Herb,

Many thanks, it is great to be able find exactly what you are after for sure.

I would hate to guess how many countless hours in the past I have spent looking for that right bolt or screw, now if it I can't find what I am looking for in two minutes flat, I do not have it and then it is a trip to the hardware store.

The reorganisation will be an ongoing project and you are correct the shop is starting to get a nice feel about it.

Regards

With the weather being a little kinder and not reaching the expected 100 F I kept chipping away on the Carport build, I managed to get all the guttering done yesterday.

those hooks in the front have me wondering. sorry if you already mentioned what they are for so if you can enlighten me or just tell me to keep reading your awesome thread that's ok too.

cheers

The brackets are cast replicas I had made some time back, frustrated I not being able to purchase some thing with a little character, I took apart an old antique rail car luggage rack I have then had 20 of them cast at a local foundry just specifically to support the climbing Rose.

1/2: awesome idea. we have wisteria and clematis that climb something like your rose. they usually outlive the wood frame so nice touch with the cast and it looks like maybe you monkey tied the stem onto the cast so it won't fall or blow off.

cheers

I thought I would share a snap of the under side of the carport as it stands now, gutters and down pipes done.

I should finish the flashings this week end, weather permitting, I then need to complete the gable in fills at either end.

I have set my mind on a recessed suspended ceiling using galvanized corrugated iron to continue the industrial look.

I was in Melbourne this week an picked up a nice piece of cold rolled plate for my portable welding table. Direct Steel Supplies in Epping have a great range of off cuts at times. The sheet is 33 x 24 x 1/4, a little larger than I needed but I can live with it.

Just noticed that's a big ****** chimney you have there, do you by chance have 2 fireplaces and they feed into one chimney as when i was down in Vic i noticed alot of places had up to 3 fireplaces in them.

The carport is looking great and can't wait to see the suspended cm ceiling. And love the little portable welding table, do you think you have enough tables yet, probably not.;) Still looking for the gutters:dunno:.
Keep up the good work doer.

Neat progress.

No idea why I am asking, but I like to know stuff like this.

Were the guys at the foundry happy to just do 20 items, and did the fact you had the plug as a sample mean costs were contained?

I would think it was an expensive order, but am always happy to be surprised.

Fabulous on all!! Love the welding table and clamps as well!

Best Regards
Herb

Thank you Herb The table is at a nice working height for me, I will not have to stoop or grovel on the floor any more. I intend to drill a few holes with the mag drill so that I can utilise my bench clamps on the table in much the same way as I do with the Fabrication table.

No Lee, there is only one fire place attached to the chimney. We have a gas heater in there at the moment. Older homes do have exactly that, back to back usually.

Thank you BF There are a couple of tables still to come an Industrial Dining Table for Mrs 1/2 Cup which is a work in progress and there is a pile of timber here just waiting to be fashioned in to the odd table or two.;)

BTW I will post a more detailed pic of the gutters and down pipes.

Thank you Rian Let me put it this way, it is not what you know but who you know in this case and it cost me a donation to the social club, certainly having a plug made the job very affordable as they worked out at about $20 AU each. They were just rough cast and I did all the finish work on them.

Have a great weekend guys and thanks for dropping by.

1/2, it was great to browse your thread. Your attitude on sustainability vs the almighty $$ was refreshing to read on your solar install. Loving your "rebel" dog too. Your fab table is a work unto itself..and also my next project as I need to build a compact rolling bench/table with fold up wings. Mine won't be quite as nice as yours though :)

We have a proposal under way for my business to populate the roof with panels, bringing our effective power use to zero. Heat (it's -25C out there right now) is our largest cost, but after a complete gut and careful renovation, our 9500 sq ft cost less to heat than my house. It saves us about $6000/yr. So now with some time under your belt with the PV panels, how are they working in terms of getting your footprint closer to zero?

Many thanks for dropping by Denwood, much appreciated.

Looking forward to following your bench build.

