I tried to post a reply last week but the net failed me. Table looks great, Red Gum is such a lovely timber.

That table is great really like the look of that wood finish.

Thanks very much for your kind comments guys, i cant wait till I apply the next coats and clear fill the knot holes to see just how it turns out.

The rust is just starting to bleed though the mist coat of black on the frame and is really taking on that aged appearance.

Cheers:thumbup:

Looks like you started with a very nicely made base. I like the way the bottom cross bars wrap around the legs. Who ever made it was an artful craftsman. I'll bet he stepped back when finished and said "This bench is crying out for a red gum top." One man's work can be another man's art.

Page 5 post #93 will give you a clue as to just who built the base.;)

Love the Mini's, awesome little car. My first car was a Mini, a '68 Morris Mini Deluxe 1100, a rare car still with rubber cone suspension and the long gear lever straight in the gearbox. I was told it was a special order for companies like Australia Post.
Wish I still had it...

I still have a soft spot for a Mini:thumbup:
A '68 Morris Mini Deluxe 1100 with cone suspension, thats a rarity for sure.
My first car was a Mini as well a '63 850 with sliding windows. I think my dad always thought I couldnt get into toooo much trouble in a Mini but it wasnt that long until it sported a full house Cooper S engine which was good for 120 mph. :3gears: (sorry i couldnt find a four gear smile)
You raced a Mini :wtf::thumbup::3gears::bowdown:.

I lived and breathed Minis for many years ( pre Model A days ), last count I had owned 34 over many years but ended up parting ways with BMC products, basically to fund the Shed Downunder build and get along with the Model A restoration.

Hi mate

my first car was a mini too - Leyland though :shocking: It was an LS, but that did not mean it had any power - it just looked faster than a standard one.

I had a (BMW) supercharged Mini Cooper S for a while too - but then a second kid came along and ruined that!! That car was a bundle of fun too...

Great cars. Your Cooper S looks sweet - thanks for sharing.

The LS was packed full of emission controls, both the 998 and 1275 variants and even brand new would not pull the skin of a sausage. I recall a mate that brought one brand new and was so peed of with its performance and sick of retuning it to the dealer to rectify its poor performance, the car was still under warranty at the time, called me out of desperation and basically said do what you have to do to make this thing go fast. A Head, distributor, carby , camshaft later and it was different vehicle, one happy customer and the nice thing about the job was that if you lifted the bonnet you could not tell it had been modified.

P.S. how's your garage progressing?

Nice Cooper you had there 1/2 Cup, my 1st car was also an early '60s 850 - not a power house by any means, but still a lot of fun for a 15 year old.

My brother had a Mini van as a run around vehicle for a transport company that he owned - one day he carried a Mack truck engine 40 miles in it. :yikes:
(this of course was back in the '70s - safety hadn't been invented yet ).

Although my automotive interests have mainly been full-size American cars (and a few American V8-powered Aussie cars), I've always had a soft spot for Minis.

The table is looking good too.

With my Retro Industrial Table nearly finished and ready for sale and the Fabrication Bench with only the stainless steel draws being the only thing I have to complete. I want to turn my attention to the Bench seats (started last year with the other table frames, page 5 #85) these are to accompany the table I built some years back for our outdoor/indoor room "the Alfresco" dinning area.

The table.

During the week I cut the angle iron to size to fabricate the support brackets for the timber seats which will be made from Mountain ash, the same as the table top. Pics to follow later this weekend.

I am not sure about you guys other halves but when Mrs 1/2 Cup gets an idea in her head she is dangerous, then when she has a tape measure in her hand she becomes lethal.
The one thing in life I really detest is moving furniture, I don't know why but I just do. The one thing Mrs 1/2 Cup is really proficient at is exactly that " moving furniture and rearranging the house.
To paint the picture Mrs 1/2 Cup has quite a collection of antique dolls and is into jewellery making and with that she does not do things by halves so we have to accommodate almost commercial quantities of "stuff".
Short of building a dedicated craft room or "Lady Cave" getting things to work well in an older home can be quite a challenge at times.
For the most part our home office has been the third bedroom as well as accommodating her jewellery and sewing bits and pieces.
Last week she commented on the Shed Downunder in so far as just how envious she was of my little slice of garage heaven, now that's a fair call was my immediate thought.
Later that morning after mowing lawns, mandatory Saturday trips to the hardware and tool shops then checking out a few garage sales on the way I returned home to find Mrs 1/2 Cup with a tape measure in her hands.:scared:

