Oh how I wish I had the funds to pave our driveway. Well I guess if I didn’t spend so damn much on tools I would, but tools are probably better than a paved driveway.

Agreed. I was more broke when I had that house and was happy when I could get 2 semi loads of rock on it a year. Now I've got kids and a wife and realized I had far more disposable income then! Lol

I left mine 700 miles north. I dont miss any part of that

Great place to leave it....if it wasnt for all the family living around here I'd be farther south...not @Bob Heine far south but always enjoyed the scenery and weather around your neck of the woods.

Inlaws live in Vegas and thats a hell no, I have an oven I can stick my face in if I want, but I do get more tired of winters every year.

And then during monsoon season it's 1/2 paved , 1/2 water.

IMG_20190923_123725.jpg

Dang....how often does that happen...this a couple times a season or every couple of years kinda thing?

That's a once a year maybe to that extent yhere. But everytime is rains it's a muddy mess and some delivery drivers and such can't seem to grasp the concept of staying on the gravel so the yard ends up a tire tracked up mud pit that has to be scraped once the season is over.

We had lady claim she was lost and "just following Google" one time literally drove pinned out alllll the way around the house in a full circle. We were sitting eating lunch with my parents after church and my back is to the windows and my dad just very calmly says, there is a car driving through the back yard.....I almost thought it was a joke he was so calm. She was headed right for the septic field so my wife runs out no shoes through the mud, I come out the other way shorts and muck boots and a pistol, the lady probably had to go home and change her underpants after that hahaha. She about lost her phone that day. I asked her did you not once look up from your phone and notice you were driving next to a swimming pool and think to yourself hang on this might not be a road! Nope I was just following the line. 🤦 Icing on the cake, she buried her car like axel deep in the front yard on the way out and I had to get her out. I almost just got a beer and a lawn chair and said tow truck will be here in 4 hours.....

My wife is kinder than both of us hahaha.

I did tell her she needed to pay for fuel and several hours of my time to regrade the property once the ground dried up. She agree and gave me her phone number......but I'm sure you can guess, she never once answered and would just send it immediately to voicemail. I could have called from different numbers, I had her license plate number, etc, but my wife told me to just let it go and she was probably right in the end. It wasn't worth the time or energy when I always have other things to do.

@Boostingaz, I probably would have rented a large truck and taken a tour of her yard but I'm old and heavily insured.

I don't carry a phone with me but I keep a camera handy in the house for those occasions. Heard a loud noise out front and went to investigate. In front of my neighbor's house there was a car sitting sideways in the road with its roof caved in. The woman driving wasn't hurt and denied being on her phone. I immediately suspected she would blame the accident on me .
Ficus Removal 20.jpg
She had slammed into the street-side fender of the tree chipper being used to remove a huge tree from our back yard.
Ficus Removal 21.jpg
She hit the huge (5,660 lb.) machine hard enough to spin it 180-degrees in the grassy swale after running over the orange cone in front of it. The police used the cone to keep the next texter from hitting it again.
Ficus Removal 25.jpg
I walked back to my driveway and snapped a photo of her tire tracks in my lawn to head off her claim the machine was parked in the street.
Ficus Removal 24.jpg
When she made that claim, the police issued a parking ticket to the tree removal company. Eventually her insurance company settled and paid for the repairs to the chipper. Now I carry my cell phone with me when I'm out driving.

Not super eloquent at the moment, and not because I'm 2 bottles into the 11% beer in the fridge, too tired to do that. But a summation of current topics in my mind
  1. Kinda tired of 2022...it can leave whenever it wants
  2. @&$% cancer
It's not 100% diagnosed yet as we are still waiting on the specialist, but Father in law has 2 masses in his brain that aren't supposed to be there....and no masses they can find elsewhere...so yeah....****** hell. Has gone from a normal, working 62 yr old 2 months ago to some pretty dramatic behavior changes that had us pushing him into see doctor to suddenly getting imaging and admitting and now in the waiting game to hopefully see the specialist tomorrow....

We will hopefully be able to be thankful on Thursday that we find out it's treatable and full recovery is expected... until then we play the hurry up and wait game

I have no desire to move to Iowa, but would definitely be interested in seeing that "house".

Martin

It got listed yesterday...turns out listing a commercial property turned residential/commercial potential is more complicated than the avg house...many of the items needed to finish it off are included as well as the sellers weren't intending to sell this early but job change happened earlier than expected

Really sorry to hear that, Logan. I can relate. My mother-in-law (60 yrs old) has pancreatic cancer, and was diagnosed a week after my son was born a little over a year ago. What was supposed to be a joyous time for us was definitely clouded by that emotional rollercoaster, especially for my wife, who also carries the same genetic mutation that caused it. Not trying to write a sob story, it just hit on a personal note for me. It's definitely shocking when someone you thought was otherwise healthy starts having serious problems all of a sudden.

