I saw a sale listed on Craigslist in Stateline, NV so we thought we would do a drive by. There were no other customers so we checked it out and invested $2.00 in some rusty treasures.

I posted cleaned-up close-ups of those Bell-System brace bits on the 'Show your Bell System' thread, linked here, of that Weyersberg (Made in Germany) DOE wrench set and holder in the 'Show your DOEs' thread, linked here, and of that "Peoria Rubber & Mfg" factory wrench (which a little researched revealed to be from the 1890's!) in the 'Show your Combo wrenches' thread linked here.

I saw an 11pc Husky USA SAE wrenches 3/8-1" for $20 on FB Market. I said I liked old USA tools and the seller followed up with tables of stuff. I ended up spending $80 for the lot below; probably still at least 2/3 below ebay prices.

I've never owned ratchets like three of these: The Vogel Double Duty, the Indestro and the Socketool. The craftsman sockets are all -V- and all like new. The craftsman double open end wrenches are all =V=. The metal SK box is a mix of things, mostly SK.

Any Idea when the Husky wrenches are from? On ebay I see newer all polished ones, and way older ones. Oh, the cloth wrench holder was hand sewn by the previous owner's wife. Very nice.

How do you like that paint can opener? Can you find it? :)

You did well. The Vogel ratchets are hard to find. I think came in 3 or 4 variants on stampings. The craftsman wrenches with original clip will grab some attention.

Looking for a Plomb 3061 Pebble Open End.

Yeah those Vogels are rare, but junk; if you decide you don't need junk, let me know, cause I happen to like that particular junk...

I've never see the ratchet driver in an actual; case. THAT'S rare! I have 6 or 8 of them, but none with a case!

If its not smooth, hit it with a few drops of MMO, and you will be amazed how smooth they are.

Thanks Olson.

Outlawmws why are the Vogels junk? Break easy i guess? I would guess they didn't take off because when you need a 3/8" it's often for the smaller size and this double has to be the size of the bigger 1/2".

RTM. I will scan it in. Too late tonight. All in one shares a wall with my sleeping daughter.

What I have found about the Husky wrenches:
1. "Original Home Depot Husky wrenches, probably made by Easco. Mid-90's."
2. Generally seem to equal Craftsman RP wrenches from the same time although not worth as much.
3. The Stanley Works acquired the Husky brand with its acquisition in 1986 of National Hand Tool.[6][7] In October 1992, Stanley began supplying the Husky brand exclusively to The Home Depot,[8] and sometime later transferred the rights to the name to Home Depot.[1]

What value do you think the Husky wrenches have? On ebay someone has sold and listed again a Husky Pro full polish set for $100 plus ship. Got to love ebay!

others may appreciate you scanning and posting the literature with it.

I know I would.
I have two sets. One was my grandfather’s. For some reason, I associate it with the Ford Thunderbird he had in the seventies. The other was probably in a box lot I bought in the past couple years. I’m not even sure what actually goes in the sets.
The black-handled one is stamped “Made in USA” and “Patent Pending.” Hex female drive.
The red-handled one is stamped “US Patent Number” and gives the number, not actually claiming it is made in USA. Star female drive. I think that one was my grandfather’s, because I remember the lid being broken, and now it is gone. Or else, I’ve swapped them sometime and lost track. I saw one in an antiques store a while back, I think it may have had a beige base. It was not expensive, but I convinced myself I didn’t need another possibly-broken set with no instructions.

LS I could swear I have or had one of those spanner allens in those sets. Any clue what it was for?

b.well, does your set have it? Is it referenced in the instructions?

I think one of mine is the Star drive a couple have the "Swiss Army Knife" setup, and the rest are the 1/4" hex drive.

I don’t know. I’m not even sure if they really go with the sets. And yet, I have some dim childhood memory of seeing it used - I just can’t recall on what.

Here are three I could find quickly. Th one with the folding blades is marked "Versatool" I have another one of those in the Coleman repair kit, I should replace it with one of the hex drives and some bits...

The Vogel ratchets have a distinct problem with being a long handle ratchet in 3/8's size, but the 1/2 head will let you put a lot of leverage on large sockets. Which means that the broken gear tooth is a real problem. I have two of them and one has the broken gear.

Yard sale season has opened & the last 2 days yielded these.
I like this body hammer.
I was not familiar with the name Peddinghaus, the seller said that when he was in shop class in the 70's it was a well recognized name.
Stamped W Germany, so that helps to date it a bit. On the other side it is stamped 171.
I have seen that on other body hammers. Anybody know what that refers to?
2 Metal Craftsman wall trays. Am told store display. (with unfortunate paint spatter).
1950's logo correct?
And disappointing for me the Stanley 65. It was in a bucket in a crowded garage & thought i knew what I was looking at.
When I got back to the car I saw the wood chip & the brass strap is missing.....
Can't win them all.

