I am curious with this generator history. The unit is painted the same shade of green that was on all the Onan generators I have used at work. Is Cummins and Onan now part of the same company or one bought by the other?

Granted it has been several years since I have had to deal with them on a maintenance level.

There was some conjecture with our engineers, so the subject has been fairly topical around here as well..;)

About the Indian built Cummins :headscrat ? Sorry all that is going over my head.

Cummins own Onan. http://www.cumminspower.com/en/onan/

Although in this part of the world Cummins will not sell a smaller Petrol (Gasoline) powered Gen Set you still have to buy them from CumminsOnan. Open for correction but Cummins purchased Onan to get more Gen Set sales with the bigger Cummins Engines like we see in 1/2Cups post earlier.

The smallest Gen Set you can get here from Cummins is a 4BT or the newer variant of a 4 cylinder Diesel from Cummins.

Apologies for that, there is a ******* contest between some of the mechanical engineers (who think they know better) and our IT department, who purchased the unit(and also think they know better) at work, over just where some of our generator fleet has been manufactured or sourced from. Then there is me in the middle.:(

I am not sure, but from the documentation that came with it, I understand it was built and assembled entirely in India and shipped early October this year.
I must say their QA is second to none I my experience.

Interestingly, I was at a major supplier (no names to protect the innocent) of generator sets earlier this year doing a Factory Acceptance Testing on another 50 KVA unit that we purchased at work.
I was offered a coffee so we were shown where the tea room was, low and behold on the wall there was a huge map of mainland China at least 3 mt. x 3 mt. indicating where all their stuff was made and sourced from.
It included 6 or so recognised engine manufacturers, a similar number alternator manufacturers and portable generator gen set suppliers.
It blew me away.

Do you ever sleep? I noticed your posts are at all hours.

It appears that way I must admit, the explanation for my nocturnal behaviour is in fact that we have 2 Australian Silky terrier dogs ( the Rodents in future posts ) and earlier this year Mrs 1/2 Cup, in her infinite wisdom, took on charge a third Rodent pup from the breeder in Ballarat for showing. The pup "Evie" is separated from the other two at night but is very much in tune with any little noise or stirrings from the other two then she starts barking wanting to get out her self, then its muck up time
usually between 2 or 3 in the morning and I am buggered If I can get back to sleep:( so I am up and at em at that time.
My "normal" start time at work is 7.30 am but I like to get in at 6 to get some work done before the phone starts and emails fill my in box, I usually do 10 -11 hour days.

Most week nights I am in bed by dark so most times I get about 5 -6 hours quality sleep.

The Rodents

How does the security system like the smaller 3 dogs ?

Just tell both parties it is a CUMMINS. Cummins are built in the US, UK as well as China an India and that is only a few locations. See the list I have now found >
http://www.cummins.com/cmi/navigationAction.do?nodeId=9&siteId=1&menuId=1002

Cummins build to the same quality all over the world. The name Cummins after all has been about for a very long time. Ever heard of Clessie Cummins ? http://cumminsengines.com/cummins-indy-racing-heritage

Mind you Cummins Sth Pacific source from what ever part of the world can supply at the best price. So what if mine is a Dong Feng and your Gen Set is a TATA. All built to the same standards under licence from those two locations.

Like Rob the Cummins Service guy said " If it has a Cummins badge its a Cummins". From what I have seen I have to agree.
I actually convinced one of the naysayer engineers at work today, as we have a 220 Kva to replace in the near future.

Actually the little pests rag her up if they get half a chance Shelby just walks away.
We keep them well separated at all times..

I used to be a Ford man until I drove a Cummins powered vehicle. Now we have lost Ford here what does that tell you ? My next vehicle could be a Foton or a Nissan but only a Cummins powered version.

A security system that can keep its cool. I like that.

I have to agree in terms of vehicle selection moving forward.:headscrat

The Garage Guardian has a three person pass code, me, Mrs 1/2 Cup or my eldest son and that's it end of story, you would be a brave person or just plain stupid to jump a fence here. Shelby has this savage bark from hell and is pretty intimidating to boot. She loves the shed but has a tendency to relocate tools and things like grease rags, sand paper goes missing, often to be found discreetly buried in the garden.
The police and special forces use the breed a lot.

