Mix equal parts : Turpentine, Denatured Alcohol and Boiled linseed oil together into a container. Apply liberally to a small area and scrub with something with some bite/texture - he recommended burlap - I use green scothbrite pads. Wipe off goop and continue.
I have used this mixture several times with success to clean and even out the finishes on wooden machinist chests. You don't get a factory finish but it's pretty nice.
I'll have to try that out. I have a dulled 3 blade pocket knife I've used as a "gentle scraper" for that so much I refuse to refresh the edge! Its about perfect!
I generally start with Murphy's oil soap however. I've had good luck with it, particularly for grease/grime and nicotine. If it jsut gets sticky, the above knife comes out.
