Mix equal parts : Turpentine, Denatured Alcohol and Boiled linseed oil together into a container. Apply liberally to a small area and scrub with something with some bite/texture - he recommended burlap - I use green scothbrite pads. Wipe off goop and continue.

I have used this mixture several times with success to clean and even out the finishes on wooden machinist chests. You don't get a factory finish but it's pretty nice.

I'll have to try that out. I have a dulled 3 blade pocket knife I've used as a "gentle scraper" for that so much I refuse to refresh the edge! Its about perfect!

I generally start with Murphy's oil soap however. I've had good luck with it, particularly for grease/grime and nicotine. If it jsut gets sticky, the above knife comes out.

This box was 100% knife scraped, finishing with Murphy's:

Alinc100 - Many years ago I got a really dirty Union machinist chest at an auction and posted on a WW forum and received the following advice for cleaning up wood cases.

Mix equal parts : Turpentine, Denatured Alcohol and Boiled linseed oil together into a container. Apply liberally to a small area and scrub with something with some bite/texture - he recommended burlap - I use green scothbrite pads. Wipe off goop and continue.

Cheers

Jim
Jim , I'll try your recommendation, I believe I have a similar formula already mixed up as a shop brew wipe on varnish. I've coated tool handles,my benchtop and my vise jaws with it. BLO,Turpentine and naptha/min spirits/denatured alch, its been so long since I mixed up a jar ,I've forgotten the recipe,so it is likely I might have all the ingredients on-hand. I'm using a product called Plush from Mohawk Finishing . It seems to help clean up pretty well .These pics are a Union I started to clean up over the winter:

Went to a small local flea market I've been trying to get to the whole summer. It was actually better than expected. Not too many tools but I managed to find a few goodies.

Snap On A160A (not sure what it's for) and a Blue Point CF-7 valve tool for $3, 1970 Yankees year book for the collection for $8, rubber firetruck for $2, and the 1964 NYS license plate for $3. If anyone has any info on the tools I'd appreciate it.

Estate sale ($15): Craftsman Handy Chart of Common Fasteners; Mystik no. 2 grease; Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Co. 25" miter saw; Simonds no. 83 Plumbers saw nail-cutting blade w/ a 1896 Disston saw handle; Clamp of some type???; Imperial scout knife; Winfield Cover Co. leather hat.

The clamp is unusual and I'm not sure what you would bolt it to.

Went to the last day of a 4 day sale. Most stuff was “anything you can fit in a bag for $10” and I got these two switches and silicone spray, my mom got a bunch of books.

This Friday and Saturday our local humane society had their semi-annual rummage sale. It's a day and a half event in a building at the fairgrounds and gets a lot of donations to support the humane society. I try to get to it early, and found a few things this time. Sometimes I get some real treasures, but this year I figure it was worth my time, about an hour or so, but nothing special. A draw knife that needs new handles, some heavy duty pegboard hangers, a pair of Channellocks, some made in USA drill bits, and a Stanley tape in metal case. The drawknife is marked Jennings & Griffin MFG Co. NY No.42 and should be a good user, as if I needed another drawknife. The brass Yankee No 30A screwdriver came from a garage sale we drove by--only thing of any interest at the sale.

Doing some research on one of my finds from Sat.: the Ibbotson Brothers carving knife (I don't think the fork is part od a set, It may be of an age, or close to it with the knife however)

The keys are the company name and the "Globe Works" under it: (The V (crown R) over doesn't hurt, (Victoria regina).

Ibbotson & fork.jpg

Ibbotson Markings.jpg

The Globe works was built in 1824, completed in 1825, "The Globe Works was commissioned and constructed for ‘Ibbotson and Roebuck’, and was completed in 1825"

Roebuck left and the company was renamed "Ibbotson Brothers", until 1837 when one brother left - so this was made between 1827, and 1837! I think this is the oldest piece if edged steel I have. (186 YO minimum) Certainly for knives, bayonets adn swords!

And dged is the operative word, this thing is thin, and still very sharp! You can see its been sharpened near to death!

welding ground clamp.
Here's a closer look. The screw handle has the number 13B embossed into it. I don't recognize the makers mark, could it be "V" for Victor. It has a pretty elaborate model no. MB613A. When I push it into google image it comes back as, "Antique whale tail old iron clamp" and valued at an optimistic $199 , which has been faithfully copied onto the only one I can find on fleabay. Still a curious piece of cast iron.

Kennedy toolbox from Craigslist. Is there an easy way to get rid of the remaining felt? I was going to replace it with toolbox liner.

I've been told a heat gun, and a dull putty knife, will scrape factory felt right off. Redone felt may not work the same way, unknown glue issues. Let us know if it works, I have a few queued up.

Haven't tried on a metal machinist chest ,but on wooden ones I've poured hot water on the felt and loosened the felt/glue considerably.

On wooden ones, it was often hide glue holding the felt down, so steam or hot water would help.

Kennedy does not sell glue that I could find, Gerstner sells a hide glue

I do have a wallpaper steamer I could try instead of the heat gun…

I believe the glue is hide glue. I have used plain warm water (added Simple Green for odor), and let it soak in the sun. When it’s ready, most peels off.
Loose paint and paint with rust under it will also lift off.

I'm pretty sure that is a ground clamp. The serrated anvil is a dead giveaway. And other than the ring connector instead of a threaded hole it matches a lot of modern clamps.

Nothing at the ReStore today, but that's ok. I took a $20 gamble on a Facebook Marketplace post as one of the ratchets looked like a SK 45170. Turned out to be an older made in Taiwan Pittsburgh ratchet/socket set (two of them actually), nothing too spectacular. However, after briefly going through everything in the toolbox my $20 gamble turned out good. A lot of Craftsman, Bonney, Williams, New Britian, Proto, Matco and a pair of Vise Grips. And the toolbox is a Kennedy too. There was one SK piece in the lot, a 3/8 extension. I did get an SK piece after all. :ROFLMAO:

Yep, all that for $20. After a thorough sorting, there is a good bit more than I realized and hardly any of it is foreign. I'll be selling off most of it, but there's a decent amount of items I'll be keeping. I am kinda bummed the ratchet wasn't an SK, that was the whole reason I bought everything. However, the two Pittsburgh sets (SAE & MM) I'll be keeping as loaner sets so my good tools don't disappear.

What is this? Does this have any value?