That being said, there's no way to know what you're dealing with until you get the full diagnosis, and it's my belief that it doesn't do any good to assume the worst. Easier said than done. But, there are benign brain tumors, and I personally know someone who survived brain cancer in college. Even if it is cancer, a diagnosis isn't the end, and it's hard to predict the exact course a disease will take in each individual case.

I agree with Bob that the best thing you can do is be emotional support for your wife and family. And I'm also hoping for good news for you.

Martin, $390,000.00 for a 4,400 square foot brick house seems like a bargain ($88/sf). The new two story concrete block house across the street from us sold for $2,280,000.00 ($425/sf) with similar amenities but including a 2-car garage). Seems like there's room for a garage somewhere on or in the Iowa property. Taxes on the Iowa place: $2094. Taxes on the Florida place: $31,931.
Curb appeal: Priceless!!!

And that 4,400 sq ft doesn't include the 3k sq ft on the 1st floor that could be added residential space or commercial space! Did I also mention there is a basement that isn't included in either of those square footages? As it was originally a peaking power plant, the (2) generators were on massive concrete pedestals so there is a full basement under it...maybe floor 10' or 12' below street grade with full access around the pedestals as that was where most of the power distribution gear/wiring was and was needed for service on the bottom side of the generators. $'s per sq ft it'll be tough to find cheaper space!

As to garage...there happens to be a building across the street....probably another 3 or 4k sq ft that was a former garage amongst other things with a roughly double wide, 4 or 5 car deep space that the sellers have and would likely be available for possession in the spring. It's currently full of stuff but would have plenty of space for both storage of parts/cars and a bay for active projects...or as GJ goes 2 bays for storage/parts/projects not yet started and working on the daily driver on the street side parking :)

@loganb sorry to read about your fil. Hope all goes well!

Thank you!
Prayers for a good diagnosis!

Much appreciated! No "diagnosis" yet but have more info then we did....update below
I f'n HATE cancer - lost both parents to it. I'm praying you get good news.

Very sorry to hear that...its one of those clubs nobody wants membership in and it's far to flipping full and a line out the door with new people getting forced into it. Using this analogy I think we are now in the club....but milling by the door and trying to figure out what group or table we are gonna hang out at

Logan, nothing else matters. Do what you can to support your wife and her mother because this is one of those real problems that money might not be able to fix. Here's hoping you get good news from the specialists.

I wish you weren't right here....but as usual you are. It was a surprisingly good last 48 hrs all things considered...update below

First off thanks for taking the time to share....so sorry to hear you're also going thru a similar situation on multiple levels there. I hope the no longer that little, little one helps to bring some smiles and joy to her and all around when it's needed most. The main driver to moving to Omaha(well after her office location being close and position cut) was to be closer to family, this isn't the type of scenario we wanted to be closer for...but you don't get to pick it so we take it as it comes.

Well it's been a bit of a whirlwind, but father in law went from almost unintelligible and baffling behavior to mostly "normal" in about 72 hrs....I love pharmacology.

Short story...swelling/inflammation from the masses appears to have been the cause for many of the changes in behavior...as steroids to reduce the swelling has remarkably improved his condition at a remarkable pace. He actually got discharged this afternoon and is home tonight and will have turkey and pie with family tomorrow...which compared to what we had on Monday is still hard to fathom

Now, we still don't know what it is. They believe it's originated in the brain which makes it brain cancer vs another type that spread to the brain. Biopsy is next step to determine exact type, however it's 2 weeks out due to backlog at the hospital he was admitted to so we have gotten a referral for a 2nd opinion at the premier cancer/brain surgery hospital in the area. Hopefully we can all agree on what medical team will be point moving forward and efficiently move to the official diagnoses and treatment plan stage of this. But had you told us on Monday he'd be home on Wednesday...we'd have suggested you get admitted too! Lots to be thankful for even in a crappy year

In related but not on topic...remember grade school germ lessons. Cover your mouth, wash your hands etc etc. After seeing how full this hospital is with teenagers and adults with RSV who need to be there, flu that regressed to pneumonia and they're now on oxygen...its not even December...lord help the healthcare staff and the patients when January hits.

When we were in the NICU, this was the preferred hand sanitizer of the NICU staff. They had 2 different types at all rooms/sinks but this was the one staff preferred due to being gentler on the skin. If it was good enough for premie babies its good enough for me was my logic, so this is what's at our sinks, in the cars and when I get a couple minutes will have at the door from garage to the house

Happy Thanksgiving too all and to all a good night!

Is that the (2) 24", (2) 50" and 2 coupler pack. I think it was like 179$? That is a smoking deal! I saw that. If you sign up for the emails they immediately shoot you a code for free shipping too. I not that long ago paid $70 each for 50" and $60 each for 24s.

