Marty, sweet haul. Nice socket set. Very nice condition.

Today I decided to take advantage of a rare day off, and see what was going on at the Wednesday flea market.

This my first flea market since March I believe!

There were few vendors, maybe 12-15, but I still managed to find some treasures for under 20 bucks, all bought from three vendors that I like buying from to boot!

First pic is the whole haul.

attachment.php

Unknown antique looking tool. It has a split steel beam, with a brass knurled wheel that slides along bringing the ends together to hold something. Handle is wood.

Anyone know what this is? It looked interesting so I brought it home.

attachment.php

I hit on a few possible aircraft tools at one vendor’s table. Looked at a box of mainly import sockets, and spotted the Duro Chrome 3/8 breaker bar with an extension handle. I kept poking through the sockets, and it was worth it. Came up with an AN crowfoot and Bonney deep crowfoot, Walden socket, and Gearwrench adapter. The cherry on top was yet another Proto clamp socket! Also added a small Wiha driver and what would have been a nice Vlchek screwdriver with the logo, but the tip is busted.

For all in the photo he charged me $2. :rocker:

Some Aircraft/military type oldies.

attachment.php

Female end in breaker bar.

attachment.php

I continued looking though his other stuff, and grabbed the two speeders, Proto Los Angeles and Walden, plus a Proto oil pressure socket and deep Mac, all for $4 more.

Couldn’t complain about his prices.

attachment.php

From a third vendor, rescued some tools in varying condition.

Matco flywheel wrench, Matco Screwdriver, metric pedal wrench and oddball Super Sam open end that I probably should have left, as both have been altered.

Sockets are Mac, Snap On, Williams, Craftsman semi deep, and New Britain. Walden Worcester t handle socket wrench minus the cross bar, a nice Wards combo wrench by Barcalo, and a Mopar advertising tape measure/level.

attachment.php

Overall it was a good day for the short time I was there, and glad I got out.

Are these numbers just from August? Is there a YTD update?

Mike

Yes, just August! I was amazed at the uptick, partly because I have not been getting out much myself (using up weekends doing maintenance on the family cabin).
I will take a look at YTD numbers. Haven’t done that yet.

There was a $10 fill a bag garage sale this past Sunday. Bunch of misc tools and hardware. Also some old Coleman literature, and a ton of wire nuts, romex clamps / inserts, etc.

A few of us were allowed into a sale a few days early, which was supposed to start Saturday. There was a stack of miscellaneous old school hardware cabinets that sold for $30, which made us more than jealous. I thought I took pictures but I apparently failed to do so.

My second place prize was a fairly nice tanker desk and a pile of tools / hardware for $80.

Outlaw will be along shortly to inquire about the Coleman literature [emoji23][emoji23]

Well, "Inquire" isn't quite accurate:

 Merc, I've NEVER seen any literature for the lamps. That's super rare... (even in posts on the Coleman Forum) I'll award suckage on that one!

Additional pics of unknown tool.

3bay,

FWIW from ebay, there are a few other pictures in the listing too:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/ANTIQUE-JEWELERS-SET-OF-THREE-PIN-VISES-/303574395441

I think they look familiar to me, but I don't recall seeing one with the square/hole end. I am used to seeing just a pointy end, like a pin vise. You can still buy new pin vise style ones.

Is yours hollow? to allow wire to go through the handle? from tip to pommel?

Yours looks like it is in much better condition than the examples I found on ebay. I.E. handle wood not cracked?

You’ve confirmed my suspicion. Myself, the vendor, and a one armed man (literally) were talking over whether or not it was a pin vise or held a blade of some kind. It does have the hollowed out wire size channel in each half, so that makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, it’s cracked like the other one. I don’t think I’ve run into these before. Thanks!

