I don't know the significance of those numbers, but you can never have enough good pairs of Vice Grips! And, I seem to continuously use the needle nose variety more than any other type.

4” Bent Nose. The bent nose were not made for a long time and are pretty hard to find from what I’ve learned.

OH... Didn't look closely enough at those pics! Thanks for the clarification, those definitely would be useful!

I think those are old Peterson Dewitt ones. The BN I think means bent nose, much more uncommon than the straight ones I think. The 4 I think is the length. I think they made 4, 6 and 9 maybe/

Others who know more please chime in.

One estate sale today on a planned route home from work travel .There was quite a shop in the back of a garage.Guy had quite a bit of tools. After some digging this was what I pulled out:

Only brought two things home from the flea this morning (Lugz 2022_47), a Long C ball-pein hammer handle (inside an unmarked ball-pein hammer head, not Craftsman) and a small surveyors' level made no later than 1962 by Swift & Andersen, which is only the second time I have ever seen that name before. The first was on the magnifying glass inside that US Army fingerprint dusting kit I found back in May.

Gaaaaaah! Feckin' eedjits!

That is common to all drive sizes and is called, quite literally, "Lock-On." :)

Ya done good, pilgrim!

PotY 4 You ****.jpg

Well, if you're going to get one, and your first is the 2019 Picker of the Year Trophy ****-O-Meter gauge (built by @BlueBomber, and the button actually works!), you're doing pretty dang good in GS thread terms!
Glad to see my creation getting use, and I agree with Lugz' assessment: you ****, Madjik Man! 3jakes gets one too, just for sheer volume at pocket-litter prices!

Drove 57 miles into Georgetown for an estate sale. The gentleman was quite the hobbist and had tons of Snap-On, SK, and other brand names mechanic tools all the way through 3/4". I didn't really find much I wanted to keep but ended up spending $194 on stuff to flip to further fund the collections.

My favorite, 18" Diamalloy for $10
IMG_4219.jpeg

$40 bag full of Snap-On wrenches.
IMG_4217.jpeg

$20 for a full set of 9-21mm SK flare nut wrenches. Probably sell for $120
IMG_4218.jpeg

Vintage -V- series Craftsman ignition wrenches. $8 - New Britain was free as they didn't recognize the brand
IMG_4215.jpeg

Craftsman and Dayton speed wrenches. $5 each. Dayton socket was free.
IMG_4221.jpeg

Proto screwdriver, Challenger screwdriver, Penncraft socket and Penncraft extension. $1 each
IMG_4216.jpeg

Ratchets were $5 each. Billings, Craftsman, Penncraft, P&C, and SK along with Williams sockets, $5 1/4" Snap On hinge handle and $3 on the Proto 4" pipe wrench.
IMG_4214 (1).jpeg

Overall lot. I also bought long needle nose (MAC) and a oil filter wrench (MAC) since I needed both. Paid $5 for a Vixen spark plug cleaner because I thought it was cool but will probably sell. Penens water pump pliers were $4 as well.

Nice haul Mr Itchie!

I drove over twice that distance in the last two days--three estate sales and four TOOs--but only have three $1 purchases to show for it.

1st -- Original Snap-on F-40 3/8" stubby driver. Strangely, it is marked with both 1956 and 1957 date codes.
Starrett No. 248 3/16" Pin Punch
Yankee 1/4" slot screwdriver bit

2nd -- New floor squeegee head

3rd -- Artisan 6" adjustable

Today's ES showed promise with a lot of antique wood planes but two guys beat me to the shelves they were on and started hoovering them up without looking at them. There were three Stanley 45 combo planes along with several wooden moulding planes and even some very large wooden jointer planes. After the two guys left to wreak havoc in another part of the grounds, I strolled over to see what was left. A fist-sized bundle of cutters for one of the combo planes jumped out at me. I took it over to the agent who was guarding the hold table with the combos and told him what they were and that if the guy that grabbed the planes was too dumb to know it, he was too dumb to own it. Of course, I then magnanimously tossed it to the agent who put it in the guy's pile. Good deed for the day...

That looks like a Packer Auto Specialty "RAY" socket set. Nearly complete. Missing only the ratchet, an extension, and a deep spark plug socket. They aren't super common, but they aren't super rare, either, and many examples do show up with a cool decal under the lid. The decal might be available as a repro. Unless it was peanuts, I probably would've passed to, but if you're curious, if you think you might have a chance to go back, and you'd like to see what they look like, we do have a Packer "RAY" thread down on the VB. See Index of Threads in Sticky. There's an ad for that set in post #1, but you may have to poke around a little, follow a few links to older sets. There're more than a few on GJ already. Well-spotted!

Estate sale this morning. A lot of overpriced stuff but I managed to pick these up for a reasonable price.