That was the one! My first Bessey ones, I've got 4 Jorgy ones and lots of pipe clamps but was going to add some on the current sale at Lowes, but when I saw this deal had to go this route instead

Sorry for the troubling news around the holidays, hope you get answers soon!

Thank you sir...being home and mostly "back to normal" is a big improvement...hopefully this coming week we at least get a schedule for next several weeks and key appts on the book

Did get a bit done tonight...

20221125_204609.jpg

Gibs and original blades out and soaking in some Purple cleaner. Really aren't that dirty, but while it's out may as well clean them up.

20221125_205045.jpg

Going to need to find a sharpening service as the original knives aren't bad, just a few dings on 1 knife but will be nice to have a spare set

You will like the Bessey's. You gotta get some of the feet. They make the clamp pressure wider rather than so localized.

Bessey Pivot Jaws, PK2, red/black, (KR-AS) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001HSO6WW/?tag=atomicindus08-20

You can see them in action here.

Big XII Champions!

Martin

That was a fun game to watch! I was in school when we won the conference in 2003 and remember how crazy Aggieville(bar district) was and kinda thought for a second "Man it'd be fun to be there...." then I remembered I was old and can't do that anymore

Excited to see how they do against 'Bama in the Sugar Bowl and what this could lead to in coming years!

What's new in the hood?!

How is the family doing? Any better/updated news on FIL? 🙏

Nothing too exciting happening to speak of...

Few pieces showing up for an upcoming project...making 2 of them..1 for me and 1 for a gift. Hints for guessing on project...thats 2020 extrusion...will involve the 3d printer and will be used with pieces off the 3d printer...it's most but not all of the pieces but the important ones are there...well minus 1

20221204_171909.jpg

Neighbor and I pondered his cnc a bit on what to do for the work surface/spoilboard. He bought a couple of the desktops I acquired, just a question of best way to attach
20221204_165440.jpg

In my escape area its mostly sorting and tossing stuff out. Not a ton of time to work on anything but I have way too much stuff so it is often enough time to sort thru this or that and toss some things

As to the father in law, some questions got answered but more came up as we knew would be the case. He's got a care team/facility picked now and has chosen the next step/first step and its supposed to be scheduled as quickly as they can get it in but the surgeon said should be in December. Picking a "brain cutter" and giving the go ahead on next steps was the goal for this past week...so it was successful. There will be no biopsy, going straight to removal so we won't have a definitive diagnosis until a week or so after the surgery for removal as pathology does their thing in the lab....but at this point nothing is pointing to anything other than a "primary cancer" in the brain. He's at least getting more like himself(still can't drive due to vision) and he and my wife have the list of what needs to be done before the surgery(wills updated etc) so it's off to the races

He's married, but his wife had (2) aneurysms burst 5 years ago this month and we're fortunate she's recovered as much as she has, but her higher level thinking isn't there and she can't manage finances etc so my wife will get to pick up a lot of the household mangt stuff that a spouse would normally have in this scenario. She actually just moved back home this fall...so to get the goal of her back home to have this happening basically simultaneously...well ***** but we play the hand we are dealt.

It's at least not all bad news though. He has multiple options for major brain surgery within a 30 minute drive...growing up that would've been a 3 hr drive to get that. We are less than a 10 minute drive to their place from ours...and very fortunate my job is remote and I have an accommodating schedule so for the last week and probably a good part of this week I worked out of their basement on a folding table with a portable travel monitor, the laptop and a 27" I grabbed from another machine in the house....evidence below lol. Not as nice as my normal setup but it leaves the normal setup "intact" so at night after kids go to bed I can drop the laptop back in the dock and get a couple more hours in. He's going to try and work from home some this week which he's done at times in the past via remote access with his personal computer but has complained about speed etc so I upgraded it to 32 GB of RAM and have a new solid state hard drive that's been cloned off the existing and ready to drop in to hopefully speed up the experience and reduce operator frustration...will see how successful that is!

20221128_080900.jpg

P.S. Thanks for the addition to the Xmas list for the bessey feet!

Man you got me really thinking on that project 🤔. Is it some kind of gear/belt operated arm for the CNC or 3d printer? Totally stabbing in the dark......

That's good progress and news about the FIL having the option for surgery sooner rather than later. My grandfather passed away in 2019 from Lewy Body Dementia and it was so quick that hospice and palliative care was really the only option. It was hard watching one of the hardest working men you've ever seen in your life be reduced to being bed ridden and worse. I pray for the surgeons wisdom, steady hands and expertise for your FIL.

Congratulation to the Wildcats, as a TCU alum it turned out OK because we are in the big dance. Good luck against Alabama, I know if K-state plays the way they did against TCU they will win.

