Those funky pliers (bent thin nose gas & burner is the way I would describe them...) with the peeling cad or possibly light veneer of nickel plating turned out to be Wilde with a very early logo. See Pics 1 though 4.

I posted many more photos of the possibly TRUTH round shank deep DBEs (teaser Pic 5) in the DBE thread, and more of the Herbrand Van-Chrome combos (teaser Pic 6) in the Herbrand thread. See Index in Sticky on VB.
Those look like telephone pliers (Plomb 260 similar).

Yep, I should have known. There's a thread for every tool, just got to find it!
That one is under "Greene, Tweed" in the Index in the Sticky. There are other types of replaceable soft-face hammers, of course. Including rawhide. One type you just wet and jam in. There are little spikes forged in on the bottom of each cavity that help seat the roll-up. The action of using it keeps it lodged.

I finally managed to get to a couple of sales today and picked up some Craftsman USA goodness:

This little "Crown Top" 1/4" metric set is in very nice condition and very complete.

IMG_0783.jpg

The wrench set looks to be unused although the vinyl wrap is torn.

I also picked up a stud remover and brand-new 9/16" wrench.

I had three stops planned for the day, one of which as a massive farm estate sale about 40miles away. That was going to be my first stop, but I ended up driving past my second planned stop, an estate sale, where there was a parking spot right in front! So, I made that one first. Which was a good decision. Here is what I found there:

A tiny toolbox!

Which was a WWII SK homeowners box (I love these little boxes, so handy), a VACO magnetic protractor, an Armstrong box with three boring bars, and a Phillips #2 set:

I needed another ph2 like I need another hole in my head, but that was too cool to pass up. I am pretty sure that APEX made the driver, so no problems there. All of that cost me $10, which was almost half of the original price. I like this company, they specialize in getting things cleared out quick.

Then I headed to the farm sale, getting there around two hours after it started. Usually, that allows the line to dissipate and gives me time to look around. Not this time. Apparently, people showed up at midnight for a 9am sale. There was still a line to get in the actual house when I got there, though the outbuildings were accessible. And pretty picked over, as every antique/flea dealer in the PNW was there! I even recognized a couple of my clients. But anything I might have been interested in was already spoken for, and although there were more than a few interesting piles of what was taken as **** by many buyers, it wasn't appealing enough to me to dig through on the chance there was something in them. The only tools I found were some implement wrenches that were covered in rust and some '80s Craftsman misc. The antique bicycles that had caught my eye were spoken for in the first few minutes, digging through the shop only yielded an old Wisconson repair flyer, and other than that, not much of interest, as I don't really go for the horsy stuff, which there was a lot of. Oh well, as my dad used to say, if you don't look, you don't find.

The third sale I had planned was a total no show. They didn't put up an address, just fairly explicit directions, but it was hammering down rain, so I get the feeling they postponed.

But, over the week I did hit the Restores whenever I was close to one, and here is the gold I dug:

Duro sockets, Indestro speeder, Hinsdale socket and a Plomb driver. I think that was $5 total, something like that.

So... Learned Tool Professors, what do I have here? It looks like an ignition tool set but I’m not sure. The punch looking tool is inscribed with a Mayhew logo but it looks out of place. The rest could be cheap tools but I’m out of my wheelhouse.

JC,

Definitely an antique/vintage ignition set. There might be a few pieces that aren't (not sure about the wider tubular T-hande, for example - that actually looks carb to me), but all the wrenches are. Attached is an excerpt from a 1930's Bonney catalog. That's not a Bonney roll-up and those aren't Bonney wrenches you have, but it might help you identify them based on the general shape and size of the openings. Before ignition wrenches were standardized as miniature DOE wrenches with 15* x 60* or 15* x 75* angles and common openings, this is what was produced - wrenches that fit magnetoes and dynos etc made by particular ignition system mfgrs.

Only one sale that turned up anything. I paid $4.00 for this lot.

Fairmount 13/16 tubing wrench
Loc-Rite 22237 5/8 x 11/16 tubing wrench
Herbrand No. 194 drain plug wrench
Craftsman -VV- 11/32 combo
Barcalo "Barcalloy" 3/8 combo
P&C 75 punch
Plomb USA 1224 3/4 combo

I really like the Loc-Rite tubing wrenches. They don't damage the soft nuts because of their "off-corner" contact design.

The Herbrand drain plug wrench is quite stylish!

I pick up all the 11/32 wrenches I find because they were not included in most sets and that opening size is standard for #8 machine screw hex nuts.

