That's gonna look so good. What will the rest of the materials be? Batons, roofing, walls etc

Clean setup!!

Thanks, I am trying to achieve an industrial sort of look about the carport as it should fit in with the Storage Solution I have in mind, more on that later as I am not sure wether I can wrangle what I have in mind as yet.;)

That's gonna look so good. What will the rest of the materials be? Batons, roofing, walls etc

Thanks Anth,

Basically my idea is to replace the timber with steel as you see it in the picture below. What will be different is that the columns ( 4 x 4 x 1/8 Gal SHS ) will be moved to the fence line and the beams ( all of 2 x 6 x 1/8 Gal RHS ) extended out to suit.
The roof foot print will remain the same but I will be making it into a gable roof to match the existing pitches of the house, in place of the basically flat roof you see now.

I will be using 4 inch C section for the purlins and Heritage red corrugated iron for the roof and flashings.

The gable section will be in time have an insulated ceiling with some attic space included.

It is my intention to brick part of the front in at a later date as well and install a roller door for a little more security.

What was the fernery to the right will have a concrete slab laid which will become the floor for the proposed Storage Solution

I just did a mock up of the column to truss connector bracket for the Carport to give an idea as to how the finished product will finally look.

A 4 x 4 column with a 2 x 6 beam to put things in perspective.

Perhaps you already stated and I missed it.... but is the post & beam hot dipped galvanized also, or is it something else? Your work always gives me joy to see!

The posts and beams will all be hot dipped galvanized as well, what you see there is a couple of DuraGal off cuts I have which have weathered some.

Below is a link to their Web page.

Once again many thanks for your kind comments.

Thanks Martin.

The build will be a slow process as I am doing it myself with the exception of the concreting, I will just chip away at it.

I hope to order the steel today and have the footing rag bolts concreted in by the end of the week.

Once the steel is here we should start to see a little progress, getting all the brackets out of the way was a big milestone for me.

Regards.

Thanks HOTFR8, I am humbled. The only thing I can say to that is I have a go to the best of my ability, I don't always get right but it is not for the lack of trying.

Cheers

Keen to see how the attic space works. I am guessing storage.

That is brilliant using the steel posts on the building. We are beginning to see a lot of that done here as well. In fact, the people who were building selling stick buildings are now into metal framed ones. I think it is great, as it will keep those termites out of the works!! (Here in the Ozark Mountains they are terrible).
I think your doing great and I am positive your structure will be fantastic!!! Great Job!!

Best Regards

 The attic space will be for light stuff in plastic tubs and or used for timber storage, not sure yet.

Herb,

Steel is pretty much the norm out here and has been for many a year. You see some older residential garages ( up to say 1960s ) that are all timber. We have the same issues with termites as well.

I am a big fan of steel in terms of buildings but that said timber still has its place.

Thanks for your support, I am going a little out of the envelope with the build and my only hope is that it will blend with the house.

Can't wait to see that shiny stuff bolted together. Looks really good.

Thanks Ric,

It should come up how I visualized initially I am a bit partial to shiny steel. Most new carports out here now have all their steel work powder coated so this is a bit of a departure from the norm.
When its finished eventually the front column will be bricked up to the level of the fence and a brick wall extending to the driveway as you see it in the pic.

Eventually I intend to line the carport roof and it will be painted in a Classic Cream to match the existing paint finishes on the veranda and eaves .(soffits)

The mock up looks great. Cant wait to see it all in place.
That should be strong enough to hold any snow load if you had that chance. lol

Thanks akdiesel, snow, what is snow???

I guess if it ever did snow here, hypothetically of course, there should not be an issue. The structure will have around 1500 lbs of steel in it in total so I don't think the said snow load should be an issue, that said I did not factor it into my computations.

Its ironic that only a few posts ago we have been discussing a local company Furphy engineering ( one of Australia's oldest companies ) that is here in Shepparton. I was at an old farm yesterday and found this cast iron stock trough end ,which by the way are very collectable out here as are most of their cast wares of yester year.
I only found the one and will be searching for the other matching end in due course.

Thanks CoopVA, It is a sweet thing, I was walking through long grass and stubbed my shoe on it of all things. I am going back a do a thorough search for the other half.

