...and an anvil.
"...and an anvil," our host says casually. An anvil? AN ANVIL!? It's a Fisher-Norris Eagle Anvil! The oldest anvil maker in the US (Trenton, NJ, baby!) and they also made the most anvils in the US. Coolest part of their history is that a woman, Harriet Fisher, famously ran the entire business for most of its existence, at a time before women could vote, before the ERA, etc. Hers is an amazing story. I will link to a thread with a tiny brass paperweight "H. FISHER" anvil I have (found and reported here last year) that I believe could have been hers. In that thread is a link to an article with a short summary of her amazing life.

EDIT: Actually, I re-posted a photo of Harriet in her office at Fisher-Norris Eagle Anvil Works and the article about her life (if you need some enticement, she drove a car around the world, including some steamers, of course, with an entourage) in a page 2 post in that thread, linked here.

What does it weigh? The smaller ones (25 lbs) are all the rage lately and fetch huge prices.

I agree with Lugz... just casually mentioning at the end of a rundown that you scored an anvil, especially that one, is a classic almost comical understatement.

Kinda like somebody mentioning that they scored a big lot of old sockets in a bucket and when cleaning them out they found oh yeah... a double eagle.

I am not going to say you **** about that haul LS, not because you didn't come away with wonderful things, but because circumstances such as what brought you to the tools are always difficult, and are thus much more important than simply getting a good score.

Well done honoring a man and a family that has always done you right.

PS: I restored a Sears scroll saw like that one years ago, never used it, and later moved it along. Now I have a Delta, that I never use and with my current and forever tiny space am thinking about moving it on. Funny how it goes.

What does it weigh?

Indeed. My next project. MrsLS’s bathroom scale is made of tempered glass. I’m going to have to be very careful.
I did get the peeling hunter green paint and loose rust off.

Edit - 99.4lbs
About the same as LesserDaughter3 or 10% more than LesserLab2.

(Pics in case anyone wants to try setting a hard heavy object on a sheet of glass.)

...honoring a man and a family that has always done you right...

Exactly

In a previous post I showed a Sykes hydraulic puller that I got. The set below was also part of the ad and I assumed it was a harbour freight one. Turns out it’s a Sykes set too.

Very nice anvil LS!

Here is today's minor accumulation.

Yankee (Stanley) No.41 Push Drill. I have half a dozen but got this for the box--which promptly disintegrated by the time I got it to the car... Oh, well. $4

Millers Falls No. 29 Ratcheting Screwdriver. Excellent shape. $8

Disston No. 16 Panel Saw Handle Excellent condition 1896-1917. $2

As mentioned previously, I recruited my son to go help a friend I grew up with move some stuff. We took our time looking through is dad’s home shop, which was a trip down memory lane for me. I was particularly struck my the more massive power tools. One I had intended to dismantle enough to take was a 220V planer (eyeballed 12”), which I could put to use on my father’s hoard of rough-sawn ash. But it remains more massive in person than my memory recalls, and I just haven’t solved the problem of getting it out of the basement, and then to my parents’ place. Still, it calls to me.
There was a Dunlap table saw (splitter/antikickback in previous post), a huge Craftsman underline wood lathe (no pic - it’s propped up in a dim corner), a very large Craftsman underline scrollsaw, and an intact 1/3hp Craftsman block grinder on a home-made stand. (Model number plates in previous post.) Also stacks of seasoned native hardwoods, and this massive stone grinding wheel.
Smaller stuff in drawers included a set of Cman underline turning tools (I have an identical set from my grandfather), innumerable parts, etc. If I had the equipment to move it, space to set it up, and cash to justify it, I’d take it all. The family has always been very welcoming and generous to me, and I’d love to honor his father’s tools by keeping them together. But it will be better for my friend’s mother if they sell them off, and that’s what he’s planning.
Very cool.

Picked this up today at a garage sale. Not a steal but should be some wiggle room to make little on it. Paid $75 for it.

