^^^^ This. 3bay, if you got all that and from your story I can't imagine how many tools were at that sale. Great finds and yes You ****! (y)
Like you I occasionally run into some very strange people at the sales and luckily they seem to be the exception rather than the rule around here.

There were quite a few tools. Probably good I didn’t have more cash. Lots of mobile kits of cheaper stuff made up for junkyard or lending out it seemed like. There was a whole big briefcase kit, so I was thinking Xcelite and that, but it was pieced together junk tools and moldy.

It’s been a while since I hit a sale as it opens. Don’t get to too many here, almost forgot how frustrating and competitive the crowd can be.

I miss quite a few of the old characters from there! Also the lining up and small talk/ballbusting. Always those same first few guys on the sign up sheet, and then about 16 names of people who don’t exhist, just to buy them some shopping time,LOL. ”Barb and Dan? Barb and Dan?Barb and Dan, are you here?”. Meanwhile the whole porch and lawn full of people are ready to wring someone’s neck if they don‘t get on with it and call the next name. I can’t tell you how many times I almost said I‘m Joe or Bill or Suzie when they called a name who wasn’t there. I may have slipped in during the mayhem a couple times back in the day ,lol.
I really miss those basements just packed with every old tool imaginable, the old timers who had one or more of everything. Ahh the good old days.

Out here, almost no sign-up sheets, just a line. The first dozen get let in at the start then one-in-one-out, something like that. I never bother to show up at the start, usually aim for an hour after. All the "island" people out here seem to beeline for any new Snap-on or Craftsman, maybe Proto, and leave the rest behind as they have no idea what is what. I might miss a few things, but it works for me and keeps the aggravation to a minimum.

I also have very thick skin and brush off most things, but someone swinging a gun around would bug the heck out of me. But you really don't see that here as all firearms have to be run through a dealer, so someone could pay for one but not get to walk off with it.

And I love, love, love those sales that are just jam-packed with everything. You never know what you will find on the third or fourth day.

So yesterday the Mrs and I went to an Estate Sale in the area. There wasn't much there tool wise but in the garage I found a Vise Grip 4WR marked $4. I've never seen one so I grabbed it. The Mrs folded it in with her crafty purchases so I feel she paid full price on her items and my item was FREE.

Cheers

Jim

Wow, some really great finds this weekend, guys!

Quick question: The plastic totes (Rubbermaid, Sterilite) that I pulled from my parents basement last year had a really horrible smell. Who knows what got absorbed from the air into the plastic.

A year later, the smell really has dissipated some, but is still very noticeable. I thought they'd just air out in the garage and shed over timI,

I'm sure many of you encounter this.. Any suggestions on what I can do to get rid of the smell?

Mike

Recycle them. Stirlite shatter VERY easily. So I got rid of them.

Oh yeah, love the professional sales that advertise and have a bunch of Craftsman tools. Like you said, Craftsman stuff seems to occupy the masses while I scope out the other professional brands that the masses don't recognize at all. Heck many pro estate sale guys price the Craftsman stuff high due to the name recognition while in turn price less recognized brands cheap........works for me. Practically never buy Craftsman tools at pro sales because if I even wanted them thanks to the abundance out there they can usually be seen and had much cheaper at family run sales. Tool truck brands, well I typically I won't pay the prices the pro sales guys are asking anyways so those end up occupying the masses also while I search the lesser known.

Out here, sales seem to be run by companies that deal with certain things. The high-end antique sales are done by some companies and those ones generally don't do sales of other things, like farm estates and sales like that. So, if you end up at one of the sales for a company that doesn't normally handle tools you can end up with some outrageous bargains. I once found a Snap-on impact driver set for $4 at one of those sales, deals like that. There is a company I generally avoid the sales of because they love to bag things up and you might have to buy a ton of **** to get a complete set as they have no idea how to handle tools, but every once in a while they will do a tool sale and I have gotten some incredible deals, like Starrett for a buck kinda deals.

but I thought the image of the 70's Camaro RS on the packaging was pretty cool.
Agreed! It's hand-drawn, almost animated, and out of scale in a muscular way.
I went on to find the Bluegrass carry box
PotY 2 Nice Find.jpg
Then I went inside and met the owner of the home. She was very nice, told me about her husband’s recent passing
It looks like they were Catholic. That's an unusual 3-way with St Christopher and the Madonna flanking the crucifix.

And now, a word from our sponsor...

I hope everyone is having as great a year as possible, what with everything that has been going on in the world. And due to the existential nature of our hobby, this is the season of slowing down, of contemplating the days gone by, of ruminating over the years events. Along with thinking about your baseball team's chances in the playoffs, and how your football team might get there, I want you to think long and hard about this thread.

