Impressive bench build.

Just to side track a little I showed my Solar Power Installer the Xmas Tree Controller whilst he was here yesterday and he was very impressed with what you had made for me. He often calls in as he is also a Hot Rodder with an A Model of all things although he had not been here since I did the extensions.

I spent some quality shed time (QST) over the weekend on the bench builds.

Fabrication bench - top procurement, fit and trim.

Bench seats - finish dressing the welds.

Retro Industrial table - brackets.

Pics to follow later.

Oh stop teasing and post a photo of yours.

The priority at the moment is the fabrication bench, then i will get stuck into bench seats. I have to get some tube stops, timber for the tops and make some more brackets to fix the tops. At this point i am in no hurry as i need the fabrication bench to fabricate the others;)

This is pretty much where i am up to at the moment with them and not likely to do much more for the next couple of weeks.

More pics tonight.

That's cool I like that :)

There are 104 csk set screws in the plates, I did not realise the enormity of what I had undertaken as it equates like this;

8 x measure.
8 x cuts.
12 x bends.
104 x measure.
104 x centre punches.
104 x 1/8 pilot holes.
104 x 3/16 holes.
104 x counter sinks.
104 x 3/16 pilot hole - legs.
104 x 1/4 tapped holes.
104 x install set screws.

Boring, no pun intended, but worth the effort.

I was looking forward to the weekend to catch some more "Quality Shed Time" (QST in future posts) until I was roped into the commissioning of 90 kva Standby Generator set ( Cummins unit ) at one of our offices on Saturday which means we will have the power off some critical infrastructure for a few hours and we need to re feed the essentials whilst this is happening, a fair logistical exercise in it self so it all hands on deck for this one. I will post some pics of the install, as I know there are some Cummins Officianardos out there.

You may notice that we still have the concrete form work around the Generator pad,
we had some really tight deadlines on this one.
At work at the moment, just about to head to site and meet the Cummins rep. for commissioning.

Say G'Day to the Cummins Guy for me as he will most likely know me or know of me because of the truck.

They are a popular Power Set and I see them at many places now. Mostly Medical Clinics that need back up power for day surgery.

Rob from Cummins Wodonga did all the prestart and commissioning checks, this is the first Cummins unit we have in our gen set fleet and I am impressed with the build quality and it performed faultlessly. As it turned out it was one of our better commissioning by far.

I think I met Rob at Elmore Field Days this year. As I said you see many of those Gen Sets now. Interested to know where the Engine is made given it looks to be a 6BTA (6 - Six Cylinder BT - Engine Series A -Aftercooler ). Engine ID plate will be on the left side of the engine if I am correct just behind that massive fan cover.

You are correct - 6BTA - Tata/Cummins unit, made in India.

Scored an old piece of 5/16 steel plated for the fabrication bench top, I had a mate cut it just a little over size ready to fit and descale, that's one heavy lump of steel to manoeuvre around. There is a fair bit of clean up to happen with it so we will see just how it turns out.

Looks like you need that one on wheels. Will be interested to see how you move it about and make it work as a bench.

The plate is for the Fabrication bench which has that nice set of castors i brought,#83, the table that the plate is sitting on is the Retro Industrial Table this will have a red gum timber top which i wasnt invisaging putting wheels on, but man is it heavy, so i am looking for a set of old cast iron ones to suit.
I have spent the morning sanding off the rust and mill scale and the only thing that comes any where moving it is 16 grit discs, tough stuff.
I will post pics later..

Plates installed.

I have also attempted some instant patina, I have wiped the base with brick cleaner and will let nature do the rest.

I like those braces ,I recon they are going to add character to the plain frame, looking forward to see them finished. How thick are you going to use the timber for the top? Because those posts look like 75 mm(and sorry to be nosy ,but be careful those posts look like they are galvanized specially being from a fence )

I have some very old Red Gum bridge beams that I scored a few years back from a road crossing that was being upgraded at work, I was at site looking at some electrical issues and the project engineer offered them to me as they were only getting burnt on site just to get rid of them, 2 tandem trailer loads with the assistance of 4 blokes I rescued the lot. I gave away 1 load to the guys that helped me, some of the beams took 4 of us to move.

So that's where the top will come from, that said I am thinking of around 50 - 75 mm thick for the top?? Similarly with the finished dimensions I will do a mock up ( and post pics to get some feed back ) It will be all about proportion and balancing the aesthetics of the finished top.

Yeah you are right the frame is 75 x 75 x 2 SHS and some of it is galvanised, I have strategically hit with a clean and strip disc then wiped it over with brick clean acid then left it out in the rain to let it rust, I am surprised just how thick the gal coating is. I am after instant Patina. More pics to follow later on just how the process is working.
I showed a work college some of my earlier pics, he looked at me and said with distain " that looks just like you pulled that piece of s#@t from the metal recyclers". My reply was " I have achieved what I set out to do haven't I..

Many thanks for being nosy southern_ tango, that's what I am here for..;)