Also picked up a bunch of smalls that I have to get some pics of.IMG_20200702_195740368.jpegIMG_20200702_195751011_BURST001.jpeg

So between the dearth of available sales, and the surge in C-19, I've benched myself from most sales. Why? According to the risk ratings I'm high risk, (Age and BP) SWMBO is even higher risk, and my mom is extremely high risk.

  • I hit my first YS in 3 months three weeks or so ago. Everyone was cool and playing safe.
  • Last Sat it was a bit looser, but still reasonable (No Yard Sales worth trying in the gap...)
  • Sun I hit ONE, and the people doing it had no masks, one "shopper" had a mask and the other didn't. Then a carload came in - No masks and crowding past... I left, FAST!

So as painful as it is for me, I'm again pretty much done with garage/yard/estate sales until this blows over. (maybe if they state; "Masks Required" or other indicators of sanity) I hate paying Eprey prices, but better to cherry pick and maybe fill hard to fill gaps for a while...

I just won a white gas radiant heater I've been Jonesing for that was only made in Canada for maybe 5-6 years; a 519 Coleman small and compact, 3000 BTU and fully adjustable. It will be a user. (camping mostly) -Pics when it gets here.

Maybe I'll take up fishing in the local lakes again...

LS, Great haul, but sad circumstances for sure. I'm sure he would have been glad to see some of his stuff remain "En Family"

I can see the markings showing it’s a 350. A good deal for just $75

3 1/2 inch wide jaws for those reading this that aren’t so familiar with Wilton bullets.
Thanks for the info. I was reading the Wilton marking thread trying to figure it out.

That MF with the rotating barrel looks like a Craftsman I picked up a few months back. Finding yours in a catalog will give me a clue as to how old mine is. Thanks

It sure does! According to the Old Tool Heaven http://oldtoolheaven.com/driversdrills/screwdrivers.htm MF made the No. 29 with the red handle from 1956-1959. '60-71 they had a black handle.

Even though the Texas rate is still climbing, they haven't shut down the sales, but they do absolutely require masks to enter and they limit the number of people inside. After they reach the limit, one has to leave for a new customer to come in. Estate sailors here are respectful of the rules and the folks running the sales keep on top of it. The cops occasionally check and I was told it's a $1000 fine times the number over the limit inside the sale. No operator wants to face that so they make sure not to cross the line.

Some of it will. My buddy and his brother are taking what they want, gifting some to extended family and friends. The rest will go at sale, to his mother’s benefit.

Small haul (Lugz 2020_22) from the flea market today.

attachment.php

The small brass FE (pre-Zip Code guessing 50's...) is perfect for a ragtop or a motorcycle. The rusty "S" adjustable Westcott style wrench is a Keystone No. 80 10 incher, which is a size I needed for the collection. The tiny ratcheting DBE is a vintage K-D for the K-D collection. The antique DOE wrench is for the Kraeuter collection. The Mechanics Vest Pocket Reference book is a 1943 and going in the vintage library. The brass tire gauge is a factory jeep quality Schrader US Ordnance Dept from WWII. Flippety-flip on that.

I did have my first semi-major flub of the year. I won't be kicking myself in the *** all day, but I was upset for an hour or so. Had a Millers Falls clamp-on benchtop drill stand in my hand. The guy wanted $50. I was hoping for less. There was stuff everywhere - vises, wrenches, etc, (including the Schrader gauge and the Westcott), I put it down and started pawing, thinking I could talk him into a few other things and the drill stand for $50, and not 5 minutes later some other guy walked up and bought it.

Turns out I already have the K-D, and the Keystone 'Westcott', which is stuck with rust, is actually a Keystone 'Fordson', but that's close enough for me. The Kraeuter is also soaking. But here are some close-ups of the portable FE, the markings on the tire pressure gauge for those who have never seen one, and the pocket guide.

I was momentarily fooled into thinking the FE may have actually been intended for dental office use, based on the maker's name, but why would an office need a portable FE, and why would the label refer to ignition wires and coils (...trying to repress a wicked flashback to 1977 and my Austin-Healey Sprite on fire...)? And then I did some research. I still don't understand the name, but Brooklyn Dental Mfg dates back to the 1890's, and they made blowers and forges and all kinds of stuff. It's full, by the way. I was hoping to identify the contents before I tried it. No such luck yet. The wartime FE's I am used to are carbon tetrachloride. Not sure about these little jobbies.

