A lift table of some sort will be a tool you never regret having. I use a hydraulic lift that has forks and likely was for lifting molds and dies originally but got it at auction. (Love those auction deals) Admittedly it's a little big to store in the garage but I cannot tell you how many times it has saved me when loading/unloading from my truck or trailer or, moving heavy items around the shop. My back is saved and it allows me to move and position heavy items at ease. It also provides an adjustable height work bench in a pinch for those bulky items. I just used mine again to unload that 20 ton shop press and stand it upright by myself.
Shop around for some sort of lift table that will suit your needs and your shop space and I believe you will never regret the purchase. And, enjoy not having to wait for that helper to come over to safely lift a project.

Bob

Bob,

I really should invest in a lift table, we have them at work, storage would be a problem here as well.

I can lift with a block and tackle in the shed easily enough and I did build a lifting point in the carport as well

1/2: so if i'm an old tool looking for a new home it would be a DREAM of mine to have you bring me home. GEESH that saw is going to be better than new and rightly so. now you just need some of my steel pile or maybe you'll get one of your own soon.

I agree with RM that a lift table is something we all can use. with your skills you could probably turn one of your cool benches into one or if you find a good quality one used i'd recommend you buy it.

i've got this Jet pallet jack lift at my little shop, but it's too hard to get out easily and it doesn't take bumps very well. i'm leaning towards just buying a SCRATCH N DENT from a local store that gets these Jet lifts and sells new ones with a few scratches for half price.

in any case I'm still praying your health is improving every day and good to see that it looks like 1/2 Cup is back to his old tricks of making stuff like new or keeping it that way.

speaking of back to normal has Mrs. 1/2 scheduled any new dog shows with the rodents or is that still a bit on hold?

cheers

Drives, thank you.
In any restoration i do give it my best shot and the Cold Saw is certainly worth the investment.

That's one thing I do have plenty of and that is steel and lots of it.

I will certainly keep my eye out for a lift table, you are right I could build one easily enough and it sure beats working on the floor all though what I should have done was to put it up on the bench in reality but i have used my trollies for the individual bits. Room is a real killer here at the moment..
We do not get many cheap bargain's out here, some scratch and dented stuff sell for near new anyway.
My health is going well ( thank you  ) at the moment with my next scans and bloods are in three weeks time. This will determine where to from here.
Still taking things easy.
I do have an appointment with an Ear Nose & Throat Specialist in regards to my Vocal Chord Palsy as the cancer in the lymph put it out of whack, hence the croaky raspy voice..

Mrs 1/2 Cup has not shown the rodents of late as Evie our Australian Champion is due with here third litter in a matter of weeks so the focus has been all about her well being..

Evie..

Cool how the pump turned out to be from a Ford, and bummer about the headgasket/radiator. You'll have them both done soon, if we know you.

xtremek, thank you.

The fact that the coolant pump was an automotive part saved me a lot of money, the new one is in the post and I should have it in the next day or so

Ordered Sunday and arrived here Tuesday morning..

I have got to give a plug to Auto Surplus in Mitcham for their service..

https://www.autosurplus.com.au/

Fortunately I don't have to do the repairs on the MGF the radiator is relatively easy but the head gasket is a whole different story in a mid engine car..
That is one killer saw, can't wait to see that thing working.

tweidman, thank you:thumbup:
A cold saw is the way to go to cut metal the cuts are clean, straight and accurate.

Thank you gentlemen, have a great day..

Keeping it tool related can we change croaky to rasp! :lol_hitti Well it sounds more forum related.

Sorry. I just had to do something to make that sound better.

That is one killer saw, can't wait to see that thing working.

tweidman it sure is and I can't wait either..:3gears:

I reckon the first job for the saw should be whipping up a frame for an overhead dual axis gantry crane that covers the entire shed - and the acquisition of a forklift.

Ralf99, good one, if only

No the first job will be cutting up some steel to make a mobile bench for the beast..