Back on Sunday, the wife sent me out looking for old dressers to give extra storage in the basement. Well, didn't find any worth the name, but I did find tools! (Imagine that...) One place I stopped at was cleaning out a garage after an estate sale, so I was able to pick up a cardboard box of misc. tools for $7. The highlights:

Snap-on, Ray, Blackhawk and P&C sockets, Proto extension and 6" adjustable, P&C and Utica needle nose types, the oldest pair of Kleins I have found (1/17), a Stanley utility knife, and a ton of bits, chisels and allen wrenches:

After looking at a few stops with no avail, I hit a TOO and while it didn't have any tools to speak of, I did pick up this bridge lamp in need of work for $2

and the guy had this bad boy for $5

It is a 1930ish Majestic 91, and it must weigh all of 200 pounds. Retailing new for $137 it is complete, and in pretty good condition. I am not sure if I am going to restore it back to its AM glory or if I will pull out the internals, wire in a Tube receiver that picks up Bluetooth and have a nice old cabinet that I can listen to something other than nothing.

Ok guys, I am feeling a little dense. What is a TOO? I have been wracking my brain, and I am sure I will hate myself for not realizing an obvious answer.

Thanks

Just wanted to assure all interested parties that I am reviewing past “****”s.
As I've mentioned before, not a straightforward process, and I have not made it as easy as I might have in my monthly updates, because I’ve only reported the identity of single-**** recipients sporadically. I don’t think accumulated single-***** would reach the level of the multi-***** some of our high-flyers get, but it could certainly affect who’s in the topmost spot.
Thanks, Mike, for asking about a YTD review, because if you had not, I wouldn’t have noted that oversight until crunch-time in December.

Thanks guys, would never have guessed that one. A drive by, vs a planned stop.

I had no idea what the frequent references to TOOs were either. A drive by in the Bay Area has kind of a different meaning to me though. Maybe an unplanned stop at an unexpected sale is more what I look for.:) We could use the patriotic sounding acronym USUS.

BMW: That lamp is extremely cool! How tall is that cabinet radio?

LESSERSON: Is a multi-**** one guy getting multiple ***** for multiple finds, or a single find? Maybe we need two categories, LOL...

:scared:NOooo!!!!

Upon re-review...
Seventy-one GS-threaders have received at least one “****” YTD.

The top four recipients are
(12) Davefr, bmwrd0
(10) r_olson_06, freudianfloyd

The top eight in the single-digit tier are
(7) tinmedic, b.well, Provincial, Rileysan
(6) pelletman
(5) Outlawmws, Old Radar, 3Jakes

I apologize for any clerical and/or accounting errors I may have committed here, but I will not be conducting any further investigations or statistical spelunking into months Jan-Aug, as a precaution against retcon rash, paradox psychosis, mobius malady, etc.

I'd vote restoration as it's hard to find complete radios with cabinets not all beaten-to-heck or water-damaged. Heck, there's probably enough room in there that you could fit in a Bluetooth receiver as well and add a switch to use the existing speaker.

At night, I'm able to pull in stations from 200 miles away using my c. 1939 Zenith tabletop model.

Like clockwork :) Thanks! I may make my way over there at some point, though that may be a bad rabbit hole for me to go down after looking at what GJ has done. Not sure whether to frame them or find them a new home. I've offloaded most of my really vintage Coleman stuff and now just have a pile of boxed 413 / 425 / 426 suitcases, single burners, and a few dual fuel lanterns.

Master Lugz, any idea where the lamps in this post came from?

I am going to be having my first yard sale this weekend if anybody is in the southern Ohio area. I am already starting to regret it though. I posted it early on Marketplace to try to get some buzz, and was bombarded with questions and people wanting to come early, wanting me to itemize everything I am selling, with prices and pictures. Seriously! I did wind up selling a couple things early but put in the ad, no early birds. I haven't even started putting prices on stuff yet.

Going to see if I can talk the wife into watching the sale so I can go to more yard sales, its supposed to be a nice weekend.

