As I posted on page11 #220 of this thread, I have been looking through some older photos whilst I have been on leave, with the family staying here, and not to much happening in the Shed Downunder at the moment.

I thought I would share some pictures that detail the build of our Indoor/Outdoor area. The build was a few years ago (pre GJ time for me) and as such I may be a little scant on detailed images but I will try and fill the void with the written word.

Our place was always lacking an outdoor entertaining area and as per usual it was one of those projects that inevitably got put on the back burner for one reason or another. Anyway we bit the bullet and I started by putting pen to paper for the plans to submit for approval.

I hope you find this an interesting diversion from the bench builds and all the other stuff I have on the go at the moment as there is some different construction techniques from what I have seen here on the GJ. as you will see in later posts. Resources from the Shed Downunder playing a pivotal role in the build, Mrs 1/2 Cup, myself and tools.

The addition is at the rear of the house, adjacent to the shed and I wanted it to be not to much out of character with the rest of the home.

The proposed build.

This is how the back of the house looked like prior to the start of construction, you will notice to the right I have put up some barricade fence because at the time of the build, the owner of the property next door had sub divided and was building a 2 bedroom unit at the rear of the house to the right you see pictured.

We removed the boundary fence and privacy lattice extension screens, that I had built some years earlier, to facilitate the construction of a brick wall of the units' garage on the boundary.
The green posts you see were destined to become the frames for my bench builds.

This photo was taken approximately six months or so prior to the start of our build and this was our blank canvas.

View media item 36566
As I indicated earlier I was none to diligent in taking heaps of photos at that time so I do not have any pics of the initial set out.
The construction permit was issued as myself being nominated as the "owner / builder" so it was my job to engage a sub contractor builder, permits, inspections, insurances and general project management.
The builder was a semi retired chap that the family had known for many years and had completed a number of other projects for us in the past.
In the state of Victoria, and I am sure its the same for the rest of Australia, the roof plumbing is a licenced trade so this was sub contracted out to the builders brother who is a licenced plumber. They are both old school tradesmen and a pleasure to work with.
The builder and myself confirmed the measurements and plans were correct and did a material take off then had the trusses and support beams engineered and manufactured locally.
In the mean time I fabricated the support columns and all the attachment brackets in the Shed Downunder.
From the time the trusses and materials arrived on site here it was really only a couple of days work and the basic frame as you see it was up.
You may also notice that the unit and fencing next door has been completed and see what's left of our back yard.

View media item 36567
More of the frame work, nearly ready for the roof to start to be installed.
This picture was taken just after the footings were poured they are 2 ft. in diameter and 3ft. 6" deep.

Still to much grass left Steve, put up another shed and save on mowing.:D

:lol_hitti, I have to agree!! I have already started on the "The Storage Solution" and I am in the process of ripping out the fernery that's on the west side of the carport. This will give me an additional 3 mt x 10 mt of storage shed. Yet another of Mrs 1/2 Cup inspired initiatives that I readily agreed to.

We used the outdoor area for a little while as it sat and we pondered long and hard about making it a multipurpose room and get the best of both worlds so to speak.

As I articulated before I missed on taking progressive photos of the build.
So we move forward a little in time, where the brick piers have been completed and the decision was made to make it in to a multi purpose room.

The image below shows the start of the installation of the all steel flooring system I elected to use.

All you need to do is provide a detailed plan and Metaland did the rest and supplied the complete kit right down to the computations, brackets, fixings and Duragal steel.

Here's a link to the web site.

The entire flooring system took me a total of three days work to complete with no assistance and that included digging the post holes and mixing the cement by hand.

Being adjustable I was able to get it level to within 1/16 inch all over and that was using a micrometre level unit.

Not a weld in it and as solid as a rock.

The project justified the purchase of a Bostich framing, Senco C bradder and finishing nail guns. I scored a great deal at a hardware shop trade day where the rep gave me a carton of framing nails to win the deal.

Material take of to finish at this point;
. Windows and doors - sized and ordered
. Framing timber.
. Insulation and vapour barrier.
. Dry wall.
. Structa flooring sheets. ( similar to your OSB but a little denser and designed specifically for flooring).
. Kiln dried graded Mountain Ash flooring from a local wood mill.
. Skirts and architraves.
. Hardie plank cladding.
. Air conditioner and installation materials. An over sized 8kw inverter unit.
. Curtains and blinds. I left that with Mrs 1/2 Cup.:scared:
. Misc hardware, poly urethane floor coating, glue and screws.

