Jeff, I acknowledged that cabinet in September...maybe my discursive elaboration made it unclear - that last roundup was just for the month of November, not a summary of the year. Or maybe I’m missing what you mean.
Welcome to September! As we enter the last third of the much-maligned Year2020, it’s time for a Picker-of-the-Year update.

The August roundup boasts...
9 “*****” for Davefr for three remarkable Crafty heists
6 “*****” for pelletman, acknowledging varied finds
5 “*****” for r_olson_06 for Plomb-heavy bargains
4 “*****” each for tin medic, bmwrd0 and 3jakes
3 “*****” each for b.well, David99, WNYflyer, freudianfloyd and alinc100
2 “*****” each for ShadowRuleZ, Provincial, Ryan_340, Oregon_rock_crusher, jeffmoss26 and Cruzan80
1 “****” each for Lprock, toolmiser, MercLSU, TOTO, duddly, Outlawmws and ozaudio!

WOW! So much suckage! Congratulations to all, for nimbly netting so many deals in awkward conditions.

Suckage for sure! Man they had some nice stuff there. That Atlas gear set is cool! I have never seen one in the holder like that.

I have an identical set - I believe it is original to my Atlas 10" lathe from the late 40s/early 50s.

Love old farm sales - all kinds of cool stuff. I really like the Rockwell DP myself.

Nice haul, OR, especially stop #3. I haven't found a "lasagna" pick (layers and layers of stuff) in quite a while--they are among my favorites.

You ****!

Thanks all and thanks for the schooling on the spring tubing benders!

Went to a sale out in the sticks this morning and knew I was in trouble when I picked up the first tool and found a printout of a similar tool for sale on eBay. I asked if the eBay prices were what was being asked at this sale and was told offers would be considered. I wandered around the garage for a few minutes and had decided to leave with only a new CM red drill index unexpectedly priced at $1 when I saw a table with LS Starrett tools. Curiosity got the best of me so I took a peek but those eBay printouts put me off again. When I saw the box with no printout I called the lady over and asked what the price was. She asked if I knew what the things were worth and I said I didn't know what she could get for them on eBay, but I would only offer $15. She considered and then accepted the offer.

Pencil Divider No. 596

After that I met tin medic at day #2 of the pickers sale. I found most of these things under several layers of crapola. $4 Total.

Peg board hook rack--sorely needed!
CM Push Drill with five viable bits
Millers Falls 1/4 Chisel
CM Crown Glass Cutter
S-K C-16 Combo--needed for a tool roll
Austin Nichols & Co wine opener--missing the corkscrew. It just called to me...

There's a nor'easter roaring into New England right now, plus I'm in a post-travel quarantine, so I'm staying home this weekend.

Here are two items I picked last weekend out of a toolbox at a Virgina going out of business sale (a getting-out-of-the-house diversion during aforementioned travel). The sale was outdoors, in the country, and my buddy and I were the only other ones there.

Bonney T35 ratchet, FO date code, so likely June 1937, 2nd year of production

Snap-On WA13 tie rod tool, no date code

Thanks for quarantining, BB! Good luck with the storm--stay warm and dry--and before you lose power, switch out one of your Bonny ratchet pictures for the SO tie rod tool.

Today's small haul (Lugz 2020_60) might have one of my coolest finds of the year with the boy's tool kit box. See Pic 1.

It was empty. I put the other things (See Pic 2) in there for the ride home. A corked tin spout, Lufkin Mezurall, 1/2-inch sq dr adjustable valve lapper attachment (Indestro, I think), early CRAFTSMAN BE 13/16 (which I expected to be an NB CHROME ALLOY at first) socket, early satin base chrome wall SK 4V118 NOT GUARANTEED 9/16" socket, and a Plomb 5446 drag link bit. Oh, and the Billings "S" wrench that is tappet wrench style thin. I don't recall it registering with me before that tappet wrenches were ever made by anyone in "S" shape. That one may send me to the books.

Guessing 30's on the box. The bottom and top are fiberboard but the box itself is actually wood with fingerjoint corners. See pic 3 on my bench after I got it home.

Coincidence? Both Lugz and Outlaw just reached their 500th 2020GS posts. Unless the search function is wonky.
This is #344 for me...BB is at 111...OR at 230...Jeffmoss26 at 64...
The search seems to top out at 500 results, so it may not show posts beyond that. Ah, yes: 500 posts ago for Lugz was Feb20 and for Outlaw Jan10, and they each have posts prior to that, so search just doesn’t list anything past 500.

Sorry for the instrusion - just trying to get some leverage on the tools available for PotY screening.
DON’T FORGET to PM me with nominations.

I went to an estate sale yesterday, believe it or not, just to get this cup. Call me crazy but they don't make Aladdin 16 ouncers exactly like this anymore, and I like them. I was especially glad to find it's new! Not a sign of use on it.
...but I still slopped hand sanitizer on it as soon as I got it in the car, and ran it through the dishwasher as soon as I got home.