I am big on sustainability, reclaim, reuses, repurpose and recycle. Our next investment will be a solar hot water, having solar has really started me investigating new areas where we can make more savings in terms of our energy use, that said one year in with the solar its is clear we still have a ways to go to get to zero.

The system gives me the tools to micro manage our usage, which is a great thing moving forward.

Your system has certainly proven its worth.

Yes it is a little tough to see my old car being done by the new owner but i am so lucky he is doing it all the way I wanted except a few upgrades and different paint.

Your projects are looking great!

Keep up the great work and I wish you and your family a happy Saturday!

Thanks Sean, its great to see your car has gone to a good home.

Its been pretty hot here this weekend, around 100 F, I spent nearly half a day in the garden, edges, hedges and lawns. I filled our green waste bin in one foul swoop.

I managed to finish the flashings over the weekend and I will have a crack at the ridge cap next weekend and that will finish off all the roof work.

This is the view from the rear of the Carport the flashings finish it off, I am also putting some thought into the gable end infill panels at the moment.

Tougher man than me! I feel exhausted when it is warm and I am working... 12 degrees F is a nice working temp for me! :bounce:

Looks like you have been busy before it gets hot again this week.

That really does look good 1/2 Cup. Well done!

Thanks guys,

I must admit I am not big on the heat 70 - 80 is just nice and comfortable. Out here you have to work around it some what, appropriate clothing, hat, sunnies, sunscreen, keep yourself hydrated and pace your self.
Over the weekend most of my outdoor work was done in the morning and early evening when I was reasonably cool and the sun didn't bite so much.

I still don't fathom how you guys work in the snow like you do but when you think of it, its just the reverse of what we do.

Have a good one..

Talking about the heat we had 13.5 mm of rain here over night with a massive thunderstorm and it is to steamy to work outside here. 1/2, are you in the office today or home trying to work ?

In my nice air conditioned office today, I saw the lightning show, which was awesome but no rain.

Its still pretty steamy here though.

Most places got the light show and no rain. Here must have been the exception. Fills the rain water tanks and keeps the place damp so that is good for me.

Be glad you have been in side as I had to be out in the heat for some of today.

My sister in Bendigo posted some great shots of the lightning over there yesterday.
We could do with a good inch of rain it is drying out here and a constant battle keeping the garden watered HOTFR8.

Fine work on the carport.... as usual, you always put out a top job!

Many thanks Hef, I don't always get it right but I give what I do my best shot..

Have a great day guys..

Good progress on the carport 1/2cup, and the welding table will be a useful addition - I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a suitable offcut for a while now (plenty of alloy here at work, but no suitable steel....yet).

Thanks Mark, we don't get many offcuts at work that go for scrap, I happened to be in the right place at the right time, just passing so to speak and it cost a whole $30,

Cheers

I do need to find something soon, my back gets really sore after very quickly these days.

I plan on making mine pull apart for storage - I really like your design (I presume the top folds to vertical?), but I don't have the space for it.

Edit:- I might have to actually buy an offcut!

Mark,

I hadn't really considered making the table fold up but it could be easily done at this point in the build.

You have given me some food for thought.

I totally agree that you have to make things easy on yourself and as ergonomically friendly as possible.

Thought I'd stop by your side of the world.

Figure you must be on vacation, or working too hard.

How's the carport coming?

No vacation, I wish. There is a fair bit happening at work that keeps me out of the shed. This week end should see the ridge cap installed on the carport.

That will finish all the roof work, I am over tek screws that's for sure. Next on the agenda will be the gable end in fills and then the suspended corrugated iron ceiling, its getting there but there aren't enough hours in the day at the moment.

Thanks for dropping by..

HOTFR8,

There is over 1000 teks in the Carport build and only 100 or so pop rivets. I am on the last 150 teks this morning on the ridge cap, my poor old Ryobi screw gun has had enough and needs a rest.:D

Regards

So the question is who is tired the most ? Screw gun or 1/2Cup ? :bounce:
I guess with this weather you will be glad when you have it finished.
