42* F and colder with the wind chill at the Early Bird today. Up here, that's a good thing, because the flea markets are open year round and only the die heard sellers and buyers come out in the fall and winter! No walking past endless tables of beanie babies and china and sewing machines and clothes to get to the garage guys.

Did okay! Small haul with some very unusual finds...

View media item 76757
Circa 1920's Kennedy Kits box (I'll post additional photos on the "Toolboxes" thread)

In front of the box:

- Aircraft Specialties "Magic Fingers" (flexible)
- 'Bell System L Goggles' case (Quickie Story: There was a bunch of drill bits in it, and I asked the guy if I could dump them out and buy "just the old case"... He never even batted an eye at the marking, which I did not go out of my way to point out!)
- Wartime Diamalloy 8" adjustable
- post-war BONNEY B17 U.S.A (no MADE IN) dykes

On top of the box, left (1/4-inch) to right (3/8-inch):

Midget
- wartime Snap-On 9/16 crowfoot
- wartime black ox Walden-Worcester 3109 6-pt 9/32" socket
- wartime BONNEY V8 1/4-inch drive 6-pt socket, with original OD baked enamel!
- wartime BONNEY V9 1/4-inch drive 6-pt socket, also with original OD baked enamel!
Trust me, I scoured all the boxes the guy had for more. No dice.
- wartime THORSEN universal joint, unmarked except for brand and "1/4"
In all the midget sets I have collected - and that probably numbers into the dozens, I have NEVER seen a universal joint before! Just to make sure my experience isn’t anecdotally erroneous, I just checked a bunch of vintage catalogs - including Duro, Williams, and Bonney, and nobody else made uni joints smaller than 3/8-inch drive.

Junior
- post-war BONNEY LT12 3/8" deep socket
- post-war BONNEY LT18 9/16" deep socket
- post-war Walden 4029 universal joint
- wartime Williams 706410 11/16 swivel socket
- an unknown universal joint with a Plomb 5228 7/8" socket stuck on it!

Nice haul Lugz! It was 28* here this AM, but I don't have an early bird anywhere around to visit on Fridays.

- wartime BONNEY V9 1/4-inch drive 6-pt socket, also with original OD baked enamel!
:drool:I could probably use those midget Bonney sockets if you don't have a use for them...

I have a chrome plated Walden 1/4" drive universal. I can dig it out and snap a pic if you're interested in seeing it. Unless your comment is directed solely toward wartime midget universals.

Let me think on it some.

Thanks. No need for the pic - I trust you. Wasn't thinking wartime, per se, just this era vintage in general. Maybe it's just me, but it struck me as very unusual when I saw it, and I stood there thinking that didn't recall seeing one in the wild or in a catalog before.

I think, at least in that era, the flexible shaft nut driver would have functioned much the same way as a universal. And those seem to be much more prevalent.

You may be right about that, Unaiu!

I posted some closeups of the home-made Plomb swivel socket in the Plomb thread, here.

Thorsen 1/4-inch drive uni joint in the Thorsen thread, here.

Snap-On 1/4-inch drive crowfoot in the Snap-On thread, here.

c. 1920's Kennedy Kits electrician's box in the Toolboxes thread, here.

Bonney dykes, junior deep sockets, and OD-clad midget sockets in the Bonney affliction thread, here.

Here is that Bell System goggles case. When I initially reported the find upthread a little ways, I was thinking, from memory, or momentary lack of attention to detail, it was 'Bell System L'. You know, like Bell System A, Bell System B, as if their equipment and tools issue went all the way up to L. Which was ignorant, I suppose. Now that I see that I transcribed the marking incorrectly, and the "L" follows "BELL SYSTEM GOGGLES", I'm not so sure. Maybe the L is Large? :headscrat

See thumbnails.

I hit a garage sale last weekend and probably over spent at 125.
The SO pieces will get exchanged with my SO dealer.
The MAC driver set had been used one. The Plomb spinner is actually a Challenger P-49.
1/2 drive sockets, SO, SK, Plomb, NB, Prort, Williams
1/2 drive ratchets, Craftsman, SK and Duro (male/female drive). SO pry bar.
Mirror is a BP. SO and MATCO hex sockets
The hinged wrenches are OTC. The hammer head is IH. Penens sliding T and P&C DBE.
The 24" 1/2 to 3/8 ext is a Mac. Mustang 1/2 speeder and Husky 1/4 speeder.

Nice haul, Tin Medic. Someone did a number on that SnapOn breaker bar! Nice SnapOn box too. Is there a date on that?

Lugz, that goggles case is cool! I'd love to find one of those as it almost looks like it would fit my prescription safety glasses I recently got (allowed two sets under the old Vision plan, and I don't need distance glasses, so...) A bit of felt or velvet lining, maybe some padding in strategic places, and Voila!

Bobcat - good find on the trailer. Does it need any work, or is it good to go ?

It needs some work, new lights (I want LEDs) and I will service the brakes, but other than that it is ready to go. Towed it home from Berlin,MA and it behaved extremely well behind my truck:3gears:

I could count the vendors at my flea market on this chilly 26* F morning on two hands, but still managed to come home with some goodies.

