Nice! My back hurts just looking at it, but very nice. That will be useful.

Yes. New Britain/None Better
Thanks and it does a bit today. I thought I was good enough to most of it by myself but ended up getting some help setting the upper 2.
You killed it this week by the way.

Here's that flat, oblong oiler cleaned up from Thursday's finds. Anybody ever seen one before? Anybody know the application? It's an odd shape, and the spout gets pushed inside the vessel. More pics on 'Oilers' thread.

That's Dad's warrant officer-era pea coat...[ ]...Found this patch in Dad's mancave computer room. I don't think this would be allowed in today's Navy...may not have been back then either!
Does the pea coat fit you? I have my dad's from WWII but I am much bigger than him. And what are the initials to the left and the right? The JFK was a carrier, wasn't it? Funny, our dads were both mariners, but I went ground-pounder and you went zoomie! :)

So, I went deep into Smokeshow and Rileysan territory this AM, hitting a two tool sales and two estates sales. The first sale turned out to be a bust, sadly as it was the furthest away, but the next one was good, a mess of vintage stuff at 50% off marked prices. And I wished I got there yesterday! Here is what I picked up for $10

Highlights include P&C, Plomb, Williams and Herbrand wrenches, a Starrett punch holder, SK and an unmarked flex 1/4 spinners, Hinsdale 9/32 spinner and some envelopes of machine screws and nuts. Oh, what is that little box, you ask?

A partial Hinsdale 9/32 set.

And here is the metal box everything was in

P&C 1/2 socket box. Nothing that goes with it was in that mess, but no matter, I will have it filled in no time.

Next stop as another estate sale in the general neighborhood, but there was a line to get in at noon on the second day, so I passed. It didn't look that good.

Final stop was a tool sale, and while the guy had some very nice stuff and knew his tools, he was a bit pricey. But I still managed to find some things:

A Brown and Sharp 6" tri-square, complete Union 10-24 tap set (a size I use a bit of) and the smallest T&D set I have ever seen. Like size 1 and such. I don't know if I will ever use it, but even though it was a little bit pricy I figured what the heck, I will probably never see another one. I spent $20 for all of that.

Altogether, it was a nice day.

Pretty good weekend, need to unload some stuff, and go back and get more tomorrow. Probably the best purchase was a Baileigh RM10 tube roller for $300

Columbian 604 1/2 in nice shape for $50 bucks

PVC stock rack $50 with stuff in it

Stainless Shelf $5

This came today too. Frobana sole stitching machine. Can anyone tell me anything about it? We can't figure out what or why something is electrified, maybe to heat the platen to help with the glue? Or heat the glue for the thread? Anyway, $50 delivered.

Dang, that was some good work for $20. I am most jealous of the p&c box and associated tools!

That’s a good deal of things you gathered there, Bomber.

Good Luck. I filled up the bed if my truck after my dad passed, and sorted lots of it before I even put it in the truck. Took months to get it put away. And I had much less to go thru. I grabbed sentimental stuff, made it harder to "store" vs display.

BB, you can sure pack a trailer. The only items I recognized from the teaser post were the bandsaw and the router table. Sooo much more!

Thanks, gents. My Dad was a kind man who enjoyed helping out neighbors, friends, and strangers. His treasury of retained objects got a little messy towards the end, as Parkinson's slowly took away his ability to move around and keep it organized. However, it was never a "hoarding" situation.

We had to do the same for my Grandma. Grandpa died in '00 and she was left with a mountain of cash to "run" the golf course they owned since the 60's but the economy and her inability to manage a business let her piss through over $3M in 18 years. God smiled down and a developer offered her ~ double market value for everything to turn it into a distribution hub for a big supermarket. The good thing is "broom clean" wasn't ever expected. The bad, all the assets of the GC needed to be liquidated which was fortunately auctioned as advertising individual pieces would have taken forever. Then came the house and three outbuildings, that was the real nightmare. She build a 3000sqft+ ranch with tons of storage so of course she wanted to take everything she hoarded over the past almost 60 years with her. Everyone took turns picking through her stuff that she absolutely couldn't and shouldn't be using, that resulted in no family animosity luckily. Lots and lots of stuff got left behind, but again, it was known by both parties that was going to happen. The house was knocked down and the trees cut and that was the end. She was completely moved into her new digs just after Thanksgiving last year, now she's suffering with memory loss that's going to put her in a nursing home within the next 6 months and we'll get to do it all over again.

Wow, what a journey...and it's not over yet! Best of luck to you and your family, and I hope everyone continues to works together without animosity this next time. My Mom turns 72 this year and is still going strong, despite a knee replacement, although she is slowing down just a bit. She remains one of the few humans who routinely out-strides me in normal walking around. Here she is in the parking lot of a Giant just a few days ago getting ahead of me!

You know, I haven't tried it on yet, although the size on the tag is pretty close to me. I actually was hoping my mariner daughter would want it. It definitely wouldn't fit my son.

I actually had ROTC scholarships from both the Navy and the Air Force, and my Navy Dad said "Go Air Force--they treat their people better." :)

During the clean out, I plucked this unassuming thermometer off of Dad's workshop wall without a second glance until this morning. When I went to hang it up in my own chilly garage, I flipped it over.

My Dad's Dad worked for the United Fruit Company in Baltimore and one of his jobs was checking temperatures of the banana shipments that came up from South & Central America. Dad used to describe the jar of mercury Grandpa kept at home from all the broken thermometers and how they used to play with it with their bare hands....!