I also picked up this leg vise today from my neighbour at $40
which it didn't think was to bad value.

Even if you dont find the other end,

.... what you have would look great, cleaned up and mounted on a wall or somewhere ..

Nice job on the gussets ..

I have already found just the spot it or both of them should I happen to find the other one. I am starting to get the proverbial cast iron gave yard, it makes for great garden art.

I am pleased at how the gussets have turned out and should look the part.

Thanks for dropping by Carves..

I have finally been able complete the set out and shot some levels for the Carport / Storage Solution this week. I borrowed a micrometer level which allowed me get some pretty accurate datum points to work to.

View media item 43432
This allowed me to pour the footings yesterday, 1/2 a metric cubic meter of concrete later they were done and dusted.

Other milestones for the project this week were:

. Structural steel material take completed and ordered for delivery on Friday due to some of the lengths I need are not stock and need to be ordered in.

. More brackets fabricated and nearly ready to drop of at the galvanisers.

. Finalised the exact measurements and angles for the roof gable.

. Completed a template for the rafter plumb and seat cuts.

Have a great weekend.

Another farm find, some of you guys may have seen my other thread in relation to this one but I thought I would post it here as well just for interest sake.

Mrs 1/2 Cups sisters' long time partner passed away a few weeks ago and I have been assisting in trying to help with the farm clean out. Amongst the life time collection of accumulated stuff is this gem.

Wow, that is cool! Nice work on the planning, prep, and materials for the carport project! I like the idea of having the brakets galvanized...

Many thanks Sean

It was either gal or powder coating, seeing the steel is already in gal I chose to go gal with the brackets, something different from what you would normally see I guess. It wont need painting, protects the metal and should see me out.

Thanks for dropping by..

Hey first post on GJ and wanted to say I enjoyed reading through this thread--among many other threads.

Very cool projects and craftsmanship displayed in here. I really like the solar panel project and it makes me want to take the plunge on it myself.

Thanks for posting!

I'm watching your progress on the carport with interest as I want to do something similar soon. Looking good!
You need one of these for your shed wall (no, it isn't mine)

Many thanks for dropping by hapi, we will be looking forward to checking out your build as well.

If I could ever find a Furphy cast iron water tank end at a half reasonable price I would have one in a flash. Have you seen what they have been selling for lately?? Most go for $1000 plus, depending on their age.:shocking:

That photo is actually of a fibreglass replica that some-one in Ballarat makes, I think he wants around $179 on evil bay. Might take a look next time I am over that way.
There used to be plenty at Ballarat swap in the early years for a couple of hundred dollars each, but my pockets were always too shallow

Incredible, a fibreglass replica.

I am hearing you, I should have gotten one years ago myself, they are out there but the prices are through the roof in the main.

All I seem to be doing lately is make brackets and more brackets, I certainly created a monster when I decided to add the "Industrial Look" to the Carport / Storage Solution build.
In my infinitely miss guided wisdom I chose to plate and screw over each welded joint on the structural members as per the connector brackets so I have another 60 odd brackets on the go at the moment which should be ready for the galvanizers next week.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and that applies to when you order your steel. My order for all the structural steel turned up at 7.30 yesterday morning having previously arranged with the supplier that the delivery be at 4.30 in the afternoon as I had organised some help for the later time due to the fact most of the order was in long lengths and would have to be unloaded by hand.
I was at work at that time and got a frantic call from Mrs 1/2 Cup that the truck was out the front and was waiting to be unloaded and the driver was not allowed to unload it him self, a couple of phone calls later to dig up some assistance and a 20 minute drive back home from work the steel was off loaded.
When you have limited space 12mt. or 36 ft lengths of RHS and purlins are not easy to handle and the place looks like a steel merchants yard at the moment. It was the most effective way to minimalize the amounts of offcuts I would have ended up with and have to store.

Regards

If you had arranged a particular time for delivery with the supplier, then the onus is with them to ensure that the delivery is within the time frame specified.
A late delivery (stuff happens - breakdowns, traffic, etc.) is excusable but 9 hours ahead of the specified time!!! I would have been straight on to the supplier to fix it.
