenches, sockets, and a few ratchets. I think he paid about $7 a buck-full.... lol.

By the time I got back and we went back to her house she was not there. :( I'm going to try and swing by later this morning and see if she will let me rummage through the shed and see if my neighbor missed anything.

No new sales today. :(

Been following local firehall fleas, hoping something would turn up. $6 to justify the half-hour drive today. Dunlap combos, Indestro doe, Oxwall ratchet, Penn Reels tool, Stanley adjustable wire stopper.

not a Garage sale, bt a CL add. Some have prob already seen this in other threads, but it might as well go here. Plomb top box I scored from a guy that picked a old time gas station that shut down in Dallas after the owner passed. Got a good deal on it, now taking the paint off. And then to decide what to do from there... anyone have any info on this box? Pre ww2 Im guessing...

wow you are a big spender, do you have a separate thread of all your big purhases deals as it truly gives another meaning to garage sale,

others- garage sale, small purchases, tools
waggoner- you hear garge sale and buy the whole shop

haha

Finally got my hands on a 12" Bandsaw on a pedestal! $150 for that and another table saw... which I really don't need another table saw, but... parted it out on ebay already.

Deadly slow day today... until the last stop (which had a heck of a "lead in" in the add about "same house for >30 years and having been married for >60!

I got there as they opened it up, (15 early...) Everyone was milling around the driveway and I'd bought a crystal vase and 2 jars of old marbles for a buck and a half. Then I asked if tools were going to be pulled out, after a little hemming and hawing, I was given over to the man of the house, (eighties?) and he took me to has back shed. very cluttered, clearly he'd worked at this and that over the years.

Then I saw the red 6 drawer tool box, and it's a Proto. I asked if it was for sale and we dug it out a bit and opened and closed drawers. "Sure, I'll sell it and all the tools in it for $25. I just want it gone. I'd kept seeing "SK" as we looked and I immediately agreed I found another SK socket box on the bench and "Oh, that goes with your box!" Another one on the floor and that was also included as well and an SK driver on the wall...

So his daughter shows up (about my age) and asks her dad if she can send others back here? and he says "Sure! I just sold this gentleman the red tool box, it's all paid for!" (It was not...) I corrected him and paid her before things could change, and she thanks me for being honest while he says "Dang! I was sure you paid me..."

So this is what $25 got me today:

The box as I saw it (the top was open...)

Most of the SK stuff - Wrenches - the yellow metric set was complete the SAE missing a 1/2 and 9/16

attachment.php

The sockets and Pliers: the complete 3/8 drive is metric, the rest is mostly SAE.

Outlaw, you **** almost as much as you did with the SO wrenches last year.
What a find.
I have a SK 3/8" set like the one that my Dad gave me when I was about 15.

No reason to take it elsewhere, this is where the interest is in such buys.

i know but if someone wants to read about large purchases, clearances, machine shops and large equipment, like the gear waggoner gets deals with, to have to look through small fry, like spanners and small stuff gets annoying.

i like the small stuff too, but there are different leagues, a small homowner garage vs a business garage

and some more:

- some wrenches including CMan, Easco and a Blue Point
- some dental tools, probably need cleaning before using again.

will keep some and sell some of this and the previous post. About $10 spent total.

I have to chime in... Last weekend I spent big bucks at a auction and posted Saturdays haul but not Sundays because it was just more of the same sort of stuff... Bedrock planes, Braces, antique furniture and such. On big purchases I tend to just show some of the highlights just so I don't take over the thread with a couple hundred photos of each item. Small picks I do some what but It's not too practical to post up tons of photos for me any way. I don't mind seeing others big picks though. Just my thoughts for what's it worth...

I'm with Outlaw--this thread is for all acquisitions, great and small. I enjoy reading about both here.

