I work at a federal organization and we've implemented highly encouraged telework. Other locations have made it mandatory. I have no intention of going to an estate sale this weekend. It helps that there aren't any good ones nearby.

My second job is part time at the VA and it's been disjointed messaging to say the least. I'll be showing up for my clinic tomorrow.

Looking for a padlock collection? I'm going tomorrow if I can talk the wife into it.

On craigslist at 22031 S SCHIEFFER RD Colton Oregon.
NICE. If you find any vintage Ford or Chevy ones going for a song, I'm in. :)

In it's operational position the telescoping wand would hang vertically from the horizontally held handle. The wand is partially retracted for the photo. It extends to 24.5 inches. And it comes with a belt loop carrying case for easy access. I've put a bit of paper towel on it to mask the name.

#1 I think- valve adjuster, looks functionally similar to the one I had for my '56 Chevy 235 straight six. (oops, I see Rusty beat me to that guess)

#3 dowsing rod. No matter how many rigorous tests prove they don't work, the believers still believe. One variety was even marketed as being able to find lost golf balls!! I bought one NIB for 50cents, sold it AS A CURIOSITY on eBay for $7.50. P.T. Barnum was right.

On the other side of the table, I have sold 2 pieces of cast iron and a Cub Cadet this week.
So... glad to take the money but, this morning I am thinking I didnt wash my hands or the money. May need to put it out in the sun for a little UV time!

And I'm thinking about this Sat. Wear gloves to handle the money, keep the new bills separate... **** !

Sat yard sales is my primary stress reliever, hate to miss them. But, I am am over 60 and have respiratory issues so I am WFH for the next month at least.
Got to be smart about the exposure until we are in the other side of the bell curve.

Everyone stay safe! (didnt mean to drag this thread down!)

#3 dowsing rod.

For locating underground pipes

OR:
So they’re both right! A Magnetomatic. You should take that to Oak Island.
It looks exactly like a VHF antenna mounted into a handlebar grip. Does it seem to float freely inside the handle via ring magnets, or ride on bearings?
Whatever you do, don’t mess with the screw in the ****, or you’ll void the warranty. Although, without the original receipt, I suppose you can’t return it within 30 days anyway.

As someone whose life literally revolves around flea markets (three days out of every week...), trust me when I say I feel everyone's pain! But it's just not worth it.

On the other hand, as we all hunker down with nothing new to show, but continue to check in, it's nice to see the clever jokes like 3bay's and this one...

So you're going into money laundering to pass the time?
...on the rise!

Valve lash adjusting wrench is what I was thinking when I saw it but I’m not sure.

Rusty65 and BFBOB are close on #1--but no cigar.

TOTO and then BFBOB are correct on #3.
It's marketed as the "Magnetomatic" by the Dixie Precision Mfg. Co., under patent 215,618. Not being a patent sleuth, I'm a little confused about all the different things patented under this number (including an Improvement in Sleeping Car Berths granted in 1879) and all the cross referencing to different patent numbers for essentially the same patent. Maybe a bored self-isolationist could expound on it.

To Bob's scoffing point that they don't work, well mister, the company is forthright in saying that "Skill is required to use the instrument, but operation is relatively easy to master if the recommended instructions and practices are followed. Easy-to-follow instructions are included with each unit. MUST READ INSTRUCTIONS." So maybe some of us just don't have the skill or the 4th grade education to enable us to read the instructions!:lol_hitti

The good news is this magical product is still available on Amazon for the low, low price of $48.99--but wait!--you can get the same product with a free case from the same company for only $54.50! Hurry! Only 7 left in stock!

And what about #2? No guesses? Maybe some of the Gen-X'ers should chime in--it was patented on 1977.

I want to say #2 is some kind of early skateboard multitool. I was never into that, though, so I don’t really know.
Edit - A-ha, yes I do! “Elephant” brand Albert J. Hess 1Mar1977 design patent D243506.
There’s one on eBay for $25 right now, with patent pending stamp.

That WLW bronze anvil is a good puzzle. I found a token page (sadly, with no photo) that may suggest WLW was a mercantile establishment of some sort.

A couple of weeks back, I scored this stuck ratchet for $10
Gee...I wonder why it wasn’t working properly??
I had to drill out one of the screws. The stub came out with vise grips.