Nice craftsman trays. The left one is DOEs and the right one is for DBEs. The would house craftsman =V= wrenches which 50s sound correct but not 100%

Amazing Shelton Socketool instructions attached! Pretty clever I think. Enjoy :)

3jakes: i have a set of =v= dbes that would love that metal wall tray if you are interested in letting it go PM me :)

Outlawmws: Funny Man!!! Yes, although short and sweet I believe all is explained in the instructions.

Lesserson: Looks like you have all your Scoketool sockets. I am missing one or two. What are the chances I'd find the missing ones anywhere?

Quick morning trip to Jakes. Vendor attendance was low, perhaps as I overheard because of some big once-a-year venue drawing them away. IDK.
There seemed to be a convention of non-accredited misanthropists, sociologists, phrenologists, misogynists, historical revisionists, political evangelists, quack pandemiologists and other nattering nabobs of negativity. One freelance scholar sidled up to me while I was pawing through a box of tools and named each one (with about 50% accuracy) as I tried to make out the branding under the rust. I guess he really thought I didn’t know a hawk from a handsaw, even with the southerly wind we have today. “Oh, a screwdriver you say? What’s it do?“ Thanks, Captain Obvious.
One regret was not getting picture of a stack of 8 or 10 old Navy mechanical training manuals. I think the vendor‘s dad had been a welder, and apparently learned a lot more while in the service. I blame Cap for distracting me from thinking of it.
i almost got away from Jakes without shedding any bills, but a peek through an open toolbox revealed a TuHex 182 DBE. Guy was bitching so hard about how his ex won’t take hime back (guess he’s a marriage counselor), he almost didn’t notice me. I got his attention long enough to pay a buck for it. If there would have been space, I’d have liked to dump out the contents. There was a dozen or so 1/2dr Hinsdale sockets and untold other tools lurking deeper.
Then at a short stop at a smaller flea I traded another buck for a 1735 CV DOE.
Call me a ****-eyed optometrist, but I think tomorrow will be another day.

I don’t think they’re super-rare, but spotting orphans amid the crowds of hex keys and similar multitool tips they’ve probably been heaped with won’t be easy. One thing, the finish is fairly distinctive compared to the more dominant black oxides.

I THINK I read somewhere that these Husky wrenches were made by New Britain - makes sense because they're a dead ringer for the NB-made Penncraft combo wrenches, of which I have many.

...but not a 16 or 18mm... anyone have a couple they'd like to part with?

My first estate sale since the pandemic lockdown started to lift here in Mass. This one was out in the country, and after 11am on the second day (half price time). The crowd was low, and all wearing masks, so I felt reasonably safe.

This was an old family estate. Lots of outbuilding in disrepair, as well as a motley collection of old Ford 8N tractors and Model T/A carcasses rotting away in the brush. I braved the rickety main barn and came away with the following treasures for $25:

Four super-long auger bits--the smallest is 1/2" x 12" and the longest is 11/16" x 36"! These can be really handy if you've got a drill strong enough to spin them.

Pick-ax and double ax handles, both old but in good condition. The ax handle was never hafted to an ax head.

5' length of 2" steel pipe, because you never know when you need to extend the handle of a pipe wrench or breaker bar...

Two No 41 Indestro Chicago DOEs, 1-7/6" x 1-5/8" Normally I leave DOEs behind, but these two were huge, magnificent examples of the distinctive Indestro design--I had to have them.

Gedore 11mm x 13mm offset DBE

Snap-On P340 1-1/16" 6-pt 1/2" socket, 1955 date code

Unity Mfg Co auto spotlight w/rearview mirror

Belsaw 1080 1" x 44" belt sander, w/ one mangled but fixable leg. 1/4 hp Dayton motor needs a little cord repair but it fires right up.

The Snappy socket and spotlight will get flipped and more than cover my costs.

$300 installed for one of those spotlights. We used to do them for abnormal police cars at the shop I used to work at all the time (by abnormal mean not a Crown Vic, as they came with spots) And the reason they are so expensive is that you need to drill through the A pillar, which is a very expensive mistake when it happens.

Snagged a few vintage things from the thrift stores this morning. Yard sales were few and far between, and most of those had only clothes and HHC (Household ****). One item I found was a 10" SCHOLLER adjustable wrench, circa 1950. Its a beast! Very heavy for its size and has an unusual square adjusting rack gear. Most I have seen are round. I also found a 1960s Craftsman crowntop lock, which will go nicely on the crowntop toolbox. An old box of upholstery tacks caught my eye at 50 cents, and a stack of circa 1950 emery polishing paper in the old 4/0, 3/0 grit sizes went for $2. My abrasives kit is now full again!