Anyway, I can't know for sure that this particular thermometer came from my Grandpa or if Dad picked it up somewhere else along the way..but it will still bring back family memories hanging in my shop, the same way it probably did for him.be068215c63fe26621766e69e198f209.jpg2630bb9c950e347fe71f0b7595c87007.jpg

BB,

That's pretty cool! I also have a lot of stuff from my Dad that I continue to use all the time. One example is a really nice Stanley torpedo level that I always use when hanging artwork....

Last night someone posted these socket sets on FB Market. I happen to be the first responder it seems and made a deal for $40. When I met the seller today he said he got at least 50 other messages after we made the deal. Early bird gets the worm! Well in this case, not early AM just early after posting :)

There are roughly 5 socket sets.

SK Tools socket sets in 1/4"(7pcs), 3/8"(8pcs) and 1/2"(12pcs, 7/16-1 1/4)
Craftsman (no series?) 3/8" standard and deep
SK and Husky USA 3/8" ratchets
Alot of 3/8 extensions. A mix of SnapOn, Craftsman and Indestro.
The little 1/4" Craftsman breaker bar is an early model. =V=, chrome tang, T handle bar hole through the side.
Bonney 1-1-1/6 socket is interesting. I haven't seen one socket cover two sizes before.

The seller said he bought the Craftsman sets in the 80s and his dad bought the SK sets in the 70s. The sad part is he tossed all the green metal boxes a few years ago and put the sockets on these organizers. Said they were in good shape too. He did say if he is mistaken and runs across them he'll let me know. Nice he gave me the tool tray and a handful of socket organizers too.

Any idea why the Craftsman sets have no Series marker? In the 80s they would likely be -V-. Just an accident on the day they were made? See the last two pictures for both sides of the sockets.

Decent haul. Believe it or not, I've never been there on a Sunday. Or a Saturday or Friday. Only Thursdays. How many tables were being used in the back lot area? Or along the side behind the buildings?

I haven't been to Columbus in recent years but I remember almost always going on Sunday. I recall Saturday being more new stuff and Sunday being more used/garage sale type stuff.

What is Thursday labeled as? I tried to confirm what I remembered but the website doesn't say one day is for anything specific. All days seem the same according to their website.

I think Sunday is the big day for anything used. All the tables between the back driveway and the building were full. The back lot was basically full too.

Bluebomber,
There is a really good podcast on the United Fruit Company on the NPR series Throughline called "There will be Banannas". I just spent 20hrs on the road listening to podcasts.

I don't know, but it's known for antiques and vintage stuff. All the antiques and vintage people from Collingwood (Fridays and Sundays) and Lambertville (Sundays) go to Columbus on Thursdays. There's a lot of other stuff on the lane behind the buildings and around the U, and inside the U, too, but not so much in the back lot.

All the tables between the back driveway and the building were full. The back lot was basically full too.
Nice.

End of season yard sale.
Garage was jam packed with stuff that myself & another fella were making piles as fast as we could. ha!
There was a roll up dumpster next to the house & they wanted it empty.
Here are a few highlights at $2.00 each.
Pexto Hammer
SK Ratchet
Two Eagle Oilers. Brass 66 and Blue 58.
Anyone know is this the same Eagle that makes safety gas cans?

Nice birds eye view. I had to look at it a minute to visualize everything from the ground. I've been through it all many times. Mainly just shopped outdoors. For some years I would go inside to the paintball store. VM68. The inside pizza wasn't great but ate there some too.

Answered a facebook marketplace for this grinder for $10. I wound up paying $15 for everything in the picture. A very nice lady was trying to clean out her parents estate so the house would sell. I helped her with some descriptions and prices of other items that should bring good money but she mostly just wanted it to be over.

Does the pea coat fit you? I have my dad's from WWII but I am much bigger than him. And what are the initials to the left and the right? The JFK was a carrier, wasn't it? Funny, our dads were both mariners, but I went ground-pounder and you went zoomie! :)

Found it!

BPDSMS: Base Point Defense Surface Missile System

The system shot Sea Sparrow missiles out of a launcher. Makes sense, as Dad was a fire control officer, known to many of his peers as "Gunner". The Kennedy was his first ship. And yes, "Big John" was an aircraft carrier.

Here's a link to a missile shot:

With the exception of the blue Huot top box and the Lyon 5 drawer cabinet , all this stuff was free. Older gentleman was moving and just wanted to get rid of the stuff.

Huot red bottom box
Lyon cabinet with a steel surface plate for the top (not pictured)
Cast iron park bench legs
Akro Mills small parts drawers

There are a bunch of smalls and another nice 24" locking steel cabinet (1 door two shelves) but apparently I forgot to take a picture of it.

The original ad he has was for two 24" x 8' benchtops he was giving away in my town, and it turned out they were bowling alley, but another guy contacted him first and he held them for him, unfortunately. I HATE second place!

File this one under "even a blind squirrel finds a nut"... Saw this lot on CL this morning and I just happened to be the first to call about this Plomb 9990 box with assorted contents. Seller said it had sat in an autobody shop from the 1950s. Mix of Plomb, Proto, Bonney, Williams, and some more recent Taiwan and Chinese made pieces. It's got a nice coating of filler dust over everything so it will take some time to sort.

Wow I really like that! I have one similar (in much worse shape) buried in my semi trailer from moving. Someday I will have a shop to unload into. Does yours have the owners plaque on top?
