I attended two estate sales today. The first was active 15 minutes before the scheduled opening time, when I arrived. I bought the items in Photo #1:

Model T Ford T-1349 Hubcap wrench.
P&C P6235 1/2d hinge handle. "100"
Craftsman ratcheting screwdriver
Craftsman =V= 3/8d 3/4 swivel socket
Long-C 3/8d 3" and 6" extensions, circle-H
Craftsman =V= 19/32 x 25/32 DBE
Craftsman -V- 44975 1/2d ratchet

Photo #2: The makers mark on the T-1349

The rest of the photos are from the second estate sale. I got there about a half hour before scheduled opening, and about 15 people were already in line. Most of the tools were in the stainless baking pan already. I added a couple of more that were around loose. The house had a few tools set out on tables, but the shop was a mess, and everyone was digging through piles that apparently had not been touched before the sale opened.

Photo #3:
Ford wrench - 1926 or later
Armstrong 67-881 battery pliers
Vlchek #92 DOE tappet wrench 1/2 x 9/16
Thorsen Combos:
#2024 3/4"
#2020 5/8"
#2016 1/2"
#2012 3/8"
Scholler 6" Adjustable, made in Buffalo. Early, thick head wrench.
Snap-On metric combos:
OEXM-12
OEXM-13

Photo #4:
"MFD USA" DOE wrenches: 3/4 x 5/8 and 3/8 x 7/16. Unplated, WWII?
"Mfd USA" DOE wrench: 11/16 x 3/4, plated
"Forged in USA" DOE wrench: 19/32 x 5/8, plated

Photo #5:
Flip side of wrenches in photo #4.

Photo #6:
The stainless baking pan that contains most of the items I found
The rest of the contents:
Misc. foreign wrenches
Japan stamped DOE set, 1/2 to 3/4
Yamaha DOE wrenches, 9 x 10 and 14 x 17
Chain saw wrench/screwdriver (you can never have enough of these!)
Spark plug gapper

Does anyone know who made the Model T wrench with the triangle logo?

Outlawmws, thanks for clearing that up, I have wondered about it for 40+ years since I got it from Grampa’s tool box.

Good luck this weekend, gents. There's noting within striking distance from my little patch, so I'll be staying home to finish other projects.

SWMBO and I are talking about doing a big purge as part of the upcoming town-wide yardsale in April. I've got a big pile of tools acquired and posted on these garage sale threads over the last several years that somehow never make it on to Ebay. I've got other large items cluttering up the walkways of my two garages, and work benches who's tops I haven't seen in years. It's long past the time to clean house and move some of these treasures on to other enthusiasts. The BlueBomber Working Museum of DBEs will stay, but my many extras, duplicates and other random wrenches will hopefully find some buyers.

Does that mean I'll stop looking for treasures at sales? Don't be silly. I just need to clear out my excess inventory to make room for new stuff!

I hit an estate sale early and picked up some shooting accessories and ammunition but also found this grinder for $32.

It cleaned up nice and once the grinding wheel was trued and a flange added it has only the normal block grinder vibration. I also repainted it while I was at it.

I think I hit the two sales that Provincial mentioned right after him, picking up the following:

Pricing for sockets was fairly outragous ($2 per), but I did manage to squeez a deal out, getting an Easco 3/4 socket and 1/2" adaptor (they really didn't know anything about tools) and they had a set of Proto/Snap-on impacts marked as a group. The surprise was when I dug the Hohner harp out of that mess of a shop, and they only charged me a buck for it! Made between '24 and '37, in box. That funny, shiny thing in the back is a Kerf Klamp, used for rip cuts to keep the wood from warping in the cut.

Yes, that shop behind the one estate sale was something out of a hoarder reality show. No attempt to even pull things out of the pile and lay it out in view!

The more organized sale was sort of a graveyard for Craftsman V hinge handles (breaker bars) and the sockets were sort of overwhelming to sort through. I may go back on Sunday after the Flea Market and see if they get realistic on pricing.

Slim pickings for stops and for what they had (and no excuses, its PERFECT weather...):

A couple of bucks for the roll up alum Camp table. Needs a good cleaning but it's all there except for a couple of the slat end caps.

attachment.php

And one of my regulars: He's gotten so old he only does his home sales, maybe once a month. He used to take it all to a HS Flea as well. Always gives me good deals. Ten for all this:

Sockets in clude a Blackhawk, Cornwell 3/4-1/2 adapter, 2 Indestro, 2 SK Wayne and a Krauter. the DBE is a None Better, a NOS Bimetsal hole saw in 1-1/4, Krauter duckbills, no name compound crimpers for a hex crimp (Cable TV connectors maybe? :dunno: ) And two oddballs:

The red handled "breaker" (3/8 Driver) has storage in the handle and what looks to be a pipe thread cap needed but is between 3/4 and 1" pipe? VERY faint markings (only seen with the right reflection) has:

Standard Precision" Pat Pend, No 100, and what MAY be "Jenkins" (I'm sure of "Jenk"...)

The other silver and black thing is really odd, it has a non-compressible spring inside (seriously strong...), and appears to be a hand operated press for some special use? Google got me: "front servo adjusting gauge (AH-11) NBM co." and its marked GM" so.. (has "5 turns" factory marked on it)

It's a "Hallowell" from Standard Pressed Steel, Jenkintown, PA. I have a couple. We have a thread for them on VB. May not be in sticky yet. But search will turn it up.

Paid 12.- for the lot.
Callipers are dickered. Thought the battery was just empty. Happy with the dolly, it’s a Peddinghaus.

So there was a local ES with a metric ton of high end audio equipment for sale and some tools. I forwarded the link to my son and he wanted to go so we did an unusual thing for us and arrived early and got on the waiting list.