ALL: i agree that big or small purchases is what maybe makes this thread interesting. i don't usually post up huge purchases if it's all basically the same things, but i like seeing big and small stuff equally well.

if we start dividing the big and small, expensive and cheap we'll lose the flavor of the thread and also no matter how big or little we all like the hunt, find and purchase of another old or new tool or machine.

hope you are all having a great weekend and looks like some great finds so far.

i picked up another 40 inch wide Mayline flat file that i'll store parts or stuff in. these are built well enough to hold a couple hundred pounds of paper in each drawer so perfect for tools and stuff. also they were built maybe 50 or so years ago when the gauge of metal wasn't paper thin. also a lot of these come with covers and this one came with a few drawers that have dividers for smaller size drawings/paper.

cheers

okay after hearing the views and opinions, i have to agree with outlaw, drive and the rest of the garagejournal community

At the start all i could see was nice small deals, and then a sudden large bulk purchase, and then more nice small picks

but now can see its not the stuff that is bought but the trill and excitement of the hunt and that all purchases great and small from a huge factory to a single screw deserve to be here.

thanks opening my mind and happy picking,

Got the little Craftsman router table yesterday for $10 from OfferUp app... Find interesting things on there occationally...

The two 3/4" drive sockets, one is a Blackhawk, the other isn't stamped with a brand but it looks like an Indestro/Western/Wizard socket. I think my neighbor gave me them as a pitty gift after he got buckets and buckets of wrenches & sockets & ratchets for practically nothing... lol.

$10 electric chainsaw, figured why not...

$3 for a Workmate, in perfect shape to boot. Nice!

I'm going to throw out a big YOU **** to Outlaw on that Proto/SK score, $25, good grief, what a score.

I was out again ******* off the local residents holding yard sales with my cheapness and scored this Ridgid 848 48" aluminium pipe wrench for $45. Tried to get the guy lower, but he was not budging. Jaw teeth are nice and sharp, no damage. Not too shabby.

A lot of great scores this weekend! I unfortuntaely struck out again this weekend.

Missed on finally getting a block grinder, was 3 hours away from home on Friday and Saturday for work and the guy with the listing only bothered answering my messages when I was back home both days :(

I think there is someone on the site to enjoy each and every find posted. I'm not one to get a thrill from most power tools that many here get a thrill from. Hand tools are what really gets me going.

For the most part though I'm sure we can agree it's fun to see a huge clean out haul, or just a small haul of a couple tools with some detailed pictures.

It's nice to see everything from a car to a socket rolling through here. That's what makes it fun.

Nice though gloomy weather today, so I went out to the second day of a sale with some meager promise. I passed on the $40 bag of sockets and grabbed the little $7 green socket box. In it I found most of a set of Duro-Chrome 1/2" drive sockets. 13/16" down to 7/16, minus the 3/4 and 1/2. I thought I had a pretty good find until I cleaned, which I had to do immediately because it had such a stink. A bath in Simple Green took care of the smell, but also revealed the badly worn sockets. Some essentially unusable.
I went back to the bag of sockets, hefted it, looked at what I could see through the plastic - mostly Craftsman - and decided it wasn't such a bad deal after all. Also grabbed the Crafty 1" combo at $4.
The bag proved to contain 29 Crafty sockets and a scattering of Williams, Proto, Cornwell and the black deep Lisle which I think is an oxygen sensor socket.
There was a set of 1/2" drive sockets1/2" to 1 1/16" plus a couple of extras, some 3/8 deepwells and standards. Six pounds!
And since it was half price Sunday, I got it all for $25. I tried for $20, but nuthin doin.
The socket box is a puzzle. The paint looks exactly like my S-K machinist's chest, wrinkle finish and all, but it's way too flimsy and cheaply made to be S-K or Duro - at least I hope so!!

I agree with Outlaw, Drives, and 3Bay.
The great thing about this thread isn't seeing large or small posts. I don't care either way. For me it's seeing the great variety of items out there to be found. But even more important to me is hearing the stories of how the items were found. It could be about 1 screwdriver or the purchase of an entire machine shop, both are equally good. Posts that show pictures, but don't include the story hold little interest to me. I may look at the pictures to see what's out there, but I don't dwell on those posts like I would if the background was explained. For me, the story is the thing.

