Lugz and LS: Yes, that's what I thought, they must be new-ish. I was a kid in the 70s and 80s.

Couldn't find a MFG date online, but I found some on ebay selling for under $30 for the pair.

I don't remember Sears announcing no more sales. I do remember JC Penney hiring the guy from Apple who tried that a few years ago. Ended the same way...

Went to an antique fair this weekend and picked up a Worth* protractor for $10. A old thread here on GJ says it may have been made by Pexto for a house brand hardware store between 1925-1945. Either way, the machining on this is very tight and smooth and the blade still tracks straight at 90. A little steel wool should clean the surface rust up nicely.

Barcalo! The geometric version is often unmarked.

The Art Deco styled DOE is a Barcalo. Some are so marked, some aren't. The bigger ones, 1" and up are pretty uncommon, so you've got a good start for a collection:rocker:

A couple mfgrs used that brand at the same time, annoyingly. Walden, for one.

Thanks Don & Bob for identifying the Barcalo. Now I'll have to keep an eye out for others...

Thanks Lugz for the info. I don't gravitate toward Hex tools mostly because so few have manufacture's marks. Any idea why no one bothered to claim their work?

That's odd, I would have expected Pexto to be contracting precision stuff out to companies like B&S and Starrett...

Thats very possible, this worth shares a lot of key characteristics of a Starrett of the same vintage.

A rebrand of a rebrand.

Picked up this Kennedy setup with a Wilton 300S bolted to it from Craigslist. I was searching for vises and came across this. Didn't really need another toolbox but wanted the vise. It was a package deal. But I figured for $140 I couldn't pass it up.

MIKE,
I don’t think there’s anything unusual about finding non-Craftsman-branded Sears hand tools. I recall seeing side-by-side similar tools in the hardware departnent and being confused by price discrepency until I realized the lower-priced versions were not marked Craftsman. I don’t recall the precise terms, but I think the non-Craftsman had limited warrantees (like 1-year against manufacturing defects), rather than guaranteed forever. An unlimited warrantee effectively doubles the retail price.
...and buyer beware when getting them to honor the warranty correctly. Years ago I had a Craftsman branded spade with a wood shaft. It was used and abused and eventually broke. When I went in for a free replacement, the clerk tried to hand me the non-craftsman wood spade. I pointed out that I bought the lifetime warranty spade and expected it replaced in kind. I ended up getting a now fiberglass shaft spade that carried the lifetime warranty. Haven't broken that one yet....:D

These monkey wrenches are heavy and look pretty bullet proof (famous last words). Hadn't thought about warranty, but if the new ones follow the rest of Craftsman's trajectory over the past 20-30 years, I'm sure they're made out of 70% of the material that these were.

BTW, forgot to post this the other day. Finally got these Metro-style wire racks out of my Grandfather's basement (same place the monkey wrenches came from).

My Grandfather (RIP) got them when his employer (jewelry industry) closed in the late 80s or early 90s. They're a different brand (not Metro).

There's one more still is his old basement that I need to go and get (ran out of room on the trailer). They'll need a major cleanup before I put them in my basement.

In case you weren't keeping score, I now have an old Langelier / Leach sensitive drill press (with local pedigree to Providence, RI) and these racks, all pillaged by my Grandfather when offered by his employer.

I also have a Jet mill/drill and that big stainless automation panel/cabinet, as well as two filing cabinets and a couple of work benches, which I pilfered when they were headed to the dumpster at work. Oh, and a couple of steel cabinets from when a previous employer redecorated the office areas.

I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree after all!

Mike

Awesome score!

What is the threaded-looking tool at the bottom of this pic?

EDIT: Just looked closer, is that a flexible extension shaft?

A few of you military collectors might find these interesting. I was going to PM them to a certain Private on here but his message box is full (perhaps a little KP duty might be in order) :)
HAHA! I'm good now, thanks for the prompt.

Interesting re-packs for several reasons.

First of all, see that Preservation, Method I? Cosmolene! If you haven't opened those yet, they will be soaked in sticky dry cosmo and maybe cheesecloth.

Is photo 1 the end of one of the boxes you're showing the tops of in photos 2 & 3?

Here's the reason I ask.

Even if the box in the first photo wasn't dated, it could be dated to the 50's by the 11-digit FSN and the "57" embedded in the contract number. Very cool that the parts (we'll get to those in a second...) were made by Henley Filson. They were a still somewhat mystifying mfgr, making everything from wrenches to sapper blasting cap pliers to, apparently, bolts for bogie springs. That got my attention, as did the "-G179" suffix on the 11-digit FSN.

