I’ve been trying to buy this 3/4” drive Bonney socket from him for two years, but it’s too darn expensive.

I also went to a fast food drive thru where the workers always have a lousy, rude attitude. I’m done with the place for a while. I went back to get what they shorted me last time after two mistakes and lots of attitude that day, and today got more attitude. Surprisingly, a customer two cars behind got antsy and lost his cool, yelling at the line to move, TWICE!

I like the look of that Diamond monkey wrench.
I used to ignore them. Now I know to look them over for stamping.
As a kid, we didn't have many tools, but Dad had one of those that along with a cheap pliers was all I had to twist off my bicycle axle nuts to fix a flat tire.
Discovering actual combination wrenches was a revelation.

The sun was flipping brutal today. My baggy t-shirt, mask, extra bags, etc. made things worse. I still had a good time picking at the flea though.

Pic 3: USA made dual marked Whitworth/metric wrenches, brand unknown. Diamond and Mac pliers, Snap On ratchet wrench.

Those wrenches are Bridgeport but I’ve never seen ones with Whitworth markings before. Very cool.

Someone asked about the big wrench pictured here. It is a Bonney wrench with a Mack logo on it in the center.

If you didn't know it, both manufacturers were located in Allentown, PA. Mack Trucks moved there from Brooklyn in 1905 and Bonney moved there from Philly shortly thereafter, and both plants were located between the Little Lehigh creek and West creek. I was born and raised just north of there. We have a decent little Mack Trucks tools thread going, linked here.

As noted earlier, tin medic and I were 1 & 2 in the door--

Whenever I call Tin Medic #2 he gets made at me.

I also made an interesting and unusual non-tool purchase at the flea. It covers two of the best topics, religion and politics, in one piece. Not sure if it’s worth anything or not, but I think I got a deal. Will have to post pics another day.

Especially considering that my example has been sitting in a box with a bunch of other old tool and file handles for a few years and I didn't notice the resemblance until just a few days ago!

Me neither. Though I have noted the little footnote at the bottom of the 1940 catalog excerpt (page 48) I have posted a few times on various threads (incl. DOE) whenever the metric incongruity (1930's exports!) pops up, saying...

"*Supplied also for Whitworth Standard - (bolt sizes 1/8 inch to 9/16 inch) - Prices on application."

For those who don't wander too far from the GS thread, rusty65 and Fierljeppen up on the Mother Vise thread helped date my little blacksmith bench vise to German importers in the mid- to late-1800's.

I'm pretty stoked. Especially because it was such a classic purchase. As I have said before, my mother (94) is staying with us, so I have been getting out early and back quick. In the wee hours one table still had all its stuff covered with a blue tarp held down by four toolboxes and no truck or any vendor in sight. The boxes were relatively modern, but I still looked inside. The vendor next to the table saw me and said the guy, Butch (who I know), left a few minutes ago for a second load. So I pulled out the vise and gave it to the other vendor to hold. When I came back, Butch was there, the tarp was gone, and there was a dozen guys crowded around, pawing through the stuff, and watching him pull the new stuff out of his truck. Nobody was happy when I walked up in the middle of that melee, retrieved the vise from the other adjacent vendor, and showed it to Butch, who laughed and called me an "Honest Injun" (not meant pejoratively!).

Had a busy couple of days.

The PO was a big ammo reloader and had a truly impressive amount of tools. He had a bank of eight four-drawer filing cabinets in his garage—almost all the drawers were piled deep with tools. One drawer had at least 200 ¼” ratchets from just about all eras and makers. I’m slapping my forehead for not taking a picture.

Old Radar sent me the link to the sale in San Antonio. It's a four and a half hour drive from here but Sunday was 60% off. The original prices were damn close t list but at 60% off there were some deals. Unfortunately by the time I got there, I could see a lot of good things walking out the door, including one dude who had four pistols in his hands. There was a shelf with thirty or forty Hollywood reloading presses marked $350 and $500. I took seven of them at 60% off. I've also made an offer on the rest. We'll see what happens.

Got a pallet full of tools for $60 and a 5' tall lista cabinet with 3 drawers inside with tool holders (think CNC) for $100 plus the juice. Local auction.

Nice big slugger. Who made the palm ratchets? And what is the pressed steel wrench that looks like a double gator with elongated eccentric jaws?

Back to the same junk store where I found the Plomb 1455 auto body dolly last Friday to take a second look at what other auto body tools they had. I had seen a few more last week but was in a hurry and didn't look closely enough. Grabbed a second dolly (this one appears to eitehr be unmarked or any trace of the markings is long gone). Found a nice Plomb 1424 auto body hammer with what appears to be the original handle (round transitioning to octagonal at the grip) and a Fairmount 156-GB hammer. The Fairmout almost looks like something that could have been used on Leon Trotsky!

A shame on the cracked slide. The only way I figure that can happen is if someone uses the slide as an anvil. I don't think it has any effect on the clamping strength of the vise so I think the best place the crack could happen.

Seems I am getting very luck with Vises lately. Will I end up with a Vise from every vintage USA manufacturer? So far that is how it's going. I picked up this Athol 624 in good condition for $50. It was up on FB Market for about a month. Started at $300, week later $200, week later $100. Friday it dropped to $50, I saw the price drop on Saturday and let the seller know I'd take it. Seller owned the vise ~6 years and gave me this history:

"I lived in Yorktown Heights before I lived here and a gentleman who was my neighbor worked for Maytag. He was a service rep his whole life and his basement was filled with tools and when he passed away his kids allowed us to pick through the basement and that’s where I got it from."

We would all appreciate that experience.

Now that is a score! Even with the cracked slide. The cart is the real treasure IMO There’s been a few that have popped up in recent times over on the vise thread but they are scarce to say the least.

You may be interested to know this item was found at the Jersey shore, so I was told, though it originated in Brooklyn. The sellers are an older couple that travel back and forth.

It's a spoke wrench. Thicker than it looks. They are milled.

Funny thing is I stared at the picture for a moment, just because I like old black and white photos. The man selling this was wandering around talking to people, and his wife was way at the other end of the booth busy with something. I walked away and as I was passing her I said I like that old picture.

She said you know, I think President Kennedy’s in it. I was like oh really? Where, at he head table? She goes no, but somewhere near the back. So she calls her husband over and asks him, and he busts out his magnifying glass and points him out. Of course you don’t need a magnifier to see him but it was neat. I had to ask the question how much, and he tells me 7 bucks.

Had to take it. It’s still untouched in the nice original frame, with the label on the back from the shop in Brooklyn.

That is a great vise. Presently have two, but one is going to a friend. I think the 624 is probably Athol's best selling vise based on the amount of them I run across.

A few "artifacts" that were found as I cleaned the oak machinists box from Sat out:

The one I like the best: A hammer Head I'm sure made by Carl (Karl?) Heil, the presumed former owner:

It has his initials, and I can see machine marks and its not straight/rectangular, the "square" part has a taper! about 1/2 an oz. (my food scale isn't up to a more accurate measurement - 198 grains on the E-Scale... .45 oz? Hmm not so bad on the Food scale!)

A Knife that may never have been used: not a use mark on it, the edge is factory fresh (and sharp!) It is a Rostfrei, "Mellon sampling knife" from My Google-fu:

And some personal artifacts - I plan on getting hold of the auction folks and relay a message to see if the family, if any, would want these returned as mementos.

The document is dated 1942! The clipping must have had meaning to him, and his work badge:

A name plate with his name spelled with a "K" - the figure to the left appears to have religious significance: an old man carrying a child on his shoulders?