Pretty close! To repeatably used threaded connectors in printed parts you can use threaded inserts which install with a soldering iron but a challenge at times is keeping the soldering iron vertical/perpindular to the face of the part the insert is going in....so making a pair of "presses" to hold a soldering iron to aid in this:

insert press.jpg

Picture from Printables.com....link below for anyone interested in doing their own:

Full Disclosure: I think the linear rail/thk type rails are complete overkill for this and the "original" version without the rails is more practical...but what fun is that?

Thanks for commenting sir! I felt better about the outcome of the game on Sunday when the selection committee did what I thought they "Should" and had TCU in the #3 spot. They've been snubbed for a long time so excited to see them get the shot I think they deserve. If their QB Duggan recovers from that ridiculous performance he had on that final drive it should be a great game.

Cool! I'll probably end up building myself one sooner or later. My good friend Dave designed a retrofit for a small Dremel drillpress HERE that isn't as elaborate as what you're building. The counterweight setup is neat on yours!

Couple of updates with almost 0 garage relevancy

Thanks to everyone up north who kept the cold weather in the Dakotas and similar areas so that the moisture currently falling in Omaha is rain instead of snow. I much prefer clearing rain from the driveway... but stay safe and enjoy the snow!

With everything going on in the family and unknown holiday schedules I took the 2 kids back to the farm this past weekend so they could see their other grandparents and great grandparents. Also gave Mom a well deserved "blissfully quiet" 2 days and I'll admit they did far better traveling without a dedicated toy passer than I expected they would.

20221210_112633.jpg

Christmas tree got up...and this is about as decorated as its going to get. With an 18 month old ornaments on it worries me, and with life we don't have time right now to spend a couple hours decorating, then fighting the kids to leave it alone then undecorate it in January

20221212_214107.jpg

Wife got her Volvo back from body shop after being fixed from being rear ended back in August or maybe late July. 11 weeks to get into the shop, then 33 days to get fixed. 3900 bill from the body shop plus 1547 in rental fees to Enterprise...hats off to Progressive who covered the at fault driver(Nebraska is a fault state) they were very good to work with from my end. Most of the delay was waiting on parts but the shop did a great job keeping us in the loop. Rental was a 4Runner....kinda an uncivilized noisy thing but it got her around

After just over 12 years together, had to say "till next time" to the floor cleaner, snack stealer and companion these last 12 years

Screenshot_20221212_221444.jpg

With everything else going on it was tough timing but was the right decision. Just under 13 years old with a growing list of ailments that was really starting to impact quality of life. Going to take awhile to get used to the new noise level in the house, also tempted to set the robot vac to try and clean up the kitchen and dining room an extra time. She won't be our last dog...but we aren't planning on putting a puppy under the tree for a couple years. The daughter has asked at least 2x about when are we getting a new dog.... so may not hold out as long as mom and dad are planning....

On the medical front with father in law we were in the "wait" phase of the "Hurry up and wait" game that many know so well, but an opening in the schedule may have changed it to "hurry up" time instead. Will know more tomorrow but this change if it happens(still need confirmation) would pull up the planned removal(resection for the medical folks) of the "presumed cancerous masses" which tossed wrenches in all our schedules but we will adjust as we all want it done! Hopefully this gets confirmed in the morning and we can then officially adjust all our plans.... definitely going to need a real vacation in February when this $h!+ hopefully settles down!

Condolences on the pup. They are better people than any of us.

Thanks and agreed, tough to treat them well enough in return for all they do for us

Condolences on the family member. Hope your FIL has a successful surgery!

Thanks sir! Will hopefully get confirmation this AM that it's happening this week

Condolences for your companion, it's never easy.

Thanks, the 2 dogs we had growing up both passed naturally after I was out of the house so this was the first time having to do this. Very glad we opted to do it at home with a vet who makes house calls to make it as smooth and anxiety free for her as possible

Logan, we have lost our best friends both ways. We took the Bichon to the vet and she gave us a 'Thank You" look. Took the Pug to the vet and after they prescribed more meds we took her home. Just after midnight on December 26 she laid down and died in front of the treat machine (our refrigerator). I know how you feel and you have my deepest condolences.

As joyful as this time of year is supposed to be, it's also a stressful time. I hope your father-in-law's surgery becomes a holiday gift.

Sorry to hear about your pup, Logan, that's always tough. Hang in there, I feel for you and everything going on.

Very glad we opted to do it at home with a vet who makes house calls to make it as smooth and anxiety free for her as possible

My parents did this with our family dog growing up (and a bunch of subsequent rescues they've had). Of course it's still hard, but such a great idea to have them pass in a comfortable place they know and recognize.

Logan, So sorry for your loss of your pup, I have had to do that twice and it has been the hardest thing that I have had to do