We were #6 and #7 on the list so we were in the first group of 10 to enter the house. I did a quick pass through the house and saw nothing I needed. My son was shopping away so I looked around again.

I noticed a wheeled audio rack in the living room (where else would it be?) and eyed up all the equipment on it. It was a 42U network/audio rack - 18" deep with a ton of shelves for $100. I showed my son and he said yes - SOLD!

My son bought a bunch of computer stuff that he can flip and pay for the rack several times over. I found a milk crate full of flashlights and picked out a Cree light that the ES guy thru in for free with my son's pile.

Later we went back for the rack in the van and my son picked up a few more things. I found a 6" 'Wards Master Quality' adjustable wrench that again the ES guy thru in for free with my sons pile. We loaded the rack into the van and headed for home.

Cheers

Jim

Got up WAaaaayyyyy early to get a number for a nearby sale. 18! oh, well. Went back at opening time, practically deserted! I guess I was the last interested guy. Odd because there were TONS of ancient iron I would have loved to have sitting around our place (yes, SWMBO loves it too) but self restraint kicked in. I walked away with this, with the sale managers begging me (or anyone!) to take it for free! The damage looked MUCH worse than it was, so now evilBay will sort out how much it's actually worth. Maybe it cost me gas money...

Estate sale this morning only 20 mins away. Originally saw the Snap-on Ratchet in their pic and what I thought was a Cman breaker bar. But the breaker bar turned out to be a really nice 1/2dr long handle flex-head ratchet! Small handful of Snap-on and Cman sockets, along with a couple of SKs and a 1/4dr SK ratchet. The squares are Brown & Sharp. The odd little vise I grabbed off the work bench has some repair welding, but done really well. The Snap-on & SK ratchets are soaking in trans fluid right now. The 1/4 SK & 1/2 Cman just need a light lube but the Snap-on needs a good dissemble and cleaning.

The other day I posted about the estate sale that had a 1973/4 Sears Best Craftsman floor drill press for $70—complete with 20 years of rust and an old squirrel’s nest in the drive head. See photos. With some trepidation, I returned to see if it was still there on the final day, knowing that if it was, I would have to enter into serious negotiations in an attempt to procure it well south of the $35 half-off price. As I mentioned, I don’t have room for it in my garage and I have a **** load of higher priority projects so it would just be in my way while it continued to rust. So, when I arrived, I was more than a little relieved to see that someone else had taken on the responsibility for the restoration project. The DP had apparently sold first thing this morning for 50% of the original price=$35.

Here are a couple of shots:

28 Feb 20-2.jpg28 Feb 20-3.jpg

Keep in mind; about half of the contents of the nest had already fallen out.

29 Feb 20-1.jpg

The only things I picked up today were the ½” finger ratchet (China) and the Kobalt carpenter’s pencil sharpener. $0.50 total.

28 Feb 20-1.jpg

Yesterday I found:

Crescent 73 Scratch Awl
Husky 1/2" Offset Screwdriver
Brass Automatic Center Punch (Taiwan) probably HF.
Mill-Rose Twisted Wire Brush
12" QuickGrip Bar Clamp

$7.50 for the lot.

Rickster,

What is the date code on the Snap on ratchet? It looks to be a late 40's era. I have a 1946 version which has the smoothest motion of any of my Snap on ratchets, it is my go to ratchet before my much more modern versions. Definitely worth the time to clean it up.

Yesterday after striking out at a few sales, we hit pay dirt at a sale clearing out an incredibly messy shop in Alamo, CA. None of the tools were like new but many were quite early. Among the brands of tools were Plomb, Thorsen, S-K, Herbrand, Barcalo, Blue Point and Craftsman.
We checked out another small estate sale since it was on the way and close to home and found the tools in the last picture.

I hit a handful of sales yesterday, making some interesting finds:

Picked up the PalmGrip ratchet (and some books) at the first stop for $2.50 total, the next stop yeilded the Stanley block plane and vintage square of a type I have never seen before, costing $5 together. And for another $7 I picked up the Craftsman tack hammer, Solingen scissors and a (not shown) metric hex key set that went straight into the truck as I just realized the other day that I needed on. Oh, and here are the books. I already had the two McPhee's, but they make good trade and I couldn't leave them behind.

What a coincidence, Beemer. I just recommended "Irons in the Fire" to Lardy1. I had recommended "Looking for a Ship" awhile back and he liked it, so I gave him another. One of my favorites. Nobody else can write about modern horse thiefs, forensic soil analysis, the country's biggest auto auction, a tire dump, Plymouth rock, or a virgin forest in New Jersey and make it read like stirring fiction, about people. That's the trick with McPhee. No matter the subject, it's always about interesting people.

Yes, I have all but a couple of McPhee's earliest books in hardcover; survival of the bark canoe, curve of binding energy, oranges, and so on. My mothers cousin is actually mentioned in Encounters with the Archdruid! (he fired Brower)

Todays fleamarket finds were four combinations, a Lectrolite SK 1/2", no name 9/16" , Canadian made Proto Challenger 5/8" and a Japanese made ETC Industrial 1"(for the truck tool box). The 1/2" and 9/16" were for the rock club's tool kit. I also picked up four clamps, two Fuller 2", these are not too crude, made in Japan, a Brinks and Cotton 2" and a 1 1/2" Adjustable for them. These will be used for clamping the fret work sawing blocks, in cutting silver for jewelry silversmithing. And my prize ,a Gray Chrome Vanadium open end wrench 1"x 15/16". A well spent $15

This was from last day of an estate sale on sat where all tools were $1 or less.
There wasn't much to begin with and not much left but was glad to grab this what I thought was a Bicycle wrench. I looked up the wrench and found they made wrenches for Harley and after some steel wool uncovered the stamp. Wound up paying 50 cents for it.