1/2: would Mrs. 1/2 approve maybe that gantry or BRIDGE CRANE idea? i remembered you had a lift attachment that you could put on your trailer that probably could pick anything up and put it on one of your cool tables/benches but a BRIDGE CRANE could carry some serious steel for a new WEST WING GARAGE ADDITION?

sorry if we are spending your money faster than you can make it, but you are so damn talented we are only try to have you build it so we'll know how and we can all drool.

I haven't asked about your great tenants cause wanted to wait until you felt better, but how is their new home build coming along or have they decided to maybe stay as your tenant/neighbor for the next 20+ years?

cheers

Drives, please please don't get me started:lol:

That lift attachment is on Andrews' work trailer plus we do have two at my our mechanical work shop..;)

That is another project on my list to actually build a gantry, some years ago I scored a nice big length of structural I beam and a one tonne gantry trolley for that exact purpose. I will get around to it one day, really I will..:willy_nil

In regards to the West Wings original tenants, they have finished their new home and sadly moved out in November.

Our new tenants are a young couple that have signed up for 12 months. They are really nice, no loud music at all hours, no partying and keep the place in a reasonable state ( mind you they do not keep the lawn edges as I would so some instruction may be in order. ;) )

View media item 63923
But with all things said and done we are very pleased with them as tenants and they have integrated well into the street.

Their comment was that this house really feels like Home

Thank you gentlemen, have a good one...

Gravelly voice hey? Just in time for Valentines day to get your Joe Cocker/Jimmy Barnes on!

Sounds like you have done very well picking up that saw. Looking forward to seeing it refurbished and running! I have the perfect piece of ACME screw for an electric lift table. Actually I have 4 of them and this would have been a great use for one.

I was struggling with the heat and humidity in the shed over the weekend too. Not even pleasant inside the house. Our heatpump is not chilling well at the moment. Cleaned all the filters but it struggles to maintain 23 degrees. Still under warranty so just need to find the installer to co back and check it out. Have a feeling it may have leaked down or something as it constantly goes into defrost mode. It is almost 7pm, 27C@97% humidity inside the house and I'm melting! Just glad it is overcast and torrential with the slightest breeze.

Guster, I would make a good ( correction 1/10th as good ) as Barnesy at the moment.

An ACME screw would be just the ticket actually.

Work is getting in the way of completing the make over at the moment, I did a full 8 hours today and I have to go in tomorrow for a Graduate Engineers interview and Skin Cancer check up then on Thursday I have a Factory Inspection test of a couple of switchboards which will be another all day affair.:willy_nil
I am only supposed to work 4 hours at a time..you do what you have to do..

Check your suction line on the heat pump ( the big one ) and does it have a nice sweat back at the unit? If not it sounds like there is a refrigerant leak somewhere which you could potentially put down as an installation issue in the first instance.

Stay cool and get it checked out..

1/2: sorry to hear WORK is getting in the way of all your progress in the SHED, but as you say it is sort of fun there and it also probably gets you a few more tool funds to use for your next project.

i'm liking the sound of ACME SCREW and looking forward to anything you build with one.

hope you are not too tired from working a full shift and i'm still sending prayers your tests at the Dr. go well and you beat this thing 100%.

cheers

Drives, you do what you have to do.

Work is not tiring at all and I am coping with it very well.

An ACME screw would just be the bees knees for a lift table..

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, so far they have worked well..

Glad to hear work is not tiring. We all knew they couldn't leave you at 4 hours per day. Or rather you could not take it upon yourself to keep it down to 4 hours. But so good to see you working again. You'll know when it's too much.

A lift table would be so nice, it would just have to displace another bench in the shed.

Andy, doing well:thumbup:

Our HR dept. are taking a cautious approach and trying to keep the reigns on me some what but I am working around those limitations,..

I totally agree that I do know when I have had enough.

Speaking of lift table, totally out of the blue Mrs 1/2 Cup said to me today you do need a lifting aid.

