Thanks drives I can just imagine an excavator in HOTFR8s front yard.:lol_hitti
Ideas for a drive in pool  I doubt council here would 'permit' it. Permit being the operative word.

I am off to get that hair cut I sorely need.
I suppose you need to look respectable when you go back to work ;)
That holiday must be getting close to finishing and you have done so much in that time.

1/2: i'm excited to see what design you come up with for your semi permanent E tank. also just an FYI a member tested the fumes coming off his E tank by lighting a match (not sure the smartest way to test) and anyway it didn't have any issues. not saying there isn't any fumes, but probably not a lot as long as you are only using steel and cast iron in the tank's water.

good luck and don't forget to take lots of pictures.

sorry to hear your week off is coming to an end, but happy to hear you had a little fun.

HOT: don't you own a huge piece of property? can't you keep the council off your land with a few dingos and some electric fence? that way you could have the E tank for the ages to de rust those old rusty gems with 2, 4 or 18 wheels.

Easy answer - I wish.

Complicated answer - You need permits to keep Dingoes and electric fences are only allowed in rural areas. Any new work is soon picked up by councils these days as they watch everything going on.

drives, there is very little fumes coming from the E tank amazingly, I have seen more bubbles come out of a battery on charge, that said I didn't take any chances with it just in case.

Like all good things my leave is coming to an end and back to work Monday. Such is life..

Regards.

Our council is permit central, as are most out here. Next thing we will need is a permit to mow our nature strips and have to put up signage and witches hats because we are on a pubic thorough fare.

Have a great day guys.

Look what turned up today after a long wait, the stainless steel drawer fronts for the under bench drawers. I won't be taking the protective cover off them until the final fit up. I don't do finger marks on brushed stainless.

And the drawer slides I prepared earlier.

View media item 50750

Now all I need is my drawer cases from my nephew.

Progress at last.

Some pretty famous words right there. Crack the whip and back to work Monday. Looking forward to annual leave now I guess.

Some of that is already getting beyond the joke. Most councils expect you to mow the nature strip. Heard of one (back when I was a Firey) on a ride on booked for mowing his (Police intercepted it as an unregistered vehicle) so he told the council they could do it and the end result was pretty stupid with a fire risk to deal with. Never heard how it ended and I do not recall the location. Most Councils have a by law allowing you to mow nature strips.

On another note Council here when I was building kept a close on on my works as the neighbors created a fuss trying to stop me building. Karma got them as they put on an illegal extension with second hand timber being built at the same time as my place and the extension had to be removed. They had to start over when they got permits and then new timber. The builder here was on the ball and so fed up with the inspector he told him to look aver the fence. So what goes round comes round.

I also had an issue with road works and council specifying the location of my main front gate but I will not go into that except to say it must have cost council a fortune to abide by what they told me to do and the works they did and then set it the road back so I had the access the council told me I had to have. One section of the council simply did not speak to the other and my building permit specified my entrance and the road works would have left me a 6 foot drop at the front gate.

Sorry 1/2 but that covers permits and what I think of them. Looking back I sure as hell got a laugh but it was all red tape stupidity at the time.
Council Permits :eyecrazy:

When will we see the finished drawers ?

Good progress 1/2 cup. Always good ticking a few things off the list and getting some fiddle around time too. Now I need to find myself an old vise(ce) to restore so I can play with an E tank :)

Do you guys down south miss out on the public holiday on Monday ?

Cheers Grumblebum.

Don't get me started on council permits:mad: On Monday my first task is to do battle with a local council over tree (saplings really ) removal on a vested crown land easement (ours) adjacent to a road reserve, you don't think that been fun just to allow Powercor to erect a power line to a new site of ours.

Not to mention retrospective planning approval.

Not to mention planning permits.

Not to mention works permits for working in a road reserve.

Not to mention a traffic management plan. (for a dirt road that would see one car per day)

Not to mention the environmental offsets.

Enough rant, I feel better now.;)

The drawers will be my focus item today getting ready for when the cases turn up.

Grumblebum The E - tank is the way to go, I can highly recommend it if you are thinking of getting an old vise to restore.

We get a public holiday today for the AFL Grand Final today.

Regards

Drawer slide set-up is looking really good!

Thanks Hef, I will keep you posted.

Have a great day everyone.

We get a public holiday today for the AFL Grand Final today.

Try working when you do not know about holidays This one is Victoria only today. No one will be at the AFL grand final (well except those from West Aust) as most have left town for the long weekend that we never had here before.

Many have taken advantage to get out of the city for events like the Ute Muster and Chopped.

The AFL holiday is one many did not want and many say we do not need.
Oh I am at work as I have interstate customers.

1/2 please post some updates on those drawers or your topic will become a  about councils and long weekends.

Yep your right HOTFR8:thumbup:

The under bench draws should compliment the storage containers I did earlier this year.

Whilst contemplating life in the Shed Downunder last night, I was looking at my peg board above the benches.

Another area of interest for my Continuous Improvement Program Looking fairly drab, It needs an up lift and has been used to hang some of my everyday tools there.

Any suggestions welcome.

