This area is considered the Olympic Peninsula, and you do have to cross the Tacoma Narrows Bridge if driving around I-5 from the Seattle area, or you can ferry over. I guess I just never looked at it as an island. There are a ton of islands that surround us here in the Puget Sound though.

I started in on my footing drains yesterday, and will be carrying on today. It's a tedious task because it's not easy getting the drain rock down in the hole. One scoop at a time with the excavator, then shoveling it into the drain forms, then hike back up the hill to load another scoop.

Following closely. Also live in Kitsap and hope to start my planned 40x60 shop in the spring provided I can get some wetlands issues worked out.

The wetlands issue is definitely a prominent issue in this area, I know of a couple guys that have had difficulty with that too, I hope you get the outcome you're after. The county can be a challenge at times. You have to wonder how they drum up some of the rules that they have. I don't have wetlands but I did have a big struggle with some setback issues. It barely worked out for me to build this plan, and I had to move the building quite a ways from where I had originally planned. It would have been a lot easier if they made up their mind when I started. It seems like every time I asked certain questions that I got a different answer, even with the inspectors. That gets frustrating....

Well that *****. Trying to not have to spend 30k in concrete to build into a hillside like you. Got a specialist coming it next week that works these issues out with the county. Fingers crossed.

Not sure what that is but she is going to look at the land, proposed build area, and documentation then determine the way ahead for dealing with the county. I was referred to her by my pest control guy that had problems building his home because of county position on wetlands on his property. She was able to get him the approvals they would not budge on before. This is just a first step in the process.

I'll definitely start a build thread as I start to narrow down what I am doing. Trying to decide between pole barn and steel as well as whether to contract it or build myself with help from friends and family.

I hear ya. I thought about all of the different options like that too. I think if I hadn't wanted to put it where I did and didn't need the retaining wall as a foundation, then I would have probably done steel. This one will be stick built on top of the concrete, but not to many other ways to do it in this case. I have a lot of fun little things planned for the build process too that seem easier with a stick build.

Permitting is pretty straight forward, send me a message if you run into trouble and I may be able to help you out. I just went through it, although my building type is different than yours, should be similar enough to lend a hand. Mine was processed through in just about a month to 5 weeks.

The footing drains are coming along well, and I have one side backfilled. Working on the 60' back wall this week. My goal is to have that wall done by this weekend, and have all of it done by the end of next week.

1-1/2" utility drain rock, 4" perforated PVC pipe, and sediment felt make up the footing drain. I temped up some 2x12s and backfilled them to hold the rock in place, then just peeled the boards out in sections as I went along. This method worked out pretty well, and kept the drain rock from sluffing down as I filled in the trench. I also used some good duct tape to temporarily hold the felt up so I could shovel the rock in without having to hold it out of the way. I'm curious how people typically do these drains, but this worked out. I also taped a few folded seams as I closed the felt over the top of the rock just to keep it until I covered it with a layer of backfill.

Hi Walt, that is a 2hp Jaeger concrete mixer engine. I picked it up from a friend who restored it, he does beautiful work and has restored numerous tractors and engines. I have some YouTube videos of other engines I have had. Same username on YouTube if you're interested. Our local club is the Olympic Peninsula Antique Tractor and Engine Association, and there are a few other great clubs in the area too. Www.Opatea.org

Yes, we are just out side San Francisco, the dream is to move up there in 3-5 years, it's only a 13 hour drive.
The house framing just passed inspection, tape the seams and wrap the house comes this week/next week. The windows are on a ship and won't show up till the end of October. Until that is done, the guys will sheet rock the shop and finish the shop bathroom.

This is great, a few guys in the area, it took a year to get through the SDAP, but we have been lucky, the area we are building on was cut down some time ago, all of our wet land is hidden in the forest. The county was fine with us building the shop first, but we had to have a permit for the house pulled.
Hit and miss engines. I have a 2/12 hp rock island built by alamo engine works for Minneapolis moline plow company in 1915. I just moved to TN and thought I would find an engine club where I live but there are none. In CA I belonged to the Gold Country Flywheelers in Penn Valley. Like your build I am doing the same thing in TN. A 50/80 with 16 foot walls.

Made some good progress today, the back wall footing drain is done and all backfilled in. On the home stretch starting in the morning of the last side. I'll get some pictures after backfill is complete.

So how's the progress? Been kind of quiet recently.
Getting closer to starting my project. Wetlands paperwork complete. Waiting for HOA to approve plan then it's off to get permits and purchase the building. Looking for a good excavation site prep and concrete company now. Going to assemble the building myself with friends and family.

Glad to see it's going along smoothly for you! Those initial stages can take some effort to get through. I didn't have the wetlands to deal with though.
My project it's a little quiet right now, I'll be ordering my framing materials in mid spring. I'm working on some grading and things but not a lot to post about right now. I have some rockery projects that I'm catching up on in the mean time as well. I'm looking forward to seeing some updates on your building. I did my own dirt work but I can refer you to my concrete guy if you like. I posted about him earlier in the thread also if you want to look back.

HOA is good to go. Paid for the county consultation which I am waiting for them to give me a date. Once I feel good about the site approval I'll put money down on the building and get the plans for submission.
I've got 13 trees that will need to be dropped and stumps removed. Probably 125 cu yards of fill to bring me above grade for shop and added driveway. Lots to do.

Ordering my framing lumber package probably this week. If not then next week. The framing should begin very soon! I need to have my engineer draw a compaction sample first and get my inspection card signed off for that step first, so hopefully I can get that done this week. Here's a shot of the slab in the snow just for fun.

I passed my backfill compaction inspection today, framing lumber will be here Friday, and truss package is on the schedule for delivery May 25. I decided to run with partial attic trusses. Wish me luck, this is a first time build!
