Super sweet haul Rags. You certainly have an eye for the good and unusual stuff.

The ratchet kits look like the paper Proto box I posted up a while back.

I wouldn't mind seeing some close shots of the L handle. Does it look US made?

I looks pretty cheap to me, but I have never seen one myself so I had to have it for my 1/4 stuff I keep on my bench.

Overcast skies and 35MPH gusts kept most of the vendors away from the Double Early Bird today, but I did manage a very small haul (Lugz 2020_13), including a Long C (BE) deep socket, an odd Long C square-shank screwdriver that will require some paint removal and clean-up, a Herbrand VAN-CHROME M-5 1/4-inch drive ratchet from the late 40's. I never see Herbrand midget stuff - in fact, this may be the onliest piece I have, actually, so I was thrilled. And lastly two more of those For-A-Ford TM'd wrenches (with an OEM that has yet to be identified).

attachment.php

Also had a weird new experience with a seller who wouldn't tell me what was in a long green shallow steel box. It was in the bottom of one of four of five cardboard boxes he had out under a bunch of pliers and snips and the pieces of an incomplete puller set. Too shallow for sockets. Bushing set, maybe. Or a complete puller. Anyway, I asked what was in it and he said it's not for sale. I said okay but what is it. He said it doesn't matter, it's not for sale. I laughed, thinking he was pulling me leg, and said, no, really, what is it. And he said, I'm speaking English. I'm not going to tell you. I told him it was a weird thing to say and do over a simple curiosity and walked away. Maybe he didn't like me pawing through everything and not buying anything. There wasn't anything wrong with his prices. $3 for an Indestro 1/2-inch drive extension, for example. I just didn't need any of it, as I explained to him. I don't like the guy anyway, because he literally smells. HAHA. Dead serious. It's a combination of cigarettes, poor hygiene, and never washing his clothes. In the summer it's hard to look through his stuff sometimes.

Maybe that’s where he keeps his meth or crack reserved for his “special” customers and you didn’t fit the profile. :yikes:

I found someone on Craigslist who knew exactly what he had, so I ended up spending some real money, but here is what I got:

Starrett ratchet, a whole lot of Snap-on 9/32 drive pieces (incuded were a Plomb and a Bonney in that drive size) and a Craftsman socket tray. Not unhappy.

Boy that Starrett ratchet is clean. Odd to see them separate from the set. I'm Jealous!

I hit two sales today. I had tentative high hopes for the first one, but they were dashed by the lofty asking prices on the choice pieces. They did have a $70 Craftsman (Sears*Best) Floor Drill Press from 1973/4, but it looked like it had 20 years of rust on it and when they turned it on grit shot out of the belt housing. When I cracked to lid, about 10% of a squirrel's nest fell out--no squirrel, though. I told them it probably would be a good idea not to turn it on again.

I dug around and found the following:
A Hanson/Irwin Drill Extractor Set--Used Once
An Alden Extractor Set--Used Once (Maybe he couldn't find the Hanson when he needed it...)
Proto Professional 5436- 1-1/8" and 5434- 1-1/16" 6pt Sockets
A Proto 4916- 1/2" Crows Foot
S-K 40422- 11/16" and 45112 3/8" Sockets
A nice little oil can
A can of Marvel Mystery Oil--nearly full but no seal. Just bought it for the cool can, but maybe I'll put some in the little oil can.

$5 for the lot.

At the second stop I picked up a fairly nice North Brothers Yankee 130A ratcheting screwdriver for $6. I was really glad I passed on the beat up 130A at the first place since they wanted $6 for it, too. The Simple Green was $1.50 and the spool of fine wire was $0.75. The gimmicky multi-nut driver from Process Engineering Corp. (Patent Pending) was $0.75.

27 Feb 20-1.jpg

I really don't know much about Proto sockets. These look pretty new. There's a horizontal S under the name--Does that gives some indication of the manufacture date?

