Just a curiousity question..... But why not just punt on the alignment appointment today, and just drive the car for a bit? Then put on the new suspension arms, (if still desired) and then take it to the alignment shop?

I get the long term value of having it aligned, but would it make that much of a difference in the short term?

The suspension is already on. I don't want to drive it to work 62 miles tomorrow with toe not set.

The bumper, headlights, front end is completely assembled.

I'm working on tightening down the suspension at ride height. Lift FTW.

Once that's done, i get tires back on and start clearing the shop to get it out. 3.5hrs to go time.

I cancelled my appt and am working on the issues. I got the starter to stop spinning when i rapped on it. The alternator was unplugged i found. And the shifter i have no idea. I don't really think they are adjustable.

No reverse lockout solenoid. It's a push down to engage reverse shifter. I didn't adjust anything and it's original.
Everybody i talk to is saying adjustment. I am reviewing vids now.

Ok, busy day. shifter had two issues. Alignment in vehicle, and the attachment at transmission wasn't tight enough. I pulled the old nut off, got a nut off the 02X we just bought for my daughter, slightly different nut, and put that on. I centered the shifter alignment in vehicle, centered the travel to get it where i wanted, then tightened the new nut down. It bottomed out, then i kept tightening and it sort of fell into a "groove" my words. And tightened down some more. Now it doesn't move at all. So with some more alignment inside car, i should be good to go to finish the shifter install and put the interior back together.

I'm making arrangement to work from home tomorrow (not supposed to) and will try again next week, after i have put some miles on it.

Well, sounds as tho you encountered a lot of issues, but also worked to sort through them... I imagine it may have been a bit of a moral buster during all of that...

Candidly, I figured there would be issues. With the amount of work done to the car, there was pretty much a high chance of having something that needed resolved. Having the alignment appointment was a good target as it forced you to keep working and pushing forward.

Personally, I would tape some alignment sticks to the tires, run a couple of tape measures and just adjust the toe in to be close. Run it for a few days, and make the alignment appointment at your convenience.

Is it a requirement for you to be in the office a certain number of days?

Regardless, keep chipping away at it. Closest you've been to driving it so far.... lol. :beer:

Bimmer, I am supposed to maintain 3 days in the office regardless of vacations or personal time. Company policy. My boss was ok with it due to circumstances. I still need to schedule the new appt. I don't want to drive without some sort of alignment. Audi's are already hard on tires. I don't need any additional wear.

The pcv valve isn't showing up until tomorrow, so everything will be closed, and i have no way to drive it currently. the diaphragm in the valve was torn half way around the edge, and hard as a rock. they don't work too well as rigid bodies... :ROFLMAO:

The weather is ok today. Not as cold, rain held off until now. We got hay put up, and i hoisted the car up and ran it back and forth until my arms were about falling off. Now i have no power steering at any rpm. Sweet. The tools on audizine were no help, and i am probably just going to drive it and hope for the best. I think i have a big air bubble that's not moving. A new chinesium pump is 60ish, bosch is 250 if i turn out to be wrong.

I got the car off the lift, verified reverse working, clutch working, brakes seem ok. I'm now swapping the console out because the old one was broken, and i had half of it already out due to the work going on. I'm going to leave the pass seat out, since i have recaros to go in it, and an S4 headliner and i have to pull seats anyway to take headliner out. This is all way down the road obviously. It needs to go down the road first.

Also discovered the license mount is TOAST. just rotten. I'll probably try to glue nuts in place of the balls of rust that used to be captive nuts. And i ordered a replacement from ebay california.

Just gotta say, i really appreciate the crowd here. I post questions on other forums, and get spit on and despised just because i'm an engineer. Then told to go away and figure out my own problems. I don't get that here and it is nice. You guys are great.

I've pretty much written off all other forums other than GJ, I'll read, but never post there. Being an engineer too, I get a lot of **** for it, but oh well, at least I work on my own stuff rather than just paying for someone else to do it for me just as you do. Best of luck with the P.S. in the Audi, hopefully it is an easy fix.

In my experience, at least in person, I don't believe it is hate, just disapproval for decisions that were made. Many times those decisions have very valid reasoning but knowing why is sometimes hard to find out if you don't know the engineer. Also there are decisions that are made and the only reason is the engineer didn't know any better, for the most part if brought to the attention of said engineer they will learn and try to not repeat that in the future. On the other hand we also get paid pretty well and have a stereotype of being nerds behind a computer with no life skills so it is "easy" to poke fun of the **** in the corner. Just my $0.02 anyway, not that you asked. :lol:

I understand about the engineer not knowing better, but also I believe that the best options are not taken sometimes because of bean counters wanting the cheapest price, or the sales department wanting it yesterday or other outside influences. On the other side of the coin there needs to be some sort of boundaries to stop engineers gold plating things, or just wanting another month to make it perfect rather than good enough. Like most things involving humans...it's complicated :ROFLMAO:

My Dad was a mechanic for app 40 years, from semi trucks to cars. I think the hate is because the object/system the mechanic or repairman has to work on is decided by committee, not necessarily what an engineer designed. So, the engineer takes the blame whether it is their fault or not.
I've also had to deal with some arrogant jerks that are engineers, but I do my best not to lump all of them together and treat each individually. Lots of people that are not engineers are arrogant jerks too. :)

Audi is scheduled for tomorrow at 1pm at the alignment rack. I'm at the office today, and wfh tomorrow to get the car in.
I basically have tonight to get the car ready to go. The power steering still hasn't started working, i think it's a big air bubble and not
bleeding. I'm hoping some motion down the road combined with RPMS will get it to bleed out.