You could have knocked me over with a feather..:thumbup:

My Skin Cancer check for Melanomas today at work was given the all clear..:3gears:

It seems that all planets are in alignment for a little tool shopping now!! WooHoo!
See if you can find something that goes down near ground level and also lifts at least table height, trailer height and truck bed height. I find it useful to be able to pick things from near ground level and lift with one machine rather than multiple.
Happy hunting, you have your official marching orders.

1/2: with all you had going on in November and you had your good tenants move too. I'm really happy to hear you (or your bulldog property manager) found you more good tenants and maybe what they lack in lawn care they will make up with enthusiasm to learn or help you with some of your projects and other chores.

I really was looking for a smaller hydraulic table a few years ago and i found this bigger Jet pallet jack lift instead that would work even better if i had level non bumpy surfaces at my shop where i used it. I need to clear out a lot of stuff to use it there so a smaller table lift like this other one i mentioned might do for quick jobs.

best of luck in your shopping and you can go from basic to almost programmed ones that lift a ton so maybe you can find one that works for you. or as you say buy a few parts and make one yourself that might be even better.

have a great day and when it's light out i'll see if it's sunny or raining, but it's pretty quiet so maybe i'll get lucky and have another day of sun.

cheers

in case you didn't get over to the big vise thread i just posted this big 8 inch Peter Wright (Made in England) blacksmith vise on a homemade stand that i thought was pretty neat in case you might need an idea for your vises cause i can't recall you having one on a stand.

Bob: i know 1/2 Cup owns at least one Blacksmith vise and maybe 2 or more, but I can't recall seeing one mounted. (seriously did you remember or do a search on 1/2's thread?)

1/2: here's a couple more ideas since you said you have a little extra steel to play with.

Wow! Drives. That second picture of your last post is some heavy duty post vise.

A post vise is best mounted against a work bench in a dirt floor blacksmith shop.:D

Bob: If you would have said you remember that post #a few years ago i would have had to call you on that but do you remember if 1/2 made a stand for it cause i knew he had one? I remember he has his gramp's old wagon (maybe an old covered wagon cause it's so old), but forgot the blacksmith vise was his gramp's too. good to see you still have it and i'll get over to your thread and see how your amazing ceiling sheetrock work is coming along.

Andy: the first stand i posted is mostly from steel parts i had laying around that i gave to a 19 year old member. he had the post and i supplied the 4 inch 22 inch diameter base which makes his 7 inch 200 pound vise look small.he even tapped a hole in those plates so he could actually move them cause i wasn't quite able to lift them much after i set them on one of my carts.

that last picture is a stand another member owns that is waiting to find a nice 6,7 or 8 inch stand cause his stand is a tank. yep I wish the middle one was mine cause it has THE LOOK and would do nicely under a shed with a dirt floor and forge nearby.

1/2: while you are working on the AC we thought we'd keep your thread alive and talk a little bit about your new lift and some projects to do with all that steel so hope you don't mind. CARRY ON and here's to a COOL SHED in your future!!

Tempted to look at the heatpump but best left to the service guys while under warranty.

I love the idea of the lift table that Drives posted which looks like a pallet jack crossed with a mini forklift. I could use that a lot. Easily incorporate a couple of SLA batteries, high torque worm gear chain drive.

I was mostly thinking about the one that works similar to a scissor jack. Like the first example Drives had. Those are easy to make and a small motor or even manual driven leadscrew would make lifting effortless. Another option would be a long air-over hydraulic jack. They sell them as replacement upgrades for engine hoists and will actually work very well for this. You could easily drive a long hydraulic ram from an air-over foot-pedal unit. Lowering something heavy may just not be as controlled.

I mistakenly looked into posting an acme threaded rod to Sydney… Crikey moses! Cheaper for me to buy one on Amazon and have it sent to Sydney from the States. The one I have has fine pitch as well, so not perfect for this as you would be winding it forever to get something lifted if by hand.

Guster, let us know how they get on with your heat pump.

The idea of incorporating some SLAs and a high torque worm drive is very tempting and easily achieved. Our drive set ups on our automated irrigation gates use that exact same principle..