Lugz, I think you are right about the carbon tet in the FE. Can be nasty stuff.

I agree. Carbon Tetrachloride was used as an industrial degreaser. Long ago, my machinist FIL had a squirt bottle full of the stuff he got from work that he used at home for cleaning parts. It dissolved grease just as well as mineral spirits and as a bonus it wasn’t flammable.

Health concerns only popped up later.

Reposting a garage sale find that was lost when the site went down.

Garage Sell: 40yr elevator mechanic selling tools that he had mostly been given on the job. Variety of brands. Craftsman ranged from a =V= DBE set to Craftsman china made ratchet wrench sets. I needed an impact set and asked how much. He said $20. I said what brand. He didn't know. Who would think the seller doesn't know his own tool? Especially his only impact set. We both grabbed a socket and read "Snap On". He said that is going to cost me. Then said $50. I countered $40 and he agreed.

After my original post some said to bring a flashlight or magnifying glass or anything not to ask the question and that I lost $20. In fact I still saved over $100 from ebay prices and it was still a great deal. I wasn't out to run over anybody. Still a great find! And my first Snap On sockets ever :)

So Yesterday I said "No more Sales" Today I see a TOO, and pull over and look from the van. Everyone is masked and its not crowded (maybe one couple):

2 GIANT Speakers, and then someone moved and I see this:

attachment.php

I call out from the van "how much for the old vise?"

"25 Dollars!"

Had it not been such a deal I'd have moved on. but at that price, I masked up made sure it was not completely frozen, and offered 20. -No dice. I look at the speakers label, and give the place a quick once over and gave her the $25!

And out of there! Its not huge, 4" jaws, but appears to be hand forged. No names in any of the usual places.

So that's the dilemma - well behaved, its minimal risk. But it only takes a few fools... (and those fools are the ones that are likely to catch and spread it...)

I'm going to go back tomorrow ask ask how much the speakers are, again from the van. Those could be $$$

Nice find! I too am avoiding sales given the disturbing rise in cases that is directly attributable to people getting lazy about precautions. Don't need other people's stupidity getting me sick!

Been very slow in my area for sales with "man" stuff. I don't know if it's because so many folks are at home due to the Covid-19 thing and are taking the opportunity to go through their **** but I never in my life seen so many sales with kids clothes and toys, holiday and home decorations. Hardly any sales mentioning tools other than yard type tools. Hopefully things change soon.

Was out running errands later in the morning and took the opportunity to hit a family run estate sale but wasn't expecting much from the looks of the sale photos. Got lucky and rummaged through an old tool box with miscellaneous tools and was able to drag out this Penens SAE wrench set in a Challenger roll and surprisingly a couple of Snap-On combo's not pictured all for the princely sum of $12. My wallet was happy.

Somegai got a great deal on that blacksmith’s vise.

Even though I swore off post vises, it would have been greatly tempting to pick that one up myself had I been 5 minutes in front of you. I’m sure I could have come up with some weak kind of rationalization.

Are you planning Evaporust?

My most tempting moment was when I saw this pile at an outdoor flea market WAY before the pandemic hit. I walked away empty handed even though prices started at under $200

I'll use the cup wire wheel on this Shift. I kind of like the "browned/blued" look, and it also works for some rust protection. If I were to go all out I'd soak it in the E-tank

I did manage to get bit by it - the handle slammed down and caught my palm at the base of my right thumb. A bit of a blood blister.

I hit up an estate sale and a garage sale yesterday, and here is what I picked up

The garage sale yielded some English nail pullers, OTC style lock ring pliers, a Plomb spinner and two APEX slotted bit drivers for a little over six bucks. The estate sale got me two (forgot one in the truck) Proto LA adjustable, a Proto crowbar (with bent tip) and this

The 11 drawer Huot was $40 and the Proto goods were another $5.
I also figured what the OTC box and such I picked up a week or so ago is for, its a snap-ring set!
