2020 Garage Sale Thread

The main attraction in my flea market haul this morning (Lugz 2020_33) is the BELL SYSTEM B toolkit. It's full and I will unveil the treasures on the 'Bell System' thread. The mess of orphan tools includes some uncommon items, such as the Triumph (car or bike, not sure...) DBE wrench, a Billings tappet wrench, a Handy Andy (boys' toy toolkit) DOE wrench, that b]Vlchelk[/b] spark plug socket off to the right there, the 8" combination slip-joint McKaig-Hatch pliers with a monograph style logo I have never seen before, two Long C Craftsman Circle-H 3/8-inch drive pieces, and a late 1930's Plomb/b] 5249 3/8-inch drive ratchet. The Lutz Tool & File Handle is not rare, and neither is the Bonney -ZENEL- DOE wrench, but it does have some odd markings.

The detonator brings back a lot of memories for me Lugz. When I first started working in the mining industry I was tasked with hand drilling and blasting a large boulder field as part of a crushing contract. I spent the better part of the winter in 78' drilling holes in 20 boulders at a time and then loading them up with about 1/4 stick or so each and popping them. Then lay out another batch and repeat....

The blaster was rated for 10 caps in series but by running parallel strings it would reliably pop 20 at a time. A lot of hard work rewarded with a brief bit of fun. A couple pics of my old equipment. Ed.

Neat! When I was a kid growing up, the one sporting goods store in town had in the back with all the camping stuff a locked metal door in the wall. So, as kids will do, I asked what that was. The guy who worked there said, "oh, dynamite."

I thought that was so cool.

Hit an estate sale a few miles from me, and from the pics it looked like the guy had done some gunsmithing, on a hobby level. Well, I wasn't disappointed in the selection, though the prices left a little something to be desired...

Anyway, here is what I picked up, and I will be back when half-off day comes:

Millers Falls number set, Remington ammo box (empty) for .32-20 (I have one), Thorsen breaker bar (I needed one) and some war-time Plomb.

Also picked up a couple books:

I have a reprint of the Howe book already, but this is much nicer, and I had been thinking of picking up the Baker book for a while. So, happy with that! I paid $24 for all of that.

Then I hit two garage sales that don't actually start until tomorrow (D'oh!) and a dud sale I didn't realize I had been too before. Finally, I finished up at a thrift store where I have found good books before, and picked up these:

They are a post-war reprint of a 1906 machinists set. British, which is always fun, but a good reference. $9 altogether.

Thanks for sharing that story and the photos, Ed! You had a lot more fun than me that year - I was just out of HS and doing the slop work for a company pouring concrete slabs for a very early rent-a-space property. I didn't notice that the brass data plate was out of focus when I snapped my pics but it was marked Corps of Engineers and Hercules, a huge name in blasting powder and equipment. The seller wanted $250 for it!

That is a twin! Your decal looks a bit nicer. It also had 3 drive studs in the box! I buy drive studs every time I see them as they always seem to get lost.

3bay is going to love the ratchet in today's flea market haul (Lugz 2020_34). And I'm not saying why, because that would give it away! Also added two more SPEEDNUT's to my collection, one being the original Cochran (which has GJ Founder bloodlines, if you didn't know it...), in a black enamel finish, which I didn't have, and the other being a second, later Corp wrench. Also another BELL SYSTEM brace bit, and another 5/16", this one made by Billings, which I didn't know was supplying them.

VBW ratchet. Stamping means it was made for the Dutch army in 65. Also some Belzer and Snap On sockets in the box.

I was thumbing through my neighborhood “Nextdoor” website and saw an ad for “Ford Wrenches”. The ad had been up a week or two and the Ford wrenches were gone but the owner wanted to get rid of the remaining monkey wrenches and made me an offer I couldn’t pass up.

I need 36 monkey wrenches like I need another 36 holes in my head, but at $20 for the lot, that works out to $0.55 each.

The small ones are 6", most are 8", a few 10" and a single 12".

There are:

I went to two sales yesterday that were totally worthless so I went back to the place where I bought the CM Crown 1/4dr set to see if I had overlooked anything. Turns out I had! I found the flex handle marked for $4 but the guy remembered me from the day before and when I told him it belonged to the set, he let me have it.

