Looks like you will go back to work for a break. It looks like you have been very busy.

I will try a pack as much Quality Shed Time in as possible over the next two weeks, I can assure you.

Brackets done and down to the galvanizers.
Cleaned and vacuumed the shed.
Tools cleaned and put away.
Now on to the footings.
A load of sand and gravel this morning.
Picked up 4 bags of cement.
Set out and string line the footing centres this afternoon.

Regards

Great progress 1/2 Cup! Love that fabrication bench. Jealous of your time off, I could use some of that!

I am pretty pleased with how things are going, I don't know wether I will want to go back to work, having too much fun..

Man, 2 weeks off is nice. Enjoy it. I just had 12 days off and got a jump on some projects but still didn't seem like enough time off to finish stuff but any day in the garage is better than work.

Its a great feeling walking out of work with the prospect of doing what you want and when you want for two weeks, no emails, phone, staff issues, project deadlines.;)

nice fabrication mate, can't wait to see this new area take shape

Thanks Anth, it will take a little while as apart from the concreting I am doing all of it my self, no real plan on paper as such only a few rough sketches.

Having been there I can tell you I am waiting to see the final results.

HOTFR8, we have been looking forward to update the carport for a while now and I am hoping it turns out ok.

Regards..

Wow, looks like you've been busy since the last time I dropped in. The fab table still makes me drool and those carport brackets look great. Is steel relatively inexpensive there, or do you have an outlet for cutoffs and such? That much metal would cost me an arm and leg here in Arizona.

Thanks very much for dropping by and your kind comments.

I am wrapped in the Fab table and will try and finish it of over the next week or so.

To give you an idea if you can remember the timber I brought for the bench seats, that little lot there cost ( roughly converted to USD ) around $220.00 that for dressed all round hard wood.
4x2 in pine would be around $4.00 for 3ft.

Steel on the other hand, compared to timber, seems relatively cheap.

There are heaps of places that sell steel offcuts from manufacturing, downgraded new steel and second hand places which are always a handy source for me.

Here is some current prices for new steel that I have paid recently.

6" galvanised C section purlin $5.50 per meter (3ft)
4" galvanised C section purlin $4.50 per meter (3ft)
2"x 1/4" mild steel flat $4.99 per meter (3ft.)
4"x 1/8" mild steel flat $4.99 per meter (3ft.)
3"x 1/4" mild steel flat $6.65 per meter (3ft.)
4"x 1/4" mild steel flat $9.00 per meter (3ft.)
1"x 1/4" mild steel flat $2.25 per meter (3ft.)
2 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 1/8" downgrade gal. angle iron $6.00 per meter.(3ft.)

The galvanizing works out at about $2.00 per kilogram, miles cheaper than powder coating. It will be finished Friday.

In future posts I will share the cost of my build as it will be interesting to compare notes.

Regards

If you need a good currency converter try this one >
http://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/ I use it all the time.

 I do recall you telling me that when I visited and left you the insulators.

Thanks for the converter link I think at the monument we are about 93.5 cents to the US$

I think tell every one that comes the carport is on the hit list, not that its too bad any way.

Nice welds Steve, they almost look like you used the tig, keep up the great work. Lee

Thanks Lee, I am actually having a little trouble with the MIG its an old JIC MIG/MAG 300. its not bad for tacking stuff up and heavier welds on plate but when it comes to the lighter stuff its not real consistent.

It was raining here yesterday and couldn't do much on the carport so I went tire kicking at BOC and checked out their range of MIG welders ( a guy I know fairly well works there ) Now to convince Mrs 1/2 Cup that I really need to trade the old banger in..

I wouldn't have any trouble filling my days in I can assure you. I am really looking forward to retirement Don, but have a few years to go yet. I do have 3 months long service leave up my sleeve and are seriously considering taking some of it in the near future:)

We have our fingers crossed hoping Mrs. Cup approves the new welding machine!!!

I have planted the seed but like the new TIG takes a little while to bear fruit so to speak.

Thanks for stopping by guys.

I fully understand 1/2 Cup, I would never be bored either - as well as the projects that I want to work on, there's always that infinite "to do" list. :willy_nil

I tend to put them all on the one list anyway, wether that be replacing a tap washer, cleaning the range hood, exhaust fans or working in the shed it really doesn't matter. Yesterday I was cleaning windows while Mrs 1/2 Cup was down in Geelong and still got that same sense of satisfaction when you finish a project.

Good statements. Where were you guys when I was cleaning and laying on fresh deck sealer Monday and Tuesday in the 92F weather? It barely dried before the monsoon set in!!
(Maybe I should have mentioned a case of Killian's Irish Red in the ice?)

Best Regards

I have to agree it is always great at the end of the day to know you have completed or accomplished something you have been wanting to do.

I guess this best sums it up, there is a rather iconic engineering business here in Shepparton that was established in 1864 and their company motto goes like this.

Good, better, best
Never let it rest.
Till your good is better and your better, best.

PS I will treat my self to a nice Red tonight as well..

Heading into week two of my leave now with last week I spent the first four enjoyable days at full steam then day five I crashed and I decided it was time to smell the roses so to speak feet up in the warm spring sun shine and caught up with a bit of reading, pottered around in the garden and doing some of the waking tracks around here with Shelby.

Yesterday was our local swap meet, I was fortunate to get in early with one of my brothers who have sites there annually. So many miles later these little legs were beat.
The swap was a great success from all accounts with over 600 sites and great weather.
Its more a social outing for me as you spend more time running into and chatting to people you know.
The was the usual mix of stuff on offer with plenty of nice enamel signs coming out of the woodwork along with their hefty price tags from what I could see.
A couple of items that were standouts was a nice old Southbend lathe at $500 and this Black and Decker Valve refacer and original cabinet stand at $300 which I thought was not to bad value. I looked at it twice and no I didn't buy it.

I should have my connector brackets for the carport back from the galvanisers this week so things should progress a little more on that front.

That valve refacer looks like it would of been a great score Steve, you usually don't see them with a cabinet. Did you end up purchasing anything interesting?

I thought about buying it, several times actually but passed it up and your right that's the first one I have ever seen with the original cabinet and the B&D brass plaque took my eye.

There was very little in the way of Model A stuff on offer but nothing that I really needed.
There was heaps of other bits and pieces that I could have brought but would only be buying for buying sake.
There is an auction I will be attending with some nice woodworking machinery on offer here in town on Friday. I am more than keen to throw in a bid on some of the equipment at that one.
Apart from the mandatory Egg and Bacon sanga, the must have hamburger and Coke I didn't spend a cent but had a great day.

Regards

WOW that Black and Decker valve machine and cabinet would have been snapped up here. $300 not bad for that if someone wanted to spend the restoration time on it. That somebody just could be me!! I have looked at twice now and I am in the market for something pretty special. Nice item, and I can see why you thought about it.

Best Regards

It is a nice piece for sure, one would nearly pay that for the cabinet alone as it was in not bad condition.

The base and castors are not original.

I just picked up all the brackets for the carport from the galvanizers, I am pretty pleased with how the hot dipped gal came out and will not have any corrosion issues for years to come that's for sure.

I had difficulty in buying suitable off the shelf small right angle brackets you see in the picture from the big box stores, locally or on line.
They we either made from too lighter gauge material and if there was a heavier one of the right size it invariably had too larger holes punched in it and they were around $9.00 each so the answer was to make 20 of my own with the angle iron and the hot dip gal it worked out about 1/2 price.

Have a great day..
