Hi again 1/2 cup,

Just finished going through all the posts up to this point. What a wonderful read.

Still envious of your skill, and patients for your projects.

Re: Richmond Air Base, Or air bases in general. Have you ever been to Altona Air Base?? They have an air museum there that is free to the public, and some great exibits. Used to take my son there, and let him enjoy the planes (almost as much as myself).

Cheers,

Ken

Zero maintenance.

My two favorite words.

I have to add "simplicity" along with "zero maintenance".

Having the perspective of the carport down the driveway, I now completely "get" the genius of the spider leg design.

Really impressed.

A design to add to all the ideas filed in the back of my head.

Many thanks Rian:thumbup:

I was limited to keeping the undercover area the same as the original carport foot print so I had to think out of the square so to speak.

Regards

Only because you can relate.....

Just bought a "new" used once and put back in box, biscuit jointer for £35.00 and can collect as it is on my work patch. EBay delivers again.

Means I can get the planks for the trucks bed together.

1/2: your carport didn't look too bad before, but your new one is like i mentioned one of the nicest I've seen. just curious if you made that driveway with the brick trim or did you inherit all that brick work?

I need to redo my driveway and i know i could do small sections like that as opposed to hiring out some cement guys to come pour a slab even if it's stamped with a pattern.

i also like the brick planters. if i remember correctly you were able to save the climbing plant for the front of your carport. yes? very impressive work and good luck planning and making phase 2.

cheers

We did the concrete part of the driveway many years ago and then all the brick pavers in fill and edging I did myself.

All the garden edging and planters are done in bricks to match the house which I did myself. I had a semi retired old school brick layer do the front fence, it was to big for this black duck. I did the footings, cuts and labored for him.

1/2: amazing work as per the usual. i'd love to own a house with a huge brick fence out front. nice work on the driveways and grounds. i'm hoping to find my tools and get my 60 x 150 lot looking half as nice as yours this spring and summer.

I'm not the fastest around because it took me almost 2 summers to transform my front yard a few years ago. before and after pictures and i still have a few things to do besides the driveway.

i'm planning on building this fence soon which i might have already posted a few pictures here. if i have i'll delete and just say the word.

just letting you know that you are an inspiration to me and probably a lot of others with all your quality work, pictures and great descriptions. not to mention your links and other pictures you post.

keep it up and it's only over when we stop breathing so keep thinking because it makes us tick.

cheers mate

Insomnia *****. Woke at 03.00..... Now still awake on the web.

I bought cheap, for the function I need it for,, it will be perfect.

It is an Erbauer, another Chinese made tool, from Screw-Fix and having read about 20 plus reviews, it would be fine for the purpose I have in mind, then, depending on how well it has performed I. Real world terms, I will sell it on, on EBay or keep it.

Keep in mind, I need it to get 18 skirting boards at 93mm together to form 9 planks. They were previously planed and thicknessed to get all the adhesive etc off them, so still need sanding, finishing. So once jointed, and set together, I will run them all over with my belt sander to get and even finish, before cutting and fitting to the truck bed, so the slight variation this machine may offer in accurate fit and finish, is acceptable to me.

This is a link to the EBay purchase.

Thanks again drives, we love our front fence. We did it about 6 years ago. I salvaged the bricks, about 4000 odd, from an old dairy that a mate was demolishing. The bricks are from the same brickworks and vintage that the house was built from.

Your place looks fantastic and I can appreciate the work and passion that goes into establishing and maintaining your home, garage and gardens.

The Garage Journal provides us with a terrific opportunity to share our passions with others like no other and at times, I know I personally that I have needed the inspiration to get off my **** and have a fair dinkum crack at things and found that right here.

Great looking place 1/2 Cup. Love all the brick.

Thanks Coop.

