I wasn't going to head out today, as my main reason for going out on Fridays is with my wife working from home its a good excuse to get out of her hair, but she was out of town last night. I did see an ad of Craigs listing some old tools and antiques so I figured what the heck. Not much of interest in the old tools, but I did find this Adirondack chair for less than the wood would cost to make one, so I picked that up.

And when on my way back, I spotted a TOO listing tools! Stopped in, and it was the kids liquidating dads machine shop. Much of what was for sale was either something I already had, or something way past my machining needs, but I did manage to find somethings

An unused Proto spinner, P&C ratchet and a Mitutoyo dividing head on a Starrett rule.

Not a bad afternoon for $20.

timo You will get great use out of the Grizzly band saw! And the price was right.

Nice find bmw especially @ $20! What wood was used to make the Adirondack chair?

Sadly, the book industry has been dying for decades.

Amen.
My second real job (the first lasted barely a year) was managing a retail bookstore. I only left that because I realized I was never going to make enough to raise a family.
I find it sadly amusing how many people scorn books because they don’t ding and vibrate to break your focus every few seconds. And ironic how our culture trusts our most sensitive information and precious memorials to the most vulnerable and volatile electomagnetic media, while relegating paper and ink - which can last for thousands of years - to the most transient purposes.

No estate sales worth going to today but late yesterday a vise popped up on CL. I called the fellow who I had talked to a few weeks back about a 4.5" Rock Island Birtman vise. Anyway, I made arrangements to make the drive this morning to go look at another vise he was selling. Brought it home and have started cleaning it up. I noticed right off that the screws on the front spindle had a nut on each of them. It didn't hit me that the front washer is missing. Hopefully, that isn't a high dollar item from Wilton (but likely it is). It should clean up nice. I'm actually gonna paint this one. Will be my first painted vise.

TX--That looks like the same model I picked up last week and have yet to identify. Mine has S2 forged on the right side of the dynamic but I can't reconcile that with a Wilton model number. What model is yours?

Took a trip down south today to look at a collection of ¾ dr sockets. I understood that they were all Williams H-12xx series, but it turned out that only 1/3 of the 15 sockets were Williams.
Williams: H-1264; 60; 56; 54 & 46
The rest included:
3 Proto—5554A & two 5546s. The first is older and in much better shape.
2 Thorsen “Sunrise” logo—1244 & 1240
1 each of:
Snap-on—LDH 522
S-K—47158
Hinsdale—SL44 (chrome flaking badly)
Blackhawk—60028
Great Neck (Taiwan)
The 3/4dr breaker bar is a Proto 5668
$60 for all and the Kennedy Kits carry tray.

02 Oct 20-1a.jpg02 Oct 20-1b.jpg02 Oct 20-1c.jpg

For an additional $10 I found:
Simplex 1½ x 12 bottle jack (30 minutes of wire brushing brought out the oxidized red paint)
Proto Pro 276 slip joint pliers
Champion DeArment No. 410 Channel Lock (first patent date)
Three Vlchek wrenches: WBH4648, WBH2022, & W0608

02 Oct 20-2a.jpg02 Oct 20-2b.jpg02 Oct 20-2c.jpg

On a Gee-Whiz note, the ¾ drive sliding T was an S-K 47153. I cannot imagine the strength required or the length of the cheater bar used to snap off the business end of that big piece of steel. The lady running the sale threw it in for free so I could show the GJ members.

Don't get me started! As someone whose identity has been strongly formed as a long-time reader and writer (some of the guys on here who shall remain nameless have been subjected to some of my still unpublished fiction...!), it is very frustrating. With apologies to the Buggles, video has killed much more than just the radio star. Film has its place, of course, but you simply and indisputably cannot film what goes on in a human brain when it reads a couple sentences that are relaying actuality, metaphor, analogy, simile, and creative adjectives - at the same time. The written word invokes imagery and meanings that travel back and forth through places and time that defy visualization. All happening between the page and your mind. Compounding that issue is the relegation of words to mediums with minimum characters, promoting instantaneous drivel versus more meditative thoughts.

On a lighter note... my 43rd trip to a flea market (Lugz 2020_43) yielded a W.C. Toles No. 20 "Fast-Acting Vise" (meaning, it has a quarter-turn stop and quick-release screw), patented in 1894, but not for that, for the two guide rods, providing the pattern for every wood-working vise that has ever followed to this day. The tiny DOE wrench is a PENENS that I need. The tappet wrench is one of those Lectrolite's with the mysterious compositional content markings (.05 Chromium, .05 Vanadium). Not sure if it's a size I have yet or not. Gotta check. Same with the Circle-NB socket. Not sure I need it or not for the set I have.

So much for not going out [emoji23] great work, especially at those prices! That spinner is a great find

Found this old 6 drawer Union toolbox for $20. It's complete and solid except for the front cover but that'll be easy to reproduce. I'll set it alongside it's bigger brother when it's done.