So long story, short story our third bedroom has now become her craft room, our dinning room is now our home office, we now have a dinning room table in the family room, we have one half of an L shaped chaise lounge from the family room in the lounge room and the other half crammed into the dinning room and her dog show paraphernalia is now housed in the Alfresco outdoor room and garden shed.

The net result, believe it or not, actually works reasonably well. Most of our furnishings are in the Jacobean era, barley twist oak so they all mix and match well.

All this really had me thinking in terms of better utilising the space we have around here and in the shed and the stuff we have accrued over the years. Time to declutter all round, Shed Downunder included so I have listed a heap of stuff on Gumtree which is like Craigslist, this week with great results thus far.

. L shaped chaise lounge. Donated to charity
. set of turned veranda posts. SOLD
. Old Windsor Pot Belly Stove. SOLD
. Panel door lead light.
. New 2 1/2 hp 240v compressor motor.
. 50 s Cane dolls pram.
. Old brick mould.
. Horse drawn wagon. UNDER OFFER
. Retro Industrial Table.UNDER OFFER
. Brake Drum Pot Belly heater.SOLD
. 30s cast iron gas stove. SOLD
. Antique side table. (SOLD)
. Antique umbrella stand.
. Grundfos Domestic water pump.SOLD
. Tree Ferns .SOLD

And I intend that the list will be added to today.

Cheers, have a good week end.

I know just what you mean, my other half is just like that, the only difference is she doesn't use a tape measure. This makes it twice as troublesome as she will often want to move things to a spot where they just wont fit, I tell her that but she still has to try :willy_nil

We had a special visitor to the Shed Downunder yesterday. It was great to catch up with HOTFR8 who stopped by in his travels to check the Shed out, have a chat and drop some goodies off.

Delivering some Goodies soon so it will be interesting to see how 1/2 Cup puts them to use.

Two crates of high voltage (70 KV rated) glass insulators, they are huge, now the challenge for me will be to put them to good use in one of my many projects.

Suffering from a net failure that happened whilst I was away and only back online today I am now trying to catch up as well I am still suffering dejavu or something like that having been to the 'Shed Down Under' and seeing the place in person is much different to seeing it on the forum.

After 1/2 Cup made up the Xmas tree controller and I only had to replace parts I felt I needed to do something to pay him for his kindness and I knew he could make better use of these even down to the packing crates.

You should have seen his eyes pop out of his head when I opened the boot of the car and asked did he have a hand truck to carry them on. Glass versions of these I am told are rare these days.

I really am very curious what you're going to do with those :dunno:, because they ARE HUGE yes :)

Still pondering myself, the gears are turning so to speak. I have still got to finish a few other projects first but I have left them on the bench so they are front and centre.

Lee,
I have enough Red gum and RHS to make another 3 or 4 tables and they will improve with the lessons I learned building this one. My son now wants a red gum top for his dining table.
I simply don't have the room here to store stuff, that's why I am having a clear out.

And as Mrs 1/2 Cup doesn't know it yet, it will make room for a new lathe and TIG welder.

Cheers

I thought I would share some pictures of old tools I have accrued over the years.
I have for the most part left them as found and some will require the Herb Spencer treatment.

This Stanley 71 is one of a few tools that was part of an old Joinery that my wife's late step father used for storage for many years and when we cleared the contents they were gifted to me from the family.

You sly devil, you!

Shush......:scared: You say that you may get him in trouble.

I have sorta kinda have mentioned it in passing to Mrs 1/2 Cup, now wether she actually heard me is debatable. She is still getting over the package that turned up this week, my new 23 inch Dell LED monitor for the garage computor not to mention the retro industrial stool i brought on EBAY this week that she will have a 3 hour drive down to Frankston to pick up tomorrow.

I certainly have some points to make up over the next week or so.

Cheers
