68" Epiq... Should I?

My dealer has a KETN682 Epiq on his truck for a very reasonable price.

It would be replacing a tired KR1000.

List is $14,215 with a show discount of $6,216, and a $900 trade in, as well as a $1500 EC rebate. Brings my total to $6024 after the sales tax.

I have wanted a yellow box ever since I saw Von Dutch's yellow snappy box. I do like the black and yellow on this box a lot.

What say the masses?

Boxes don’t make you money....but you can’t take the money with you when you go. If it makes you happy, you can afford it, not financing it, then I say go for it.

I’m not so worried about the money so much as I’d hate to spend 6k and not have enough drawers. I may need a triple bank.

Disagree, organization and layout does make money.

Seems to be a fair price, the going rate for that size with promo pricing. I spend a good bit of my waking time with my box/tools at work. I have no issue having nice things you'll appreciate and use for years. My only real question, is if that yellow is a standard color that will be available in the future. If it's a rare/limited color, accessories may be hard to find in the future. It's a good looker IMO.

If you want it, buy it, and enjoy it.

Do the cubic inch comparison, would your dealer let you order a similar box at a similar percent discount? Snap on swung by with a penske truck full of boxes last week. 68s were 6500ish? Plus tax. IMO, buy once cry once, if you think you need a triple, you need one. It's a decent price for sure.

I’ll have to do the math.

It has a few less drawers than my KR1000, but it is wider. It’s probably comparable to what I have now with the side box on it.

I just would want this box to last me 20 years, I’d hate to have to re-buy in 5.

take half to 60% of that to the used market then sell your box .
It not a great deal, trading box to dealer is like trading a car you doing worse than if haggle without a trade in and have hard cash .
What ever you buy take the time to ponder drawers and how it going work, if spending big it got be 100% ideal for your use .
I run my own shop and spent big on equipment but my boxes built up over years used deals as right box came along (flipped a few extra ones I found too) .
Nothing beats a used truck box for value to quality ratio .

Sounds to me like you're buying a triple. Is a KRL series in you interest? You could probably get a similar color pattern, at a similar price to a 68" epiq. All about layout really. Small drawers or big ones? That's my biggest concern with storage. Cubic inches are a nice rough estimate, but a box full of thin drawers means storing nothing taller than 2 inches. Inversely, storing screwdrivers in a 4" deep drawer wastes a lot of space.

Via snap on box builder site, and an Ebay ad for a kr1000. Epiq is 8 inches taller, and 15 inches wider. IMO the layout of those older boxes sucked.

I run my own shop too, and I have several nice SO boxes all bought used. I realize buying new you take a big hit. Sometimes you have to buy new to get the options or colors you want. Yellow Epiqs are pretty rare.

It’s really not about the money. I just want to get the best box configuration for my money. I’d hate to buy this then find out I don’t like the 3 full wide drawers or the layout is goofy.

I wouldn’t mind a KRL, but the drawer latches of the Epiq are sooooo much better than the dumb lock and roll.

I don’t really have a lot of tall tools, so more shallow drawers is better for me. I also like the added work area of a triple.

How old is your KR1000?

A lot depends on the age of it.

Maybe $1200 for it would be better.

Private sale may get you more.

At least 30 years old. And it’s not the best condition. I’m not really in the mood to deal with a private sale to get only a couple hundred more.

Honestly $900 isn’t out of line for it.

If I thought there was a possibility I'd need more space, I'd get more space now than having to do this a 3rd time and once again take a bath on selling my old box.

Sometimes trades are undervalued, and it saves you money. Snap on will give you $X off for financing total amount $Y. Lets say 3k off for financing a total of 10k. Getting an extra $500 in trade value, may drop you below the threshold for the financing rebate. Or, that extra $500 of trade in, lowers you financing rebate by $1000; net -$500.

Most times what they offer, is about as much they can wiggle the numbers to drop them.

I have a yellow/black KRL1001 that is stuffed to the brim. I love the color combo and when I upgrade to an Epiq it will either be the exact box you're considering or an 84" version.

The size difference between your existing box and a 68" Epiq is substantial. As far as the price goes, I've been quoted almost the same price from the Rock & Roll Cab truck and that's where the best deals usually happen. The 84" w/ discounts and rebates wind up around $8500.