Who has been picking gold, who has had a solid presence in our little corner of the internet week in and week out, and who is the new guy that keeps showing up? This year, we will not be rating people by the "YOU ****" standard, as even though it is helpful to see who is finding such great treasures as to cause envy from around the world of junk collectors, not everyone uses that term. In fact, it turns out that people use all sorts of things to denote a praiseworthy score, so many that we cannot do a search for any particular words, as we couldn't possibly know them all. Let alone do a computer search for them.

So, in that vein, I am asking all of you to go back and search both this forum and your memory to help us decide who should be nominated for Picker of the Year, and also for who should be next year's thread host. You can post it in this thread or you can PM me. I know I will go back through all 100+ pages to both relive the season and to find WHO SHALL WEAR THE CROWN!

Yes, that is right, the crown. For as we shall anoint the next Picker Of The Year, we will need to crown them with ceremonial safety gear:
51505408861_90cf817db9_b.jpg
Here, you can see it in all of its glory. The hard hat symbolizes the need for digging deep under the benches and trailers of the vendors. The vice, to symbolize holding objects to free our hands, also a sign of one of our holy grails. And as these items were found in venues of used merchandise, they are appropriate for our King.

So on that note, we must find a new king to crown, as I shall need to pass this torch along. I will count on all of you to help me in this search!

A perfect addition to the Garage Sale thread host tradition!! And you sure 'kept that under your hat' all year. :) I remember when you found it. It was early. Maybe even January.

Must have been. I thought it was different looking too. There was a crate on the garage floor with a stack of old cigar boxes, found it in one of those boxes. Has a clip on the back. Probably clipped on a car visor but you know how today's visors are thicker and a different material than they used to be, no go. I put it in my car though. Hopefully it will remind me to love others when I'm out and about!

Scored this molding set fo a fiver. This was second weekend of the estate sale. Already claimed were the 57 Chevy, restored Case tractor from the 30’s, an small old dozer, and tools I never got to see.
Becoming a fan of the older Craftsman tools. Seem to stumble onto some decent Craftsman fo next to nothing.

went to the return of the called off auction last Saturday. A lot of the things I was going to bid on were pulled and many more had been given a reserve. I still managed a few things. The best were a Stihl FS 130 string trimmer and a Milwaukee Hacksall. The string trimmer was so dirty it was hard to tell what model it was and when the helper pulled the rope, it acted like it was locked. I had already checked it and knew that was not the case. This particular model is a two stroke with cam and valve train. The compression release is dependent on the valve adjustment. It cleaned up well and once the valves were adjusted it runs like new. I stole it for $5. The hacksall had such a bad cord they were afraid to plug it in and it had been painted with black house paint. New cord and some cleaning and it is in great condition. $15.

Saw this listed up on CL for upcoming garage sale (but I have no connection to the seller).

Thought it interesting enough to post it, given number of Coleman items that appear here (i.e. especially Outlaw).

Per seller it's a Huge Coleman Grill, Still works, we just have no need for this big grill. 6 feet by 20 inches. Price $125.00.

That thing is COOL! I have no use for something that big, either. Might even be too big for a Boy Scout troop!

"Forty dollars of rust & trouble..."
Went to an estate moving sale.
A gentleman in Arkansas had a "junke shop". Then moved here to Pennsylvania. His storage shed of unsold goods lost a roof, he died, & the rain just filled up the tubs of stuff & sat for some time.
I made a pile of anything that looked remotely salvageable and offered $40. which was excepted.
I am just glad I no longer have any 10 year old boys living here, otherwise there would be medical bills involved with the three mace things.

And while I'm at it,
At another yard sale picked up this ratchet for $3.00, cleaned up nicely.
And this Craftsman Tool box.
Kind of messy outside, but not rusted out at all.
Priced at $15, but was able to carry it away for $7.00
Inside is a cool local ruler from where no shoe is over 2 bucks.
Can anyone tell me the correct name for this style of tool box?
I found several on ebay named lunch box, as well as tomb stone.

Nice haul 3jakes! You ****! That Craftsman box is my favorite, but the mace and flails are a close 2nd. My boys would seriously maim each other if they were given access to those.

Today's flea haul (Lugz 2021_58) was small in number of items, but it put a little strain on the strap of my shoulder bag.

20210930_102959.jpg

As LS and a few other Bethlehem Spark Plug Co brethren know, I already have a "D" set, but this one, while missing its handles, has an excellent decal and some odd pieces my set wasn't even issued. Will have to go back to the books on those. EDIT: Disregard. It's a later Splitdorf set "G".

Not a Thorsen guy, per se, and it's way later than my collecting period, but a complete deep set in a box with intact lid label is just too good to leave behind no matter the mfgr or era.

That blue palm rat multi-socket gizmo is not marked.

The tiny "perfect handle" type screwdriver struck my fancy because of the unusual shoulder, and a "2" marking on the tip (shank length) putting it over the ho hum factor for me. It bears a hard-to-read marking.