All Army parts during WWII and well into KW were classified by Standard Nomenclature List (SNL) categories. "G" was for motor vehicles. Willys and Ford 1/4 ton 4x4 trucks ("Jeeps") were G503. Dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 trucks ("WC") were G505. GMC 2-1/2 ton 6x6 DUKW amphibious trucks ("Ducks") were G508. Just for some context.

G179 was the famous Weasel, a small tracked vehicle made by Studebaker in WWII and the Korean War. Originally designed for snow, for use by Allied special forces in Scandinavian countries, it was put to wider used as an all-terrain (think mud) version of the jeep in the ETO, PTO, and later in Korea. And it definitely would have had a bogie type suspension, like tanks, like railroad cars.

Do tractor-trailers have bogie spring type suspensions?

The other photos are showing lengthwise boxes stamped "REO" (for Randsom E Olds Motor Car Company). REO made a crapton of M35 2-1/2 ton (the famous "Deuce-and-a-half") 6x6 tractor-trailer trucks during WWII and the Korea War. And lo and behold, the boxes are also stamped G742, which was the SNL supply category for deuces in the 50's.

So, if photo 1 is the end of the boxes in photo 2 and 3, it's a bit of a headscratcher.

I had related buying several milk crates & buckets from the pizza oven pool owner guy's estate.
Here is one of the buckets.
I had already made a pile of 4 milk crates when I saw this bucket. At the time everything was wet dirty & rusty...except for those aluminum handles sticking out. "Probably harbor freight", I thought.
How much for this bucket lot I ask.
The seller looked at for 30 seconds & says, "Well, it has a vise in there, ... how about 15 bucks.
That'll work.
Bucket boss
2 extension cords
Ridgid 24" aluminum
Westward (chinesium) 24" aluminum (both wrenchesrusty, but cleaned up nice) will flip at fleamarket.
Red Wilton seems good will clean up this winter.

It does. Alot of the wartime 9/32 drive boxes with the Air Corps contract numbers had that error. I had and moved several along to a collector in Scotland several years ago. As if Plomb Tool Co didn't already have enough legal issue with Fayette R. Plumb Tool Company when Plomb was spelled correctly, they had a hugeass batch of cardboard boxes with even more egregious inadvertent mistakes on top of it!

I haven't seen a Wilton go for a bargain price up here on craigslist/fb market/eprey/offerup. Got lucky at a few garage/estate sales on various vises(one wilton) but online the Wilton retail value seems to be well known.

Photo 1 stands alone. I have only found one like it.
Photo 2 and 3 go together and I have a pile of them.
The boxes are still sealed but there are others that have been opened.
I have more to go through and I will post more pictures.

Is there a more appropriate thread for this?

I keep throwing stuff in here that I'm getting for free. I know it's "allowed" (I asked early on) but is there a thread dedicated to free stuff (which is similar but different than finding great stuff cheap at garage sales)?

BTW: 3Jakes, You **** for that $15 bucket of stuff!

The estates sales ads haven't really shown anything much in the way of tools around these parts lately. Not the case for a lot of you folks who have been knocking it out of the park! I picked up a few Stanley woodworking hand tools this morning. An interesting and useful Stanley No 95 edge trimming block plane. I think it may be an early one but need to find out how to date it. Also, a Stanley No 271 router plane. Again, a useful tool that will be a user for me. Last, a Stanley spokeshave. Model is unknown. The seller thought it might be a No 51.

Thanks Everyone. The plan is to keep both.

I forgot to mention that there also was some tools included. When I get them sorted I'll post some pics.

I reached back out to the guy who I bought the Stanley planes from this morning. Then went back over and picked up this Stanley No 70 box scraper and a scorp (made in Japan) for $5. I'll never need a box scraper I suspect but for $5 and including a scorp I couldn't pass it up. The scorp may come in handy.

Toto You **** on that Kennedy cart AND a Wilton bullet at that price!!!

Is there a more appropriate thread for this?
If you mean a thread dedicated to NOS WWII tools and/or truck parts etc as a topic unto itself, no. And if you picked them all up at a swap meet or the like, this would be the place. Speaking only as a retired host, not the current host, who may feel differently, if it's a **** ton of stuff that will drag the entire thread to its center of gravity for days, blocking out the light of day for other finds and other discussions, probably a separate thread would be best.

Thanks for clarifying, by the way. Different boxes make much more sense!
