Wild ride indeed. I thought it would never end. I came out without a scratch.

Thanks for the compliments. I really like the way the porch is coming. I still need to install the can lights and tongue and grove cedar ceiling under the porch.

Construction on this one has slowed due to the weather. So I went back to working on my detached garage makeover next to the house. Working on two buildings at the same time is starting to wear on me.

Great looking build!!

I have a question for ya: How much room is there between the garage door and the bottom of the trusses? Are you using low head room OHD tracks?

I'm trying to design a 12' - 6" eave height pole barn with an 11' tall over head door.

thanks.

There is 17" from the bottom of the door frame to the bottom of the truss. The tracks are just standard I believe. The tracks on the rear door are 8" below the truss.

I do have a problem with the cable spool as it is slightly higher than the bottom of the truss. When i finish the ceiling someday, I will have to build a pocket above the springs.

Wow, thanks for showing me those pics. So what is your eave height of the building, 15'+?

What style of OHD are you wanting for the front?

The wall height from the bottom of the trusses to the bottom of the skirt board is 16'. I am going to lose 7" of height because of foam board and concrete. That's why I have 17" from top of garage to bottom of trusses.

The eave height is less than 16' because of the overhang. I have 24" overhangs so that drops the eave about 10-11" from the bottom of the trusses.

The roofers started today. The weather finally warmed up enough to lay shingles. They almost got one side done. They will continue tomorrow and the next day.

With regards to the garage doors, I am going to have to accept the doors that were delivered. I had wanted carriage house style doors with a single arched top across each door. The problem is that they don't make a single arch on doors 14' wide. They do a double arch. The garage door company that I am dealing with should have known that and told me before I ordered them. It seems the only way to get the single arched top is to pay double the price and get a custom door made. I checked with other companies and have gotten the same story.

I began painting the door's outside edge before they go up next week.

I am choosing to have a continuous ridge vent installed on the roof. This type of vent is superior to traditional turtle vents in many ways. They allow more air to flow through and they get rid of roof acne.

The vent I chose is called the Shingle Vent II. It has a unique baffle to keep the elements out of the attic while allowing air to flow.

The underside has a filter to keep dirt and debris out.

Here it is installed. You can see the baffle on the outside edge.

The roof is now complete.

While the roofers were working I decided to get some painting done. Especially the eaves around the porch and the wall under the porch roof. I also started painting the garage doors. It is easier to paint them before they are put up. I mainly wanted to paint the edges only so that I wouldn't have to cut-in around the stained door frames but I got a little more than that done.

The porch is now all painted and shingled.

The garage door installers finished installing the garage doors today. Now I just need to finish painting them.

They pointed out a potential problem with the clearance between the door and the light fixture I installed. They thought maybe the bulbs would be hit by the door while it goes up. I installed the bulbs and all is well. It's close though.

The electricians came this week and installed the main disconnect and meter panel. The city inspected it gave me the little green sticker so now the power company can come and install the wire from the transformer. I think I will be waiting for a while on that. Everytime I call, the guy at the power company gives me the same story and says he will call me back. Trouble is he never calls me back.:(

After it gets too dark and too cold to paint I started installing some lighting circuits.

So are you in the middle of two shop builds at once, or am I confused? Either way, job on both.

Yes two shop builds. The 36 x 48 makeover started first. I just didn't start posting it until I began the 36 x 80 shed build. Plus I am about done with another garage makeover to the attached garage for the wife so she has a place to do crafts. Its all I have done recently.

I have been busy running wires and hooking up outlets and lights in the freezing cold temps each night after work. Good news is that I passed the rough inspection.

I also ran a plate vibrating tamper over the sand/gravel floor to compact it down better after the final grade was set. I lightly wet the ground as I tamped. The floor is now hard like concrete.

Finally received the outside light fixtures that I ordered. It took over a month to get them in. They are made by American Nail Plate (ANP). It's their warehouse style light. The arm and plate (against the wall) is aluminum.

I put these lights on their own switch and installed an astronomic timer so that they come on at sunset.

Time to finish the underside of the porch. I am going with 5" tongue and groove cedar.

First I stained the boards using Messmer's deck and fence stain. Staining first allows me to more easily stain the tongue and groove part so that as the wood shrinks it won't leave an unstained portion showing.

CIMG2529_zps93944f0e.jpg

I cut the first board at an angle so it butts up against the beam.

CIMG2544_zpsb71086ae.jpg

All I was finding for can light trim was white so I painted the eyeball light trim black.

CIMG2532_zps04f1d606.jpg

Ceiling is finished with the light trim installed.

I added some trim to the ceiling. I tried to cut the boards so that I didn't have to do trim but I thought it needed something to look more finished. I just used scrap pieces of the cedar tongue and groove and ripped it on the table saw.

Love both builds you have going on! Great attention to detail. What's the plan for the rest of your property? I'm not familiar with what grows well in your region. Looks like high desert/plain territory?

With the dry conditions, dirt is growing real well.:D I am a couple miles east of the foothills. With the drought we are having nothing is growing real well; but mostly drought tolerant plants and trees. I don't have a plan nailed down for the rest of the property yet. Water is scarce here so probably not a lot of grass. Maybe some field grass like rye or something.

Finishing up the last bit of electrical work. I wanted to hook a motion sensor to the recessed porch lights so I decided to use a motion sensor that I bought about 10 years ago and never used.

I recently found this sensor while organizing my cabinets during my other garage makeover. It is designed to be located near an existing porch light with a short cable running into the light box. The only problem is, with recessed lights I cannot use it as intended.

I am going to run the sensor wire into the switch box which requires that the sensor wire be lengthened.

Here is the motion sensor as it came out of the box.

CIMG2563_zps1728ab85.jpg

I quick trip to Home Depot to get a longer cable. It is a 3-wire stranded cable. All they had was 4-wire stranded but that will work.

CIMG2564_zpsb01def5f.jpg

I decided to change out the cable entirely instead of splicing it which meant I had to solder the new wire in.

CIMG2570_zpscccf813b.jpg

Here it is installed.

No updates yet. The weather turned cold, windy and snowy so I kinda packed it in for the winter.. aah I mean spring. I will be working on the stone and concrete next once the temps are higher overnight.

Plus I have been working on my other shop makeover. I will be posting some updates to that soon.

Well the weather started improving so I started forming up the sidewalk to the building.

CIMG2626_zps155c50a4.jpg

I dug a trench for a drain under the rain chain.

It just snowed? I'm moving to Wellington in October...this is going to quite a change from my Socal roots. Both of your projects look great!

The snow melted and left a lot of my forms warped. I had to redo some of them and got the concrete poured.

CIMG2637_zps796c7322.jpg

Now I can finally start applying the stone wainscot to the walls.

CIMG2639_zpsd43003f8.jpg

CIMG2658_zps888a9fa1.jpg

And begin the process of building out and finishing the porch posts.

CIMG2652_zpsd8140460.jpg

Ready for stone now.

Applying stone to these columns is a bit tedious. Lots of cutting.

CIMG2654_zpsd633391a.jpg

I had the pillar caps custom made with a grove in the bottom for rope lighting. Here I am gluing a plastic piece in the grove with silicone that will hold the rope light. I ran wire in the columns when I built them out.

Pillars and stone are done. I also built out the upper part of the pillars and wrapped them with cedar boards stained to match the beams and garage door frames.
