It's more so my wife. One of our kids gave her the spicy bug when she was pregnant and it never went away lol. She uses Cholula though.

Lol I'm glad none of the wife's food urges permanently changed, as the ones I don't like of course would have been magnified!

If i had the good spicy options you do I would probably appreciate it more. Here people just make it hot to be hot and that's never appealed to me

I'm not a super spicy fan, but my wife makes these really good cream cheese stuffed jalapeno popper things....Mmmmmm.

I took them one time and wrapped them bacon and threw them in the smoker, yes !

My four year old son has some rechargeable night light globe. He LOVES it. My one year old son wants to watch the world burn. He destroys everything he can, and is infatuated with cords.

So of course, he ruined his brothers night light charger cord at the USB end. To "fix" it, I took an old iPhone charger cord that was bad at the phone end, cut the bad ends off both cord, and spliced it together. Crude, but the nightlight can now be charged again. My wife thinks I am like an electrical engineer or something for my "amazing" work! She has a pretty low bar to impress there I guess.

In Texas we called them A.B.T. which stands for Atomic Buffalo Turds.

A year or 2 ago, a co-worker gave me some poblano peppers and i had just recently smoked a brisket. So, I stuffed them with cheese and brisket, then wrapped them with bacon. Cooked them in the air fryer till the pepper started to get tender and bacon was cooked. for the final touch I coated it with BBQ and cooked it for a couple of more minutes to caramelize the BBQ some. Even my wife was impressed and enjoyed the dinner!

I'm usually the one that gets everything that's broken, and it's expected that I fix it. When I tell them something can't be fixed, they look at me like I'm sick or something. One time i replaced a bad capacitor on a circuit board for a TV and when it came back to life they all thought I should be working at NASA.
BUt my father-in-law, I can tell he had fixed something cause when he gets done he always add "Flairs" as he puts it. It might not be fixed but damn does it have character in its new disformed shape! LOL

@Boostingaz, that's my beverage choice as well. About the only thing I don't put it on is ice cream. Costco sells Cholula two-packs.

Replacing watch batteries earned me some brownie points but my first Harbor Freight welder earned me a whole new level of brownie points.

Did you grab a brewsky and are you watching LSU gymnastics 🤔

If I'm drinking beer tonight it'll have to be one of the uber stout Dragons Milk...otherwise tonight is bourbon. And unless you count my 4 year old's antics to escape bed time...no gymnastics here

Super glue belongs close,

5 Years ago this would've been similar to me....now super glue that close to ground level is asking for a catastrophe with 2 mini humans roaming around lol. It's super handy though...when I remember to put the cap back on

We all just love to seem to de-rail Logan huh!! Sorry bud 😂

Between the day job, the family job and the medical on the job training, it doesn't take much to distract me lol. Which is also how I ended up looking at an Estate sale about 15 min away with a bunch of barely used Woodpeckers One Time Tool kits. I'm on the fence about visiting....it'll be a madhouse, I'll have 1 kid and I didn't see anything I needed....but haven't seen a sale in a long time with that much high end stuff that appears unused....so who knows

In non distracted news....bourbon won

We took the kiddos out to dinner with grandma and grandpa for my daughter's birthday and it was playing on one of the TVs so had to say something.

I think I'd be going to that sale....no peer pressure 🤣

This is the support I come here for...."yes, go look at more stuff you don't need and have to make storage space for but looks so pretty".....I have plenty of the "what are you going to make with that?" From others lol

In reality it will likely come down to the mood of the 4 yr old at 8:15 when it's time to go...dangerous gamble

I feel like Woodpeckers is less about need and more about want lol. They don’t always reinvent the wheel, but they do make some damn nice tools!! I say you go. #yolo

So not really sure what the story is here, but the best I can guess is the estate was for someone who had come across some significant good fortune($$$) and went on a bit of a buying spree that would make him a kindred soul to those here. Lots of Veritas, Woodpeckers, Bridge City, Leigh and other high end mostly hand/joinery tools...but most barely used and many still new in box. l don't know the reason why it was barely used, but as this was an Estate sale I can guess...but at retail I think there was close to $30k, probably closer to $40k here in the hand tools and related items

The conventional power tools were nothing overly special, contractor table saw, bunch of yellow tools with cords and the normal assortment of old clamps, no name hammers, hand tools etc

I got there early enough I was in the first 30 to get in and came home with my first Woodpeckers item, their 6 in 1 pocket gauge that was a 1 time tool a couple years ago. They mismarked it and had $6 on it...sold! They priced most things around 60 to 75% of current new pricing, some higher.

20230114_095345.jpg

Now to figure out how to make it useful! Not sure if I go back tomorrow afternoon and see what's left and how motivated they are to comply it out

Some nap time progress on fitting the vise

Super high tech guides for the mortise in the top

20230114_135015.jpg

Then time to lay over to do the route into the front face

20230114_144346.jpg

Now comes the fun part. The hub or trunnion that the screw assy runs thru is big enough it normally hits the bottom of the work bench surface, so I have to hog out for a roughly 4.5" or 5" diameter hub about 3" deep...this will probably be tonight as the golden window of nap time has expired

Well not much to show from this morning

Internet said needed #18 screws...well not on this one as the holes are sized for #14...return trip to store.