One thing I might add that may help you, if you don't have a bunch of large cases or large tools to store in the 10" deep lower right drawer you can easily add the drop in power tool organizer from the KRL series box. It's meant for a 12" deep drawer but I (as well as several other GJ'ers) installed it in the 10" deep drawer and it fits all but the biggest impact. I wouldn't be without the convenience of it for my cordless tools now.

BTW, if you have any interest in seeing a examples of yellow 84" boxes let me know, I have several pics saved. d04573b11f5f84d01c082253b4613153.jpg

I would for sure spend some time looking at the used market. Quite a few good deals out there. Picked up a 68" Epiq a couple weeks ago in matte black in the 13 drawer configuration for $2150. Needed a wash and looks/performs like new. These boxes can be found significantly cheaper than $6500..

I get it's a rare color, but $4k more for the color yellow?? That box does look great, although the drawer configuration kinda ***** IMO.

Someone has to buy new boxes for there to be used boxes you know... haha.

And yes, I know I’m paying the premium for new. But sometimes it’s worth it, sometimes it isn’t.

What's so tired of the KR1000 ? It's twice the box that the Epic will ever will be. And by the way, you'll be sick of the black/yellow in one week.

Well, I have 2 of them. I’d be trading in the one I don’t use. The box is rough. Rust, dents, holes, it’s been around the block several times. Plus the layout is not great for what I want to do. I really like the KR1000, but this one isn’t particularly nice.

And I’ve been thinking about this color for years. You don’t know me. How the hell do you know what I like and will tire of? I’m sick of red and black tool boxes in my shop.

Buy it already. It usually takes me several weeks working out of a new box to get it dialed. I think the 68 epic will have more space than you think just by the added depth. Of course you will always want a bigger box later. This is GARAGE JOURNAL.

Just a damn good guess. I was betting that you hated Tonka toys when you were a kid and that subconscious hate would bubble to the surface once you got the Epiq. :D

Haha, no I had a killer Tonka collection. Wish I still had them today.

only thing i'll say about the yellow is it shows marks bad .
Not biggest fan on the 10 drawer layout but that personal thing.
If going spend big it got be 110% right for you, your intended usage and your finances and only you can answer that .

Do what makes you happy man. It's your life and your money, so don't fell the need to justify your purchase to anyone but yourself. $6500 is a good price for that box if it is the size, color and configuration you really want. If it isn't, don't settle for that box because you don't think you will find one again for that price... you will be able to get that price again later off the Rock and Roll truck in whatever color combination and configuration you want.

I've had a black and yellow Snap-on box for nearly 15 years and I've never once thought I was sick of the color combo. My favorite colors are yellow and orange so I wouldn't care to have a red, green or blue box. I also wouldn't ever tell someone considering one of those colors they'd be sick of it in a week either!

I agree with everything you said. A KRL1023 with Epiq drawer latches would be the perfect box for me. I prefer more shallow drawers as well, but the Epiqs are really nice. Someone here (Strouty?) has a really nice Epiq with a custom drawer layout with lots of shallow drawers.

I would love to convert my KRL1056 to detents or any KRL for that matter. I think it could be done, but it would involve finding bayonet slides in the correct length and bayonet spacing. You probably have no idea what I'm talking about. :)

this is an older picture of mine, ill try and take an updated picture today.
84" epiq triple drawer, 2 lockers (only 1 has power drawer), and a hutch. it now has black drawer guards and drawer protectors. Yellow is a sharp box and very hard to overlook. Doesnt show dust as easily but does show grease.

What I really would like is Strouty’s exact box but in yellow.

Not sure I can justify the space it will take up though, as well as the added cost. It is a pretty significant bump in price.

But, if it’s what I need, I probably can make it work. I do have some other equipment purchases I would like to make this year, I don’t know if I can justify spending my whole cap ex budget on a new toolbox lol. Especially when it is essentially a luxury purchase.

here is an updated picture. i removed the left bottom large drawer and ordered 2 smaller drawers. these large drawers are supposed to be for large boxes and such and mine always turn into junk drawers. So now that they are 2 smaller drawers i can use them for sockets and wrenches
