The Wright compact 3/8" drive ratchets are NOT dual pawl .
They are all 45 tooth single pawl and are listed for low torque applications.

There other round head ratchets are 41 tooth with double pawls effectively giving you 82 tooth action, but not the compact 3/8" drive ones listed below.

3430 Round head 45 tooth 4 3/4" contour chrome handle
33430 (same as above except black industrial finish)
3440 Round flex head 45 tooth 5 1/2" contour chrome handle

3432 Rebuild kit for the 3 ratchets listed above

See pages 136 and 137 of the Wright catalog for reference.

Ouch. Didn't mean to offend with my ignorance. Post corrected. :(

I bought the ebay Blackhawk. Standard New Britain inside. 45 teeth in the head with 9 on the pawl. I put it next to Penncraft and Mac versions, which both have 60 teeth in the head and 12 on the pawl.

The 3/8" drive rocks a bit because of the crappy clip that is used. It looks like a spiral clip that has been cut. The Penncraft uses an internal snap ring, and the Mac uses a spiral clip. In the 3rd pic the oem cut clip is on the left, and the right is the snap ring from the Penncraft.

I will never find a spiral clip at the local hardware stores, so I bought an internal snap ring. Problem is I cannot compress the snap ring to get it into the groove because the "ears" hit the large 3/8" drive. This is not a problem on the Penncraft because the drive is 1/4". Don't know how SCscoutguy was able to do it. In the last pic the snap ring is not seated in the groove because I cannot compress the ears. This must be why the Blackhawk does not have a standard issue snap ring - it will not fit because of the large drive. Why Stanley took a spiral clip and cut it, is a mystery.

So I took the spiral clip out of the Mac to put in the Blackhawk, and then I was going to put a snap ring in the Mac. But the spiral clip from the Mac is too thin and the Blackhawk is still going to rock.

I would like to find a thick spiral clip, but that is just something I can't find locally.

I will try to get a picture of it tomorrow but I I got a internal snap ring from the bottom of a glass jar that was in my grandpa's shop for probably 60+ years so I have no idea what its original application was. It was extremely difficult to compress like you have encountered but I was able to get the majority of the ring in the groove and then I used a punch to knock the ends of it in.

The correct term is spiral retaining ring.

One company that makes them is Smalley

There is a demo here of the Spirolox Retaining Ring by Smalley being used in a ratchet
http://www.smalley.com/retaining_rings/application_samples.asp

they have a sizing link at the bottom of this page:
http://www.spirolox.com/ring_table_us.php

Some companies that make them:

American Ring & Tool Company
http://www.americanring.net/rings_spiral.aspx

Rotorclip
http://www.rotorclip.com/spiral_retaining_rings.php

Here is one place that carries them

Don't know if they still make it but I have a Snap On FC936 that I occasionally use.
EDIT- Yes, they do still mnake it http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...=24687&supersede=&store=snapon-store&tool=all

I guess you didn't look at the results from your search too closely, that is a FC72 , the FC936 is discontinued.

If you search for a discontinued item part # on the Snap On site it will automatically take you to the current / updated version if they make one.

The FCF936 is also discontinued , replaced by the FCF72, see link.

Well I'll be. Thanks for pointing that out.

I was reading this thread, pulled my ratchet out, and replied with the number.
After posting I wondered if it was still available so I plugged in my number on the SO site and up popped a picture and description of what I have. I then posted the edit with link without noticeing the part number changed.

Any chance you could file the ears on the snap ring to make it work?

If I filed the ears enough to get it in then I would not have the holes for snap ring pliers.

Played with it some more and no luck. I tried the spiral clip from the Mac in the Blackhawk. It fits, but the clip is not thick enough and the drive rocks too much. I thought I would also stick the original Blackhawk clip on top of the Mac clip, but then what would I use for the Mac? Turns out I cannot get a snap ring in on the Mac. Guess that is why the Mac uses a spiral clip instead of a snap ring.

I think I need to find 2 spiral clips to give me the thickness, unless I can find 1 clip that is really thick.

Correct.. they are Single Paw and to be honest all the 3/8" in 1/4" body ratchets are for Low torque. I read from one of Snappy dealers that FC Snap on Ratchets where one of the Most Warranted Ratchets out there.
