Dud, I'm confused by Pic #1 - is there two boxes, or is that a merged photo?

That is about the sixth or so of that box we have seen surface. I have two and we have two possible company names, but I think its "Butler":

one of mine is brown in color, Almost certainly factory - Possibly Butler? but no other examples are so marked? - See: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6155999&postcount=6572

Also found, one marked Southern /stove works, QUALITY TIN~TOP METAL PRODUCTS Richmond virginia,
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8041471&postcount=1532

And WRT the push drills, you certainly have other photos that need flattening!

Cool Chair! I'm not a cane bottom fan, but that one is cool.

Dud, on the oil/kerosene lamp (Confirmed) I'll need to dig out my notes but that is a gravity feed oil lamp and I have one of the most ornate versions (made I believe in partnership with Tiffany of lampshade fame... Tiffany apparently made the shades even for the electric lamps, and had other companies make the actual lamps...)

Once in a while a guy finds a 'honey hole'. Like Old Radar, I found one last week.
An estate sale, I had visited on Sunday, but didn't buy much. I asked about tools or other mechanical items like vises, and was told to come back at noon the next day. They had a pile of stuff in the basement that they did not have the time or energy to drag up the stairs. I told them I would be there..
When I returned, I was shown into the basement workshop, and handed a roll of blue painters tape. I was to put a short piece of tape on each item I'd like.
The family member told me that they had to clean out the house for it to be sold. Everything in the basement had to go. The workbenches could stay or be sold.. Everything else had to go.
The deceased collected vises, not many big ones, but some interesting ones.
The hand tools were unfortunately junk stuff. No good tool boxes or power tools.
But I took almost every vise in the basement. I did leave a cheap HF or ? vise that was bolted to a workbench.

The odd side-mainscrew vise does not have any names or numbers. The Emmet vise has had some use. The Stanley clamp vises have original paint, and the bolt down 1-1/4" Jersey/Stanley jeweler's vise is a nickeled one, my first nickel plated vise.
An Athol swivel 2-1/2" vise in very nice condition. Several small 1" clamp on vises. An odd swivel and tilt wood working vise.

All in all a real find. The prices were very low. Too low actually and I added more to the money I paid, telling them that their prices were low and I thought I ought to add some more to the price they asked..

PierceA

Wow! You ****! Awesome bunch of vises. 976 is a great user, a 975 1/2 is one of my favorites. Emmert is awesome too.

.

Thanks Outlaw - the info on the boxes is helpful. there are actually two boxes, one black and one brown. The paint is so bad on they that I am not sure if either one is original - lots of runs and drips - but at the same time it could be - inside matches, no hint of previous paint. Maybe the company was not known for their paint jobs!

I also posted a kerosene lamp (maybe?) that I would love to get your take on. Another of those things that could not stay behind - I needed to know more about it. - edit - saw your post. Thanks - I would love to see your example.

Even before this crazy quarantine... I don't go to many movies, but I can't tell you how many times I have told myself... I will buy that [chair/item] for [$4/whatever - don't tell Mrs Duddly]. That is several hours of great entertainment / research / cleaning / finishing / learning!! How can something as cold as steel tools have so much "warmth"??

Dud, my two boxes are also black and brown. Hmmm.

The lamp research may take me a bit. The thread I made on the Coleman Forum was apparently purged in a space saving spree...

[QUOTE SNIP

So it's far more basic that the psychoanalysis shows. It's an instinct. I know "science" likes to claim that man has had instinct bred out of him. I think its there; we just don't recognize it, as we over-analyze so much. It (analysis) is both our strength, and our weakness...

With that, I'm gearing up for another hunt! :3gears:[/QUOTE]

Around here we call it the junk gene

Here is an old pic of mine however, - mine had been covered to electric and part of the burner was trimmed on top; that may have messed it up for conversion back...