After yesterday's posts, I couldn't help myself and went to the estate sale which was ongoing. The man of the house must have been a POW, as there was a flag from the American Ex-Prisoners of War, as well as a bunch of VFW memorabilia and a couple of POW books (see below). I'd have liked to get the one by LTC Nick Rowe, 5 Years to Freedom, but the cover was separated. Came away with this small haul:

-18" Crescent brand wrench, MFD in Jamestown, NY. 2-1/4" opening. Lightly marked by a PO with Cookie. Missed that at the sale.
- Behind the Barbed Wire, c. 1995. Written (and hand signed by) a Marine who was part of the Peiping garrison, captured by the Japanese in 1941.
- TM 8-244 Military Psychiatry, 1957
- TM 8-243 Neuropsychiatric Specialist, 1962
- Housewife, with Vietnam-era Combat Medical Badge
- Pair of OD cotton rifle slings, probably 50s-60s era.
- Windup alarm clock. Great if you want to get up at 0430, but the alarm adjuster is broken. Made in China, it's probably trash, unless I get really adventurous.
- Tie to wear to church for 4th of July...with the label still on it.
- Couple of organizer boxes. The big one will be for an electrolysis tank.

Nice patriotic haul, Steve. (And I appreciate your historically accurate militaria terminology, no matter how un-PC it is becoming...)

I have a huge tournament this weekend, so I can't get out. But here are some LEFT-BEHIND photos from this past week...

The antique tire changer (Pic 1) was cool, but way too expensive, and not really my style. Same with the Oakwood, but I snapped some shots (Pics 2 & 3) for the finners (BB!) in the crowd. The RR spike maul or "track punch" (Pic 4) was neat, too expensive, and also a little bewildering. I always associate the various 'WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES' markings (Pic 5) with OSHA (1970) and typically use it as a quick and easy way to distinguish modern tools from vintage (chisels and punches, for example), but it has a Woodings Verona Tool Works logo (Pic 6) on it. That is a very old striking tools mfgr here in NJ, and I didn't know they lasted much past WWII.

Nice looking '60 4-dr Bel Air, Lugz! I had one for more than 30 years before getting my current '60 2-dr Impala.

Town-wide yard sale here today, but I can't get the motivation to go run the traps. Maybe because said Impala is still in pieces in the garage after my 10-day LS swap has stretched to 3 months. I think I'll stay home and wrench this weekend. Good luck to the rest of you bargain hunters!

Hit an estate sale looking for a lawn trailer. It was sold. Instead found some lapidary machines and a short wave radio. Got all three for $125.

Finds from an estate sale I hit up yesterday.

Wright Tool 1/2 drive impact set (set 415?) $12.50
Knipex ear clamp pliers that I think people overlooked because of the jaws (see picture)65ed0c0aa81d474c499d6ed829821788.jpg- $3.50
Everything else was $1.50 each including the estwing hammer.

Well, after that suckage, I almost don't know what to say!

So, I wasn't going to go out today, but by force of habit, I check the Craigs listings, and wouldn't you know it, a local shop clear out estate sale. Family run. Now, family run sales are usually the ones were they look everything up on their phones and this sale was no different for large items. Too much was marked NFS so it was often a challenge to figure out was for sale and what wasn't. But, I managed to find a few goodies:

Two body files, one of which is marked New Britain, spares for them from Proto and Snap-on, Snap-on brake wrench, Penens 3/8s combo, Channellock wire strippers and a little metal box. What is in the box, you say?

Most of a Penens 3/8s socket set, in a Duro box!

And when I got home, this was waiting for me:

A Palmgren 150 milling attachment. A perfect size for my little lathe, allowing me to do a little light milling.

Hit a little shop called Old School Flea market in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. Pulled these from the $1 a wrench bucket and an old flat craftsman screwdriver.

Funny how the universe works.

Right after congratulating jrg on his Wilton score two hours ago, I flipped over to Facebook Marketplace for a quick scan of the Tools category before I returned to working on the Impala. I do this all the time, and rarely find anything that gets my attention.

Today must be a rare day. I swiped down by one page, and see this thumbnailed ad:

4e994ba96034c7d83b3cf2431e2f4aec.jpg

The ad was 4 minutes old. Having just seen jrg's find, I knew exactly what I was looking at. I jumped on Messenger, made contact with the seller and beat feet over there.

It's a Wilton 9400 bullet with the 4" jaws and swivel base. The jaw screw turns smoothly and the jaws and anvil pad are crusty but not abused--not bad for a vise made in 1957! I gladly paid their asking price of $37.

There's a sticker that was under a thin layer of paint that I can't quite make out. If no one here recognizes it, I'll repost over on the mega vise thread.

EDIT: Nevermind, got it! It's what's left of the Five Year Warranty sticker from Wilton.