And, unknown to me until I hit the checkout, Saturday was half price day, so ... 50 cents!

In my defense, I do go to flea markets on an average of three days each week. So that's 150 posts right there. I also like to follow up the initial haul shot with cleaned up closeups in another post each trip, so I'm up to 300 already. And that's not counting commenting on other finds. But, 600? I need a ration meter with fines for exceeding a saner weekly limit! Haha.

At the opposite end of the pool, I count 101 members who posted only once this year.
Which statistic is more surprising?

That's awesome!!!

Honestly, I'm a little shocked, because other than the free stuff I get from work, and cleaning out my Dad's (formerly my grandparents') basement, I only went to ONE sale this year (ever, actually).

But apparently, I love watching you guys and cheering you on!

I've always felt I had a propensity to be a wall flower unless the subject under discussion truly interested me. I guess my self-assessment was accurate.

Here's me ringing up another post!

Final day at the pickers sale--they were pretty picked over--the layers were down to mostly just the crapola. Everyone including myself had been kicking this no-name cheapo tool box out of the way every day of the sale because it was filled with junk. I scooped out a couple of handfuls of rusty nails, screws and bent wire, threw in my meager finds and went off for a price check. $5.

06 Dec 20-1a.jpg

My meager finds included:
- Stanley marking gauge
- Six CM =v= metric sockets
- Fleet 3/8 3" extension and 1/2 to 3/8 adapter
- 3/8 Powrkraft universal
- Proto USA 5/8 deep socket
- Columbian Hardware Co. vise jaws
- and a BW cast handle

Once I got home and threw out the real junk that resided in the box, what was left was:
- Four Master Mechanic screwdrivers
- Delaware 1/2" star drill
- CM Crown chisel -- matches two I found there the other day.
- No-Name cold chisel
- Lectrolite DOE
- Delta Air Cargo box cutter
- and a Lufkin metal rule

The real find, of course was the pair of Columbian Hardware Co. pipe jaws. Looks like they fit a 5/8" screw shaft. According to Vintage Machinery, Col Hdw Co. was around from about 1905 to 1921 before ultimately changing to Columbian Vise and Manufacturing Co. about 1927.

06 Dec 20-1b.jpg06 Dec 20-1c.jpg

06 Dec 20-1d.jpg06 Dec 20-1e.jpg

I thought the cast handle might be for a vise swivel but I really don't know. The hex opening is not symmetrical and the underside has a small post sticking down. There are several casting marks starting with the BW inside a diamond outline. Immediately to the right is a hollow relief or possibly stamped 'A'. At the other end of the handle there appears to be a hollow relief oval but I cannot make out what it contains. On the flip side there is a hollow relief or stamped 'B' next to the small post and at the other end of the handle, under certain light, there appear to be barely discernible numbers-- I think I can make out 1232335--or I could be hallucinating. Either way, no meaningful patents are listed under that or variations of that number.

I welcome comments and enlightenment from the herd!

Here are a collection of hauls from the last few weeks.

First haul came from a place that had an arbor press listed on CL, but also a height adjustable GeekDesk. Been wanting one of those for the house, as both the GF and I are both 6'2", and normal craft furniture is too short for things like sewing, or other detail oriented tasks. They were a robotics shop, closing down, so everything was going. Kinda sad. They wanted $950 for the 2-1/2 ton press, which was way outside my budget. But I did pick up the desk, a monitor arm for the shop, and some metal from their scrap bin. I also picked up a 2-3/8" engineers wrench inexpensively. They also had a cool 60's vintage Hardinge lathe, some giant mill, and other goodies, none of which I had the $$, the space, or the skill to take home.

The next sale was a warehouse estate sale, from either a hoarder, or 6 diverse individuals. There was a space for a handyman, a clothes horse, a restaurant owner, and artist and a musician. And the cruft presented was as diverse. There was way too much stuff the first day, and it was layers deep. Not lasagna (someone else's analogy), but more like digging through a landfill, especially the tools. There was lots of crappy modern stuff, quite rusty. Then further down, better stuff, still quite rusty. It was also a little more crowded than I liked, as they paid the local church youth group to move all the stuff around, hustle stuff to cars, etc. Way too loud, way to many people, I grabbed the unused tub of paste wax, the MAPP can, and a box of Irwin bits, about $5 for all of them. The bits are in unused condition, the box is nice, except for a bit of rust on the black metal holding the bits. Grabbed a few other non-tool goodies too.

Another stop on the way home yielded the big blue tub for the GF to use for planting stuff.

IMAG4736-X2.jpg

Went back late today, and went back in to the tool room. A lot of the stuff had been moved, but not much was missing that I saw. Got to dig deeper, found some rusty SK and MasterXXXX wrenches, nice shiny one one side, horrid rust on the other. Found a few other goodies that I missed the first day.