Postage would be a killer let me tell you..:shocking:

Have a great day gentlemen, I will get back to the A/C install and the Cold Saw make over which I am still cleaning parts.:eyecrazy:

All, todays effort after work.

The new split air conditioner for the Shed Downunder

The indoor unit installed..

View media item 80771
The out door unit..

View media item 80772
All the electrics are done and dusted ready to flick the switch.

I will get the line set run tomorrow then all I need to do is borrow the Vac pump from work next week and we should be up and running..

No further progress on the Cold Saw make over other than a bit of cleaning and paint prep.

Andrew helped me dig out some 3 x 3 square section this morning from my steel supplies so I can get a start on the stand for my Cold saw, the irony of it is that I will have to take it to work to use the Cold Saw there.:willy_nil

It just never ends :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

But I luv it..

I think 1/2 Cup means he has to cut the steel stock for the saw stand at work because he hasn't put his own saw back together yet. I may be mistaken though...

Air Con looks good now. So what is the story about having to take the saw to work to use it? Do you need 3 phase power?

You are spot on Ralf99 there is still quite a bit of work to do before my Cold Saw is operational and it would be nice to have them come together as one sooner rather than later..

Thank you gentlemen..

1/2: we need that unit's big brother or cousin cause at the moment we don't have any AC at our home and it's been getting into the 90's for about 6 weeks during the summer now when it used to only be a few days or maybe a week at those temps.

i'm always impressed at the quality level and LOOK of your work. VERY WELL DONE!!

let us know how you like it once you turn it on and I bet we already know that answer?

cheers and have a terrific day!!

Fr8: until 1/2 gets time to answer I’m thinking he needs to cut steel for his to be built stand while the saw at home is in pieces waiting for parts. At least that’s what it sounds like so maybe he’ll have the new stand made and when parts show up it’s put it together and start sawing. I also think 1/2 has any power issues if any solved already.

I must have missed something as to why you can not use the saw at home ? :headscrat :dunno:

Gentlemen, apologies for the confusion, I probably did not articulate the situation properly

1. I need to fabricate a stand for my Cold Saw.
2. Until my Cold Saw is back together I will be taking the steel to work and using Works' Cold Saw to complete the cuts.
3. My Cold Saw is a 240 volt unit so power is not an issue .

With all that is going on here at the moment the Cold Saw makeover is taking backstage until I get the air conditioner finished..

Have a top day..

Andy: yep either 1/2 cup put in an action picture or it’s the forum , but I see it too so your eyes are still doing well.

1/2: hope your day is going well and I could use some of your heat here.

Got it  Air Con is Priority :). Makes sense to me.

HOTFR8, The A/C is a priority for sure.

I worked on the refrigerant line set yesterday, it was a bit awkward an long winded as I am running it in side the wall cavity just so its out of sight. So that's all complete with only the terminations to be done this morning.
I have to borrow the vac pump from work early next week to vac the lines the commission the unit.

In the mean time I can get back on to cleaning down and prime painting the cold saw, that is going to take some work let me tell you as it is not only heavy but it is filthy as well. :shocking:

Well your outdoor unit looks operational to me. If you scroll past the photo you can see the fan turning. At least on my monitor.

Must be a forum trick as I noticed that as well.

Andy & HOTFR8, the picture looks unreal. Trust me I haven't flicked the switch as yet..;)

Drives, when you look at the image it does look like the fan blades of the condenser are moving.

Doing well Drives:thumbup:

Our days are getting notably shorter and the over night temperatures are cool to say the least, the day time temperatures are in the mid 80s F but the sun still has some bite..

t wont be long until you start to feel the warm on your neck of the woods..

Moire effect of LCD monitors - mansplain over and out!

Guster, spot on..

All, yet another project of the list, the new workshop split a/c. I vaccumed out the refridgerant lines this morning and set the unit in motion. It worked like a treat.

The work shop air conditioner.

It is going to be great to be able to work in a comfortable environment all year round.:rocker:
