So we should see a few more updates and progress photos over the next couple of days.

Not a big horse race fan I must say we have a sweep at work but that is it for me.:beer.

Same here, not a big fan of Horse Racing, but will gladly take the day off so everyone else can enjoy them...

So you guys are like me and can pick the winner now. A Horse. :lol_hitti

On the TV this morning they told the ladies what ever you do do not take of your shoes. Interesting when they said why.
1, Shows you can not wear heals and 2 who knows what you may walk on. :wtf:

So what plans for the works today 1/2 ?

I have dismantled 2/3 s of the old carport so far and put up the first of the four beams just to see how things would fit up, so far so good. The columns and beam have squared up nicely, I should get another main beam up today.

Mrs 1/2 Cup wasn't real impressed with me lifting the beam into position by my self but having had a long hard think about it and using some props it went up safely.

I will post some pics later.

I will spend some time with my eldest son at my sister in laws tomorrow to continue our clean up and grab some pics to sell some of her stuff on Gumtree ( much like Craigslist )

Regards

This is where I am at today, the place looks like a bomb has hit it. One bay left standing to cover Mrs 1/2 Cups car as I move from the rear to the front with the build, electrics all disconnected and a pile of 10 x 1 3/4 Oregon that is screaming out to make bench tops from, I will keep that project for another day.

Its handy having the extra 2 days off, you get heaps done but for the moment I will tidy up the site then hook into the lawns and watering the garden.

Good start. The new posts look great waiting for their new load.

Thanks akdiesel, I am hoping it will look the part when it all comes together.

The next challenge will be trying to hold up the climbing rose temporarily as I finish the demolition and install the new beam.

Some time back I had some antique railway luggage carrier brackets reproduced and cast in aluminium specifically to support the climbing rose on and have never installed them on the carport side knowing that it would be replaced down the track.

I have used some of them on the veranda that a joins the carport, to the left hand side.
These pictures will give you an idea of what I a dealing with.

That Rose will not like being moved at this time, specially being in flower. Will be interesting to see how you manage that. I suppose your Rose would be out in flower well before Cup Day considering you are further north. They usually say they come out in flower for the Melbourne Cup.

Our first flush of blooms were out about three weeks ago and they are looking great.
I plan to support it to one side possibly letting it rest on a couple of 8ft step ladders whilst I remove the old beam, install the new one and position the brackets.
When I rebuilt the veranda I was able to do similar but the plant was dormant at that time.
Its too windy here today to be even contemplating more dismantling of the old carport so I will concentrate getting the second beam installed instead.

I still have to spend some time on the clean up at my sister in laws today as well.

Regards

Great progress 1/2 cup, thanks for the pictures too, I did see your post yesterday but didn't get the chance to respond.

Thanks for dropping by Andrew, I put another beam up this afternoon, it is still to windy to do any more demolition on the last 1/3. I am just having a bit of a clean up now as I hate tripping over and working around stuff at the best of times.

1/2 Did you back a winner today ? If so sit back and pay some one to do all that work or like me you never gamble so back to work on it.

To be honest HOTFR8 I don't even know what horse I scored in the sweep at work, I will let you know that one tomorrow.

We need pics!!! keep up the good work Mr. Full Cup!!

I should have some more pics of my progress on the Carport / Storage Solution build this weekend. The plan is to demolish the last 1/3 of the old carport and install the last two main beams in place then I can start on the intermediate beams.
Its been slow progress but I am getting there.

Full Cup is right:lol: My Cup overfloweth at the moment with all that is going on around here.

So did you have a winner ?

1/2Cup is pretty Full On.

No winner in the Cup Sweep at work so it looks like I will have to put of my plans for early retirement.

Thanks guys

A little more progress on the Carport / Storage Solution build yesterday with the bulk of the demolition of the old carport completed and the 3 rd main beam installed.

Each of the 6 x 2 Square Hollow section main beams weighs in the order of 80 LBS.

We had our first taste of summer, 98 F and windy as well, the weather conditions proved fairly challenging to say the least.

Looking great!!! We have lots of snow and it is not going to stop coming for about 6 months LOL!

Thanks Sean, I really don't know how you guys put up with the cold like you do.

Interesting to see how you have kept that Climbing Rose in place.

I wont be tackling the rose till next week end HOTFR8, I have a plan ......take
One heavy truck brake drum.
One old carport column
Two 3/4 bolts, bolt together
Two g clamps to rest the truck on.
The rose is not held up by much and I only need to move the main branch a couple of inches whilst I fit the new beam. That's the plan anyway.

Thanks Coop, I get the shivers at just the thought of temperatures that cold.

Thanks for dropping by Herb, it gets a little too hot here at times though, no snow but down to freezing in the winter.

I am really enjoying the project, it has been fairly physically demanding but its great to see it finally start to come together. Now that demolition and construction has started it will be my primary focus till I get the roof on then maybe I will have a break from it and get into some restoration or bench build therapy.

Regards..

Solid progress mate, columns and beams look great in-place, gives you an idea of the extra space you're going to gain.

The carport/storage build is progressing nicely 1/2 cup.

Thanks Mark, I have been chipping away at it when I can. I really only get the weekends to have a good crack at things as I have had a fair bit on my plate lately.

OK, keen to see how you keep that Rose in place.

Apologies HOTFR8 I miss read your last question. The climbing rose on the carport side is currently held up by 2 - 2 inch gal conduit saddles nailed to the timber.
The brackets below are the ones I had cast some time back and never got around to fitting on the carport side as I had always intended to replace the carport at some time.

Thanks Anth, you are right I am, for the first time, starting to see how it will finally look, you can do as many drawings and sketch ups as you like but there is nothing like seeing real time so to speak.

I have been copping a fair ribbing lately, firstly from some of our members in Australia, that I have not started a thread or posted much about my shed, so today is it and secondly from some members (who shall remain nameless) who cannot understand just what it is like to live at the bottom of the world.
So this will be a taste of things to come as this is the way some perceive we do things down here.

Looking forward to sharing Mr. and Mrs. 1/2 Cups world with you all.

Looks more like the long drops in South Africa. The only wish you need is that there is toilet paper and no snakes in there.

Tell you what 1/2 Cup, your whole place is so neat, I really need to pull finger and tidy up my garage again.

I also have a serious dose of carport envy. Nicola will not let me put one up in front of the garage.

But I will keep at her. :D

Many thanks for dropping by and your kind comments Rian.
Being a relatively small shed I find if I don't keep the place in order it almost becomes unworkable, I pretty much clean up and put every I have used thing back in its place on a daily basis.

Keep the pressure on Nicola for that carport, let her know that it value adds to your property and really enhances your working environment for sure.

I know you spoke of it, but have you worked out a seperate woodshop yet? I know you would like to keep it out of your shop area as I do. I can say it's the best thing I have done. Everything is looking great with your latest photos. Great Job and I am standing by to cheer you on!!

Herb,
We have made the decision to utilise the garden shed for all my wood working gear, pretty much as yourself and sean buick have both done.
The garden shed is adjacent to the carport and should work well.
The key to this will be mobility and easy access to everything. This will free up the workshop no end.

This is the garden shed as it stands.

I have been away with work for a part of this week so progress has slowed some what. However I am pleased to see the project slowly getting there.

Thanks for dropping by.

More progress on the Carport Saturday.

The last of the main support beams in and the climbing rose was successfully transitioned to its new home.
I spent quite a bit of time checking levels and adjusting the posts to get things spot on. The house connector brackets proved challenging to say the least as a 70 year old house doesn't lend it self to change easily.

Have a great weekend..

Yes, but your place has great charecter.
I don't know if you mentioned it but are you going for a complete sealed roof or more of a pergola design?

akdiesel,

The house was built post WW2 when building materials were hard to come by, so it has some rather unique features that you only find in homes of that era and have tried to maintain the essence of that time.

The roof will be a blend of both a sealed roof and open pergola concept. I will be maintaining the original covered area foot print.

Over the next few weeks I will be installing the trusses so that should paint the picture a little clearer.

Thanks for dropping by..

Managed to get the first of the trusses and an intermediate beam in position Sunday.

Establishing exactly where they would ultimately sit and look most aesthetically right proved to be an issue as the house is not square to the boundary line and the drive way runs off on an angle to the house by 4 inches in 30 feet. So it took a bit of "humouring" the situation to get it looking as it should.