And the manufacturer was Manhattan; the markings should be on the burner:

Old Radar, I certainly hope you're bringing a bigger truck today. If you leave anything behind, the masses here will want your head on a spit!

Speaking of hunting... Outlaw, as I read that article, I thought the exact same thing, where's the Hunter / Gatherer reference??? I'd hate to think about how much money was spent just to run the MRI for that "research" project, just to make some Beanie Babies collectors feel better about justifying their passion...

I keep checking back to see if Old Radar brings back a mess of 1/4” ratchets!

Ho hum trip to the flea for me this morning. Brought back a little parts cabinet and a dual marked caulking iron.

LS, your image link is not showing?

Hmm, that’s a bummer. I took the “s” out of “https” now. Dunno if it will help. But I am glad it was you who responded. I scavenged some pics from the interweb to test the hypothesis about eye position indicating role as predator or prey. I think it is a good rule-of-thumb.
But I think the terms better describe the usual relationship between two species (or individuals), than a dietary role in the food “chain.” A sea lion preys on fish, but a shark or orca preys on sea lions.
I get what you’re saying about “hunt” applying to more than killing for meat. Most primates eat a variety of foods (including insects and small animals), usually heavy on leaves or fruits, but particularly with fruit, it does take some “hunting” to fill a belly. (And color vision that spotlights yellow-to-red - the colors of ripe fruit - which many actual predators lack.)
When you stated that animals are either predator or prey, I thought of scavengers (dogs, vultures, crabs), which is the classification I would choose as most descriptive for humanity.
Predators eat what they hunt, often when it is still writhing in protest. Humans don’t do that. We eat things that are good and dead, like respectable scavengers. Further, we eat and drink things that are decayed. Cheese, pickles, bread, wine, beer...salami...tofu...kiviaq. I am a hunter, but a predator? I feel like I lack the claws, the teeth, the agility to make such a claim.

PS, I totally agree that instict has NOT been bred out of us. I’d argue that 90% of our behavior is instinctual, 10% socially learned. And our big fat brain is there to connect the two.

OMG, Lugz! I saw that exact same model of vise on the first table at Jake’s this morning!
What a koinkydink that would've been. This one was too cheap to pass up and, after cleaning and further inspection, it's marked "Hilger & Sons". The only other examples I can find of tools marked the same are dividers (mike_paxton) and a stake anvil (PWRStroke_smoke) posted right here in 2015 and 2017. I am really digging it. Crude, but attractive.

I like those pseudo BS vises! Nice find Lugz!
Thanks. Yeah, they are neat, quick and simple to use like a leg vise, or a hand vise, but clamping like a bench vise. And the sharp prongs on this one make sure that when it grabs a bench, it doesn't let go. I posted a lot more photos on the Mother Vise thread.

LOL, Outlaw!
I envisioned a similar bison-eating scene from the Revenant as a possible refutation of my argument, but in both, the bison is dead - raw, still warm, but dead.
And the advantage of the DWW scene is, it SHOWS the social learning in Dunbar’s face. No-one tears the beating heart from an animal to eat first by instinct. Not even animal predators. It’s a social learning.
Or do you think that’s a piece of liver? Still learned.

According to the Practical Machinist site, Hilger & Sons preceded Weibusch & Hilger, a huge importer of tools from Germany at the turn of the previous century (1900) and into the 1930's. The blacksmith-type bench vise I just found may have been made in Germany in the mid- to late 1800's.

It's supposed to be liver but I saw something that said the prop was cranberry jelly.

I think I'd rather go for the raw liver...

Do you loathe the can-o-jelly or the slime-with-chunks more?
I would rather eat cranberries by themselves.
I make a delightful gravy from giblets and drippings every year, then watch both my mother and my wife smear cran-goo all over their turkey. More gravy for me, I suppose.

