Nice finds OR! if you'd rather not go down the 4" scale Rabbit hole: :hellobye:

I did fair today: and no drama! All nice people!

First stop: I restrained myself and Left a 60's folding camp table, -the type that folds to a suitcase and expands to a table ad 4 seats. Perfect condition No battle damage water stains scratches, or rust! (Masonite top, yellow edges, black frame) I have one almost as nice, as the PO made a padded slip cover for transport - this one had the original box, if a bit tattered - better the box than the table!

I go a few key ring lights adn an odd skeleton key - probably for a jewelry box? adn a plastic clip I think will work as a keeper for the cover to the crawdad trap from yesterday.

Y1 Key ring lights.jpg

Also this:

Y1 Box 1.jpg

Which becomes this!:

Y1 Box 2.jpg

Appears to be military? Grey paint, so I'm guessing Navy? (no rust except for the hasps, so likely SS

Y1 Box 3.jpg

Next stop I got all this free:

Yardsticks - Going to go after the grimy one with Murphy's oil soap...:

Y2 Yardsticks.jpg

And mostly tools the Pry bar adn BP are Craftsman, no Branding on the rest (The knife is "Japan" and going to my son who has been after me for a throwing knife, or at least bring them camping hunting for a while - I'm going to suggest he paints it orange...

Y2 Free CM.jpg

And a buck each here from a TOO:

Proto, Herbrand SK? Wartime? no markings to see yet; Tru-Fit DBEs and DOE, Vlechek chisel, Anothr "Beehive, Driver.

The odd Forked/open end piece is marked "JS on one side (Owners marks?) and "The Challenge Mchry Co, Grand Haven Mich in fine print on the other. forged in is "578"

The last piece is a real Whatzit". the only mark is "Intertype" the "Stop" does slide in a dovetail slide, the opening is tapered and sort of "edged"

Definitely military and Navy ocean grey is very likely. The use of the 11-digit FSN ("8460-212-8086") matches the "72" (1972) in the "DSA" (Defense Supply Agency) contract number, and vice versa, as annotated in one of my 'Helpful Hints' notes on FSN's in the vintage board Sticky...
Private Lugnutz said:
Any marking with a "DSA" and an 11-digit FSN is from 1962 to 1974.
If you google the FSN and nothing shows up, add "00" for an unspecified COO number, which were often used long after the 13-digit NSN came into play. So, 8460-00-212-8086.

Yep, 2-3/8" thick at the thickest when folded. One corner I need to straighten slightly, and someone TIG welded the opposite corner, but other than that and some paint damage, its good to go! Definitely handy for shipboard use.

Thanks, Beemer, for the memory jog! I stared at that shape and knew it was familiar but just couldn't fill it in.
Interestingly, the only 1/4" set box I see in the online catalogs from '48-mid '60s is set #4700 that came with a 1 x 2-1/4 x 6-3/4" box. My box measures 1-1/4 x 3 x 7". It did have the remains of some very deteriorated red paint that came off with little more than a stern glance.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the chrome drive head on that Cadmium sliding T? Early wartime when they still had some chrome parts or early post-war when they were using up Cad parts?

RTM--Thanks for the links. I had seen the PM discussion on Scherr-Tumico but gave it up after the first page when there was only speculation about the merger date. Early '40s sounds believable, but still nothing firm.

As for the 4" Starrett rule, I thought I had one but I can't put my hands on it. One will come along.

Somewhere after 1967 the box 4795 morphed (dimensionally) from left to right. I strolled through (likely) all the same catalogs as you did via Internet Archive. As of now the current catalog lists the box this way: J4795R Safety Red 7x 1-1/4 x3-7/16 0.75lbs I have not found any 70's catalogs(yet)
Edit to add: Due to this thread we now know in 1970 the style of the 4795 box definitely changed: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/1970s-proto-catalog.344873/ I realize none of this helps to answer your question Radar, just putting my 2cents in for free.LOL

As to the box size/shape, I know Plomb played around with a variety of different final configurations in socket boxes over the years, so I wouldn't be too surprised by an oddball Proto box.

