Clean the end of the slide on top and look for markings. Sometimes they are faint. I suspect its a Sweetheart Era Stanley

Is that a good thing? It seemed to be higher quality than the run of the mill little clamp vises

Good question, I don't see a name on it so far.

The markings on my sweetheart-era Stanley 746 are NOT faint. However, the day I picked this up, the same vendor had an apparently-identical vise (with a handle) but without any visible marks. (I should have bought both!) I have a 742 which does not have the cast company logo, but does rock the stamp on the slide.
While I was in Maine last year I saw a similar vise from the Stanley Rule & Level Co era, which (IIRC) must have been a fairly narrow time slot, following the buyout of the original manufacturer and preceding the Stanley-Stanley merger.
And, it is a very nice little table vise, marked or otherwise. The patent I’m thinking is JGBaker 877695 applied for 2/26/07 granted 1/28/08.

Edit - here is my post on the Rule&Level. Sorry (again) I didn’t take a photo.

Interesting on the P&C handles. I have never scene any like that. Is there any way to get a bigger picture of just the two of them?

They were about twelve of them brand new in a old card board box with the name on it. I didn't think much of it till I did some research and couldn't find any information.

Huh, I have never seen one, and I live about an hour south of P&C central. I will have to ask the local hard-core P&C guy if he has seen those.

Can you post that in the P&C thread? I hope I am not asking too much...

I think this was a later production. Proto ran a "ruby line" that was a economic line and it looks very similar just a different color.

The other side says "8356 MFD USA." The metal is a little thicker than a metal clothes hanger.

Saw an ad for a garage sale coming up this weekend that included "alot of tools". But not one tool in the pictures. I asked what kind of tools and was told mostly woodworking. I've been looking for a draw knife. The woman said she has her grandfather's that is at least 50 years old. I agreed to $15 for it and picked up these other things as well for a grand total of $35.

Draw Knife - 9" serrated blade. Stamped 9", but nothing else.... any idea for maker?
Disston D-23 (most visible blade writing I have seen. maybe newest Disston I have seen too).
Chainsaw blade sharpener (wood on bottom for easy clamping to workbench)
Nail puller (never saw one before!)
Silicone cloth in a nice metal case

The Disston is an HKPorter era model, which aren't considered to be worthy of the name. But, I once needed a hand saw in a hurry and bought a cheap modern Stanley at HD. That sharptooth has saved my hide more times than I care to count.

Yes, yes it does. :lol_hitti

Nicely done.

I thought this Gedore wood handle was too cool to leave behind. Not something I see every day.

It still said Disston USA but the screws are not brass like the old ones. And doesn't say PHL like the really old ones :)

3Bay, what is the size on the Gedore? Is it metric? Years ago I found a wood handled WERA in 9mm at the swap. I only use it on Huret derailers but I love that thing. Over the years I pick up any wood handled metric spinners I find.

Can you show a better pic of the blade, don't see anything in the pic showing serrations

Thanks for asking. Definitely not a serrated blade like on my pocket knives. That is the word the seller used. The actual end of the blade is straight. Not sure what you call the grooves that follow.

Looks like a crappy sharpening job from here, like someone used a file, which I don't think you can do. MAybe bouncing it on a grinding wheel. I've never seen that on a WW tool except for toothing blades for pre-veneer work, and they are usually very fine (50 / inch). I'd be curious if anyone else chimes in.

The seller only used it a few times and never sharpened it. Originally owned by the Grandfather 50+ years ago. Not sure if the Father ever used it, the nail puller was her father's. Regardless, any sharpening would go back at least one generation.

I am curious too :)

I had a little chat with the seller and I was off by a generation. The draw knife was the seller's mom's grandfather's. So the seller's great-grandfather. The seller also checked with her dad, who said he didn't sharpen it either. So likely hasn't been sharpened for 50+ years and is likely well over 100 years old.

Running a blade quickly along a wheel will do that. Especially if the wheel is running rough as in a pedal operated type.

Never seen one mentioned in a vintage catalog, but that doesn't mean some old timer didn't think it worked better that way.

Running a blade quickly along a wheel will do that. Especially if the wheel is running rough as in a pedal operated type.

Could it be intentional for a specific task? Like for taking the bark off wet or pitchy timbers?

All interesting ideas. Thanks for the intel.

I don't know that it needs sharpening but my first thought was how to sharpen it without damaging the serrations. Seems they are not factory, and if and when it needs sharpening just don't worry about them and sharpen as needed.

Picked up a couple Plomb swivel sockets and a pair of hand vises at the flea market this morning (Lugz 2020_37). The one with the screw is not branded. The blue one with the spring and the decal says "SUPREME." Anyone know who (other than Blue-Point) used that brand name?