Nice subdivision garage sale this morning. I picked up this box of old-school Craftsman socket sets along with a Williams 1/2dr Superratchet.

A busy couple days. I went to a few sales on Thursday, but none were as promising as they sounded. Which was the story of today, but with the caveat that the unpromising ones were often really good. I hit three GS's that were pretty much zero's, but an estate sale I went to months ago was having a final day and I went mostly as I was already in the neighborhood turned out great! Also hit a thrift store for books, a used tool shop, a Restore, and an old guy who had a fix-it shop for 50+ years and is getting rid of stuff, and he has a lot, so I stop by every now and then. Anyway, here is what I got:

Books are a '40s travel memoir of Brazil, '39 Catapiller catalog, and a '50s Briggs and stratton guide.

Misc. sockets (Williams, Proto impact, Billings, etc.) Blue Point screw extractor set, vintage lamp, Thorsen 7mm combo, a DBE I am not familar with, Stanley 101, Armstrong service wrench, Life-Time ratchet (clearly SK made), Bell System E splicing sheath, Vlcheck Par-X and Fairmont wrenches.

three metal boxes (I will get to that in a minute), Lufkin dividers, Starrett plumb bob, 3oz brass hammerhead, and a Proto Pro pinch bar.

(to be continued...

So, the three metal boxes. The top one is a socket set I picked up at the last stop, and older lady having a sale in the country. I normally don't stop at these, but her sign said tools, so off I went. Well, it was late afternoon, and she was pretty picked over. But this was on the table and just before I picked it up, she said everything was 1/2 off... So, $2.50 for the socket set!

I picked up at the estate sale which I went to, thinking it was picked over months ago. So, along with the Stanley plane, the Blue Point set and the CAT catalog.

I have seen plenty of Whitney sets, but never one of these.

And finally, no way I was passing this up!

I don't really know what the set was for or if it is complete, but the label was good enough for me.
All told I spent about $50 for everything.

With my unexpected great finds I keep finding tools "better" and "cheaper" than what's in my tool box. The tools I am talking about are not sentimental. The sockets I posted here yesterday are minty -V- 3/8" 6pt deep 12pt shallow SAE in the metal carriers (guessing that's how they use to be sold?). Not long ago I picked up the same size/spec sockets in minty 80s -V-/-G-. Interesting differences. Newer -V- is not the same as older -V-. To be expected I guess with a ~20 year -V- production.

What years did Craftsman sell sockets in the metal carriers? Or if they didn't, what years did they sell the metal socket carriers? That will make my comparison more interesting.

Observations:
1. Older V has ball shaped detents in the base; Newer V and G have a less pronounced ledge.
2. Older V has a square base all the way to the drive. Newer V and G start with a circle then change to the 3/8 square for the drive.
3. Socket heights are all over the place. In some sizes Newer G is taller. In some sizes older V is taller.

Attached pics show all this. I messed up the first picture. Older V is on the left in every picture except the first one.

I plan to keep the older V and sell the new V/G. Any objections speak now!!!(Any thoughts really).

Nice subdivision garage sale this morning. I picked up this box of old-school Craftsman socket sets along with a Williams 1/2dr Superratchet.
I love finding that old craftsman =v= stuff. I can't stop buying it and still have several hundred pieces. Nice work.

Nice OTC case. I think the lifetime ratchet was part of a crescent set if I remember correctly from my ratchet days.

Looking for a Plomb 3061 Pebble Open End.

I have seen some =v= series sockets in the metal flip trays or at least in 3/8" drive. Overall I think I have 6 3/8" sets in the flip cases and 2 are =v=. Like you have mentioned I have also seen -v- series as well.

Looking for a Plomb 3061 Pebble Open End.

If the boxes were primarily just used during the =V= era then these -V- are likely near the beginning of the -V- era. Maybe around 1970.

So you would recommend I keep them both :)

I wouldn't mind that. Wife doesn't believe I need more than one of the same tool. Hoping to sell some of my finds to cover the costs and keep wife happy :).

I went to my first estate sale today since February before all this **** happened. It was 30 miles away, but it was a big barn sale that advertised tons of tools and that the previous owner worked in the movie industry and there was lots of furniture and props. This sale sounded interesting enough to lure me out for the first time in 4 months. There were photos of a few old MAC toolboxes so I figured I could find some good stuff. I left my house at 6:20 and got there right as it opened at 7, mask on face and hands in gloves. I get in there and the corner the toolboxes were in was taped off and not for sale. Everything else was junk.

So I drove 40 minutes home and went right back to bed.

Ask the wife about shoes... End of subject...

I trained SWMBO from the beginning; the garage is mine, and don't ask, and don't tell... She has always been fine with the arrangement...

First date - Lunch. Second and third were race track and gun range. - Never been an issue.

Hate it when a sale goes like that.