That, and I too am keeping my eyes open for a 4" Starrett blade or two. Lufkin blades will work though.

I have a 1/4 t handle that is cad/ chrome. It could also be Korean War era when they had chrome restrictions again? I have a few cad plated Proto la marked tools that are cadmium plated.

Been busy the last few weeks and haven't had time to sort and take pics of the few item's I've picked up. Finally got around to it today, have a pretty good pile in the cleaning queue...

This pic is from an unfruitful day of yard saling, most of the sales I went by were pretty bare. I think this is two different sales and $15-20 or so. All pretty run of the mill stuff although I did think the Riverside DBE was interesting as I don't see many of them. The #3 Bailey will be an interesting project, looks like someone broke the front tote off in the hole.
IMG_4144.jpg

Next batch I got at a shop sale in an industrial marine area. The big Plomb 1163 DBE at the bottom is enormous and it broke my heart when the guy told me that he bought several tugboats along with the shop and that the boats were full of tools "like that big wrench". He ended up scrapping them

Above the Plomb is a big Mac C16, the long driver is P&C, the big DOE is BluePoint and the rest is a big Indestro Combo and hex set plus a small corroded Proto combo. Bummed that the Fleet set is missing the 3/8 socket and adaptor but I was also surprised it's as complete as it is. Not sure what the little DBE at the top is, it's marked "Chrome Alloy", and "No 180125 - Forged in USA". After a fair bit of negotiating and almost leaving the Fleet set behind I ended up at $30 for this batch.
IMG_4136.jpg

Next up is a couple days worth of the flea market that opened up for the summer. This place is pretty tough picking as the few tool vendors that have good stuff generally know what it is and want a lot for it. Then there are the guys with trucks full of junk that still want an arm and a leg! Oh well, it's nice to have a consistent flea that's within a reasonable driving distance.

The only bargains in here are probably the New Britain and Proto spinners which I paid a buck or two each for. Everything else was in the $2 range for sockets and most wrenches and around $5-6 for the ratchets.

IMG_4138.jpg

Last up is a tool box I grabbed for 20 bucks on Offerup. I could see a few ratchets in there that were interesting and it fortunately turned out to be a legit dude that was moving and not some crackhead selling stolen stuff...I don't need another toolbox at all but I'm pretty sure I'll get my money back and then some when I clean and flip the box, it's in really nice shape.

My favorite thing in the whole box is probably the Camillus folder, that one will be going to my boys when they're old enough. Looks very much like my first knife. There's also a set of torx drivers that will be useful for bike work.
IMG_4139.jpg

Here's the ratchet drawer - Challenger, 2 SK Wayne, Companion, Husky, and the Williams which is one of the reasons I bought the box. The other ratchets are foreign. Most of the extensions are Thorsen, the hinge is SK.
IMG_4141.jpg

Finally the bottom drawer with a big mishmash of stuff. Most of this will end up in the goodwill pile but I'll hold on the Thorsen rat, Proto speeder, and some of the other US made bits.

Yes, that is a Navy Cruise Box. Still have one of mine from back in 1986. We would ship manuals, aircraft log books, pubs, cold weather gear (I worked in Antarctica), supplies, etc... When I got out of the Navy, I mounted mine on my motorcycle trailer to store tools and cargo straps.

haven't added much lately but found the following on sat:
starret outside caliper, partial roll of safety wire (1 of 2), inexpensive punch set, leather oblong punch, pittsburgh (hf) crowfoot wrenches, 12" 3/8" drive proto extension, craftsman 3/8" breaker bar & ratchet, snapon 3/8" ratchet (fv71?), craftsman 1/4" breaker bar, no-name flexible screwdriver and 1/4" spinner, scribe/scratch awl, assortment of 3/8" and 1/4" universals (p&c, wright, craftsman, indestro), small air chuck, 70w glue gun.
<$15 for all.
day cut short by large scew that led to a new (and much more expensive) set of tires.
my sale budget is blown for a few weeks.

