Auto swap meet finds. It was a good pliers and wrenches day.

The old timers were about two steps ahead of me because I set out late. I missed a 1/4” Oxwall socket set with the Craftsman look-alike ratchet by 2 seconds. The buyer tried paying with a 50 and the seller wasn’t happy. I was crossing my fingers that the deal would fall through but it didn’t.

Little while later I approached a vendor as two guys were loading two buckets of tools into their truck. I wish I didn’t see it, but sticking out the bucket was a Blackhawk 3/4” drive handle. I asked the old guy if he was selling anything and he gave a firm NO!

Here‘s what I found, mainly from a couple vendors that were nice and easy to buy from.

-A bunch of Vanadium Tool Co. combos
-a couple NASA of similar Ohio style v- notch manufacture
-Pliers: Dasco Eagle Claw, Whitaker, Boker, New Britain, Klein, Utica
- Mustang 1/2” ratchet
- Bonney reefer wrench
-extensions: Indestro, Craftsman, Proto
-sockets: Duro-Indestro, pair of Plomb
-spinners: Action and Trutest
-Snap-On stubby
-nice Ford script L socket wrench made by Mossberg
-a few older Craftsman combos and dbe
-misc wrenches: Chromium Vanadium, Bonney Zenel, Harley Davidson pair, Williams, New Britain, Walden Worcester.

It looks like you’ve found a fairly rare chrome plated D-I socket. There is only conjecture about why those exist. I‘ve found some over the years but not often. 2A6DF86F-E9E6-423B-B5F1-C6050E76C564.jpeg

I guess it is. That was my first thought as well, that they’re usually not chrome when I see them. I wonder which ratchet they accompanied.

I’ve posted in the past that my guess is that they had tons of the plain finish D-I marked sockets left when the war ended. They may well have chrome plated them and put them in special sets. If that was the case they would likely have come with one of these ratchets in either Indestro (pictured) or similar Duro Chrome.

Today's listings look dismal unless I drive a long ways, bur I received these bags yesterday from an on-line Surplus; Original use was Belgian Army Gas Mask Bags, but the fir small early lanterns well. this older 30's/40's Coleman 242 single mantle lanterns are a perfect fit, and even my 1930's single mantle Sears Jr. (made by Prentiss Wabers) its even though its vent brim is a bit larger.

now that I know the Jr fits, I wish I'd have bought 3... The side storage pouches go down past the globe, so planning on some thin 3 layer corrugated cardboard, there for globe protection adn longer pieces front and rear. there is even a top storage, -maybe mantles?:

Went to an estate sale advertised for a 9 am start with no early birds and tools available. Upon arrival at 8:45 am there was already 20+ cars in the street and a ton of people inside . I headed right for the garage and two older gentlemen (known dealers) were in front of me rifling through the hand tools like absolute animals. The second guy was all over the first guy practically right up his ***. The guy behind me and I were laughing about it and he even commented that they probably didn't even know what the hell they were looking at and were just looking for brand names. The second guy then found a rivet gun in a leather pouch and threw it aside towards me like it was a piece of garbage. I picked it up and it was a nice USA made rivet gun in a leather belt pouch. He tells me that it's not the original pouch and I proceeded to show him that the pouch had the same name on it as the tool and it most definitely was original. He was pissed that he missed it and walked away lol. Finally it was my turn and I located a pair of USA Peterson Vise Grips and spring loaded crescent needle nose pliers. Then I found a small blue tool bag on the floor right where the previous animals had been grazing. I opened it up and it was loaded with USA wrenches of all types and a few miscellaneous other USA tools. The second guy then came back in and was breathing down my neck looking over my shoulder in the bag. He saw a few of the goodies and asked where I found it. I told him "right where you just were" and smiled. He asked if he could look through it and i said "nah I'm taking the whole bag" which I hadn't originally intended to do but was now going to do. The guy originally behind me started laughing and second guy walked away. I went to pay for the tools and the lady told me how about $20 which is just what I was thinking. Good deal over all I'm thinking. Well I get home, empty the bag out and found a Snap On FV71M 3/8" ratchet so it was a great deal. Just goes to show that sometimes patience works out for us.

NYB . I love it when we get one up on the pushy, bully type guys. I often see it when there is a larger box/many drawers, some try to be respectful when someone is looking though the box, others seem to think its okay to push through and reach over others. They are just tools , but I've waited in line, waited for my opportunity to look,I'l let you know when I'm done.

Do I wish I was ahead of them and had first crack? Of course I do, but they beat me there and I am always prepared to wait my turn. I just can't stand when people act like animals and it always seems to be the tool guys for some reason.

