Stone the sharp corners of the carbide edge, sorry to be unclear. Those can leave some ugly scratches (btdt on non critical stuff). It is expensive, and the shank needs rust prevention when you get it, its just low carbon mild. But, you can either make (braze to steel) or buy another carbide and sharpen it in a negative rake arc and do some actual machine scraping should you find yourself into that someday! Its also useful for scraping gaskets of flanges and cylinder heads, etc, anywhere you don't want to use abrasives.

Razor blade is probably OK too, but it will dull faster than the square carbide, but then again you can buy lots of razors for 1 scraper :)

I'll probably start a new thread in the appropriate place for work i do on it. I think i'm going to have to pull the carriage and apron at a minimum. I'm also thinking there might be taper attachment parts missing based on some videos i've seen.

If you start a new thread on it, please post a link to it on here. i don't always go through all of the new threads, and might miss it!:beer:

I tried to get something done yesterday, but i needed to open the door a bit to weld on the edges, and the wind would blow the shield gas away. I gave up. ended up pecking away at the lathe. I have almost everything freed up, just the carriage/apron remains. I probably need to remove it to really make progress. Today i went to take the trailer i borrowed from my buddy back after church, 120 miles one way. I didn't get home until dinnertime. Basically all i got done was a bit more oiling down the lathe stuck bits. I hope more can get done tomorrow. I'll try to leave work on time so i can get more done. Running out of time before snow flies.

Got the door closure mounts welded on last night. Also worked on the lathe a bit. Lathe work at work this morning to make a half nut lever. Also parts for my machinery skates are starting to come in. I'll work on the door some more tonight.

Tonight i closed up the shop, pinned the door shut. I determined i need to revise the door hardware a bit to get it to work. Also installed a bottom door seal, so it's a lot tighter than it was. Also worked on the lathe. Made some good progress. it's freeing up nicely.

There's COLD weather coming tomorrow. Snow predicted.

Link to the door hardware for a new sub? I know a guy locally with a hangar door, I can get some pictures if you think they would help, though I imagine you know what you want pretty well.

Door opener starts around post #1400. I don't know that there's a post for the closure stuff. It's a work in progress. The bottom door seal holds the door open a bit further than anticipated, which means the arm that grabs the frame pin is a little short. I will revise and see where i'm at.

Weather continues to deteriorate. Thurs / Fri supposed to be low around 20F. I have to be heating by then. Boiler is non-operational. I have rejiggered the oil fill system to work off air, but there's no air down there. SO, i have to run air lines and sweat them in this week, rebuild the oil tank and insulation, and wire up the motor and pump BEFORE i can heat the old way. Gonna be a busy week.

On the plus side, i ordered a new suction side hose for my oil pump, that DOESNT collapse from suction and it primes and pumps easily even at 45F. Wasn't able to manage that before. SO, now i have 687 gallons in the storage. I think i'm good for now. I do have an additional 40-50 gallons to go pick up when i get to it. Plus the 20 or so gallons of leaves/oil left in the barrel i tried to empty earlier. Not sure what to do there. What a pain.

Also got the timbers cleared out and put outside so the floor is cleaned up a bit, and started garage tetris again. The lathe takes up about a 4x8ft footprint. I plan to put it over on the area between the boiler and 2 post lift. I think there's room there, but not sure. A whole lotta stuff needs to move. Moved the compressors and motors out of the way, and started clearing the space for the lathe. I plan to leave the skates on the lathe so i can roll it back and forth to clear a path if needed. I am also thinking that it's finally time to clean out the fairlanes and get that lift up so i can get that floorium back. I really need more time and more good weather.. ugh.

You sound like I feel.

They have changed our forecast a few times, if we get snow on Friday, I don’t think I can plow as the trucks are not ready.

Tonight I slid the lathe over into the corner by the oil storage. Then vacuumed up a lot of the loose stuff and scraped down a lot more. She's really cleaning up nice. I have the skates setup so I can roll it out to work on it and put it back away when I don't need to. It really works nice. The center of the shop is wide open again. I think the time has come to get the fairlanes out of the corner and get a lift up.

The forecast for the next week is disgusting. Highs in the low 30s and lows in the low 20s. It's not even December yet!!!

I'm about 50 miles straight north of you.. I contracted to have my
500 sq foot workshop resided (vertical steel to match the 1850 sq foot pole barn). Guess who says, after three weeks of crappy , but warmer weather, that he's going to start Wednesday. My fault in not pushing him to get me a bid and a contract sooner.. We'll see how his crew works in cold weather, I guess.

Ugh. Terrible. I hope you don't have anything in there that freezes!

On that note, wife has been bugging me to take a look at her frostproof hydrant in the horse barn. I jackhammered the concrete around the hydrant out and pulled the hydrant. Of course, the brass foot at the bottom of the hole is broken, so i have to rent an excavator and dig a 5 ft deep hole big enough to go down in and work on it. Of course that'll be wednesday. I can't win i swear.

Plumbing in cold weather rates right down there at the bottom of my list of favorite chores..
I'll have heat in the shop until the propane tank that needs to be moved runs low (can't refill 'till it's back in place). Then using a couple of electrics to keep it above freezing. He's going to sheath over the old redwood lap siding with OSB, then the metal, so no open walls..
Stay warm!

Your plan sounds good. I hope this weather holds off for you. I suspect we're in it now though.

I have a plan for the water. I rented an excavator. Pickup tomorrow at noon. 18" bucket.
My BIGGEST worry now, is not that i can get it dug, but that the electrical for the building is VERY close to the water. I have to get past that first. Might slow me down. I have my 19 yr old for a spotter though. Supposed to be 40 while i'm digging tomorrow. BRRRR.

I think i'm going to go down beside the line, then dig out from beside it in the hole. It'll be a bigger hole, but less likely to hit the electrical. We don't have time to call for miss dig. Breaker for that line is in the house, so if i hit it, not a big deal. Horses can drink in the dark if necessary.

Did you put the electrical in or did someone else? Is it direct bury wire or in conduit?

I had to dig up next to some of my electrical conduit that is going from the house to the garage.... since the conduit was encased in crushed stone, it was easy to tell when I was getting close....

If the bucket has teeth on it, be aware..... I think there are requirements for utilities to have the buckets "barred" when digging next to gas line.... i.e. no teeth exposed to hopefully prevent rupturing gas lines.......

What size of excavator did you rent?

It's all my stuff, no utilities. We had the water trenched over to the horse barn when we built the house. I dropped some direct bury wire in the trench after the water once that was run. It diverges a bit at the barn, but still close enough it could get sticky. It's my line, so if i nick it, i fix it.

What is this cleaning out the fairlanes that you speak of???

The two fairlanes are side by side at the back of the shop. I have a cheap 4 post lift i got to stack them for more storage space. It really should get done first while i can still get back in there. Once the front lifts are up, it gets hard to get back that far into the shop with a big loader tractor.

I took the day off and worked on the water line project. Got the excavator at noon. Got home by 1245 or so, and had the hole dug by 130pm. Did a 4 hr rental and had plenty of time to do a good job without rushing. My boy helped me spotting the lines. I dug a bit to the side of where i knew everything was, and just missed the lines. The power sits right on top of the water line. Didn't nick anything and the job was done and wrapped up and was on the way back to the rental outfit within the 4 hrs mark. Wife is happy and the job is done so i can concentrate on the shop. Good thing, they keep changing the forecast. Tues night is supposed to be 13F!!!!

Going to spend all weekend working on the boiler to get it up and running again. First order of business tomorrow is run some air line to feed the oil level circuit.

Pics attached of the dig.