The only issue is the retaining ball is missing. Is that something that can be easily fixed? I think I can find a ball bearing and a stout little spring laying around the garage, then it would just be a PITA exercise of trying to keep it all together while trying to peen the opening closed. I feel myself getting frustrated just thinking about it...



While there I picked up a Millers Falls No.61 spiral screw driver - $1
and a Kraeuter 1661-6 needle nose side cutters - $0.50

These two alone were worth the Andrew Jackson. The H.D. Smith is not at all common to find (I have a 6"), and the Boos is even more uncommon.

I hit a bunch of Tahoe garage sales this morning and came home with one item. It is an old Forsberg wood handle hacksaw with one of the coolest logos ever. The logo alone was worth the $1.00 investment.

I have a couple of Forsberg drills with that logo, and the logo was the main reason that I bought them--other than, of course, that I didn't already have one of them. Never saw a hacksaw from that company though.

My day went well compared to the past 6 months or so, but terrible for the last weekend in August usually this Sat/Sun, are the highlight of the year with literally hundreds ot Yard sale in an old section of town. The driving event was canceled, and only ONE person advertised a sale, (I think everyone else was counting on others to do the CL adds, and with the event canceled, - BIG FAIL...

Most everything came from an estate sale 2 miles from my house the last photo shows what I got from the "EVENT"... All notable things came from the Estate sale...

Some actual TOOLS for once. they had tons, but I was very selective.

Besides the chemicals, A Proto LA obstruction wrench, SO 1/4" Ratchet (never seen thi style in 1/4"), Crestalloy Duck bills I thought were needlenose till I picked them up, "Adjustable" (brand) C-clamps, AMPCO BeCu DOE, (this one goes into my Coleman tools) A welding Magnet, and a boxed and gimbaled compass.

An Ammo box (this one wil replace the one I store primers in for obvious reasons!)

A Coleman 228F, (1/73), A 3000-5000BTU heater, and a gallon of Coleman fuel!

And some welding supplies and materials: All Told $27!

and at the (non) "Event" yardsales - only a tiny reel that caught my eye, some cable clamps, a socket Tray (Craftsman and 3/8 deep I believe), and an Aluminum measuring cup that I first thought travel cup... (Headed for my camp gear)

While sipping the morning coffee ,I came across a FB Marketplace ad and promptly contacted the seller, met his ransom demands,PayPal, $4, must pick up within 7 days,meet in public,etc. By 10:30 am we had met and a heavy box was in my car. Proceeded home to get some remodeling done, and finally about 5pm was able to retrieve the box and begin sorting on the bench.


I had seen a few choice items in the original ad but the goodies just kept coming as I emptied it onto the bench. The calipers are Starret and Lufkin,bench block is a Starret129,v blocks are Brown and Sharpe. There are scribe points,Jacobs chuck, the machinist jacks are parkerized ,but no name that I can see.I'll look harder. And of course one little gem right in the center ,which will be a key addition to my collection.I've lusted after them,never found one in the wild until now. Happens to have kelvinator stamped on the backside.
The needles(about 11:00 in one of the pics ) is interesting ,I am guessing for leather work???
The tap extractors are something I've wished I've had a few times. The Toledo pipe taps are cool that they are in their boxes,but I am pretty sure I'll never thread pipe ever. Link below to the full album of pics to avoid multiple posts.

I went to a 2nd day estate sale this morning, everything was half off. I brought home this pile for $4.50. The little parts organizer is loaded with mostly new misc. hardware. The spanner wrench is J.H Williams, Fulton needle nose, Craftsman cutters, and no name "forged in USA" snips.

FM stop today yielded more than usual. Was fortunate enough to negotiate with the booth owner in person. He was motivated with his booth full and having another load to bring in. Ended up with $40 in the tool boxes (Park, Kennedy, and 2 Craftsman) and contents. The Kennedy box has two top removable trays, PO used it for electrical work. The push drill is my first 'Bell Systems' marked tool, they are sparse in this area.

The Craftsman 789-46210 survey level; seller was asking $50 and came down to $25. Was able to confirm glass, focus, and levels were functional before bringing home.

Sorting through the tub of hardware will provide some entertainment.