Can't wait to see the drawers in action. Should be great.
As for the peg board, I used to be for them and then against but now I have the WallControl brand and I am very happy with them and there versatility. I only wanted items that were either odd shapes or ones I used a lot.
I am a big fan of stainless as you are too and they look great as a peg board but the steel ones give the magnetic ability. Which can be useful.

Thank you akdiesel I have been looking at your set up and that has been the inspiration to do something with mine.

The new drawer faces will match the fabrication bench, handles and all. I am trying to achieve some semblance of continuity in doing so.

A work of art that has inspired many work benches, I'm sure.

I know I studied it when I was building mine.

1/2 Cut how about taking a page from the Jack Olsen book and doing something similar to his cabinets with integrated peg board. I know of at least one of his that doesn't even open/close. It might be an idea to at least clean it up some.

1/2: that table just keeps looking better every time i look at it. just a quick question. did you weld on the end panels to hide the draw(er) ends and then put bolts in it and in the supports under the plate for decoration?

very cool

1/2 and Hot: i sold Real Estate for 30 years in another life and i totally understand the rules the council (building departments here) think they have the right to tell us. a guy can pile up **** on his property for 50 years and not have any issues (sometimes), and if he or somebody wants to spend time and money improving the property the rules book comes out. that's what happens when you vote in politicians that are attorneys. End of my rant, but would like a change to the happy medium where common sense intervenes.

sorry your vacation (holiday) is almost over, but hopefully work will keep taking you to those awesome places you've showed us.

Awe, yes it is. One of if not the best one around.

Well, you certainly got that one right.

Bench looks absolutely lovely.

Well done !

It looks great

The bench looks great, you can call those draws or drawers, either way they are awesome!

Thank you, each and every one of you for your kind feed back, truly appreciated I can assure you.

To answer some of the questions:

jbmatth I have revisited Jacks 12 Gauge Garage this morning and you are right I will certainly take a page out of his book for mine. Mrs 1/2 Cup keeps reminding me if it ain't broke don't fix it and she is right my tools on the peg board has served me well for a long time and it will not take a whole heap of effort with some small improvements to take things up a notch so to speak.

drives the end panels are held on with stainless dome nuts and are removable and they are basically just for aesthetics really. I do have plans to mount some industrial power outlets on one of them at some point when I have nothing better to do.

Back to work Monday, looking at my calendar I will be doing a fair bit of travel to a few of those awesome work places we have over the next little while.

I have not dared even look at my work emails at this point they will take at leas the best part of a day to get through. The other bonus going back to work is that I will take the MG F engine to work early and put it through the hot tank for the day.;)

Have a great weekend guys and thanks again.

Honestly, this is approaching "art" in my opinion. Oozes testosterone and coolness. I am a big fan of the book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", for one reason really. The book got me thinking that I actually felt guilty at times taking time, care and devotion in doing one thing (or project) really well. When I see a project like this, it really reminds me of the satisfaction in craftsmanship.

Thanks for the daily inspiration :)

What is left on the docket before going back to work? I have been busy with my many projects as well, sometimes I miss working for a company rather than for myself.

Too nice to weld on, should have put stainless on top and used it as a dining table! ;)
Octane_matty: I would be very careful mentioning tables around 1/2 Cup. When added to the Fabrication Table, his unique and beautiful tables would fill a thread...

...and that's not all of them:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:.

Dennis That is the one aspect of the Garage Journal that tops the list for me, is the inspiration that I personally take away from here every day, it is just awesome. I feel very privileged to be able to share what I do and that others can take a little piece of that away with them.

As always great to see your updates!

Thank you Sean, I can't get over the fact that young Shane has turn one now. It looks like you guys celebrated in style.

Gorgeous bench! And practical too. Digging it.

Thank you Hewey the bench really suits what I do here. There would be a few minor mods that I would do if I were to build another such as integrating some power points rather than run leads.
I am starting to kit out the drawers now with tools and stuff so that it is more or less self contained.

What is left on the docket before going back to work? I have been busy with my many projects as well, sometimes I miss working for a company rather than for myself.

Strouty I have worked for myself a number of years ago and really enjoyed sub contracting, I guess they both have there good and bad points either way. I have been following your progress as well and you certainly have a lot on your plate.

Today its:

. Lawns.
. Under bench drawers, a few mods to the bench frame to be completed.
. Load the MG F engine to take to work and hot tank tomorrow.
. The weekly clean and vacuum in the shed.
. Pack up the E- tank until next week as Shelby has decided its a great thing to dunk her ball in.
. My eldest has his second last run for the year in the MG at Sandown raceway today so I will be eager to hear how he goes as he fitted a loaner Close Ratio Gearbox last week.

http://www.sandown.net.au/motoring.html

That's about it really and thanks for dropping by.

Absolutely amazing !!
really a great job, congrats ;)

Many thanks Thierry I am very proud of the table.

Too nice to weld on, should have put stainless on top and used it as a dining table! ;)

I am with you on that score matty all though I do use the TIG on it at times. Currently its covered with an MG F K Series engine.

Another project I have already stated is exactly that an Industrial Style Dinning Table. It will not have a stainless top but I scored some nice Jarrah timber some years back.

Since I built that table and recognised the need for a specific welding table I built this.

View media item 48845
I have done a few mods to this since the pic was taken and intend to fit a vise as well.