Couple more tubs of wax to pass on to other friends, an interchangeable element soldering iron, Bonney LD16 1/2" Drive 1/2" Deep socket with the hole, SS scissors, giant Heller triangle file, Brasso bottle, two motion detection LED lights, an old hook, WD external hard drive, Starrett 50' tape in leather covered case, first 15' is rusty, a 1973ish Martin guitar magazine, a sharpening stone, and some old rusty needles, with one curved one which is why I bought them. And an easel for my daughter. Lots of other non tool goodies came home again today.

IMAG4738-X2.jpg

There was still a lot of stuff when we left 30 minutes prior to closing.

Interesting seeing all the stats. Thanks for sharing. I made the 100+ club....lol.

Here are the tools I inherited from my Grandfather. He is doing very good for his age at 90 years old. Still walking, talking, and has a good head on his shoulders. He is a war veteran and has some issues from that. Most notably his hearing and vision. He did develop diabetes a few years ago and moved into an assisted living facility(this year) in the veteran wing for the proper care he needs. He was mostly eating and drinking whatever he felt like at home so his diabetes was out of control and he is lucky to still be alive.

Lived various places before but over 40yrs in this house with Grandma. Nice workbench came with the house and the same vise is still mounted to it. Was just sad to see the vise was made in China. I didn't realize China was supplying us tools in the 70s. Mostly tools to take care of the house and yard. The wooden handled screwdrivers, wartime knife, and 10WR Vise grips were his. Most of the rest of the stuff was left behind in the shed in another property they bought over 20 years ago. When they sold that property a few years ago they bought them home. Don't think they used them.

The tools I put in the yellow tray were not USA(I didn't keep these). The tools on the table are all USA with a couple Taiwan exceptions. With the wrenches it's another case of one of two wrenches from a dozen different brands. I did put together a full 3/8 drive fractional socket set, Challenger, USA. Some 1/2" too.

The two most interesting to me are the Artisan (SK) Ratchet. And the geared plierench.

Thanks for watching :)

I hit a few sales over that last few days, no big single sale but a lot of misc.

A SpeedMaster and an early SK from a local flea; $8 alltogether.

An incomplete set of Penens for $.50 at the final day of an estate sale

A moving sale netted a Winchester ball pein and Stanley #2 and brace for $5

Another estate sale mostly had junk, but I managed to find this old file cabinet back in the barn.

And a trip back to the big estate sale from Wednesday yielded two incomplete socket sets, Atlas lathe manual and a weird doohickey for $4.

Its a good thing I like driving, 'cause you sure do a lot with this hobby.

From the only & probably last of the year yard/estate sale.
Was described as "in the barn" but the house was definitely "estate".
$27.00 for the lot:
6" stove pipe which I need 3 new ones for next season.
Stanley ax.
Nearly full bottles of Poison Ivy killer & generic glysophate. (50 acres always comes in handy) & good masking tape.
I always look for usable chemicals, rattle cans etc. folks just want it gone.
New Johnson stair gauge clamps
Set of Bonney 12pt flare nut wrenches.
(what a messed up USA Name. Utica, Bonney, The Triangle Corporation, Loc-Rite, .. Who's on first, What's on second?)
Taintor No 7 saw set
Pliers/hammer don't know what that is yet. Edit, now know is a "lasting pliers" Thanks to tail gunner & LesserSon
Ampco brass wedge
P. S. & W. Co. Cleveland wrench
American Casting/Philadelphia Electric Co, Jigger that looks like would be used to stamp shut those lead-do not remove clamp things on your electric meter.
Washburn DC Battery cell tester (had no idea, thought was a meat probe when i picked it up ha!)
Also in the lot:
Ridgid #2 strap wrench
Klein & Snap-on flat tips.
A good trip to end the year. ;)

So true, but the corporate/brand gobble-up is a constant in tool history. Forged Steel Products / Vacuumgrip / Snap-on / Blue-Point(s) Supreme / ATI / AutoCrib / Bahco / Blackhawk / CDI / Hoffman / Lindström / Mitchell1 / Norbar / Sturtevant Richmont / Williams, for instance.
Pliers/hammer don't know what that is yet.
That’s a cobblers’ tool.
Edit - I’m too slow - got caught up formatting!

They're called "lasting pliers."

They were designed for the shoemaker/cobbler trade, but are useful in general leatherworking as well.

Thanks guys. With that, I am now able to read R. Timmons & Sons.
My logo is struck off center, & of course rusty.

Wow, less than half of last year. In fact, my lowest since 2014. I guess the pandemic lockdown really kept me out of the hunt, and off of the thread.

Good luck in this phase of hosting duties, LS! Parsing posts for PotY proposals is positively peeving!