Brought myself up to date on your fantastic work!! Your place is looking superior. You have done a great job on it. I noticed and really liked the bars on windows of your shop. I am sure it's not just for decoration either. That is definitely something on my need list here.
All your landscaping and fences look really attractive. The carport is fabulous as well!!
I just can't say enough on what you have done. Great Job!!

We certainly enjoy having the privacy of the front fence as it is, it also gives us a sense of security as well, although if someone wants to get in its not too hard.

Have a great weekend guys.

A little change of pace today, we attended the dawn ANZAC service here this morning.
Being the hundredth anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli the turn out in drizzling rain was fantastic with tens of thousands attending this year and a proud moment to see my Dad in the march.

Lest we forget.

This afternoon I decided to replace one of the older split air conditioner units in the house that had a leaking evaporator, being on R22 its days were numbered.

I have had the replacement in the shed and taking up space for 18 months now, so it was time to wipe it from my to do list now that the weather is a little milder.

With the old unit pumped down, isolated and disconnected I then fitted the new outdoor and indoor units ready to do the refrigerant lines, vac and charge.

Hey 1/2 Cup,

Haven't been on here for a while, good to catch up with your projects. The carport came out brilliant, well done! And congrats on the wedding, nice cars present there too! I drove my fathers MGA to my wedding as my Midget hadn't been finished at the time.

I had been contemplating contacting you about maybe dropping by over/after Easter when we were in the Yarra Valley for the MG Car Club National Meeting, but we had some issues (had a fairly major accident on the way down, we're ok but the car is not) and it didn't happen. Would love to drop by and meet you some time, and check out all the work in person!

Hope all is well with you and yours. Cheers,

Andrew.

We missed the National meet, my eldest was there and from all account it was a fantastic event and you couldn't pick a better spot for an event like that.

Our next event is the Historics at Winton.

The wedding was at Balgownie Estate just out of Yarra Glenn, a simply spectacular place.

Sad to hear but glad to hear every one is ok and hope that the car can be repaired.

The door is always open, the kettle is always on and there is always a coldy in the fridge, welcome any time.

Thanks again...

1/2: so do you know who the father is of your pups? I know it will be hard to let those 4 find other homes so how many are staying in you stable?

Nice work on the air conditioning. have you guys down under heard of this new Testla battery to provide electricity for you home or business?

Congrats on the new arrivals! They are adorable!

Thanks Coop, they are little cuties all right.

That'll keep ya busy!

Rivenn, fortunately they are pretty docile at the moment but watch this space.

Sweet.

The best part about puppies, along with being just that, is their puppy breath.

Weirdly a love it or hate it smell.

Thanks Rian, they are not too bad at the moment.

Plans for any Kennel builds ?

HOTFR8, if Mrs 1/2 Cup had her way I wouldn't be building a carport :(

Have a good one guys.

Thanks mate! Repairing the car is off the table short term, it hit trees front and rear and would/will need a lot of work to get it straight again. :( If your eldest was at Nat meet, ask them about the couple that won the hard luck trophy, they put up a picture of the car when they awarded it to us... But I'm not ruling it out yet longer term. For the short term, we have already picked up another Midget, and are currently tidying it up ready for a quick spray job so we can get it registered. Plan then will be to gradually get it running and driving 100% how we want it over the next few years while keeping it on the road as much as possible, then blow it apart, strip it, and paint it properly. We'll see how that goes! Insurance has paid up, so that's good, just waiting to get the wreck delivered back home from the smash repairers now.

Thanks 1/2 cup. As you say, while the damage to the car is certainly disappointing, we are both very glad to be ok. It could potentially have been much worse.

Cute pups. In GJ fashion, champion pups could translate into some nice new shop tools. I know, I know. That won't happen. :D

Tell Mrs. 1/2 Cup congrats.