The humdrum DUNLAP socket set box was hiding some gems…

View media item 76777
Mix of 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch drive pieces, mainly Plomb or Plomb WF, some Snap-On, Hinsdale, Bonney and Duro-Chrome. All wartime or immediate post-war. That spinner, a New Britain-made SPARTA, is the most modern thing in the box. Most of it, regardless of brand, was painted red at some point. I’ve found Signal Corps sets like that from the early 50s, but I suspect this was a civilian set someone put together from a Plomb set, filled it in with other pieces, painted everything proprietary red, and stuck it in a DUNLAP box.

The waterpump pliers are J.P. Danielson. Date-coded, like most JPD tools, but I can’t make it out yet. Hoping for WWII.

The Diamalloy is wartime (no horseshoe logo) with a 9/16” 12-point box end hanging hole. Second one in as many days.

Sockets are wartime Crafty BE, post-war Crafty (U), THORSEN, Cornwell, and Duro-Chrome. The uni is also Duro.

That little ratcheting DBE is the now the smallest I have – a DUNLAP 5/16 x 1/4.

EDIT: I’ll post close-ups later.

Lugz, cool finds! Usually its Danialson with the box end on the hanging hole. I only have one 8" Diamalloy, and one 6" Craftsman with them besides the Danialsons.

VERY slow day for tools today, but some interesting things none the less.

I've been to this house a number of times over he years. mostly its nada, but today there was a new player there and he had the tools Stanley aluminum handled snips with inlaid blades; blades seem decent so these are likely to see more use for light work. the Lufkin is an eight ft folder. and the whistle was just for fun! I'll add it to the instrument collection... $3.50 all

One of thos e"as seen on TV! hoses; Mt sister's sig other sewars by these, so thought I'd give it a try! the toy/modles ship was inside the match box, and I got all threes for $5

Closeups of the ship: It appears to have been factory made from wood, and the masts are pins. Its the Von Der Tann, which was a WWI Battle cruiser, and was first in its class and the first with steam turbines. Very High end in its day.

The clock was a buck as it was not operational, and I liked the style, and thought it might be an easy fix.

No dice. The plug has resistance across it, but the motor turns sticky. so I put a drop of oil and will see it that loosens things up. It has a bucks worth of stuff on it in any case. Its pretty old as the voltage is marked 110V...

The Book is 1937, 22 short stories. cents fifty.

ALL: some of you don't visit the BIG VISE THREAD often or at all so thought i'd post a FPU BISON Polish made vise i picked up off Craigslist last night after moving one of my daughters and her hubby. the FPU's back jaw is actually the moving one and the width of it's jaws are 4 inch. it's not super stout like some of mine are, but the craftsmanship and quality of it are up there with any of the top brands.

Outlaw: looks like you did some Christmas shopping GJ style. WELL DONE!!

Bobcat: other than maybe paint you did fantastic and i've been looking for a good used trailer that isn't the price of a new one for a while now in my area and hoping to find one soon. congrats!!

So this stained glass manufacturer in Portland, Oregon, was pretty much forced out of business after an EPA inspection at another stained glass manufacturer showed excessive hazardous gas emissions. People got sick.

The forced out glass business was Obsidian Glass. Here's their building.

Center high bay and two low bays, lots of windows made to dissipate heat from the furnaces they used to make their glass.

Here my catch up from the last couple weeks.

That's a Stanley 24" level, iron! Heavy little thing. The vials look to be adjustable. Picked up some older Channel lok pliers.

Came home with this Craftsman King-Seeley 103.23150 jig saw this morning. Do I need it? No. Do I know what I'm going to do with it? No. But for the cost of a pork roll and egg sandwich and a cup of coffee - and I mean that literally - I couldn't leave it. :)

I detect a trend!

If you recall, I came home with a tiny Craftsman metalworking lathe a few weeks go. I never did show any more photos of that.

I know that serious machinery guys scoff at the size of the lathe (not to mention the pot metal gears), and perhaps the woodworkers scoff at the jig saw, too, but there is a nostalgia market out there for these Craftsman badged 40's and early 50's era machines.

Lugz, would that lathe fit across the back of watchmaker's bench?

Edit: Also, the gears are "Zamak" somewhat better than pot metal, but still the weak link...

Do you have any accessories for the lathe, or did you buy it stripped like that?

Probably, but it's about 50 years newer than my jeweler's workbench, if that's what you're thinking! :)

Yes, I was being excessively derogatory.

As is, Dave. Besides the tailstock, it's missing a few other pieces, too, including some gears. Those are typically replaced anyway, though. But it was cheaper than cheap - basically a throw in.

Lugz, I have one of those lathes, they are actually pretty handy. Great for cutting bushings, turning threads, etc. but they are too big for watchmakers.

LUG: I'm right there with you and trying to now say do i NEED it or is it worth STORING until i do. SPACE IS USUALLY THE MAIN CONCERN for most of us and if you have the SPACE and especially the NEED for any of those then WELL DONE.

or maybe good trading fodder.