After checking Craigslist and estatesales.org on Thursday and Friday I decided there were no local sales of interest. We spent Halloween with the kids and grandkids so no Saturday sales. I did a quick check this morning and saw a tool heavy sale that started yesterday. I figured that nothing of value would still be available but the sale was only about 5 minutes away so we checked it out. There were still quite a few tools to pick from and I was especially excited to find some crossbars that are always missing from my sets. From top to bottom the punches are Vlchek, Crescent, Blue Point and Plomb. The toolbox tray is from a Kennedy carpenters box.

Unpossible, as we all know cranberry jelly is shaped like the can it comes in.

Thank goodness there is someone on here who hates cranberries as much as I do [emoji23] I loathe cranberry sauce.

A bunch of philistines.

My grand dad on my moms side always made cranberry preserves for T-day... I NEVER liked it. just not my thing. My mom on the other hand took over the tradition... She still brings it and a few have some, but other than a few years ago when I tried a little on the side just to verify. Not me.

SWMBO had the Cranberry Jello tradition. Again not my thing and less so for Jello! The closest I get to Jello is chocolate pudding. Her brother was the driver for that, as it was his favorite. Since they stopped coming to T-day here, it stopped, and even SWMBO can live without it!

Well I found out what my gravity fed students lamp was SUPPOSED to look like. Thanks Outlaw for getting me on course.

I think it is too far gone to go in the pristine direction... maybe I polish it down to brass and copper. Oh well, I will set it aside and think on it for a while.

Dud, am I glimpsing a set screw on the far side of the lower "mast" fitting? If so these could be adjusted for height.

If yours is frozen, be careful! (ask me how I know)

If that's nickle, I'd give oven cleaner/lye and fine steel wool a shot. We have had amazing results with that on old nickle plated Coleman founts.

They make two levels of oven cleaner these days, the "low odor" stuff is useless...

DO wear heavy rubber gloves and other protective gear, and do this outside! its whiff!

Ditto on all of that. I don't mind cranberry muffins or cranberry bread, but that's the extent of it. My family loves the canned jelly version, my wife's family has some homemade recipes using whole cranberries that are all just awful. I eat neither.

I can eat cranberry no problem, it’s the weird holiday slime and goop. Craisins don’t make me want to harf but the cranberry sauce is gross in savory things. I’m with you on the gray! Put savory thing on savory things!

That is funny[emoji23] I am wanting to see old radar and his haul as well! I sent him a pm about being interested in something he found yesterday but so far nothing. I am sure he probably made out like a bandit [emoji23]

Ha-ha! Yes, I probably wasted the extra hour we got today on a side-bar to a side-bar.
[slaps self]

WELCOME to NOVEMBRRR!
We had a sudden drop in temperature here in PA to close out October, but the distributon of low-pressure pockets was remarkably steady.

Pelletman and bmwrd0 led with four ***** each.
WNYflyer, dkroth, b.well, ugotd8, oakpark, OldRadar PierceA drew three ***** each.
TOTO, Arne73, misterbill, 406Rich and Catfishdan drew two ***** each.
Davefr, timoboy, jbboks, seber, Galaxyrat, Cruzan, 3baygarage, Smokeshow, Outlawmws, madison069 and LesserSon (C’est moi) drew one **** each.

I present these numbers without any suggestion that they overwrite your own impressions, but rather, to show that despite challenging complexities, the deals are still out there. The year is 83.56% down, with 16.44% to go; let’s keep pressing the cider right out of those windfalls!

You guys are great. Love the camaraderie. My favorite price is free, and I haven't caught the bug to chase stuff out of garage sales, but I'm always amazed at what you come up with. Especially the old tools!

Someone asked about the big wrench pictured here. It is a Bonney wrench with a Mack logo on it in the center. I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone and take some pictures of the early socket sets too. I don't have $2 each in all of these things. They all came in a big pile of stuff. I would say I have $20 in the Ridgid pipe die set 1" 1.5" and 2" and the die stock handle. The die cart came in a lot of stuff too. I would figure it for $20. It needs work on the cylinder. Not sure if I am going to do it or just send it along as is. Also picked up the two drill indexes for $20, not really a fabulous deal but I like the cast one and if it weren't for this place I probably wouldn't have known they existed. Best thing I found in a long time was this Oilzum snow pusher though

Or unloading and categorizing everything [emoji15]he sure cleaned up well yesterday!