Hey, look no #14's the right size but brass...yeah brass might be a cool look

20230115_143157.jpg

Looks like pilots weren't big enough lol

Also realized that the consignment sale from yesterday was doing half price...so back I went lol. Most of the good, more useful stuff was gone but found this height gage for $12.50 so happy with that

One final project for the weekend. The longer term home for the jointer would be easier to accommodate if it was wired for 120 instead of 240v. It's a 1.5hp model so wiring on low voltage is feasible, but of course no wiring diagram on the motor or in the manual. Bit of Google work then checking before firing it up and worked like a charm.

Now to help the poor S.O.B. (probably me) who needs rewire it again down the road, I found some heavy card stock and drew out the wiring diagram for both voltages(240v on backside) then "laminated" it with packing tape and hung it off the power cord inside the base. Out of sight and out of mind but once the panel is pulled off obvious.

Quick update...

Couple degrees saved us from snowblower time on Wed night...lot of sleet and rain and slush...only about an inch of snow. Still the town was shut down due to the forecast so no daycare on Wednesday

Few minor garage projects underway:

Where I want the jointer to live has the back fence handle hitting the router frame and costing a couple inches of space...

20230121_173621.jpg

So unbolted the factory 4" riser base and slid it over, removed it and slid the jointer back

20230121_190626.jpg

20230121_190615.jpg

Success! Can nest the jointer back another 8" Need to make a couple of wood shims to fill in the gap between the mobile base frame and the base and find a spot to store the base and will be done.

Hey look, I completed a couple Instagram Woodworker merit badges
  • Live edge
  • Floating shelf
Do I get bonus points for combining the two? Didn't manage to get epoxy in there as well...maybe next time

One of the small logs of walnut I grabbed last month and cut up, ripped the back edge straight enough, cleaned up on the jointer, some sanding and then pocket screws to mount it. Pocket screws to mount it is kinda cheating, but behind the drywall here is osb and its not holding much weight as you can see so the pocket holes seemed both easy now, easy to move in the future and strong enough. Finish is a aerosol can of polyacrylic, because I had it available and I'm impatient lol

I'll admit it's a good start, but uh... where's the juice groove? Where's the Rubio Monocoat? Needs melted crayola crayon river and more bowties. Also if you didn't use a Domino to attach to the wall it's def gonna fall down.

Jk, I think it's fun and looks good. 'Bout time you did something with all that wood you're hoarding!

Most accurate thing I've read today! LOL

Thanks for swinging by! You get any snow accumulation on Thursday or did it all stay south of you?

As I try and get to the position I can more efficiently turn usable pieces of wood into scrap due to operator errors....couple more major pieces of equipment not yet owned or operational:
  • Thickness planer
  • Dust collector
  • Tablesaw

Since I own the planer and had some available time tonight I figured it was far overdue to show it some love as it was the last piece of equipment not yet running from my 3 tool buy a year or so ago....so here it is after about a dozen rags and bunch of elbow grease

20230122_215417.jpg

Pulled the side guard over the chain drive for the feed off to check the chain...glad I did

20230122_214731.jpg

As a tension spring for an idler was as you can see no longer in "operating condition"

20230122_214738.jpg

Found one a bit too long in my stock of springs

20230122_215211.jpg

20230122_220208.jpg

So going to see how it does while I try and get the proper spring in.

Next up is to fix a leaky drain plug on the gearbox for the 2 speed feed and refill with fresh fluid. When I bought the carbide jointer knives I bought a set of knives for this as well so that, along with any dialing in of the 4 corners should put it into operation

That spring looks fine to me.

It's probably going to be the go to for awhile....because of course Part # 112, identified in such incredible detail as "Spring" in the parts manuals is discontinued with no substitute on all the parts sources I've found. It's a bit longer and a bit lower force than what appears to have been original, but it's putting tension on the idler. Will run it for a bit with the cover off and see how much jumping around the idler does before I try too hard on finding a stouter solution. Thanks for swinging by!

+10 points for the Merrell Jungle Mocs!

Love them! Bought them initially as a pair of easy to slip on shoes for when I was standing at my desk and they were far to comfy to only use there and they've become the go to. Getting close to the bottom being racing slick smooth so replacement time is coming up and probably going to do 2 pair this next time, one for garage and one that I try and keep a bit nicer looking for when I leave the house. And from browsing the website looks like they do offer a safety toe option which I've been thinking would be good....looks like new shoes may show up this week.

Thanks for taking the time out from the snow duty to comment...and thanks for keeping more of the snow to the south :)

Why I don't have Internet in the shop.

Another example of your wisdom at work! I'm more productive when I can keep the phone up on the toolbox and just use it as the music source. Distractions are definitely the bane of my productivity and I need to be more intentional about taking some of the things I've found that work for me in the work life and apply to the garage time. Here's to a productive day for you in your retirement shop!

Not sure if it is wisdom??? Just haven't installed the Wifi link to the house? Not really a priority.

Makes it difficult to update software on the computers but doable through a hotspot on my phone so long as the phone is in the front of the shop. The phone does not get a signal in the Machine Shop area or the "Cold Storage" area. Phone is set-up with no alerts for anything. It spends most of the days now face down on the desk.

Pavlov's Theory at work...when I was working:

The Phone rings: More work.

The Phone rings: Something is wrong/broke down.

The Phone rings: Somebody needs something.

The Phone rings: Somebody is driving and board and wants to pass the time.

The Phone rings: Have to stop what I am doing.

The Phone rings: Answer stupid question.

The phone and I have a love hate relationship.