Thanks shorty, you have planted the seed so to speak. I was pondering on your comment and you are right they would equate to a substantial investment in new SO tools.:headscrat

I am not quite to sure how I would approach the subject though.:headscrat

1/2: I know you posted about the same time as i did the other night or day depending on when you posted. congrats again on the pups and i'm guessing that Mrs. 1/2 loves her dogs as much or maybe more than you like your tools so have fun with the new crew keeping her and you pretty busy.

have you heard about the new Tesla battery to store power for commercial and home use to take our homes off the grid. it might be old news to you guys down under or maybe with all the sunshine you have maybe you've got solar power already fine tuned. anyway it looks interesting from the little I've heard and read about it.

i really like how you have all the bricks covering the paths around the house and i bet hauling and cleaning the mortar off those 4,000 bricks was no picnic.

cheers

1/2 cup, great pics of all the brickwork, carport, etc. and nice looking pups, too. Always something interesting here. What do the new A/C units use for refrigerant? They sure are compact. We had to replace our heatpump with a new Trane 3 ton unit 10 years ago. It's about 2'x3'x6' and we had to crane it up to the roof mount. About $5k back then.

[Metalhead 140, sorry to hear of your unfortunate incident, but good to hear everyone is OK! Also nice to see it didn't dampen your spirits through the acquisition of a new project car. Best wishes!]

Your right Mrs 1/2 Cup is right into her Australian Silky Terriers. She has shown Evie for the last 18 months to gain her title of Australian Champion. The father has been titled as a Supreme Australian Champion.
They are doing really well and are gaining weight on a daily basis.

The pups, depending on how they turn out will be destined for showing or sold as pets as the case maybe. Mrs 1/2 Cup has the pick of the litter when the time comes.

Changing subject, I am watching with keen interest just how the Tesla Battery goes, I believe its not due until the later half of this year. There has been a fair bit in the media and online out here recently. I read yesterday one of our local energy providers AGL is bringing out similar technology.
Watch this space:thumbup:

The 4000 bricks were a fair challenge, basically I demolished an old dairy brick by brick over a few weeks to get them. I was able to clean them, for the most part anyway, on site as the original mortar was fairly easy to remove with a tomahawk fortunately.
I would do a load or two every night after work then several every weekend and was able to leave the rubble and unsalvageable bricks on site to be used as fill on a farm laneway.

It was worth the effort as bricks of that era are getting harder to come by.

The A/C unit still has to be vacuumed out at this point, I am waiting to get hold of a mates pump this weekend to complete the job.

Many thanks Ric.

The A/C runs on R410 and come pre charged, it is rated at 6 KW heating and cooling. Cost wise, in Australia the are around AU$1200.00 with installation adding anywhere between $400 -800 dependant on the pipe run etc, etc.

We have 3 spilts that well and truly covers our needs, with natural gas heating as well.

Your heat pump replacement must have been a big job, roof mounting really adds another dimension to things.

I am sure Metalhead will appreciate your kind words Ric.

Many thanks for dropping by.

1/2: your brick adventures at the old dairy sound similar to the 45 days i spent stopping at a 100 year old steel fabrication factory a few months ago where the owners were retiring and hauling out NOS 50+ year old steel, almost 100 year old tools and such. i really should have worn my coveralls because within 5 minutes of being there each day i looked like i'd put in a full day's shift in the mines. here's a few of my treasures i'm hoping to either find a way to power them up at my shop or find good homes for them. some pretty cool cabinets and carts too. i hope you don't mind me adding pictures to your thread and if i should post elsewhere just say the word and i'll delete them. thought you and your followers might like to see what i saved from the scrap bins.

speaking of power has anybody on GJ started a thread about Tesla's new battery and if not i'd love it if you were the lead guy on that if you would like to start one.

i bet the puppies are already keeping you and the Mrs. very busy and talk about good blood lines.

That's one awesome treasure trove, thanks for posting:thumbup::thumbup:

There has been a thread stated on the Tesla batteries a couple of days ago

The pups have been fantastic, they are pretty docile at the moment and don't move too far as yet but watch this space.