Okay, Okay! I did take some time to clean up a couple of the items. Plus, Ms. Radar turns into the dragon lady when I spend the whole weekend on tools.

As noted earlier, tin medic and I were 1 & 2 in the door--and it's a good thing I signed us up on Friday. Here's the day's catch--$30 for everything:

Ratchets, top to bottom: (first four are 1/2, the rest are 3/8)
Williams S-52
Artisan 4270
Blackhawk 49977 (more on this later)
Proto LA 5449
Wright MN60 (AC)
Stevens Walden 4050-A
S-K Diamond 45170
S-K 45170
Plomb WF-21

01 Nov 20-1bb.jpg01 Nov 20-1c.jpg

The 1/4 Ratchets are:

Walden 3150
Three S-K 40970 in descending order of age
Radian Drive K3
Plomb WF-8
Wright 95F? flex head (3/8 drive head in 1/4 body)
Duro-Chrome 4491 Refrigeration ratchet

Above them are Proto USA and CM 4281 1/4" speeders.
Below them are J.P. Danielson Parrot-head Pliers and Klein Bell System needle-nose crimpers

Ratchet-Action Speed Wrench Set SW-1000

01 Nov 20-1d.jpg

The Blackhawk was completely locked up and there are only rivets holding it together. I was about to start soaking it in degreaser when I bumped it and felt something trickle out of the top of the ratchet. After about 15 minutes of tapping the ratchet I had the pile of gritty **** shown in the last pic. One inch high and three inches in diameter. The only thing I can think of is that it is dried grease. The seam at the head of the ratchet is less than 1mm wide so I have to think it was grease-packed at the factory. The mechanism works great now. Any other theories?

Probably so on the dust pile. if you still have it, try some WD-40 of kerosene on some of it and see if it becomes grease again?

Nice finds!

Great finds this week guys! Great thoughts posted this week too.

I need that Garfield cartoon on my wall! Used to have several Garfield cartoons and items around the house.

Outlaw- nice haul. Looks like a great buy on the machinist box. I like that the badges are there. There often seems to be that tie to the person who owned a machinist box.

Misterbill- nice speeder haul. Sorry, I must have been reading quickly, thought it was Lugz from his post above yours.

Old Radar- nicely done on the ratchets! Can’t wait to see what your shopping partner found.

83 cool Craftsman tote. That looks like a slot for a hand saw ti come out the side?

Pelletman sweet Mac wrench.

The sun was flipping brutal today. My baggy t-shirt, mask, extra bags, etc. made things worse. I still had a good time picking at the flea though.

Several thing of interest today happened today.

I watched as a regular tool vendor who is very difficult to buy from with his high prices, purchase 5 junk ratchets from a random seller. All were cheapo imports. I think he paid over $20 total for what I consider $2 or $3 each ratchets. Now he’ll probably ask $10 apiece and sit in them for years. No wonder he’s so expensive. He piles stuff up and doesn’t want to sell it. Sounds familiar. LOL. I’ve been trying to buy this 3/4” drive Bonney socket from him for two years, but it’s too darn expensive.

I also went to a fast food drive thru where the workers always have a lousy, rude attitude. I’m done with the place for a while. I went back to get what they shorted me last time after two mistakes and lots of attitude that day, and today got more attitude. Surprisingly, a customer two cars behind got antsy and lost his cool, yelling at the line to move, TWICE!

I also made an interesting and unusual non-tool purchase at the flea. It covers two of the best topics, religion and politics, in one piece. :) Not sure if it’s worth anything or not, but I think I got a deal. Will have to post pics another day.