I read a lot. I prefer books, but with he arthritis in my hands and thumbs, an Ipad is easier to hold. So with the modern times, does come some advantages.

EXTREMELY Slow day -

I picked up 3 NOS Rainbird pop up heads for the small hidden sprayer heads (not the actual Rainbird type of sprinkler head) - No pics

And a canoe or rubber raft paddle for a buck:

S-K customer service might replace the broken 3/4” drive sliding tee at no charge. Certainly worth an email.
-Don

That might be interesting, but how would I start the explanation?

1. Hi, I'm currently the reigning Mr. Universe. Some people say I don't know my own strength, but I didn't think your 3/4 drive sliding T would snap off in my hand like that.

2. Hi, since there was no warning label that I shouldn't use a ten foot cheater bar on your 3/4 drive sliding T, is it possible for you to send me a new one? Oh and include a warning label 'cuz I forget easy.

I'm interested to hear how some of the members have been successful requesting replacements and also what reasons were denied.

Thanks!

If part of your concern is a guilty conscience (i.e., you didn't personally break it...), you might find the use of passive voice, 3rd person point-of-view, and vagueness to be more helpful than a falsely confessional approach.

3. "The drive stud on this S-K 47153 3/4-inch square drive sliding tee head snapped clean off in the process of loosening a stuck fastener. I've never seen anything like it before. I'd like to get a replacement."

Nothing about that statement isn't true. And you won't have to say 10 Our Fathers and 3 Hail Marys!

Estate Sale today was all about art. Not that I'm against art. As a matter of fact I love art and we buy art whenever SWMBO or I sees something we like. But there was some interesting book items which will likely find their way on fleabay....
attachment.php
1969 baseball yearbook that features everyone from Lolich to McLain...., 1961 copy of Time magazine featuring Alan Shepard, circa 1930 colored map of Courses of the Rhine, and a 4 LP (that's records for you youngins') of Rayond Massey reading Abraham Lincoln speeches. All for $6. Oh and SWMBO had to have this bronzed relief, like here parents used to have...

Kraeuter 1973-7 pliers
Diamalloy SN57 4" needlenose
Reese/US marked padlock, w/key
P&C 7/8" socket, 1/2" dr.
Eagle oiler (1/2” too narrow for WW2 standard)
Vaco stubby screwdriver
Flat tip screwdriver
Small brad/nail puller
SK-Wayne chrome punch
WW2 vintage US GI blanket

I've been searching my whole adult life for this. The elusive Tupperware Lettuce Crisper! My mom had one when I was growing up. Nothing I have ever seen or used keeps lettuce fresh as long. I've never been able to bring myself to pay the exorbitant fee for a new one. Today is my lucky day, a day which will live in infamy. I walked into an estate sale kitchen and there it was, waiting to come home with yours truly. Today is a good day. I found a few other things but all pale in comparison to this Holy Grail of plastic products. $5PXL_20201004_001033892.jpgPXL_20201004_001042746.jpeg

A very nice day, going to a few garage sales, Targets of opportunities and estate sales. First stop was a woman clearing out her fathers shop, and she had advertised it a few weeks a ago and I missed it so that was my first stop. I seems it was hit pretty hard earlier, but I found a few good things:

P&C 1/2 ratchet, MAC 3/8s deep socket and an SK box with mics. screwdrivers and a Crestoloy adjustable. $3

Next I drove out to an estate sale for its 1/2 day.

Snap-on crows foot and flare combo, SK 1-1/4 socket, two Challenger sockets, a Robertson drive hex drive, and a non-working Klien MM100. Which only needed a new battery! $3.50

Third stop advertised tools (and a '65 Corvair convertible!) but the only interesting thing I found were a set of MinuteMan Broaches. $3

After all that, I found a TOO of an estate sale, which had vintage tools, but nothing I was interested in. But I found an old book on chess (no pic) and this:

A nice drawing of a sailboat, which is nice since we are talking about art. $5.

And when I got home, I found a package for me. Unwrapping it, I found this:

A 1912 travelouge about the house drawn canal boats in England.

A very nice day!

That is very similar to the email I sent regarding the broken drive on my long 1/2” drive ratchet. They didn’t ask any questions and took care of it immediately.

I only got some license plates that’s it I found some tools but the guy wanted outrageous prices for his stuff like I seen a deep Craftsman 11/16 1/2 drive socket he said $5 and I said $5? He said yeah that’s an excellent price considering how rare and good Craftsman is now. And I didn’t even bother to ask about the rest of the stuff. Most of the sales in my area didn’t happen because it’s cold out.

Timed it right and was first to respond to this post for a free drill press and broken band saw. The drill press while random Taiwan harbor freight grade works perfectly.