Bingo! Yes, VXE-6. I was a polar helicopter crewchief from 1984 to 1987. Aircrew School in Pensacola, FL with a tour in HC-16 for a year from 1983 to 1984. Three tours to McMurdo in 84, 85, and 86 flying in UH-1N Heuys. Six awesome stay-overs in Christchurch, NZ.
I was stationed in Point Mugu, Ca and drove by the C-130s of VXE-6 everyday.

accident? surgery?
Hope you recover swiftly.
Surgery. My L4-5 disc was massively herniated, with the bulge causing nerve impingement on my left leg. No lifting more than 5lbs for a month (wife is NOT happy about that!) and then I got hit with the covid bug. Tomorrow my stiches come out. I have a ton of stuff I picked up just before this whole thing was scheduled, but haven't even gotten down to the shop to take pics yet, and I think there is still some stuff on the passenger seat of the truck.

I finally got around to going through a cardboard box full of sockets from a bundle bought at Friday's swap meet. In all, there were over 50 sockets, only a few of which were reject imports.

Taiwan 1/2 dr. impact 6-pt. (Harbor Freight) 7/16, 1/2, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16

There was also what seems to be a thread protector for an OTC puller, with a part number of "618-5 OTC" I can't find any reference on the internet for this.

I was happy with just the P&C 8-points, and all the Williams sockets were a bonus. The Bonney A24 will become a user.

I went to a car show and swap meet last week. I was looking for a big block chevy intake but came back empty handed. However, I did manage to find a 1965 chevy truck owners guide and protect-o-plate in the original sleeve (I have a ‘66 truck), some Atlas dynamite pliers, a little brass fire extinguisher, and a brass hammer. Today I stopped by my favorite used tool dealer and got a Craftsman long c two drawer chest with a bunch of old Boeing and aerospace machinist decals for $20

If you ever decide to offload the 1965 Chevy truck owner’s guide please PM me as I have a ‘65 and have been looking for one. Thanks...

A few close MP picks.
3.25" aluminum leg or bench swiveler with pipe grippers. Not marked but definitely in the manner of Cole Tool Mfg.
DSC05518.JPG
And a old pair hell4stout unmarked ratchet jacks using 1" round handles being 15" tall retracted.

Solo flight to Leesport Farmers Market this morning. $16 brought home several items:
1960 date code Snap-on 3/8 spinner. It was so cruddy, I bought it solely from seeing the date code. Even after cleaning, the logo is barely visible. 3306049A-7DB8-41EA-A854-BE413A6830A7.jpeg
Herbrand tappet wrench set, missing one of the H3s. 571D579C-3096-46D1-82FB-EA8321E8A73B.jpegThorsen [EDIT - no: it’s Black Hawk] lobed doe. Starrett 6” rule. Mossberg pin tool. For-A-Ford stamped doe. KD pliers. Disston Triumph saw set. Mac punch. BEBB348E-914E-4CB8-B8CC-05FFA0BA1F4E.jpegPlomb carbon scraper. Vulcan spring tool(?). Bonney “C” maleable S-shaped doe (broken). Bonaloy tappet. Bonney CV 3/8dr extension and sliding tee. Black Hawk socket. Millers Falls nailset. Unidentified screw extractor set (was in a melted vinyl pouch).

For-A-Ford stamped doe.
Nice find. Please report the sizes when you clean it up, either here, or in the DOE thread, where I've posted mine. I found three different wrenches/size combinations, within a few months of each other, strangely, at two different flea markets, a few years ago. They are one of my most precious "sets". Linked here.

I went to an Estate Sale today that advertised eveything for free (No previous photos) I got there about fifteen minutes after it stated and people were leaving with tons of stuff. I don't know if anything good was taken. There was nothing spectacular that I got, just things I could use.

That oiler is quite nice. Miner oil is great if you sharpen a lot, too.

That oiler is quite nice. Miner oil is great if you sharpen a lot, too.
Ah. Thank you sir. I have a shelf that I put antique memorabilia on. I got it for that. I was going to pour it out. Yes I love sharpening tools and knives.

Can also mix mineral oil with bees wax to make a tool handle finish. I would not use it for kitchen grade stuff with old mineral oil. But I make that up with fresh stuff for wooden spoons, etc