My neighbor and I went to Carson City, Minden and Gardnerville this morning. He picked up a NIB pressure washer off of a Craigslist ad. We then went to quite a few sales that produced very little, at least from my point of view. 83F19C48-7968-458F-B9A4-47C71886A2CB.jpeg91BD7E3F-33F9-45B5-BD69-8667E560EA31.jpeg2FB1B7B1-17E9-4C31-B64A-485A41862C1D.jpeg4D702376-EF78-44F0-8EC8-78947DF70F47.jpeg5A309240-AE35-4A44-9D43-297DB7D3460E.jpeg

Here is my haul from a sale I stopped at on the way home from work. The ad had a UniMat lathe for $450, so I was hoping for lots of fun tools, but it, and any fun tools were gone by the tIme I got there. I left work earlier than normal, and as I get there I pull out my phone for a flashlight, and someone had scheduled a meeting for 6 minutes in the future. Argh, quick run thru, grab one thing, and back to the car.

After the call, I returned and did a little more serious browsing, and grabbed the rest.

First up was the elusive front flap for a Kennedy tool chest, but no box in sight, thus dashing the hopes for fun tools. Got it cheap, so coming back was definitely in order. On my return, flashlight in hand, I poked through the other six tool boxes, the dresser used for garage storage, the built into the workbench hard to slide drawer, a few misc boxes of junk, and found the following,
L-R: Fairmount Ball Pein hammer, Pexto pliers with a nice beefy grip, Diamond pliers, Starrett Inside dividers (last two rusty on the flip side), box of 2" 6-32 screws, rectangular file with safe sides, knife edge file, 25' and 50' Lufkin tape measures, Drill chuck key, Hex drive socket set sporting patent 1788535, more hose washers, a Curb Feeler, and that rare beast, the solo Kennedy tool box front flap.

The hex drive socket set box is patent 1788535 to McNaught and Peterson. Need to poke back thru other threads to see who made it. The sellers felt that was the most valuable thing in my pile. Looks like there may have been a ratchet that went with that based on the patent pic.

The Lufkin Jr 25’ roll up tape was a fun find, so delicate, more info will show up in the tape measure thread.

patent 1788535 applied to the HOLDER on Indestro's models 1351 and 1451 1/2" hex drive "Handy" socket sets.

those PEXTO pliers are certainly interesting.

When I worked at the Yelm store (which only had two blocks of curb in the city), we sold more sets of curb feelers than all seven of the other stores combined. Go figure.

Minimal sales but one (the first) paid off a bit:

THE find for me is the Long C Craftsman DP vise; Pilers are marked IND-S-BELI and Pon. PA, and have a nice checked grip for such lightweight pliers, Crescent-Bridgeport pocket driver, Proto stubby, Plvmb DBE, 2 Hose ends (still no dupes!), a Buck honing stone, Silver polish/restorer, and a door stop

Yes! I’d like to find one or two of those myself, though ideally, Craftsman.

If I hadn’t recently bought a crowntop-stickered version, I might have considered this eBay offering of a Long C vise.
The pliers are interesting. Can you post closer views of the stamped logo and grip pattern? They look from here to be made by Harrold Tool & Forge of Columbiana OH. Having trouble relocating online references (like Tool Archive), but I think I recall they were OEM for pliers for a PA company (as well as the toyish pliers Sears sold in Happi-Time tool sets). Here is a Harrold Tools thread on them, which could use a bump.

EDIT - There, I bumped it.

That BIN vise looks to be the same vise in a bit less condition.

Here are the pics of the pliers - I'm putting them into my camp gear. I kind of like them grips have a good feel. The jaws almost look like cheap stamped steel but the grips are clearly forged. :dunno: jaws are in decent shape adn narrow which sometimes is handy.

Outlaw--that Craftsman D/P vise was made by Palmgren, certainly before they went overseas. A great find any day of the week from one of the better makers of work holding devices.

Tom B.

Yep that's what I was thinking too, I hadn't had a chance to make comparisons, yet, but Palmgren makes sense an I know they did later.

I think the pliers say something closer to “IND-S-BELT PGH. PA” (Pittsburgh, Pa). Columbiana is not far (about an hour by car), and I think there is a connection.

I just posted some marked HARROLD on that thread. 70D0D356-0AE6-4240-841A-BFFC92B1AC44.jpeg9FB36332-4D33-479E-818F-ACFBA42C4147.jpeg

Oh-boy, Don…That SDF logo just keeps coming back to haunt the living, doesn’t it? Here’s Lugz’s naked PH handle SD. That logo popped up again this year, but I don’t recall on what.

I‘ll be able to see the wrench markings better after it comes out of the evaporust.
There is a resemblance to some Dunlap screwdriver handles but not quite close enough, I’m afraid. The ball on the back of my Dunlap drivers looks like a separate piece.