27 Feb 20-4.jpg

I picked up this funky nut driver because it is unusual, but I can't imagine going out of my way to use it. The spring loaded concentric sleeves accommodate four different size nuts--if you get it centered and lined up straight. The knurled portion of the barrel is free-spinning with no ratcheting feature, so you have to hold the tool by the barrel with one hand while the other hand twists, lets go of the handle, re-positions and twists again. Seems like a PITA to me and is something those "Process Engineers" really should have spent a little more time with on the drawing board.

Here is my Early Bird flea market haul (Lugz 2020_14).

attachment.php

The externally cantilevered box is a Duplex with the 1928 Coe patent number (1,675,484). I have a Snap-on version (they branded them as “HandiKits”) in the same size. Duplex made them for Snap-on, Old Forge, and others in the 30's and 40's before being bought out by Plomb in 1958. I’ve been looking for an early green Duplex for awhile, so I am thrilled.

The screwdrivers on top of the box include a Stanley Sweetheart No. 1001 PLUS ONE, a Bonney stubby, and an ink-stamped IRWIN “perfect handle” (WWII, scarce, and highly-sought by Jeepers.)

attachment.php

The other amber colored handle is an unmarked carb tool, I think, with a 6-point socket on one end and a jet installer/remover on the other.

Also on top is a utility ring (not vintage) and a Browne & Sharp center gauge.

In front of the box is a BELL SYSTEM “Light-Stick” flashlight and a “SEARS 1896-1936 Golden Jubilee” model hack saw frame with a Long C logo.

Dang, I have one of those from my grampa. I always thought it was an old distributor tool. Now I know a bit more about it.

I keep it around to remove split nuts on old saws. Haven't worked on a carb in 30+ years

You could be right. I'm only guessing because of the end resembles the special sockets I know are for servicing carb jets. Is yours marked? I have to soak this one in Simple Green to see if it's marked. I'll post some better pics later. Maybe someone else will know for sure.

Local estate sale.
The 2 big ones are Hargrave and have a 5 inch clamping capacity. $3 each

The smaller ones need some clean up to see ID markings but I suspect they are from a different manufacturer.

No markings seen so far. I was gonna take pix of mine a week or three ago to ask here if anyone knew who or what it was, but got sidetracked (by rusty probably)

I was also only guessing.

RTM, et al,

Here is the tool. No markings of any kind. I've got a very similar one around here somewhere that has the 6-point socket embedded in the **** end of the handle, and the pronged bit on the end of a flex extension on the other end.

This was a FB Marketplace score. I've been looking for a Monarch 10ee for a LONG time. An ad pops up - Monarch 10ee "Chucker" lathe. Well, i know that Monarch didn't make many chucker lathes (10ec). Those are very rare. So i contacted the seller and he says, yes, it's a real 10ee, but it has the collet chuck on there, so he's listing it as a "Chucker."

I basically bought this sight unseen. There was one picture in the ad, and it just showed the tailstock end. I say, can i pay for it now and pick it up in a week? I was taking a chance on this 70 year old iron. He says no problem. i Paypal him $1200, and pray he takes down the ad or marks it as "sold".

Fast forward one week and I rent a trailer and make the 4 hour trip to Kilgore, TX from my house in Lake Jackson. I get there and it's everything I had hoped for and more. He starts pulling out lathe gear and i think i'm in another dimension:

  • Steady rest (typicaly $500 on eBay)
  • 8" 3 jaw chuck (D1-3 back, around $200)
  • 30 authentic Hardinge 2J collets (with the collet chuck about $1,000)
  • Extra tool holders to go with the quick change tool post
  • 11" faceplate ($100-$200)
  • Taper attachment ($1,000)

As we were loading it up he told me that someone offered him 2 times the money ($2,400) literally an hour after i had paid. Really decent guy to still honor the deal.

My Ex-cel engine hoist handled that load with ease (3,300 lbs). I can move it around with my pallet jack. It's a project, but hey, i'm almost retired. The eBay, FB Marketplace, Craigslist gods smiled upon me once again. Read it and weep my garage journal homies!!

