After careful deliberation (and a few freshly-baked snacks), I am pleased to announce the results of the 2021 Garage Sale Host poll...

It’s bmwrd0!

CONGRATULATIONS!

A Christmas present from the wife

a circa 1800 brass leather embosser for the bookbinding trade. Marked Timbury, London, Potter lane.

Nice present, bmw...
but what’s the story on that Moby **** behind it? Is it a 1930 edition or reprint? The dust jacket looks immaculate.

Congrats to BMW. I think you’ve paid your dues!

Nice haul 3bay! What's the width on the chisel?

Thanks Tex, I believe it’s a 1/2” chisel.

If you ever decide to let loose of the Thorsen Navy sockets, I wouldn’t mind adding them to my Navy toolbox. Being both a Thorsen and Navy tool collector makes them doubly appealing to me.
-Don

Don if I decide to let them go you’ll be the first to know. I have some other older Thorsen sockets, nothing like the collection you’ve got, but I like some of the older stuff as well.

Well, well, well. It looks like I am the host to be!

Thank you so much, everyone, this is truly an honor. I shall strive to give us the enjoyment we have come to find in these threads over the years, and to live up to LessorSon, who truly prevailed over a challenging year.

So, here is to Lessorson and a thank you to everyone! See you all in the next thread, if I don't see you before.

****************

That is the 1930 edition of Moby ****, illustrated by the famous Rockwell Kent. The dust jacket is a reproduction, as it is too lovely to go forgotten.

That was a thrift store find a few years ago, one of those "once in a lifetime" type scores.

The DJ is, like I said, a reprint by Facsimile Dust Jackets, out of San Fransisco. I love a lot of the art that went into book covers in the past, I when I find something of particular interest, I will often pick up a repop DJ for it, just for the art. There is a chain of thrift stores around here that keep a large selection of older books, and many of these are without the jacket, so I swing by them whenever I am in the neighborhood.

Next to it on the shelf are two more Kents, which I also sprung for the jackets on:

Not as famous, but just as nice. I probably have half a dozen or so books by him.

Congrats, Beemer! You've certainly been a strong contributor to the Garage Sale thread over the years, and more than earned the privilege of hosting next year's relaunch.

Here's hoping for a few more no-/low-contact bargains in the remaining days of 2020, and a prosperous 2021 for all!

Congrats BMW!

Thanks again to LS!

And Merry Christmas, everyone!

I cooked dinner for just the 4 of us (due to covid, we normally have over a dozen). Keeping it real for this thread, I did use a large stainless stock pot pulled from Dad's basement earlier this year, made steaming veggies super easy! And two Corelle casserole dishes from the 70s/80s, acquired from family over the years for the stuffing and ham!

The soup (Italian Wedding Soup) is inspired by my Great-Grandmother's tradition.

Yes, that's a lot of food for two adults and two kids. We'll have leftovers for at least a week, will freeze a bunch of it. I only cook like this a handful of times per year...

Mike

Congrats to BMW for selection as the host for 2021, and "job well done" to LesserSon for 2020!

It's a 2 hour trip from my house to visit family, with 2 large antique malls in between. Sometimes, I get lucky with time to stop in both; today was one of those days where it took 6 hours to make a 2 hour trip. Here's the overview of the haul:

Pyrex solid blue mixing bowl to replace the one in my set (which is missing most of the blue)
WW2 USMC blanket (no USMC embroidered)
GMC 310-A hydraulic jack (it's going to a friend who has a DUKW). Handle is wrong, but he's glad to get the right jack.
Plomb 12oz ball pien
Morgan Chicago 145 4.5" swivel vise

That’s a great looking vise, Steve. My daughter found a cool Christmas gift for me. Here it is along with a picture she took in 2005 at the Railroad Museum near Lodi, CA.

So I’m building a new garage and know I will have to do a final grade of stone before I pour a slab this coming spring. That means it will have to be compacted. I was going to have to rent one so I started searching the marketplace and found this wacker jumping jack. A retired contractor was selling it. At 80 years old, he showed me how to use it.
It was funny how his daughter who was helping him sell everything got mad at him for using the thing. Haha. Working keeps people like him young. I paid $300, I don’t know if I got a deal but it will pay for itself. It packs a nice punch.

Neat buy there Bagged.

Had a fun day at the auto swap. Picked a lot of hand tools including a couple interesting ratchets I didn’t have, several wrench sets, and an old Craftsman power drill with the famous Yellow and blue mystery box that pops up on here once in a while.

The drill kit came with some extras: a pile of bits, a little Huot box, Allen wrench set, Irwin spade set in an old box, The case has some hooks for hanging the parts .

A quick preview of an interesting find today.

I had been searching through a bin of sockets and had seen several that I didn't recognize other than they looked old--no marks beyond a five point star on either side of the socket size. Rooting around on another table, I spied a thin metal box that got my heart pumping. Inside was a large 1/2" speeder, several sockets that looked just like the ones I had seen in the bin earlier and a **** load of dried grease. I was able to scrape enough grease off to see the Indestro mark on the speeder. I hurried back to the socket bin and spent 20 minutes scrounging through it to find all it held that might go with the set.

Altogether I found 15 6pt sockets, 6 4pt sockets, the universal, the short and long adapter--long one has a good twist in it, 6 12pt sockets that may or may not be related and a handful of unrelated sockets.

Sadly my hope that more of the label would be visible once the grime was cleaned off was dashed.

Here's the rub--AA indicates there is no firm date for when Indestro used the stars on their sockets but believes they started in the late '20s/early '30s. The earliest Indestro catalog on archive.org is 1935 and they show a similar set (#1536) but it has mainly 12pt sockets instead of 6pt. None of the sets I could find had anything but a few 6pt sockets.

Using the 12pt sizes of the 1536 set as a guide, I'm missing the 1", 15/16", 7/8", 3/4" & 19/32".

Does anyone have access to an Indestro catalog from the late '20s?

I'm headed back tomorrow to search for more sockets and the other drive tools. Wish me luck!!

A better place to ask would be the Duro-Indestro thread, OR, but I suspect the answer is no. This has come up before on that thread. I have a near complete set of the same tools, no box, and FrankLee and a few others have the whole caboodle in the box. None of four.cycle's old ads includes the 6pt set either. The best you can do is presume it was the same as the 12pt set. Here is a link to a post in that thread where I included an early 30s ad for Frank. If you scroll back you'll find his set.

3. ETF (Canada brand) open end set
Nice near one-fell-swoop, 3bay. I found theee together a few years ago and by hook, crook, and trades I have managed to cobble together a 7-pc set out of that since then. If you're interested in seeing the sizes, I posted updates to my set along with catalog excerpts in the ETF thread, linked here.
