Here is one I have never seen before. Did Blackhawk actually make this ratchet this way or did someone convert it? The model number is for a 1/4" ratchet.

Just received the Blackhawk ratchet fro the seller on ebay. This thing is mint!

Looks to be a factory piece, sourced from New Britain from the looks of it. Nice shiny chrome, factory black on the drive.

Matches my New Britain NM-45 except for the drive size.

Pics to follow.

The seller of the Blackhawk ratchet e-mailed me over the weekend about these ratchets, looks like he has a stock pile of them. Of course I bought three of them. These are the first from New Britain that I have seen, saw one from Matco when they sourced from NB, but none by the compaines owned by NB. Kinda rare little speciman right there.

mac use to make a low profile adpater set. 1/4 to 3/8, 3/8 to 1/2, 1/2 to 3/4. they were a round disc w/ the male drive end. the ratchet would slide into the back side/female of the disc, and then insert into the socket. for all intensive purposes, it didint add any depth/length to the socket--maybe 2mm thickness.

I have a set of those adapters. I believe a company called Starr used to make them. I got mine at NAPA in a NAPA branded package. I believe they are discontinued but I have seen them there on the shelves recently.

Grey Pneumatic sells a similar set of adapters now.

Here is a few more. I only paid about 17.46 for the new proto 3/8 in a 1/4 body from grainger, so if you are looking for a cheap one that is the way to go and made in the USA. That grainger part number is 1AH61. That was a year ago as well when I bought it.

I won one of these ratchets today and the seller is indeed a nice guy and has some more of them left so if anyone else wants one take a look at his other ebay auctions. He has quite a few other NOS quality USA made tools as well for what looks to be reasonable prices.

So whats the deal with the 3/8 in a 1/4 ratchet? 1/4 sockets are smaller than 3/8 so why would you use a 3/8 socket on a 1/4 body, doesn't that defeat the purpose?

Anyway, I like my little 1/4 below. It's gearless and reverses by pushing the head thru. There's basically no resistance, saved my **** a couple of times.

Allot of times you need to get into a small space that has a fastener that is larger than your largest size 1/4" socket.

Forgive the noob question, but can I create one of these with my old Craftsman ratchets? My 1/4" ratchet is in dire need of a rebuild, and this seems like a good opportunity to put a 3/8" kit into it. If it will fit. Has anybody done it?

Here is my Cornwell TRF32 (orange handle). Looks like it is factory, the 1/4" frame with 3/8" drive.

I bought the Blackhawk from this seller, and I got to work on it a little bit.

first, I replaced the retaining ring with a better, thicker one, so there's no slack on the gears.

then, machined a handle out of delrin.

Very nice work. I to replaced the oem ring with a new internal snap ring and it made the whole ratchet allot tighter. I have to ask though why add the delrin handle? It really defeats the purpose of having such a small ratchet with small handle in 3/8" size to get into small places.

After I seen these pics I had to have one of these. It came in yesterday. Have not used it yet but I think I love it already.

Agreed. I picked one of the 3430's up not long ago myself, absolutely love it. I don't think there's a better 3/8" in 1/4" body ratchet out there for the money, especially in the round head setup.

I picked this up at the flea market the other day. I am guessing someone just put a 3/8" ratchet rebuild kit into a 1/4" Craftsman VQ-43174 ratchet? Regardless it made a pretty neat little fine tooth 3/8" ratchet.

The Wright compact 3/8" drive ratchets are NOT dual pawl .
They are all 45 tooth single pawl and are listed for low torque applications.

There other round head ratchets are 41 tooth with double pawls effectively giving you 82 tooth action, but not the compact 3/8" drive ones listed below.

3430 Round head 45 tooth 4 3/4" contour chrome handle
33430 (same as above except black industrial finish)
3440 Round flex head 45 tooth 5 1/2" contour chrome handle

3432 Rebuild kit for the 3 ratchets listed above

See pages 136 and 137 of the Wright catalog for reference.

So i was back at HF today and took more pictures:

The green model is a HF stubby 1/4" Roto. The other two are the T-handle linked above. Notice the roto head design and size is the same for all, but the ratchets are offered in 3/8" and 1/2" drive. All you gotta do is disassemble the 3" ratchet from the T-handle. These retail for about $20ea.