I know you are showing this as a past build so can I ask how long ago that took place ?

The first stage of the veranda only build was about 4 years ago, it remained that way for about a year until we decided to make a room out of it.
I am guessing but it took me about six months to complete 100% then there has been progressive upgrades of the landscaping on the outside since.
When I get some time into the future we are planning a deck out the back.

And just an update, the family has returned to Gosford safely and we are starting to see the household and shed return to normality.

I am off work until Monday the 6th so I will get a little more done on the work bench builds, I went to work this morning to use the cold saw on some RHS for the draw slide supports and misc. brackets. I have been continuing the acid wash on the retro bench and it is progressing well, pics to follow.

We are having issues with our Telstra land line at the moment which has been getting progressively worse, no home phone and intermittent internet that drops out periodically. I rang Telstra this morning and performed some basic line tests to confirm it was at there end and not our gear at fault. It looks like it will be Friday before they look at it.

You will be pleased to know we have made a commitment to have solar installed, this wont start for another 6 weeks.
The panels will be installed on the shed roof and I have elected to go for a six kw setup using the latest technology individual Micro inverters that are fitted to the solar panels and feed AC straight into the shed switchboard meaning no huge inverter bolted to a wall in the shed.
The thing that gets up my nose is that I am a licenced electrical contractor and cant do the install as I don't have solar accreditation  anyway I will get over it.

Cheers and happy new year:thumbup:

Will be keen to see more of the Solar as that sounds very interesting. Dull here so had to give the Gen Set a run earlier. Will your system still supply power if the grid fails ?
Hope you get that phone line fixed.

I will post more moving forward,

When we lose mains the system will shut down, hence the gen set option.
I could put a battery bank in but due to the lack of real estate I am not keen to do so at this moment in time.

I will be able to monitor the system and individual panel performance on my PC and remotely as well. The advantage of this system is that should you have a poor performing panel it does not affect the rest of the system.

Our phone line failed after a rain event some years back at that time I was that pissed off in the time it was taking to repair I ended up fixing the problem myself it turned out to be a connection on the power pole out the front that had water in it and was corroded, one ladder, one screw driver and two connectors later - all fixed. I missed my calling as a telcom tech I think:thumbup:

Your Solar system I will be keen to see at some point in time. Although with (if) the mains failed you have panels doing nothing.

Water in the phone pit has been an issue here many times.

You may be forced to do a site visit and inspection at some point.

I have been doing quite a bit of research in regards to the mains fail situation and I have some ideas on the back burner that I may pursue after the installation is complete and inspected. Let me say this technology will be my friend.:D

The land line has been in and out most of the day, I get brief periods when the modem will work like now but still no phone.

:headscrat Forced ? :scared::confused: I would like to visit but with no force.
As for the inspection. What will that involve ?

Again keen to know how you proceed seeing you have seen both my small UPS system and the whole property system here. I would still like to add a Wind Gen to one or both of mine. Being careful still as many make a lot of noise.

Sometimes its the little things that get noticed, like how you dig a nice neat stump hole and there is no loose dirt anwhere to be seen. Pride in a job well done or just doing it the right way from the start.
My old man would alway say that there is only one way to do a job, the correct way.

The long and the short of it the door is always open and the welcome mat out (provided you can get past Shelby) at the Shed Downunder be it for a cuppa, a chat, beer or what ever.

I have been lucky with the posts thus far but Mrs 1/2 Cup had a fair bit of trouble earlier, it appears to be working ok now, still no phone.

I will be keeping you updated on the solar progress.;)

Thanks for the kind comments gazza:thumbup:

I guess I am just old school (what ever that is), brought up that way from the start by my grand father, my dad and right through my apprenticeship, I sincerely hope it has rubbed of on my two boys some people recon I go over the top, but that just me, its second nature I don't even know I am doing it.

To that end I see the GJ nowadays playing a pivotal role in providing that pride in your work.
I know when I first saw some of my efforts posted by HOTFR8 on the GJ I was pretty chuffed.
I don't always get it right the first time but its about having a go.

Many thanks again and I hope you comments also provide that same sense of pride and ownership to other members in their endevours.

Next time I head up your way may be for an event so I intend to plan to call in. Not sure if the Rod Run is on this year in March in Yarrawonga.

If that refers to the postings on the Xmas Tree controller your name is mentioned every time some one sees the lights. You got that one right  It sure got some good laughs at Christmas here.