Best part of the story right there. After always having to hear about the ghastliest wickedest **** people do to each other, it's always good to be reminded that there is still plenty of good out there - the media just has no stake in reporting it!

He was such a good man. He had two helpers with him and they set that lathe right between the axles. He told me that he bought an entire machine shop for $15k and the little Monarch wasn't big enough for anything he was doing. A very enjoyable trip through the heart of TX. That machine basically completes my shop.

Lugz,

This is so true, but I still like to think that our country is filled with good people like this seller. My place in the country in Southern Maryland is like Mayberry and filled with folks like this which is a big blessing.

We weren’t able to get out this morning since we had our granddaughter here for her first overnight away from Mom and Dad, who took in a Warriors game as part of a date night. There was a sale pretty close to home so we checked it out before it closed. It was pretty picked over but we found a Thorsen 1/4 “ drive socket set and some punches that were probably Barcalo. The rivet set is Pexto, the dykes are Diamalloy and the punches in the last picture are Mayhew.

Nice old clamps. Was that the sale in EC that started at 10:00? That’s the one we went to late.

Thanks!
Yes, That’s where I figured you were when I saw your pile. The house was only 2 miles from me. There were probably 40 punches, nail sets, etc. in a cardboard box when I finally was granted admission. Tempting but no sale. Those punches probably bear my fingerprints. :)

I got there about 10:30, half an hour after opening bell, and there was a line of about 25 people. Fortunately there was a guy I know standing halfway to the front so I edged in and chatted hoping others would assume he was holding a place for me. It worked.
No vises so I settled for a handful of vintage clamps. I’ll probably sell the Hargraves.

Wow, Lots of cool finds happening! NOTHING for sales here, I took delivery on a shipped lantern Fount (tank) that will go on one of my franken lanterns, (its 4th different fount...) that I bought from a guy on the Coleman forum (been looking for this fount for 2 years...)

Lugz GREAT scores on the hacksaw and box!

That 2 ended tool I don't believe is for a carb however? I've bought those new and the spanner end is for the bezels on old school dashboards, you take the knob off and the tool slides over the control knob, and the tips engage the split slot on the bezel nut. One I have has 2 different sizes. Ford used those through the 50's and into the 60's

Some other companies may have used both the split slot and hex (maybe for switches?)

CMC, GREAT score on the Monarch and tooling!

d42 that rivet setter is WELL used!

Shift, nice find on the wing clamps!

I find lots of stuff garage sailing, just not so many tools. Hope you don't mind me posting here.

This is the bottom of a box with an angled lid. The lid has breadboard ends, the box has flat dovetailed corners. The bottom is nailed in place.

Could this be a retail sales display? The top is short of the box allowing you to slip your fingers in to open it. If the bottom was facing the customer and the top opened to show the inventory of dyes.

For those who only want to see tools, this is for you.

Same flat dovetails even has a metal turn latch.

The Pexto rivet set looks better now as do the Barcalo punches and chisel.

Your unusual finds are a fixture on this thread, dfa! Few and far between, but always interesting.

RTM, et al,

Here is the tool. No markings of any kind. I've got a very similar one around here somewhere that has the 6-point socket embedded in the **** end of the handle, and the pronged bit on the end of a flex extension on the other end.

Well I now think RTM was on the right track for that particular tool...

Here is a pic of mine, the yellow handle has the bits from the one I bought new from a buddy (RIP Preston) of mine that sold parts for 53-59 Ford PUs, if I recall the Year span right (F-100 parts unlimited was the shop name.)

The original blue colored handle finally disintegrated, and I used a handle from a dead screw driver, to replace - Ironically I think it was an Xcelite!
In any case, the "newer to me" blue handled driver is Xcelite, and is Marked for purpose!

My old one was purpose made for bezel nuts as I described. the other one is clearly marked for Dist, use. BOTH have the exact same smaller end...
