We have been at it again with some progress, but with the heat, work has been slow.
Below are a couple of pics.
The first one is of my Happy Helper.
The second one is of the top half of the rear wall interior.

There's really nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. This build is amazing! I wish I lived close by. I'd gladly help with the lifting and labor in exchange for the learning experience. I sat here and read this whole thread from start to finish in one sitting. I admire you and your wife's drive and craftsmanship. Great work!

What can be better than having your lovely wife working along side with you on such an fantastic project ! You guys are doing an awesome job !!
I might have missed it, but what are you using as a finish for the the ceder ? How many coats ? I hope your are using stainless or at least galvanized nails to hang that beautiful cedar.

Great job--such pretty work at any age and you two are just wonderful to want to do this yourselves. So many folks do not try to do anything for themselves. You two are like my Amish friends--just do it--jump on it. Have read most post and they all agree--you're the greatest.

Thanks for sharing your project with us.
You really have had to deal with some of the really hot weather the last two weeks.
But as of last Saturday it has been a whole lot better.
It is wonderful to learn about a husband and wife that are working together and enjoying life the way you two are. Congrats. on the 50th wedding aniv. and Happy Birthday to you both.

Thanks to all for the kind words. Very nice to have you all see how great it is to have a wife that enjoys working with you. She really does enjoy seeing it come togrther and be a big part of it. She is doing all of the staining.
About the coating of the cedar.
The interior is being done, when we can get it here in Arkansas at a decent price, with WATCO clear brushing lacquer. We like the GLOSS. It is clearer and has a better look on the rough sawn cedar. We may go to Deft which is a very similar product and much easier to find. WATCO is owned my Rust-o-leum.
The exterior is done with TWP cedartone 101. (TWP Total Wood Protection )This product is not available in all 48 states. Not sure about HI or AK. It is an issue with VOC. CA bans it and a whole bunch of others follow. We love it.
The brushing lacquer goes on and is dry within 30 minutes. Depending on weather, at 105 it was dry in about 10. You can easily handle it dry in 45 mins on almost any day. Second coat she will put on in 15 minutes or as soon as she is done with the first set of sticks
We do from 8 to 10 at a time.
Pretty much the same with the TWP , but will wait 30 to 45 minutes between coats. Need to wait couple hours to handle these, but it you don't mind sticky hands you can do it sooner.
Both get 2 coats, ends of boards get extra.
Have used some stainless but cost and availibity have made it a problem. So most all of the nails we shoot are galv. The hooks that were used to hold the ropes to hold me on the roof and we left up there in case repairs need to be made, are stainless.

Lin and Dave, you're doing an absolutely fantastic job together. I'm going to show this thread to my wife (of two years, this coming October 3rd). While I love the barn's progress, it's the two of you that has me commenting. Dave, you can tell you're a good fella by the way you speak of her. I admire the both of you.

That's a great question. wish we had a great answer.
It is an oil base stain with uv protection. Which means it is not a film based stain and it will not peel as they do. We were told it would last 4 to 5 on the non sun sides and 3 to 4 on the sides in the sun. We have used it on other stuff, outdoor furniture etc., and it has held up better than that. But we never believe any of the claims that anyone says anymore. And at 72 we don't worry too much about how long anything will last. More about how long we will last.
We expect to have to lightly pressure wash it with no chemicals once a year or two and recoat if we can as needed. Dirt build up on surfaces here are a problem that you would have with any coating. It is the best that we have ever used to apply and ease of clean up etc. However we have by no means tried them all and hope we haven't imply that.

I hadn't checked in on your thread recently, so I was quite amazed at the progress you've made. The outside looks great! I hope the tree came down easily. Perhaps you'll miss the shade, but not having to deal with the loss of limbs/twigs/leaves will save some time.

Not sure what you mean by the term "GABLE LOUVER ". If you mean the louvered vent than what we did was to put two generous rows of dynaflex 230 on the backside of the face flanges all the way around 360. Then after it was installed a seam fo the same on the top three flanges.

One problem I see and maybe you addressed and I didn't see, the gable louver has no flashing over the top of it.