I want to hear about the successes as well as the failures. That's why my posts in this thread tend to be lengthy and detailed. Maybe it's TMI, but I want to give a real impression of how much work is actually going into creating that lucky find. Rare items magically appearing in your driveway don't happen without some kind of background effort. That effort is just as much a part of the hunt as taking the picture when all is said and done.

That said, no hunting for me this morning. I had to spend all morning with our accountant getting our family's taxes done. The good news, between Fed and State, my refund will buy me a carton of cigs in April. I'll call that a win.

I agree too... It's not really what you found, but where & how you found it... Anyone can buy something off eBay or walk into a store new... But digging around an old workshop and finding that one hidden gem covered in dust in the corner that everyone else passed over without giving a second glance... priceless... :)

I love the story behind everything, and when selling something I always try to pass it on to the next owner, whether they care or not... lol.

I think you guys summed up what is great about this thread. I will try and add some more details to the finds as yes there always is an interesting story behind the items. Since I had done well thurs and fri hitting the estates it was time for a Sat yard sale. This was advertised as a wood/ metal worker shop closing up- with a bunch of tools listed as well as vises (which was what interested me)- well it was 45min drive away and I decided to get there at least 1/4hr early as arriving 5mins early at the estate sales was too late (hate it when they open early and your not there). I showed up to a ordinary looking house with a couple ladies setting up what looked to be a crappy driveway ride by sale. Turned out there was a shop out back and it was a family cleaning out their late dads stuff was and was directed out the back of the house where the shop was. Well it was full of large old presses , lathe, drills , wood working stuff and machines I don't even know what they did. They were all old American tools and high prices on em. Maybe one day when I have a big shop I'd be a buyer but could only justify smaller items. Well as to the vises the guy in charge had about 12 drill press vises and said no bench vises ! I did find one buried in a corner and snagged it. So much cool old American stuff mixed with cheap HF quality stuff - so bizarre- sorry didn't get any pics of the sale but this was my take. Duracraft 5" vise, dewalt metal box, full universal o ring set , 15' chain n hooks , c clamps large Armstrong and lil CM, 2x wrench racks and a nice matco 250ftlbs T wrench. Green bucket included. I'll prob regret leaving a lot of cool shop stuff there but I only have a 2 car garage that fits one car ! All in all $65

A mixed day for me, I had meant to hit a good swap meet yesterday, but came down with a case of cocktail flu... So went to make up for it today, first hitting a local flea, that tends toward the antique crowd, picking up these:

Not cheap, $20 for the Stanley 101, $3.50 for the pamphlet. Then hit the end of an Estate sale spending $20 for the following:

Long C Craftsman tablesaw mitre gauge, pipe clamp, SK Wayne socket driver, socket chisel, Snap On screw starter, Snap on and P&C sockets and a Reed and Prince reamer. This was part of the twenty also:

Had some stuff in the drawers that came with it:

Then my wife called saying she was rushing the cat to the vet, and it looks like either cancer or kidney disease. This is the cat that was her buddy the year both of her parents died, so its kinda important. The cat is in for an overnight stay, waiting on the other vet to read the reports.

Sorry to hear about your cat... :( Always hard when a furry little friend is sick.

If you want to clean up your karma, you will ship me those drawers! :p

POST THAT ****! I don't care if it's tool related or not, it's how and where you found it, why got you out of bed and what made you decide to buy it that I like to see.

I wouldn't have bought the sea shell picture many pages back but I also wouldn't have bought the 48" pipe wrench either, I just like the pics and stories attached to them.

Ok, I may have lied a lil, it depends on the price of the sea shell pic and pipe wrench, I might would have bought them but I'm a tightwad... :lol_hitti

So I didnt acquire the amazing deal I saw at a Radioshack that was closing near my house but hopefully I give a heads up to any of you guys looking for amazing parts storage.

The Radioshack was selling 8 of their small parts storage cabinets for $150 for 8 cabinets, the ones that hold all the electronic components (resistors, swtiches, etc) and made of steel with ball bearing slides and dividers. I missed that deal by a day :(