Three estate sales today with interesting things at each. First stop I pulled in a lot of wrenches and sockets. The gray box was chock-full of wrenches—most were CM DBEs and combos =V=,-V-, =VV= & -VV-. About a third were Taiwanese Alltrade and ProMate (the two baskets on the right). The rest were a set of Indestro Select Steel short offset box end wrenches and then ones and twos of Proto, Vlchek, Bonney, Blue Point, Duro Chrome and unbranded. $18.
The socket rails were $3 each—one had ½ inch Thorsens and the other a few 3/8 inch CM=v=, Thorsens and some from Taiwan. The ½ Thorsen 77C ratchet was $5.
Everything else was in a $5 bag and included the 3/8 Duro Chrome ratchet, a few Bonny sockets, some Ace branded sockets and a ¼ inch set from Taiwan.

attachment.php

Second stop provided more wrenches from Herbrand, Indestro, Bonney and Armstrong. Also an English TW spanner and a small W&B 21. W&B is Whitman & Barnes—they were bought out by J.H. Williams in 1920.
The cutters are Snap-on Vacuum Grip #386 from 1946. L26 Thin nose slip-joint pliers from Crescent Tool Co. A nice Greenfield Tap & Die tap handle No.5. and a Lufkin Mezurall 926 6’ steel tape measure. $14 for the lot.

attachment.php

At the third stop $7 bought a couple items from a Ford Model-A tool kit; an original patent Allway Saw handle (1935-6) and three blades—the coarse one is designed to fit the “improved” handle; three North Bros. Yankee Handyman Drill Points; a no-name steel file handle and a two-bladed screwdriver from “StewarT” that I can find no information on.
Can anyone give me a vector?

That Stewart screwdriver is made for adjusting/ changing the combs on a sheep shearing hand piece.

Outstanding! Thanks for the answer! Using a few key terms from your reply I turned up a wealth of info on the net.

Now that I've cleaned it up, I can also see that there probably was a third blade like most of the newer ones have. I've also seen photos of some with only two blades (3rd pic)--were they available that way or have they had the third blade snapped off also? The 4th pic is claiming 1950s vintage. Do you think mine is older or just less well taken care of?

Thanks again midnitemack!

The small 9/32 drive ratchet came from eBay. First one I've ever seen.

First time poster on the garage sale thread. I need to do it more often because I have found a number of things recently worthy of a post here. Take for example my find from earlier this week. I saw an estate sale ad that allowed a presale so I made an appointment and stopped by. Judging by the pictures posted, I could have left empty handed. I found several PLVMB, S-K, and Proto items, but then the seller mentioned the shed out back. "It's just full of trash but you can have a look."

I went out there to find a trashed workshop/shed. But buried underneath some bags of fire-ant killer I found this ratchet that was so covered with rust. I picked it up and scratched off the rust. Sure enough, Snap-on F-70-M.

It was totally seized up but I got the gears moving when I stick a deep socket on there and worked with it. When I opened it up it was filled with sludge. Here's the before and after a night in Evaporust, a deep clean, and some lube.

I picked this up off of FB Market. Was not local; seller agreed to ship. $50 all in. Nice condition, both the box and the tools. We know Craftsman didn't make these. Who did? Greenfield?

Added some pics, by request :)

It was totally seized up but I got the gears moving when I stick a deep socket on there and worked with it. When I opened it up it was filled with sludge. Here's the before and after a night in Evaporust, a deep clean, and some lube.

Nice save, Kid B!

What's the deal with the quotation marks around "Craftsman"? That doesn't seem right.

Those quotation marks have been the subject of discussion before but that is a real sears craftsman set. I bet if he shows us a picture of the lid it would show the heritage logo. I can’t remember the vendor who made them for sears

I do not know why, nor why it matters, but I love this write-up I found on papawswrench.

"Both sets, 5499, the big set and 5493, the medium set were made by Greenfield Tool & Die for Sears. The newest catalog I could find them in is the 1948 Hand Tool Book that m_fumich posted last week. Thanks again Matt!
This is absolutely the best tap and die sets that I have ever seen. They use a chaser system that you can adjust to control the thread diameter. Tighter or looser. There is a set of chasers and a threaded cast iron guide bushing for each thread size. The chasers drop into tapered pockets in the handle and then the guide bushing threads in after to hold them in. There are little set screws in the side to fine tune thee thread diameter. The large handle in the 5499 set is 22 inches long! I bought the 5493 Medium sized set complete. It will thread from 1/4-20 to 1/2-13. The larger 5499 set goes from 1/4-20 to 3/4-18."

Looks like I did great!!! :)