Things are slowing down around the Shed Downunder at the moment with Mrs 1/2 Cup winding up in to top gear getting ready in preparation for Christmas. Our youngest, his wife and our 18 month old first grandson are coming down from Sydney to stay with us for a week or two over the festive season, we are looking forward to that.
I have 2 weeks leave as of the end of this week and I am really looking forward to the time off I can assure you.

Its been a huge few weeks around here and looking forward to 4 pm Friday, work wise with no phone, no emails, no project documentation reviews, no tender assessments, no people issues, no meetings, no on site work, no safe work method statements, no schedules, no contract payments to process, no deadlines, no cranky boss for a whole two weeks.

Well I am just worn out reading that and you have had time to post here as well.

You should post up how you have the place wired for that proposed gen Set you have in mind. Given it came up in my topic. I would like to see how you have set that up as mine is very different.

Some more images of the random projects I have done over the past year in the Shed Downunder.

A cast iron drum handler from the 1950s I brought off Ebay for $30, It came with the drum that was blue, painted with rattle cans and applied some period correct Castrol decals.

A kind neighbour donated the drum pump that believe it or not was part of a garden art feature.

View media item 31940

From Ebay yet again, this nice little cast iron table, I believe was originally a wooden case making table. I will leave this just how it is. At $50 I just had to have it.

A Cast iron turnstile - Melbourne Cricket Ground Circa 1900, Gate 14 . A nice piece of historic memorabilia. I make no apologies as this was another Ebay score $100. There is at least that value in scrap cast iron .
Once again I will not touch it, stays as is.
Southerbys sold one recently or be it in a little better condition for $5000.00
There is quite a bit of history attached to this piece, however that's a story for another post, quite a bizarre twist actually. :pimpflash

Then whist I was picking up a (sorry for repeating my self here) another Ebay purchase in a older part of Melbourne, sitting in a pile of stuff destined for the hard rubbish collection were these lovely little numbers and the Ebay seller asked wether it was interested in then when they caught my eye. Yep you bet I replied - another donation to the Shed Downunder at no cost, gratis, free for the taking.

Back from sandblasting and powder coating in Satin Black $130.00 later.

View media item 32435

Some stainless hard ware for reassembly.

View media item 32436

Savaged Australian Red Gum 75 year old framing timbers reclaimed for the bench seat.

View media item 31937

The finished item, pretty proud of the way it came up.

Funnily enough ( hell I am sounding like a broken record here ) there were a few more cast iron gems I scored from the same place, more on that later as I don't have any pics as yet.

Sorry if I am boring any one (pun intended)

Picked up this old Dawn Australian made drill for $40.00, yep you guessed it EBAY!!

Mrs 1/2 Cup drove for two hours to do the local pick up bit, I am lucky she likes driving!!

Followed the link and emailed them. I should have had a better look the day I was there .

I have not tasted the Bohemian or Brown yet, I will give you an unbiased assessment after Christmas day.

The Pale has a hint of citrus and apricot of all things, some don't like it but I recon its smooth as.

I am usually a VB , Melb. or Crown lager drinker when I am having a coldy but this boutique stuff is really good.

Try this place?

At Apple Annie's Bakery, Café & Accommodation - Castlemaine you'll be able to enjoy a Brookes Beer Bohemian Lager!

or

What about a beer with your breakfast? Why not?! Breakfast and Beer in Daylesford are now serving Brookes Beer Bohemian Lager and Brown Ale all day!!

I could not find any load rating on the chain either, does that contravene the Worksafe regs, I will in the interest of a safe workplace look that up tomorrow.:lol_hitti

Sheltered life with Beer for breakfast. Are we getting off topic here or what ? C'mon back to that shed. I want to see that power switch you kept talking about. This is almost as bad as the old tool shed we keep hearing about in another topic and we are yet to see that as well.

I'll need a beer just to relax waiting here. Do not think it made 40c here today. 38c would be closer.

It just cracked the 40 C here on the Met site, there is thunder storms brewing between here and Bendigo as we speak.

I will post some more details of the proposed Manual change over switch and generator inlet whilst I am on leave.
