8m x 8m x 3m Garage/Workshop

They started to do the digging for my new garage/workshop. 8m is about 29'

I am having it built into sandy hill in my back yard, so the roof will be level with thr ground at the back. Plan is to put a flatlett on top..........later, so the roof will be wahat we call rib and block.

Will end up being 2 grages and one workshop.

I build lotus 7 replicas as a hobby so needs a dedicated workshop

I stay in South Africa so we have to do things a little different to conform to code.

This will be a brick and mortar garage. 3 walls will be serious retainer walls.

Just finished my double garage few months ago. Rib and block is a PITA, believe you me.

This looks like an interesting project to follow along. It's always nice to see how things are built elsewhere in the world. I'm curious as to what "rib & block" construction is.

Were you afraid that you were cutting too close to the brick wall, shown in your first post ?

Rib and Block - It is like pre cast lintles that are packed over the length of the building and then specially shaped blocks are paced in detween the 'ribbs'. The whole lot is then propped from below and concrete is poured on top. All electrical pipes is under this concrete topping.

That is my neibours wall and there is a massive tree only a few feet from the escavation.

Been raining the whole day

Casting foundations tomorrow. 1000mm wide by 300mm thick 30 mPa

Luckely it is sand so drainages good.

There is a lot of sand there. Strange that the engineer did not specify that you need a deeper foundation, but 1000mm width will make for a nice shoe.

Rain did not create too much havoc.

No casting today. Inspector did not give the ok. Conserned about that big tree, so some supporting to be done tomorrow and see if he is happy.

In what way will you be supporting the tree?

We have strapped to some other trees on the garden, pulling it away from the escavations. I also see the builder hasbrought in some plywood and propps. Think he is going to cover the escavations to stop the sand from falling in.

The builder is now retaining the falling sand with multi ply boards.
The tree is still standing after anther day of howling winds. By thr way Port Elizabeth is known as the Frienbly City, but also the Windy City. More wind predicted for today.

It 7s part of our code. No doors or windows to face the neibour.

Will be building a door size area but to but that will be easy to knock out later once al the inspectors has signed the build off. Planning a glass roofed atrium there

I believe that is the smallest concrete truck I've ever seen. How many yards can it haul, 4 ?

6.537 cubic yards or 5 qubic meter here by us.

It is the normal size here by us for use in residential areas.

Otherwise they just rip up your paving or tar in

2 of them to fill the trenches.

1m wide x 0.3m deep x 8m long x 4 sides = 9.6m3

So 2 of them gave my 10m3 allowing for a bit of spillage