Overall, I agree with 3bay. I don’t purposefully collect Dunlap, so I don’t have any examples at present, but I feel that I’ve seen D-branded screwdrivers where the red is a stain or painted effect, and not a separate piece. Possibly, I’ve seen variants of that handle, maybe green knob instead of red, and maybe they were non-Sears brands. Of course, Dunlap is not a manufacturer, any more than Sears is, so your original question is not answered, even if it had “DUNLAP” stamped on it. But if a manufacturer-branded example should turn up, or if the OEM for those Dunlap drivers were known (maybe it is?), I would think this one is an example. I looked in Bridgeport and Forsberg catalog pdfs, and saw nothing similar.
Is the separate nature of the red bulb your only objection, or are there other details that don’t quite match?

I found a CL ad for an estate sale yesterday with nothing but furniture advertised but since it was 5 minutes away I gave it a shot. I walked right into the open garage and once I saw a work bench I knew there would be a vise. Found this little Scout 3 1/2" vise (I believe made by Wilton) bolted down and when they said it was for sale I unbolted it. Also found the Black and Decker box which appealed to me for some reason and the SK Sherman Kove box with leather handle which is in very nice condition. There was a Stanley USA ratchet and an old oiler in it so she threw them in all for $30.

I next went to another sale advertised with tools and there wasn't much. As my son and I were about to leave he asked if he could get a Hess Monster truck he saw on the table. The man said $1 and I grabbed it for him and then asked about the Craftsman crown top box I saw underneath the table the truck was on. I didn't really need/want it but I had to ask. He said $1 and I couldn't get the $$ out of my pocket fast enough.

Admittedly my sample size is not very large. The shank end of the handles are a very close match. I guess the question is who was supplying Sears with the Dunlap drivers? I have a few of the Sears branded screwdrivers somewhere. I’ll have to do a comparison with those.

A few acquisitions from last week and yesterday:

First is this heritage top box, saw it on CL for $25 and had to grab it even though I really don't need it and have no space for it. These don't come around very often in my area, at least not that I see. Just a bit of surface rust on the bottom, otherwise it's in really nice shape.
IMG_4315.jpg

IMG_4316.jpg

This batch came from an estate sale that was very picked over by the time I got there. Wish someone hadn't taken a grinder to the Duro combo, grabbed the Filsons just because, then there's a P&C 2814 DOE, Superrench tappet, and a set of Kleins. $6 if I remember correctly.
IMG_4322.jpg

This is another flea market batch. SK Wayne 1/2", a couple of interesting "Auto-Kit" wrenches, I grabbed the Fulton DOE without looking at it closely as I assumed it was a Long C like the one below it. Wizard combo, Plomb 3026 and modified 3430, and a couple Lectrolite DBEs. The stuff on the left is VlChek, the sockets are SK, Duro, and Bonney. I probably paid $10 for this but honestly I can't remember.
IMG_4323.jpg

Another $8 or $10 flea market batch. Duro Chrome 1/2" rat and 2016 circle X DBE. The extension is P&C, SK Wayne 3/8" rat, I assume the group of hex drive sockets on the left are Indestro/Duro. The 1/2" drive stuff to the right of that on the top row looks Indestro/Duro to me but I can't quite place the knurling, which looks almost Bog like. Then at the bottom is a yet to be identified wobbler, Craftsman BE, CARbureTER, SK, and dual branded Penens/Challenger.
IMG_4325.jpg

This batch came from an estate sale for $10. B-52 3/8" rat in nice shape, I usually grab the craftsman spinners for sets, a few SK 3/8" drive hex keys, =v= hinge, and an interesting Snap on 9/32" extension that's E dated.
IMG_4326.jpg

This sale was a bit of a disappointment as I pulled up on a completely packed hoarder garage but the guy said he hadn't pulled any of the automotive tools out yet and wouldn't be doing so for a few weeks. It was total picker heaven in there and the guy had like 6 Mercury Cougars parked under the trees in varying states of mold. Anyway I paid $14 for the 151 USA spokeshave and the 220 block plane. I didn't look at the block carefully and only bought it because I thought it was a 60 1/2...of course it's not and I noticed later that the throat is chipped. Oh well, it'll be good for parts.

Finally, dragged the kids to a few sales before their soccer games yesterday. Got the Craftsman axe in great shape with original handle for $2 and then a few other things in the pic below. Went to one sale that had some nice old SK diamond offset DBEs but the guy running the sale waited for me to dig them out of a tool box and then when I went to buy them told me he wouldn't separate any of the stuff from the box, which he decided was worth $100! He literally was pointing out to me that the tools were "antiques" as I was digging them out and didn't bother to tell me he wouldn't separate until afterwards. Douchebag. Oh well, on to the next.

Everything in here but the rat came from the same sale as the axe, $3 for the Herbrand combo, Craftsman combos, and =v= deep socket set. The Par X 1/2" rat came from another sale and was $2.