I’ve wanted a bandsaw for awhile for my garage. The guy said one day this one would no longer tension the blade and they pushed it aside and bought a new one. It’s a Grizzly G0555 which luckily is still in production. All it needed was a $5 tensioning bolt and $1 square nut. I threw some new tires at it for the heck of it and of course a new blade. All things aside, they are offshore but this is a seriously quality piece and the fact that they fully support their products selling individual hardware not entire assemblies in this day and age is fantastic.

Thanks gents! I sent them an email based upon Lugz's suggested verbiage. I'll report the results.

Friday I went to several sales. At the first, I bought the bucket of tie down straps for $5.00. I always need straps, since I have three vehicles that haul stuff, plus strapping things to pallets and such. Shown in last photo.

The next several sales were busts, mostly stuff I was not interested in, and also a few items of slight interest that were either overpriced, or bundled with imported junk. I then hit a couple of sales that had a few items I bought, including a Barcalo 5/8 x 3/4 DOE, Craftsman G2 3/8 dr. deep sockets in 10, 12, and 15mm, a Crescent 1/4 nut driver, a no-name 10mm nut driver, and three cookbooks for my daughter. No photos of these.

I finally found a sale that had things of interest. It was an 84 year-old retired machinist who was downsizing. I had been to an earlier sale there that was fruitful, and he had added more items this time. There was not a crowd, perhaps because it was 11am before I got there, so we had a chance to visit. He was pushing me to buy things I didn't need, and it got to be somewhat of a game between us. One item he pushed that I wasn't interested in was a tub of "junk" from household repairs. I finally gave in and looked at it for $4.00. It is shown in photo #1.

Photo #2 are the "highlights."
Stanley Screwdriver
Craftsman 11/32 nut driver
COOLERATOR ice pick "Fergus County Creamery Phone 369"
11/32 Whitney Punch from a heavy-duty set
Craftsman -V- 3/8 drive extensions in 3" and 6"
Action 3/8 drive 5" extension
unmarked cold chisel that seems to be good quality
Utica 507 pliers
Bergman 7" tin snips
Wiss Inlaid 8" scissors

Photo #3 is the less interesting stuff:
1/2" Grobet round rasp
Starrett Bimetal 32-tooth hacksaw blade in good condition
?? perhaps a slot cutter? Vaguely familiar.
Xcelite Phillips #1 screwdriver
Cal Van 456 flexible Phillips driver (GM tune-up tool?)
2 new carpenter pencils
2 3/8" NC adjustable feet
2 straps with holes
hanging hook (I have a use for this)
1/2 square drive to 1/4 hex drive adapter for my impact driver
7/32" belt punch
1/4" square drive screwdriver bit
Tapered reamer
2 broom hangers

Photo #4 shows the dregs from the tub. More useable items, plumbing and electrical, so even this was worth $4.00!

I'll show the other items I bought there in the next post.

I found a number of items at the "downsizing" sale mentioned above. All the items listed, including the $4.00 tray of stuff in the previous post came to $50.00.

Craftsman nut drivers, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 11/32, and 3/8
Tap handle
Harness snap
6 tie down rings (made in USA). These were the most expensive item.
Imperial tube bender 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4. This is cute!
Craftsman 8-point socket set 1/4 to 3/4 plus a 13/16 spark plug socket
Another 1/2 square drive to 1/4 hex drive adapter
Snap-On combos in 7, 8, 10, and 13mm
24" pry bar
Indestro Super 8099 1/2 dr. 100 ft.lb. torque wrench
Proto 5449 ratchet
New Britain NS-57 1/2 dr. Breaker Bar
Plomb LA 2015 brake pliers
Plomb USA 215 brake pliers

Oh, it wasn't hard for BlueBomber to raise the IQ bar from 2018 to 2019, but LS brings a creative, sly, diverse, challenging, MENSA class mentality to hosting!
This is what you'd expect to hear from someone who's a world-class self-deprecating bar-raiser himself....

But I do agree with the assessment of LS' hosting performance. The GJGS thread is a Master Class in many things from our many contributors, and our host is a strong contributor!

And it would be hard to argue that there's ever been a stranger, more challenging year!

I can't get out today, but here are a few photos of my cleaned-up finds from yesterday morning. More on the Mega Vise thread, the DOE wrenches thread, and my PENENS kit thread.

bmw, nice book, but I didn't know they pulled canal boats in England with houses!

No, no, no. Drawn (with a pencil), not pulled. Check the context clues: “We’re talking about art.” Plus, you must think he meant a travelogue, instead of a travelodge (on the cover).
We must, therefore, conclude that the canal boat illustrations are drawn from a house (artist presumably under TB quarrantine), not by a house.

Sorry, bmwrd0, but sometimes a single keystroke is as entertaining as a whole story.

On another note, there is one of those .05 wrenches headed my way with some other things. I didn’t know the brand until your post. I don’t collect Lectrolite, so if it interests you.

Heh. No worries, my wife had, while making her rounds, picked me up a couple bottles of very nice local beer. So my editing skills were a little off.