Hopefully my message wasn't misunderstood due my to my poor writing, I was in no way directing at you, merely agreeing with you ,holding back, waiting is what most of us do. just in case anyone reads it another way.

"Lower right hand side is a T-handle puller with what looks like the head of a needle. Any ideas? ^^^"

That looks like a tubeless tire patch tool. It is used to push a strip of rubber into the hole that is leaking. A blob of glue is applied before shoving the plug in.
I thought of that but most tire plug tools I have seen/used are textured on the rod section. This is smooth but it very well could be for that.

Nope not at all. I 100% agree with you.

He asked if he could look through it and i said "nah I'm taking the whole bag"
My reply would have been to look him dead in the eye and ask: Would you let me look through it if it was yours? If he lied and said that he would, I would tell him I'm just not as nice a guy as you are.

Plus, now you have a nice little bag to carry to future sales!

Weather is finally warming up for people to have yard sales. Not much tools today. The small sears/craftsman saw was $10. The subs with the box were $20, (Sony Xplode 1200) and the 2 head units were $5 each. I'm going to thump 80's music in my car for under $40.

CT, that's an interesting variant of the hand crank grinder. I wonder if it had a specific use case, and if the small wheel was intended?.

Not much happening around here. I only found two sales that mentioned tools plus we got a late start. The first sale was local and there weren’t many tools but my co-pilot found a couple things for the granddaughter. I usually don’t talk about price but we were charged the exorbitant price of $1.00 for everything. 0360DBCA-E2AE-4E51-88F5-F9A1C3FDB970.jpeg76D7890A-8C8F-49CC-A984-2051E04A3DCD.jpeg2DAE399A-CA46-426B-878F-5BDC52DE740E.jpeg
The next sale was 1/2 hr away in Martinez, CA. As usual, the seller said that quite a few tools went right when they opened. We ended up with an old DeWalt hammer drill set with a working battery, some NOS Irwin and Craftsman auger bits. The rusty screwdriver bit is a Millers Falls and a few basement screens. The gas can spout is postwar.93FB1821-E3F8-4215-8E26-967F570E044B.jpeg0D39AD2B-B31B-41C1-A60F-FFE295907EF6.jpeg2F5EFF91-B1D3-44AF-93CD-15734C3B76A9.jpeg
While we were in Martinez we stopped by for a visit with an old friend with a huge car and motorcycle collection that seems to keep growing. I wanted to get a picture of his WW2 command car. 7F2D7701-DCC7-4B68-938B-E3AD8F9CABE4.jpeg
As usual, we were overwhelmed by his collection.

The gas can spout is postwar.93FB1821-E3F8-4215-8E26-967F570E044B.jpeg0D39AD2B-B31B-41C1-A60F-FFE295907EF6.jpeg2F5EFF91-B1D3-44AF-93CD-15734C3B76A9.jpeg
While we were in Martinez we stopped by for a visit with an old friend with a huge car and motorcycle collection that seems to keep growing. I wanted to get a picture of his WW2 command car. 7F2D7701-DCC7-4B68-938B-E3AD8F9CABE4.jpeg
As usual, we were overwhelmed by his collection.

That Victor is pre 1920 as 1920-1934 was the Sweetheart logo era, but after Stanley bought the Jersey-Victor line , so narrowly, 1915 -1919.
Wikipedia

The Stanley Works was founded by Frederick Trent Stanley in 1843, originally a bolt and door hardware manufacturing company located in New Britain, Connecticut.

The Stanley Rule and Level Company was founded in 1857 by Frederick Trent Stanley's cousin, Henry Stanley, also in New Britain. In 1920, this company merged with the Stanley Works, and continued operating as its hand tools division.[2]

(edit) I read that vise as Stanley erasing the word "Jersey" from it's history.
Seems to happen all the time in the tool world.

The vise was designed by JG Baker, who also designed some Bonney vises, hence a family resemblance Lugz noted.
PJ Leavens Mfg Co, Vineland NJ, manufactured it until Stanley Rule & Level bought them out in 1911. That mfgr is marked on the spindle head and the model and patent date is marked on the anvil surface. It would be cool to find one with Pat Apd For (1907).
Stanley Rule must have renewed the 1908 patent in 1915; I have one with just the first date, but I don’t think I have one with just the renewed date.
As noted above by Outlaw and akasrick, the two Stanleys merged in 1920.
The closest American facsimile I have seen of this vise was made by Luther Hdw Mfg Co, presimably after the 1915 renewel ran out.

Baker had patents for some of these vises improvements. Designed predates his coming into the picture. IMO.