Older model Snap On S80

Yesterday’s mail brought this. Free from S.O.

Once I install this kit, I’ll have a good as new half inch dual 80 ratchet. I can trade that for an old vise. :)

And thanks for the vector on the anvil--I'll have to look into it.

We're still looking for the definitive answer on #1 (I had people clamoring for it on eBay, at my apparently-too-low price, so it's a know item)

I couldn't find any info on a W.L. Wells, Grocer or Grocery in Hattiesburg.

I've been looking at my little anvil under my scanning electron microscope ;) and it looks like the "L" may be an "I". At least if it is meant to be an "L" it was made with two strikes of the "I" die. Maybe the guy didn't have an "L" or maybe he just liked to use the "I" as much as possible--he double-struck the "I" in MISS. Or, maybe he didn't have a "L" and his "I" was wonky to the point he never know how it would look until he hit it! Or maybe it was his other eye that was wonky! :wtf:

For grins I checked if any sales were even being posted. None in my usual area.

I wondered about the larger areas and there were 7 listed, and I cannot imagine anyone going... But now there are nine? :wtf:

I moderate our local Freecycle, and I put that on a Moratorium on Tuesday... Only two people didn't quite get the message so far...

I believe the bronze anvil is a watchmaker's tool. Their tools must be antimagnetic or constantly demagnetized.

The week of Jan 22 was slow because of the wet and cold, but $3 got me these:
Utility knife for Clark Wire to add to the collection, a buff for the drill, and what appears to be a fairly early 6 inch Ridgid pipe wrench with a patent date and the remains of an original decal.

I'm thinking a jeweler's or watchmaker's anvil. Would explain the small size and softer metal. The markings could be the owner's initials?

I just checked listings near me: 1 sale, with strict instructions that they're only letting 10 people in at a time. No thanks; I'll stick to the 'bay and the GJ Classifieds.

The pipe wrench was made between 1937 and 1948. If you can see the numbers on the movable jaw, the last number indicates the year. This one was made in 1943.

BX22 has correctly identified the function of tool #1! Congratulations!

It's a Delavan Oil Burner Nozzle Changing Wrench!

OilBurnerWrench1.jpgOilBurnerWrench6.jpgOilBurnerWrench5.jpg

Selling this beauty on eBay more than paid for the entire tool box full of tools it came in that I posted just over a week and 143 posts ago (#1326).

Thanks everyone for playing! You're all a bunch of fart smellers!:bowdown::bowdown:

You guys are making a big deal out of that single table of locks, but I’ve stood on the Pont des Arts in Paris. Now that’s a lot of locks! If you had a really big collection, you could do worse for a display than a section of hurricane fence on a wall.

So, I stopped at a couple sales, one of which was a rehash of one I had gone to a few weeks ago. They moved it across the street to a larger building, but still had the same ****. I hit a TOO where I picked up some small flush cutters for a few bucks, but left them in my truck. Tried to find another one, but the directions were bad so I skipped (saw they revised the ad later, listing deep discounts alread. I doesn't help when no one can find it...) But for the most part today was a bust. So I went up into the hills to go shooting.

Like many others, I can’t find any traditional GS listings in my town for this weekend. A couple are listed but “by appointment only”. I wonder if a regular GS would be forcibly shut down? Shelter in place for not only the Bay Area but ALL of CA. And many other states.

There is a display of padlocks hanging (illegally) on the Brooklyn Bridge. I walked across last fall. I found this pic online. When I was there it wasn’t this thick. There are signs threatening a $100 fine for attaching a lock to the bridge.

I would expect a police officer to tell them to put their stuff away and take their signs down.

It started raining again around here (a day early) So even the one I saw pop up this AM is likely dead for both reasons...

Back to the locks, while I'm sure there are many examples of larger displays, you have to admit for a yard, Garage or estate sale, that's a lot!

Something I missed showing last week when posted was this Aluminum version of a nested driver. I have LOTS of these in brass, but this is the first one I've seen in Aluminum in the flesh. I'm wondering if this one was made during WWII, or was an import? ZERO markings..

The biggest two bits need dressing down but that's easy...

I did pick up one thing of interest at a used bookstore the other day:

Not a reprint, but an actual 1922 set of shop notes. Very interesting and actually quite helpful.
