If it's a flush fin frame, you just get out your circular saw or planer.

And to make a block frame, just score and snap off the nail fin.
I went to a local window manufacturer who designs his own extrusions. I told him where I purchased the hm frames (also a local manufacturer,) gave him the narrowest dimensions, and he made the windows to fit with no flange. He was also the person who said to use self tapping screws.