Just a bit of an update on the Bench Builds, now that Christmas is over I am getting a little more Quality Shed Time (QST)

My attempt at "instant patina" on the Retro Industrial Table is progressing slowly, with another acid wash yesterday.
I have also made and installed a copper ID tag complete with a random serial number then fixed it with domed head drive screws just to add to the look.

I am letting nature do its work now.

I fitted the bench top to the Fabrication Bench yesterday as well.

Drilled 3/8 holes around the angle iron top support flange, cranked up the amps on the MIG and welded from underneath.
Man is that bench heavy it was a 2 man effort to get it back on its castors.

This weekend I will be focussing on fitting the "pimped vice" and the draw guide support bracket installs.

Promise to stain the whole thing when you're done... with every project you can ever think of for the rest of your life... (mumble the last part)

Note to thread
Telstra have repaired our land line, we now have a dial tone and the internet is not dropping out.
I must say their service has been excellent.
Reported Wednesday (new years day), basic checks performed to establish that they had an issue at their end. Nice call taker. Tick
Reference number given.
Diverted land line to mobile. Tick
Was informed that a Tech would be sent to check Friday. Fine, well will see.
Tech called mobile no Friday lunch time to inform us he was on to it. Tick
Tech called later that afternoon to say he had repaired an issue with the main cable and it was working ok. Tick.
Back on line and now have dial tone. Happy customer.

I finished the draw guide support brackets, alignment and installation to the Fabrication Bench over the weekend (not a real good shot of them I might add)

The support brackets are fabricated from 1" x 2" rectangular hollow section.
Key to the installation was to have them set parallel, square and level, this took about an hour just to get them clamped and tacked up to a point where I was happy with them.

I also completed the final installation of the vice.

Ref Page 4 #77 for my sketches of the build.

We are in holiday mode here at the Shed Downunder and not too much is happening in the shed, we have our Son, Daughter in law and first grandson (18 month old) down from Sydney and staying with us for the next week. Its been a special time for us and are taking the time to make the most of it whist they are here.

I was musing through some pictures last night, after the little bloke had gone to bed and I had some quiet time to myself and found some that I thought would be of interest. Some may be aware that I have my Private Pilots licence.

This was my dads Cessna 150M that I logged some 200 hours in command before he sold it a couple of years ago.

It was awesome! to say the least, as one of my instructors put it " It is the best fun you will ever have with your pants on " so true.

Imagine yourself at the controls of an aircraft with nearly 2000 hp on tap.
I had always dreamed of doing a slow barrel roll in a piston powered fighter plane and now i can say i have been there and done that.

Back to work this week, long days and its been a struggle after having 2 weeks leave, and as a consequence not much had been happening in the Shed Downunder I can't wait for the week end to get back into things again.

The Fabrication bench is to a point where it is useable and I am very happy with the outcome.
In due course I will make and install the draws, I am not in any hurry at the moment.
I have had several sheets of 14# and 16# stainless steel to make them out of which in a brushed finish will provide a nice accent to the all metal bench.
I still have to decide on the draw slides, hardware and purchase them as well, it looks like a trip to the big box store and tool shop again on Saturday morning. ;)

I am planning on concentrating on the red gum timber top for the Retro Industrial table this weekend after doing the basics like lawns and gardens.
It looks like we are in for a hot few days, predictions are 100 +

I have made a start on the timber top for the Retro Industrial Table.
I was fortunate to be given some bridge beams from an old railway crossing we were supervising the an upgrade on. The beams are 5 " x 4" x 12 ft. Australian Red Gum.
The timber has a deep red colour to it that ages to a lovely grey if left in the sun.
It is also an extremely hard timber and difficult to work with at the best of times but the results are worth it in the end. I tried some through my thickneser that had new blades and it really struggled. I have had difficulty finding any one locally that would split them in half for me so I decided to have a go at it with my Circular saw.

Loving these benches by the way, Industrial fir certain :) very nice ........

Thanks andyaus, I am still working on the red gum today talk about messy to work with we have red saw dust every where, no wonder i do not do wood work in the shed.

Have you been up in the jet with your uncle? that would be just an awesome experience. I might add that it would not be a cheap exercise to get an endorsement in one either!!

Where was the picture taken, it looks familiar?

Ardmore Airfield New Zealand and no but how awesome it would be :)

I do love a helicopter flight and my favourite plane flight so far was a Cessna off a dirt runway in Tasmania over wineglass bay :)

I know right, building the deck there has been a lot of dust so after I clean up the bulk of it I use a leaf blower to finish off :) Luckily I only cut in the front garage and no my workshop :)
